The Weekend Sun

Bay designers win regional awards The Bay of Plenty regional winners of the ADNZ/ Resene Design Awards were announced on Saturday evening at Mills Reef Winery. Brendon Gordon of Brendon Gordon Architecture took out multiple awards. His first appearance to the stage was for the Gordon Residence, which took out the Residential New Home over 250 square metre category. The judges commented that “this is a home of apparent simplicity, concealing deep and sensitive thought about the placement of spaces and the rituals of domestic living”. Later in the evening Brendon returned to the stage, picking up the regional Alteration and

Additions Award with his Reid Residence. For the Residential New Home under 250sqm category the judges were

quick to establish a winner and were impressed by the design quality of a group home. For Will Tatton of Will Tatton Architecture creating the Urban Homes show home required fresh thinking. “It needed to be a design which would be enjoyed by many differ-

ent owners and sites.” As the night drew to a close it was Darryl Church of Darryl Church Architecture who stole the show, picking up three awards in a row for his Waipa Wood Processing Workshop. Taking out the Commercial Industrial, Commercial Interior and the Resene Colour in Design awards, there was little doubt this talented architect was out to illustrate just what innovative and excellent architectural design is about. The awards are about celebrating excellence and showcasing the talent and creative influence of architects and architectural designers across New Zealand.

A worthy challenge Elegance and balance At Will Tatton Architecture, turning small houses into homes with the flair and style of a larger home is just one of the many challenges they love to undertake. As winners of the Architectural Design NZ award for the residential new home under 250 square metres category, WTA is passionate about designing affordable, sophisticated, interesting small homes. The company’s design for Urban Homes’ showhome for Thorne Group took out the regional award – something Will Tatton is thrilled with. “For me it’s almost more exciting than winning the design of a larger house. “Small homes are a great design challenge.” Will says the idea was to take a low budget, small site and produce something that has flair and style. “UH and WTA are about clever choices for materials, spaces and fittings - achieving a better living experience - without the extra cost.” Visit the showhome at 299 Carmichael Rd Brookfield-Bethlehem.

Brendon Gordon Architecture is celebrating after taking home two awards at the Architectural Design NZ/Resene Design Awards. The two winning designs received massive praise from the judges, who made special mention of their elegance and classic symmetry. Brendon Gordon is rapt with the awards and believes it shows his team’s dedication and solution-orientated approach to design. “It is very nice to get that industry recognition; we really enjoy what we do. “We offer a very personalised service and we keep working with things until we come up with the right solution.” Brendon’s Reid Residence design won him the Alteration and Additions Award. The project involved joining two eighties town houses together on Marine Parade. “It’s fun, and it’s unique and special. It’s great to put things together rather than chop them up.” Gordon Residence, a studio designed personally for his brother, Miles Gordon, took out the Residential New Home over 250 square metre category.
