Registrationsarenowopenfor MyHazWaste,afree,organised drop-offdaybeingheldin TePukeonSunday,May25, offeringasafewaytodisposeof householdhazardouswaste.
OrganisedbyWesternBay ofPlentyDistrictCouncilin partnershipwith3RGroup andfundedbytheWaste MinimisationLevy,itwillbe thefirstinaline-upofregular pop-upcollectionsplanned throughouttherohe(district).
“Registeredresidentswillbeable todropoffhouseholdhazardous wasteatadedicatedlocationfor safedisposal,”WesternBayof PlentyDistrictCouncilplanning andbehaviourchangeleadIlze Kruissaid.
“Properdisposalofhazardous wasteiscriticalforprotecting ourenvironmentbypreventing harmfulchemicalsfromleaching intooursoilandwaterways. Thisisachanceforpeopleto clearoutchemicalsfromunder theirkitchensinkandgarden shedandhavethemsafelyand
responsiblydisposedoftoreduce environmentalharm.”
Healthandsafety
KruissaidfromMay1,the district’sthreerecyclingcentres, atAthenree,KatikatiandTe Puke,wouldnolongeraccept hazardouswaste.
“Thisisduetoincreasing healthandsafetyrequirements, chemicalhandlingtraining, highandunpredictablecostsfor thedisposalofchemicalsand internalresourcesrequiredto undertakethesehazardouswaste collections,”shesaid.
Peopleareinvitedtoregister fortheTePukedisposaldropoffbeforeMay17.Those whoregisterwillbecontacted beforethedaytoconfirmtheir dedicatedtimeslotandthe locationdetails.
“Iencouragepeopletoregister quicklybecausespotsarelimited. Nounregisteredwastewillbe acceptedandwalk-upsarenot possible.Thisisbecauseweneed toknowwhat’scominginto ensureourcontractorisprepared tosafelyhandlethematerials.”
3RGroup’sChemCollectservice hasbeenmanaginghazardous
wastecollectionsfor businessesandorganisations formorethan13years.
“Allhazardousmaterials collectedaresortedfortheir futuredisposalpathways. Mostmaterialscanbe disposedofwithinNew Zealandthroughcertified disposalcompanies. Materialsthatcan’tbe managednationallygo offshoretobedisposedof safely,”ChemCollectgeneral

Localfirechiefsarecallingfor supportforapetitionthat,if successful,couldcreateasignificant safetynetforvolunteerfirefighters.
KatherineLamont,amemberofthe QueenstownVolunteerFireBrigade,has puttogetheraparliamentarypetitionto changeACClegislationtogivevolunteer firefightersthesameACCcoverageand benefitsastheirpaidcolleagues.
Thepetitionstates:“12,000volunteer firefightersareexcludedfromcertain ACCbenefitsduetobeingclassifiedas non-employees.Webelieveensuringthe safety,health,andwell-beingofthese volunteersmustbeatoppriorityfor thegovernment;weneedaction;our volunteersarevital;thereisadutyof carethatisbeingmissed,andvolunteers aresuffering”.
TePukefirechiefDaleLindsaysaid volunteerfirefightersarenotalways coveredforillness,injuryormental healthissues.
Hesaideveniftheywereeligible,they wouldstillhavetoproveasingleincident hascausedamentalinjurysuchasPTSD.
Hesaidthatisasituationwhichdoes notsupportthosewhohaveserious mentalhealthconcernsbecauseoftheir yearsofexposuretomanydifferenttypes oftraumaticincidents.
“Whyshouldwenotgetthesamelevel ofattentionaffordedtootherpeoplein thesamevocation?”
Lindsaysaiditcouldbearguedthat asvolunteers,itispossibletheyare lesspreparedforwhattheymight
face,althoughinrecentyearsFireand Emergencyhasrecognisedtheimpactson firefighters’mentalhealth.
“Theyaretryingtotrainusmoreforit, butyoucanonlydosomuchtrainingfor theconfrontingstuffintermsofmental health.”
Lindsayhasbeenavolunteerfirefighter for40yearsandsaidheknowsatsome calls;theeffectscanbeinstantaneousand massivelytriggering.
“Youcanencountermassivetrauma fromonescene.I’vestillgotmultiple scenesIcanrecallvividlyinmymindthat willneverleaveme.”
Ontheotherhand,heknowsof volunteerswhohavesufferedbecauseof thecumulativebuild-upofstressesand pressures.
“Thenthetiniestthingcantriggera meltdown.”
Lindsaysaidvolunteershavedayjobs andiftheycan’tperformthosejobsdue toemotionalproblemsresultingfrom firefighting,that’s“prettyunfair”.
Withtheincreasedawarenesshascomea lotmorecarewithnewrecruits.
“Wedomakepeopleawareofitwhen theyjoin,there’salotoffocusand trainingaroundthementalhealthsideof thingsnow.Wearevery,verycarefulhow weexposenewrecruitsto[situations].”
TheMinistryofBusiness,Innovation andEmployment’saccidentcompensation policymanagerBridgetDuleysaidthe no-faultschemeprovidesbroad-based covertoeveryoneinNewZealandwhois injuredinanaccident.
“UnderACC,volunteerfirefighters areeligibleforthistypeofcover,which includesanyphysicalinjuriestheysuffer onthejobsuchasscrapes,sprains,broken bonesorheadinjuries.
“Whereaphysicalinjurycausesa mentalinjury,thementalinjuryiseligible forcoverifthephysicalinjuryisalready coveredunderACC.”
Forexample,ifavolunteerfirefighter receivedcoverfollowinganaccidentwhere theyfellandsufferedaspinalinjury,they mayalsobeeligibleformentalinjurycover ifitcouldbeproventhattheysubsequently developeddepressionasaresultoftheir physicalinjury.
“ACCalsoprovidesadditionaltypesof coverthatarespecifictopaidemployment, includingcoverforwork-relatedmental injuriesandoccupationaldiseases.
“Thesetypesofcoverareavailable onlywhentheinjuryiscausedbypaid work.Work-relatedclaimsarefunded byemployersbasedontheirpayroll.As volunteersarenotreflectedasemployees inworkplacepayrollsystems,funding additionalcoverinafairwaymayrequire changestohowACCleviesarecollected.”
Duleysaidpastexpansionstothe AccidentCompensationSchemeto coverdifferentmentalinjurieshavebeen carefullyconsideredtoensuretheyremain accident-relatedandbalancetheinterests ofACClevypayersandconsiderations aroundfinancialsustainability.

ScottSimpson,theMinisterforACC, saidheacknowledgesthevolunteers inemergencyserviceswhomakean incrediblyimportantandselfless contributiontocommunitiesaround NewZealand.
“Inotethepetitionclosesforsignatures thismonth,andIacknowledgetheefforts ofthosewhoareraisingawarenessof thisissuethatisclosetotheirhearts. Thereisaprocessforpetitionsmadeto Parliament,andIwillbewatchingthatas ittakesplace.”
MaketūchieffireofficerShaneGourlay supportsthepetition.Hesaidthereare “afewthings”careerfirefighterscanget thatvolunteerscan’t,and“that’sjustone ofthem”.
