What is Degree Show 2021?

Degree Show 2021 is an event organised by Perth UHI, BA (Hons) Visual Communication and Design Students. It showcases our diverse range of skills and interests from photography and illustration, to street art, design thinking, graphic design, video and animation.

FOURTH YEAR Who are we?

We are a collective of designers, developers, illustrators and photographers who believe that good design should be at the heart of everything we create. Even though we are a small group, we all are very passionate with our work.

ABOUT ME I’m Liam, a lifelong skateboarder and graphic designer. I enjoy working in a variety of mediums and my outputs change ranging on projects. Previous projects have included both digital and physical outputs. I take inspiration from multiple sources of varying interests including things from skateboarding, active travel, gaming, Esports, retro and futuristic design, music and more.

MY WORK FOCUS I enjoy gaining inspiration from a variety of different sources. Styles vary in each and trying to combine elements from these sources is always fun. It leads to unexpected delights which is one of the best parts of creating art for projects. I am always keen to try new styles and expand knowledge in the creative fields. You can never learn it all!

FUTURE ROUTES Upon completion of this course, I will continue to work on my skills and techniques that my educational foundation was built on. Every day is a school day! In terms of furthering my career, I will be looking for opportunities both locally working for businesses to help provide for the city anyway I can, also nationally in Esports and other creative fields I enjoy a being a part of.

SKATEBOARD 101 Created as a potential solution to the 2021 RSA brief “The Right to Breathe” which looks at rising issues of air pollution we face. With all my projects having a skateboarding angle on them I focused on looking at the use of skateboarding as a form of active travel. A perhaps lesser known form of transport which can be used in urban environments. A zine and social media campaign to help provide key information that is frequently asked by newcomers to the activity.

COUNTERPARTS Whilst trying new styles and methods I came up with this artwork for the Canadian band “Counterparts” based on their most recent album “nothing left to love.” This was a fun piece to make and even the band replied on twitter saying they thought it looked sick.

SKELP ESPORTS ROCKET LEAGUE ANNOUCEMENT Esports is an industry on the rise full of graphical opportunities ranging from match day graphics, merch designs and social media content. I was approached by Scottish Esports organisation Skelp to create a graphic to announce their Rocket League team. This graphic was shown on their social media channels and also released live on their twitch live stream to promote the signing.

ABOUT ME Hola! I’m Layla and I am a designer doing the last year of my degree in visual communication.

I’ve done freelance work for companies doing logos and advertisements around Perth. I love to learn new ways to improve my drawings and teach myself more and more online and finding new types of art to explore like most recently I have been looking into NFT/ Cryptoart and 3D modeling and animation.

MY WORK FOCUS The main focus of my work is illustration. I love to do pieces based on themes and characters from games or environments inspired by games. I’ve always grown up playing games and feel that I get most of my inspiration from the time I spend playing different games. In the past I have designed tattoo flash based on games like Halo and Borderlands as those are games from my childhood I Intend to get later on in life.

FUTURE ROUTES After finishing my degree I hope to move into the tattoo industry. My plan is to try and get into a tattoo apprenticeship with a local tattoo shop and work more on my artistic abilities observing artists that have done this work for years and do my best to learn what that they have to offer and to try and make my art the best it can be. I have had an interest in the tattoo industry since I was 10 and have always been inspired by the intricate detail that each individual tattoo has. I want to make designs people will take and run with and be happy to get tattooed.

COMMISSIONS As an artist I create tattoo flash commissions and designs for friends and customers, this is a design that was commissioned for two friends who love their fashion and like to match so I designed a tattoo based upon an outfit they had wore in the past together and posted to Instagram.

SOCIETY 13 CLOTHING Society 13 is a brand created by the artist with the aim of being 100% recyclable and ethically sourced without costing a premium like most other ethically sourced brands, the designs are inspired by current street wear styles at the time using bold contrasting designs within a minimalistic style.

RED COLLECTION This is a collection of NFT crypto art pieces depicting the character RED created by the artist overlooking a city, each piece is a Unique 1/1 design showing the character in my different styles.

ABOUT ME Hi! I am Sunil. I live in Cumbernauld. I was born in Nepal. I love photography and creating films. I’m happiest when I’m out in nature with my camera, filming, or building something that didn’t exist before. I am always looking for new skills and challenges MY WORK FOCUS My work covers different aspects of visual communication; from graphic design and webdesign to cinematography and animation. But photography has always been my central focus.

FUTURE ROUTES Looking at the future, I see myself running my own business or working as freelancer, based on photography and filming. Potentially I plan to launch my own company which will focus on commercial campaigns using various digital materials.

