OCTOBER 2022

SENTINEL
PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY October 22nd Star Gazing Party!

Lifestyle Update

Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature has been saving up all year for the grand finale! - Lauren DeStefano

October is here!

I am sure many of you will agree, this is one of the best months of the year. The weather is so lovely. It is definitely the time of year to spend more time outdoors; no more triple-digit temperatures! For all those who love pumpkin spice – well, it’s pumpkin spice, and everything nice season again. I think they add more items with pumpkin spice every year!

Along with those delicious flavors come many warm fall dishes filled with squash, apples, and cinnamon with those beautiful colors of red, orange, and yellow. Watch the Poolside Café and our event dinner menus for these fall treats. Here in southern Utah, we are just starting to put on our light jackets as we head out to play Pickleball, Lawn Bowl, hike, or participate in other outdoor activities. One of these outdoor activities we are all very familiar with is the Annual Huntsman World Senior Games. Many Residents either participate or volunteer for this event. We can’t wait to cheer on our friends and neighbors at this year’s Games. Don’t forget to send your Huntsman Games photos to SR-Events@PMPmanage.com. We don’t just want photos of medal winners; we want a variety of photos of everyone involved having a great time and being involved. To all the athletes participating, “Good Luck!!” I will be cheering on everyone playing here at our facilities.

Neighborhood Meetings

It’s that time of year again! Time to gather as neighbors and enjoy lunch and an informational meeting. Each meeting will begin at 11:30am and end by 1pm. Neighborhood Representatives for each neighborhood will have a presentation, many have invited a special speaker, and Management will give a report. After the presentations will be a question-and-answer period with each of the candidates running for the open Board of Trustees positions. Ryan will be preparing a delicious meal for all to enjoy. Please sign up for your free ticket on the website. That way, the kitchen and events staff can plan the appropriate number of chairs and meals. This is an informative meeting, and we encourage everyone to attend. If you have any further questions about these meetings, please contact your Neighborhood Representatives.

Las Vegas Shopping Trip

We are heading to Las Vegas again to enjoy another day of shopping at one of our Resident favorites, the Downtown Summerlin Mall. We have planned this fall shopping trip around another fun activity that happens each year at the Summerlin Mall, the Vintage Market. This occurs in the center area of the mall, at the Festival Square, and holds many antique treasures from home goods to original art, indoor and outdoor décor, seasonal plantings, consumable yummies, and so much more. You have your choice of paying the entrance fee to walk through this fun Vintage Market or head on into the Summerlin Mall stores, or perhaps, shop at both. Summerlin Mall also has another Resident favorite shopping location, Trader Joe’s, and many other exciting places, as well as many delicious places to have lunch. It is time to get in some shopping before the malls become overly crowded for the holidays.

Stuff Sale

Garage sales started as branching out of ‘rummage’, which was a discount sale of unclaimed cargo at the shipyards in the early 1800s. As time went on, comparable sales became popular in social hubs such as churches. Finally, in the 50s and 60s, yard sales grew to be family and neighborhood events. Here in SunRiver St George, it has become a traditional event that happens twice a year. It is a very well-attended event, as the greater St. George Community looks forward to shopping at our Stuff Sale each year. In the past, we have had many Residents tell us that the Stuff Sale has been very helpful for them to get rid of unused items while making some extra cash doing it.

Due to the popularity of this event, we expect it to sell out. Getting your spot reserved as quickly as possible will be very important. The fee for the booth space helps cover advertising around Washington County. Also, American Legion Post 142 will be onsite selling coffee to help get you going in the morning. Please remember not to arrive any earlier than 7am to set up. Take down is at Noon. We do not want anyone to tear down early for safety reasons; we cannot have cars driving into the shopping areas. There will be a charity truck here to take unwanted items, and we are contacting a food truck so you can fuel up on some delicious food while you are shopping! Tickets are available on the website for Saturday, October 29th, from 9am-Noon. See you there for this fun event. I always say, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!”

Halloween Monster Mash

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31st. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. The 18th century pope, Gregory III, destinated November 1st as a time to honor all saints. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest, and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night before, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve and Halloween. Over time Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-olanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes, and eating treats.

