STUDENT LEARNING AND PROGRESS
LEARNING TO READ WITH PHONICS SES beginner readers are using “decodable books” to help make reading a snap! Decodable books are an evidence-based and systematic approach to learning to read. Students learn phonics skills in a sequential and systematic manner. Raider readers learn 44 sounds in the English language and their corresponding letters that represent their sounds. Decodable books include words with phonics patterns that have been taught and begin with consonant-vowel-consonant words and move slowly to include more complex spelling patterns. “As they learn new sounds and letters, they apply this knowledge through reading enjoyable books,” says SISD’s Texas Reading Academy Literacy Coach Kristen Nester. “Decodable books encourage children to sound out words by using decoding strategies rather than guessing what words are from pictures or predicting from other cues. The pictures in decodable books support the story, but not the specific words, Did so that students learn You and practice to read Know? words by utilizing phonics patterns.” SISD Libraries circulated
