Now that we are fast approaching the end of the year, it’s a great time to pause and think about what we have accomplished in a year. The Lifestyle here at SunRiver St George has really bloomed over the past year. Just one year ago, we were still limited by the pandemic, we did not have large events, and many Clubs/Groups were not back in their normal time slots. Since January, we have come back fully to our highly involved and active Community Center. Our Events Team has added more bus trips, the outdoor concerts are back, our dinner numbers are larger and still growing, and we have added some new, first-time events. The Poolside Café has taken off over the past year. We have kept it open year-round and have added Saturday lunches to the schedule. We have also added fun specials for the many different national holidays. In the Fitness Department, we have hired a variety of specialized instructors who have brought more depth to our fitness programs. We are putting our heads together for new fitness classes, new events, more delicious food, more concerts, and new adventures in Vegas. We are delighted to get creative and keep things exciting and new so we can remain the best and most active community in southern Utah! The new year brings new energy and excitement to those among our staff. Our Lifestyle Team wishes the Community a very happy and safe holiday season, and we hope your new year will be full of new dreams, goals, and journeys. May the New Year’s celebrations fill your hearts with high spirits for the entire year to come!
Great news! We have contracted a new bus company, the St. George Shuttle, to take us to Las Vegas! We are very excited to work with this new company, and we have been assured that it will have working restrooms and arrive in good working condition. Get your tickets today so you can get a jump start on your holiday shopping. We are heading to Fashion Show Mall on Tuesday, December 6th. Let’s fill up this new bus and have a great time. This is the best time to be mall shopping with all the decorations up for the holidays, holiday music playing, and fun decorations in the center of the mall; it will be a great time. We have reserved the larger 55-passenger bus and hope we can get it filled quickly. Time to shop, shop, shop!
It’s time once again for all of us to help those in need and give someone some joy over the holiday season. The Utah Food Bank needs more supplies for those families who need some extra help. We have the bin ready for donations through Tuesday, December 13th. Next time you are at the grocery store, pick up some extra canned goods and drop them in the box. We can feed several people for quite a while with the amount of food we collect at SunRiver St George. It always feels so good to give back to those in need, and we have made it easy and close to home.
December 5th - Papa Gyro 4-7pm
December 12th - Hook’d on Bowls 3:30-6:30pm
December 19th - Wild Thyme 3-6pm
December 27th - Los Carnales 2-6pm
Please be aware that during the coming winter months, we have reduced the number of trucks for each food truck day and have allowed each truck to determine its own operating hours. We want to support their businesses and enjoy their participation during the slower months of winter. Some of these establishments prefer to come earlier even though it can be quite early for dinner and others prefer to come later and stay later even if it requires them to break down in the dark. So, for the coming winter months, please remember to make note of each truck’s hours of operation. You don’t want to miss out on the delectables.
Let’s light up the Community and brighten up the holidays! Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in our first community-wide holiday lights decorating contest.
To participate in this light festival competition, please observe the following rules:
• Displays should follow all Community Governing Documents.
• Entries must be submitted via the ticketing system or paper form by Tuesday, December 6th (forms can be located at the Main Desk).
• Displays will be judged at night. To qualify, all participants must have their lights on by 6:30pm each night between and including the 12th through the 15th.
• Each of the seven neighborhoods will be judged individually, and each neighborhood will have three winners.
• The first and second-place winners for each neighborhood will be chosen by the judges. The third place, People’s Choice Award, will be determined with a vote by the Residents of each corresponding neighborhood.
• The winners will be announced via Association email on Tuesday, December 20th.
• Winners will receive a gift card for the Poolside Café, a photo in the weekly email, and bragging rights for a full year!
The following will be the criteria for judging:
• Each neighborhood representative team will be assigned by the PMP Events Team and will be assigned to judge a neighborhood in which they do not live.
• On Wednesday, December 7th, by 5pm, the Events Team will provide each representative team with a list of homes they will be judging.
• The Events Team will post a list of entries per neighborhood on the website. Each Resident can vote for the People’s Choice Award for entries in their respective neighborhood.
The Neighborhood Representatives will help get the word out and encourage the Residents in their neighborhoods to sign up and participate in the contest.