Star Gazing Party

We are very excited to introduce a new event to SunRiver St George! Please help us welcome the St. George Astronomy Club to SunRiver to help us run our first Star Gazing Party on Saturday, October 22nd, at 7:30pm! Did you know that Utah has the highest concentration of International Dark-Sky Association-certified locations, including communities, parks, and protected areas? Did you know that astronomy is the oldest of the natural sciences? Want to learn more about the beautiful night sky? Do you enjoy star gazing, own your own telescope, or are you just wanting to learn and try out a telescope for the first time? Then you are invited to attend our Star Party this month. We will meet by the Dog Park so we can find a nice, dark spot to view the night sky. The St. George Astronomy Club will be on hand with telescopes for you to use. If you have any telescopes, please feel free to bring them to either use yourself or share with others. The events team will provide cookies and cocoa. Please bring your own lawn chairs to use during the event.

Today Halloween has grown into a big celebration, with carnivals, school parties, trick-or-treating at malls, business parties, farm events, pumpkin carving, and lots of decorations. Utah leads the nation with the most Halloween decorations purchased each year; some homes are really decked out! It’s fun to decorate homes and see the excited faces of the kids when they are out trick-or-treating. Here at SunRiver, we do not receive many kids in the neighborhoods. Instead, we hold a Community Monster Mash Halloween Party. This year’s event will be on Monday, October 31st, at 5:30pm! There are two different tickets available: one for dancing only and one for dancing and appetizers. This is one of our largest parties of the year and one of the most fun! The costumes are amazing and would win any contest held in the county. Login to the website to get your tickets today! You do not want this event to sell out before you get your ticket! There will be light appetizers, a costume parade, great music by DJ Adam (don’t forget to make your song request on the website), and prizes for those in costume for the following categories: Scariest, Funniest/Most Creative, Most Original, and Best Couple/ Group. We cannot wait to see what everyone is wearing! Also, be ready to pose for some photos; we have saved room in the Weekly Email to show off the costumes!

CHLORINE - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The smell that hits you when you walk into an indoor pool venue is overwhelming. Chlorine, in gas form, was used in WWI and is capable of killing a human. So why do we have to use it in our pools? The fact is that we need it in our pools. Heavy use of chlorine destroys bacteria in warm water, so its use is necessary. It is a disinfectant and can kill diseases like E. coli and other bacteria and viruses. It is little wonder that it wreaks havoc on our swimwear, hair, and skin.

We often worry about what chlorine is doing to our skin and hair as well as destroying our swimwear. All year round, swimming in heated pools is delightful and great for exercise, so we don’t want to deny ourselves the pleasure. Chlorine can irritate your eyes, dry out your skin, and damage your hair, so how can we protect ourselves and our swimwear from the harsh effects?

Although chlorine protects you from harmful bacteria that can grow in swimming pools, soaking in the stuff for too long takes its toll. The chemical strips your hair and skin of the natural oils in charge of keeping damage out and moisture in, leaving your skin dry, itchy, flaky, and sensitive. You can protect your hair from chlorine damage by rinsing and wetting your hair before and after swimming, applying coconut oil, olive oil, and other natural oils to your hair, using a swim spray, using gentle shampoos, wearing a swim cap, putting long hair in a ponytail, and swimming in outdoor pools.

Rates are climbing

They do make swimwear that is supposedly chlorine resistant (Lycra), but chlorine destroys the elasticity of this polyurethane-based material. To protect your swimwear, you should pretreat it by soaking it in white vinegar. Thereafter, shower before and after swimming, rinse your swimsuit in cold water and gently wash it by hand, and then thoroughly rinse your swimsuit and let it drip-dry.

So, in conclusion, we may find chlorine ‘offensive’ at times, but it is a necessary evil. Our Indoor Pool should re-open around Tuesday, November 1st.

SAVE THE DATE: Our next Swim Club event will be our Annual Meeting/Potluck/Elections on Monday, November 28th, from 5-6:30pm.

Tennis & Pickleball

How One Helps the Other

Like a good marriage, where each shares the same important basics and yet can benefit from the admirable qualities of the other, tennis and pickleball players can use the unique assets of the other sport to complement and improve themselves.

How tennis helps pickleball:

1. Because a tennis racquet is longer and heavier than a pickleball paddle, tennis groundstrokes (forehand and backhand) require a straight arm and a firm wrist. This influence on the pickleball swing not only reduces stress on the elbow and wrist but also stabilizes the paddle face for consistent shots.

2. Tennis groundstrokes also require turning sideways and a longer backswing and follow-through than pickleball groundstrokes. Starting the pickleball swing earlier allows it to be slower and longer. Coupled with being sideways, both promote directional control and faster shots.

