The Weekend Sun
Polytech engineering a brighter tomorrow Jump-start your career in engineering with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic’s Certificate in Engineering. Rather than fighting for an apprenticeship out in the workforce, why not first build up your skills with professional tutors at the polytechnic?
Beginning September 5 and ending in June 2013, the Certificate in Engineering effectively counts as the first year of an engineering apprenticeship. The course teaches students all the basic industry skills, including workshop safety, welding, engineering drawing, basic trade calculations and measurement, as well as plenty of practical
The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic has one of the best engineering training facilities in New Zealand. machining and fabrication skills. At the end of the programme graduates can decide whether to continue in an apprenticeship in either mechanical or fabrication engineering. Mark Hendry, group leader engineering, says the programme would suit anyone practically and mechanically minded – someone who likes to fix things, pull things apart and build things. Having some mathematical knowledge also helps. “The advantage is that students can generally get more credit here than in the workplace. It really jumpstarts their career.”
He says the programme is as practical as the polytechnic can make it. “The polytech has one of the best engineering training facilities in NZ. “We cover both mechanical and fabrication so students have a lot of flexibility, they don’t have to make up their mind about specialisation so early. “By the time they’ve gained some work place experience and graduate they can go either direction.” Apply today for the course starting September 5.