All the following delicious treats are available on the Website Ticketing System:

• Tuesday, December 13th - Holiday Sock Day
• Friday, December 16th - Holiday Hat Day
• Monday, December 19th - Holiday Colors Day
• Wednesday, December 21st - Ugly Sweater Day
Please note that during December and January, we have some special hours due to several holidays. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, December 25th, and Sunday, January 1st. On these days, the Community Center will not be staffed, which means no guests will be permitted on these two dates. On Friday, December 23rd, Monday, December 26th, and Friday, December 30th, there will be limited staffing from 9am-5pm, so please ensure that your guests are checked in during staffed hours. We want to give the staff time off to be with their loved ones during the holidays.
December 19th through the 22nd and December 27th through the 29th, Weston and his team will have a special fitness class schedule. Come dressed in your holiday colors and join in the fun. They will have a fun schedule for this holiday week. See the schedule below. We know that it’s delicious treats and candies season, so the Fitness Team created a fun schedule that you can follow to stay on track with your fitness goals through the holidays.
It’s time to say goodbye to 2022 and welcome in 2023 with cheer to last throughout the year. We invite you to attend this New Year’s Eve bash on Saturday, December 31st, from 8pm-midnight. There is no better way to welcome in the new year than by dancing and laughing with your friends and neighbors at the New Year’s party held right here in the Community Center Ballroom. There will be plenty of snacks to keep your energy up so you can keep dancing until midnight, and door prizes will be given throughout the evening. DJ Adam (from our Halloween dance) will be back again to spin some fun tunes that you can get groovy to. Want to hear a special song that night? Well, submit your request to the Association Page so we can give it to the DJ. Tickets are on sale now, but they go quickly, so don’t delay. There are three types of tickets you can purchase, $20 for the Ballroom, $18.00 for the MPR, and $12 for the Game Room. The Ballroom and MPR tickets are dancing and food tickets, and the Game Room is reserved for games and food, but no dancing. This is the event to display those sparkly outfits and shine those dancin’ shoes! It’s fun to be able to dress up a few times a year. BYOB so we can toast at midnight. The Events Team will provide sparkling cider for those who wish to toast with a nonalcoholic drink.
What might you consider beyond conventional chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery? Hundreds of treatments beyond chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery are touted as helpful for enhancing cancer treatments, to manage side effects or their aftereffects, or even to be used instead of traditional hospital-based therapy. Others claim to improve the long-term health of cancer survivors or to reduce the chances of tumor recurrence. But how should one separate out those that might be truly effective from all the bogus and poorly regulated options that are promoted?
Most of us are unable to adequately evaluate all the advertisements, media articles, and friendly advice about complementary and alternative medicines (CAM)? Complementary medicines (such as acupuncture or macrobiotic diets) are used alongside standard treatments. Alternative medicines (such as Ayurvedic or naturopathic remedies) are used instead of standard treatment. Some cancer centers offer integrative medicine; this combines CAM practices with conventional western therapy to address more of the mental, physical, and spiritual needs of cancer patients. A panel of professionals knowledgeable in these areas will review various options and answer questions during a panel discussion to be held in the Community Center Ballroom on Thursday, December 8th, at 11am. It will also be offered via Zoom for those unable to attend in person. For more information, look for Resident Service Committee announcements in upcoming emails from PMP. Alternatively, contact Hans de Haan at hdeh@sunrivertoday.com or (858) 449-1218.
While the Resident Services Committee (RSC) is coming off a banner year in 2022, the year ahead looks even brighter. The entire year’s schedule of educational seminar topics and presenters is available on our web page. Here are just a few of the highlights:
January:
Again, the above represents only some of the many monthly seminars and events scheduled for next year. We would like to thank one of our partners, the Intermountain Foundation (IHC), for their willingness to send practicing professionals to SunRiver to address these topical and timely, health-related senior concerns.
For this month, on December 8th, 2022, in the Ballroom at 11am, the seminar topic and presentation will be “Alternative and Complimentary Medicine for Treating Cancer.”
Also, let us not forget the many ongoing RSC activities, such as: Stepping On - a seven-week, fall prevention workshop series (there are still a few openings for January 2023 classes).