3. Tennis uses three different “grips” (hand positions on the handle) to control the speed, height, and depth of shots or to create three different spins: overspin (called topspin), underspin, and sidespin. The use of different grips in pickleball also controls the speed, height, and depth of shots or creates different spins, which affect the ball’s travel before and after the bounce.

How pickleball helps tennis:

Pickleball requires a quick assessment of the speed, spin, and direction of the ball hit by the opponent. The receiver must take quick, big, or small steps to be in the proper position to hit the incoming ball.

Because a pickleball court is smaller than a tennis court, the time to react to incoming pickleball shots is shorter than for incoming tennis shots, especially when all players are at the Kitchen Line. Thanks to pickleball, tennis players will likely improve their net game because of their quick reflex responses.

As you can see, playing both tennis and pickleball can add greatly to each sport. If you want to improve your pickleball game, for instance, consider learning tennis or dusting off your old racquet. Please call (858) 7227258 to reach Taffy Lewis, a former teaching pro who enjoys volunteering to help. The Tennis Club has ‘Drop-In Tennis’ every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and if you are an intermediate player, please call Pat Ault at (435) 817- 0644 for ‘League’ play on Fridays. The Tennis Club’s next ‘Social’ is Saturday, October 29th, so please check the whiteboard at the Sports Pavilion near the tennis courts for the correct times.

Meditation

HUMOR IN MEDITATION -

OR WHY IS THE BUDDHA LAUGHING

The Laughing Buddha is the ultimate symbol of happiness - taking away problems, having good fortune, and a fulfilling life. If you have seen a statue of the Laughing Buddha, you will recognize his round tummy and big smile. If you have one, you know to rub his tummy for luck and to remember to laugh.

It is common to think that meditation is serious business. Oscar Wilde said, “Life is way too important to be taken seriously.” Humor helps us to relax. Laughter releases dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter. When you are laughing, you are in the now, not stuck in the past or worrying about the future.

According to the Mayo Clinic, laughter has many benefits, both short-term and long-term. When you laugh, you stimulate your heart, lungs, and muscles with an intake of the oxygen-rich air. Laughing activates and relieves the stress response increasing the endorphins released by your brain. It can help improve your immune system, relieve pain, improve your mood, and improve self-esteem.

Laughter helps us connect with other people. Victor Borge said, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”

When our group meets together for Meditation, we often find time to share humor and to connect with laughter. Come laugh with us on Wednesdays at 10am in the Multi-Purpose Room.

Institute for Continued Learning:

2022-2023 Classes Have Started!

As we age, ‘use it or lose it’, the universal law of body, mind, and soul, is even more important than in our earlier years. If you have not already discovered this secret jewel of St. George, the Institute for Continued Learning at Utah Tech is the place in southern Utah for finding tremendous, inexpensive, educational programs that help keep us healthy in all three domains.

Classes are led by experienced seniors and are generally for seniors, although anyone can participate. Many classes can be attended either in person (on campus) or by Zoom. Every year, topics cover all areas in the fields of exercise, science and technology, and the humanities. This fall semester includes old favorites like Socrates Café, The Love Class, History of Washington County, Evolutionary Psychology, Creative Writing, Folklore and Mythology, and the Geology of St. George. Additionally, they have added stimulating, completely new subjects such as Aging Proactively, the Healing Power of Plant Foods, Let’s Do Melodrama, and Barre Fitness. Many of these classes in the fields of exercise, music, gardening, hiking, and computers, for example, complement or augment SunRiver’s Club activities. All the classes are available to us for just one modest, flat registration fee!

Classes started in late September, but it is not too late to join. Take a look at the 2022-2023 course catalog, which you can pick up from the Resident Services Committee credenza (in the corridor leading to the Ballroom) next time you pass by, or log on to icl.utahtech.edu/ to download it. You can register online or visit the ICL office. If you would like more information, call either the ICL offices at (435) 652-7670 or contact Hans de Haan of the Resident Services Committee at (858) 449-1218 or hdeh@sunrivertoday.com.

Walk With a Doc is Back!

After a hiatus from the summer heat, Walk With A Doc (WWAD) is again coming to a location near you - in this case, Atkinville Wash Park, near the SunRiver Villas, to be exact.