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION I grew up in Nepal, surrounded by the best nature can offer; the diverse culture, beautiful temples, and astounding landscapes. This is where I begin capturing and freezing those beautiful moments in my camera. Since then, I have always had a camera on my side to capture and share a different perspective of Nature through my lens. SOCIALBIND A mobile app based social media learning platform concept designed for food and hospitality establishments. This app is designed not only to act as a learning platform for these businesses but also to help them gain access to information, tools and man power to improve their social media marketing.

MUSIC WHERE IT MATTERS This smart headphone design was one of the concept I came up with which could improve lives of people living with dementia for my HND graded unit. The concept involved a wireless headphone design which would work alongside with the EQ Radio (Emotion Recognition using Wireless Signal), finding ans storing music that matters to the who are affected by dementia.

ABOUT ME Hi my name is Adam McGowan and I am currently studying Visual Communication at Perth UHI. I enjoy the challenges that come with design and learning new techniques of design.

The main thing that has always attracted me to design is the fact that it’s diverse and there is always a different project around the corner. I get bored easily and the diversity of design is definitely the best thing about it.

MY WORK FOCUS The areas of design that I enjoy most are experimenting with typography, logo design and package design. The area which I hope to gain more experience in would be XP design, it’s an area which I have touched upon in my third year and would love to build upon my knowledge of it.

FUTURE ROUTES In future my aim would be to further build my experience by working for a few design companies. Ideally. I would aim to work for different design studios to gain a varied amount of experience. My eventual aim would be to work in London and possibly abroad.

SUMMITS In this project the requirement of the brief was design branding material for an outdoors clothing company. This was a very enjoyable project as it meant I got to play around with beautiful photographic images of mountainous landscapes and designing the logo was also a very enjoyable part of the project. This was one of my first breakthroughs in terms of getting used to the design process as a whole.

SPLIT ILLUSTRATION

This project was fun as it was mainly art based. The poster is made up of strips of two lino prints, both of them being red and black. This idea came from the fact that Frankenstein is made from strips of human flesh. The strips of paper are a visually dark representation of this.

RIVER

The aim of this project was to design a branding for a cologne which was inclusive to all genders. This involved researching colour schemes and typography that would reflect this. In many ways it was a challenging project but a rewarding project in a multitude of different ways.

ABOUT ME Hello! My name is Anna. I have a creative mind and have always tried to find creative solutions to any problems and challenges I may face in everyday life. I enjoy working in a wide range of mediums to creative pieces that others can enjoy and relate to, through this I also love to explore and discover new skills and techniques to gain a wider skill set.

MY WORK FOCUS I like to work in a range of mediums as I believe it’ll help me work in the creative industries. I tend to lean towards illustration, logo design and photography but do also have experience with film and animation. I like to use these mediums as a way to express myself helping me through difficult situation, while also creating design solutions to other people’s problems.

FUTURE ROUTES My aims for the future are to progress onto 4th year to continue to develop my skills and therefore widening my potential job opportunities. My hopes are to be able to continue to sell my artwork along with being commissioned for more work adding to my portfolio and work experience.

SPLIT ILLUSTRATION This illustration piece was done to represent the loss of self-control. Illustration can be a way to help express your inner feelings and this piece is no different, giving a visual to an emotion so many other people feel can help yourself and others through difficult situations while providing a creative outlet for those feelings.

PARALLEL FINN LOGO DESIGN A commissioned logo design for a Scottish motorcyclist social media pages and YouTube channel. The client wanted a minimal design that represented exactly what his channel offers. Therefore, a minimalistic style scenery within a motorbike outline would work best with a Scottish flag background to represent where he’s based.

MENTAL HEALTH PHOTOGRAPHY

A photography piece done for a mental health project to represent how it feels to live with a mental illness. The lack of colour was purposeful to emphasise the portrayal of emptiness mental health leaves its victim with.

ABOUT ME I’m a multi-disciplinary visual communication designer. My studies and experiences are in visual & graphic design, photography, and illustration. I am a creative thinker, problem solver and enthusiastic learner. I’m very interested in sustainable development and the concept of circular design. I worked on several projects tackling complex contemporary issues such as climate change through strategic design process and I found it very meaningful a fulfilling. I try to incorporate sustainable approaches into my practice as much as I can. I believe that good design is environmentally friendly, simple, and fun.

MY WORK FOCUS Throughout my practice I mostly work on projects that focus on Graphic Design, Illustration and Photography. I use digital media as well as the traditional ones. The range of my experience covers everything from wedding & portrait photography, surface pattern, guerrilla marketing to branding & packaging design. I love clean, minimalistic design as well as complex, colourful graphics, and I think the list of my various experience reflects my diverse interests.

FUTURE ROUTES In the future, I can see myself thrive in a team environment that focuses on humancentred design. However, I’m used to working on my own as a freelance graphic designer & photographer and I’m planning on opening my own studio one day. I would also consider career in education as I would love to deliver different kinds of creative workshops. I will keep searching for a new and challenging position, one which will make best use of my existing skills and experiences.