Caregiver Support Group - a monthly meeting meant expressly for the needs of those giving constant care to loved ones.
Walk With A Doca monthly (except when it is too hot) chance to visit with a medical professional while getting some exercise.
Coffee With a Copa monthly opportunity to sit down with St. George’s finest and ask questions about home and personal safety, traffic, etc.
Thank you for your support this past year. It has been a wonderful year of progress and innovation while meeting the needs of our Community.
For additional information on any topic mentioned above, please contact Anita Stiens, RSC Chair, at nitarita@gmail.com.
Shocking news about battery fires: the fire department has trouble putting them out!
We have heard about electric cars catching fire after the hurricane in Florida and some subsequent problems extinguishing the fires. More and more household items are powered by lithium-ion batteries, including cell phones, laptops, power tools, bicycles, those golf carts with lithium-ion batteries, and toys – the same type of batteries used in many electric cars. These batteries are generally safe unless they are improperly charged or damaged. Then they can cause dangerous fires. Always follow the care and charging directions exactly. With the upcoming holidays, it is a good idea to consider the leading causes of house fires and take appropriate action to protect yourselves. The leading causes are:
• Appliances and Equipment: any device that generates heat (stoves, clothes dryers, heaters) or heats up with extended use (computers, fans) is a potential fire hazard
• Candles
• Holiday Decorations
• Electrical Systems and Devices
• Smoking
• Chemicals and Gases
• Lightning
• Children
In SunRiver, our homes are modern and typically meet building and fire codes. That doesn’t mean they are totally fireproof! Making sure we are careful with heat-generating equipment, candles, and other fire hazards is prudent all year round, but especially at Christmas. Those Christmas trees and decorations need to be monitored. You especially don’t want to leave home with your Christmas lights on in the house! Have a great and SAFE holiday season. 435.216.3130 Kris@myecoinsulation.com

One of our favorite forms of meditation is guided imagery. Guided imagery involves the immersion of all five of our senses. We recently enjoyed a walk through the forest led by a member who had a career in forestry. Through his description of place, we were led through the forest on a trail to a mountain lake. We visualized the trees, flowers, and animals. We heard the cascading stream. We smelled the fresh mountain air and felt the breeze. Each participant added their own personal details. As we were brought back to the room, we felt as if we had gone on a mini-vacation.
The benefits of guided imagery meditation are many. It helps combat stress and anxiety - helping us feel calm and alert. It ives. It helps us maintain alertness and enhances creativity by er forms of meditation, our minds tend to wander. When we are guided on a journey, our full mind is focused on the inner
As in all meditation practices, you want to find a comfortable position, sitting or lying with your spine straight. Begin by breathing slowly and deeply and relax all parts of your body. You may want to visualize your own journey to a favorite place, but when you are led by another, it can be easier to relax into the experience.
You are welcome to journey with us at 10am on Wednesdays in the MultiPurpose Room.

In October, we closed out a fun 2022 season of dancing and listening to the great music provided by the “One Man Band,” Kevin Auernig. We will be back on Tuesday, January 24th, to open our 2023 season. This dance night does not just happen; there is a team of Residents making this fun activity a reality. Our Dance Coordinators, Bob and Ginger Bennett, work with our many volunteers to get everything ready to help make the evening enjoyable for all of you. As you come to the dance, you will meet our Ticket Takers, Lila Timpson, Maryann Cousineau, and Patti Greene. You’ll also meet our Bar Tenders, Wayne and Dee Kanady, Ron and Angela Woodward, Steve and Ann Knight, Bryan and Linda Enarson, and Annie Bennett. Then, behind the scenes, are our Communications Staff: Larry and Peggy Schneider.
We hope you will be able to join us next year at Dancin’ to the Oldies, the longest-running social event here in SunRiver, run entirely by Residents. If you would like to join our team, just drop us a note at dancin.2.the.oldies@ sunrivertoday.com.

If you could use a little time away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays and life in general, we have some great opportunities for you. Our December hikes will be close to home, and with the cooler weather, we are able to hike in our own backyards. This month’s hikes take us near Santa Clara and Ivins as well as, quite literally, in our own backyard on the Ranger Bart Trail. You can find the full hike descriptions on the Hiking Calendar on the SunRiver website. Look them over, pick out one or two or more, and join us out on the trail.