You are familiar with the term Octoberfest; well, this is what we call Octoberwalk. It will begin with sign-up at 8:30am, and the walk will begin at 9am on Tuesday, October 18th, in the Atkinville Wash Park parking lot, where walkers can go half a mile, a full mile, or up to two miles. All walkers are welcome, from those with walk-assist equipment to the faster-moving walkers.

The Octoberwalk will feature Dr. Andrew Patchett, D.O., osteopathic medicine specialist at the Southern Utah Kidney and Hypertension Center, and he will entertain questions along the way. His beginning remarks will be centered on “Identifying and treating kidney and hypertension in our senior population.”

Dr. Patchett began his academic career with an undergraduate degree in Zoology at Idaho State University. He received his graduate degree at Midwestern University in Arizona. He completed his internal medicine residency and his latter Nephrology Fellowship at Oklahoma State University Medical Center, where he was voted Fellow of the Year in 2016.

Raised in Henderson, Nevada, Dr. Patchett now resides with his family in St. George, Utah.

The next WWAD, or Novemberwalk, will be on Tuesday, November 15th, at 9am.

Hiking Club

With milder temperatures, fewer visitors, and endless adventure possibilities, southwestern Utah is pretty good in the fall. Fall comes to greater Zion a little later than it does in many areas of the country. From late October to early November, you will find leaves changing color, and cooler and crisper air for outdoor adventures.

Some areas for spotting fall colors are Zion National Park, the scenic drive along Kolob Terrace Road, and the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. There isn’t much for color in Snow Canyon/Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, but the milder temperatures make fall a perfect time to visit with scattered volcanic cones, sand dunes, lava flows, and red sandstone cliffs.

Please join the SunRiver Hiking Club on our adventures.

War of the Worlds

On October 30th, 1938, Orson Wells chose to produce a Halloween Eve special. He adapted the H. G. Wells novel about a Martian invasion into a radio drama. That evening Orson Wells’ Mercury Theater aired the famous H. G. Wells story. Critics have long acclaimed this to be one of the best radio dramas of all time. In certain respects, it was too successful. It produced a panic in New York City. Many listeners of the radio broadcast felt the drama was real news. The Earth was being invaded by machines from Mars.

The idea of a Martian invasion seems ridiculous today. Instead of Mars invading Earth, Earth landers have invaded Mars. We know that Mars is a vast, cold desert that cannot support complex lifeforms. Public perceptions of Mars were very different in 1938. Ron Smith will explain why many people were convinced that intelligent life existed on Mars. Then we will see American Experience: War of the Worlds. This public television documentary reveals the creative genius of Orson Wells and why so many people were convinced that our planet faced an invasion from Mars.

The Ballroom presentation takes place on Tuesday, October 11th. Doors open at 5pm. The program begins at 5:30pm. You must purchase tickets in advance. Popcorn tickets cost just $1.50. Sandwich tickets cost $5.50. We also have a free Zoom program on Thursday, October 13th. Go to the calendar on our Sunriver website. Find October 13th. Click on the Zoom program for that date. This activates a “hot link” that will take you into Zoom. The program begins at 5pm, so log in a few minutes early.

Communications Advisory Committee

Your Opinion Matters

The Communications Advisory Committee (CAC) has been working behind the scenes this year to help improve communications here in SunRiver. The Committee has accomplished many of the tasks the Board of Trustees indicated as priorities, including establishing communication guidelines for emails, club/groups, and committee communications, developing a revised New Resident Orientation presentation and format, making recommendations for improvements to the Sentinel, and making suggestions to improve ResidentBoard communications (presented to the Board in August). In addition, the Committee composed and updated the “Why SunRiver” page for the website, submitted the CAC section for the Strategic Plan currently under development and continues to monitor and work with PMP to update and improve the website.

As we continue to look for additional ways to improve SunRiver communications, we would appreciate input from the Residents.

• If you use the website, please let us know how we can improve the content and accessibility.

• If you do not use the website, please let us know how it can be improved so that it would be a useful tool for you to stay connected to the community.

• Let us know how you feel Residents can be updated with HOA information.

• If you do not receive emails from the community, how else can we help you stay informed?

We welcome your input. Send an email through the website by selecting the “Contact Us” tab at the top of the website and selecting the CAC. You can also send a note to the Committee directly at CAC@SunRiverStGeorge. com, speak to one of the Committee members, or drop a note in the suggestion box at the Community Center. No suggestion is too small, and all suggestions are important to us.

Thank you.