Many people feel the “Battle of the Bulge” remains a futile effort to avoid gaining weight over the holidays. That’s the contemporary view of the Battle of the Bulge. However, in mid-December of 1944, American, British, and Canadian forces were stunned by a German counteroffensive on the Western Front. The German army made significant advances in the first week. They threatened to separate American forces from the British and Canadian forces and potentially isolate these troops into another Dunkirk scenario. This is the real Battle of the Bulge.
In the end, Germany lost hundreds of tanks and aircraft and suffered over 100,000 casualties. Did the German army have a viable chance to succeed? Why weren’t 1,000 German airplanes able to achieve temporary air superiority? Ron Smith will use numerous maps and graphics to describe the battle. Also, you will have a chance to see real film footage via American Experience: The Battle of the Bulge. As late as November of 1944, many Americans felt the war might be over by Christmas. Instead, American, British, and Canadian forces were surprised by the deadliest battle on the Western Front.
The Ballroom presentation takes place on Tuesday, December 13th. Doors open at 5pm. The program begins at 5:30pm. You must purchase tickets in advance. Popcorn tickets cost just $1.50. Sandwich tickets cost $5.50. We also have a free Zoom program on Thursday, December 15th. Go to the calendar on our SunRiver website, find December 13th and click on the Zoom program for that date. This activates a “hot link” that will take you to Zoom. The program begins at 5pm, so link in a few minutes early.
It is far better to give than to receive. During this holiday season, let us keep this thought in mind! During the flurry of parties, gifts, Christmas songs, sales, food, and fun, remember those who are less fortunate and have so little. We are fortunate to be part of the ‘haves’ and not the ‘have-nots’. Let us try to find ways to share a gift of love with a charity of your choice after this year of hardships around the world. It brings to mind the ole saying, “Blessings flow from rivers of water as one opens up their heart.” So, let’s spread a little cheer to the many.
Next, I would like to thank all my Red Hat Sisters for your love and support through the last four years of my reign. It has been an amazing time of friendship and fun. Just seeing everyone brings many memories and sweet smiles to me, but now is the time for me to retire. Red Hat is now putting the word out for the position of ‘new queen’. One of you certainly needs to take the ‘reign’ and step up to be the new Red Hat Queen in April 2023. So, I am asking you to look deep down within yourselves and find that ‘Queen’ within. If you have any questions after the ‘heart-felt looking’, I would love to chat with you.
If you missed the Color Country Model Railroad Layout Tour last month, here is another opportunity to see the railroads in SunRiver. Model Railroads in SunRiver will be operating Christmas trains on Wednesday, December 28th, from 1-4pm. Model Railroading in SunRiver has really grown over the years. If you have not seen some of these model trains in action, this is your chance; if you already have, this is a great opportunity to see them at a very special time of year. For the location of these railroads, log on to the SunRiver website at www.SunRiverStGeorge. com, go to the Clubs and Groups web page, and select Model Railroads (SR Junction) in the Crafts & Hobbies section. You will find a tab for the Holiday Train Tour there.
If you are looking for a railroad that you have not yet seen here in SunRiver, then you need to stop over at Joe Adair’s HO Layout at 1784 Morane Manor and see a new railroad under construction. For outdoor railroads, see Dick and Evelyn Wilson, Keith Johnson, Larry Schneider, or Amy Meyers’ layouts. Lionel trains can be seen at Byron Rasmussen and Dan Mangiaracina’s homes. How about the American Flyer? You can see this layout at Richard Schacht’s. Eldon Chouinard will be displaying an N-scale layout; this is the smallest scale we have in the Community and a rare opportunity to see this railroad operating. Finish off the tour with a visit to a man cave and see Bryan Enarson operating three independent railroads: an HO, an American Flyer, and a Lionel - all in one location.
For a fun afternoon, come see us, if only for a few minutes. If you cannot make this date, please contact us for an alternate day and time to come and visit, as we all like to run the trains. Please note, since some of the railroads are outdoors, if and only if it is raining or snowing, we would need to change to a different date. For more information, contact Larry Schneider at LSandSRR@gmail.com.