LAST DAISY

This is my favourite piece of work. Through this black and white photograph, I was aiming to capture the fragility of Nature. The image shows what an ideal relationship between Nature and human should look like. It implies that humans should be kinder to the Nature, care for it and try not to disrupt its balance.

MY BEST FRIEND This piece of digital art was a commissioned work for a client who lost his beloved dog due to an accident. I’ve been asked to create a comforting digital illustration that pictures his dog in hands of Gaia, which in Greek mythology is a personification of Earth and the ancestral mother of all life. In other words, I created goddess holding his best friend so he could rest knowing his dog is taken care of.

REBRANDING OF LUSH’S EMOTIONAL BRILLIANCE

I chose to work on this project within Graded Unit 2 because it was based around circular design and sustainable materials. I designed packaging for Emotional Brilliance range that presents Lush’s vegan makeup products. On top of it I got to create colourful patterns for the labels which I enjoyed very much.

ABOUT ME Hi, I’m Christopher George. My love for creating works to tell a story or to convey a mood is essentially the start of all my works. I love learning new art styles and methods to do different designs.

MY WORK FOCUS Although I prefer to do more illustrative works, I am capable of doing other graphic design and animation. I recently have gotten attached to creating and consuming pixel art and have taken some interest in game design and an artist’s role in a game studio.

FUTURE ROUTES For the future, I would like to work on anything illustrative, animation and game design.

My end goal is to do what I love as a freelancer when I feel I have had enough experience in the field.

CONCEPT POSTER FOR “OLIVER” PLAY IN TIVOLI THEATRE

During my HNC, we were given a brief to create a concept poster for the “Oliver!” play that was happening in the Tivoli theatre. The buildings were randomly shaped and slanted to represent old England. In the background I wanted to create a contrasting figure, of Fagin the villain in the story, using curved lines to show his evil nature and to make him stand out.

PERIODIC TABLE POSTER FOR THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY

This is a poster that was done for the Aberdeen science centre for the 150th anniversary of the periodic table. The aim was to create something eye-catching and visually pleasing. Each element has an electron shell arrangement which creating a visually striking poster. I saw the resemblance to a blueprint and created other assets and facts that went with a similar theme.

CONCEPT ART FOR PIXEL ART ARPG During my HND we had to create a brief from an imaginary client and then be the designer for it as-well. The brief was from an indie game company who were outsourcing the designer for the concept of art. This is one of three pieces that was made to show the intro shot before a boss fight. The piece is made in Photoshop and made to represent a 2d game with symmetrical pixel art.

ABOUT ME I got into design as a by-product of being in rock and metal bands and working in gig promotion – simply put, somebody needed to make the posters. This rapidly became my favourite thing to do, and after a bit of college and a small amount of freelance work, I decided it would be best to amalgamate my experience into a tangible degree for more benefit.

MY WORK FOCUS Graphic design is my background, but I’ve also moved into areas such as illustration, branding, motion graphics and traditional print methods such as silkscreen and linocut.

Areas that are of particular interest to me in terms of work are music, both merchandising and promotion, and illustration in the mediums of limited-edition prints, graphic novels, and anything in the horror genre, such as commissioned drawings, collaborative works and tattoos.

FUTURE ROUTES After my studies and certainly after a holiday, I would like to focus on growth in terms of profile and social media, and also work on my illustrative techniques, perhaps doing further focused study. My aim in two or three years would be to be an established freelance designer and illustrator, working on several projects that would enable me to experience different fields while also applying my unique style and vision.

DIGITAL ART, PERSONAL, 2021

This piece is inspired by my love of horror illustration and tattoo art, where I tried to recreate the feel of a sheet of “flash” tattoo art, but with a sinister, ghoulish style. In most of my personal work, I tend to draw in black and white, and am heavily influenced by the works of Junji Ito and Charles Burns when it comes to my own illustrations.

GRAPHIC DESIGN, COURSE WORK, 2021 One of my final pieces for my submission in Design Practice, where I was tasked with creating visual assets for a fictional Audible Original title based on crime in the Old West.

I enjoyed working with photography for a change and enjoyed creating narratives to go alongside design concepts.

DIGITAL ART, COMMISSION, 2021 An illustration I created for noted underground metal artist Tommy Concrete. For this piece I was allowed free reign to conjure up whatever bizarre imagery I wanted, and somehow ended up with this malign forest entity. Working in Procreate has really enabled me to try out new techniques without fear of wasting time or money, and this was a rare colour piece.

ABOUT ME My Name is Daniel Allan, I’m a designer from Aberdeen, I find my strengths in designing unique styles and finding new ways of incorporating different mediums in my work. I’m particularly strong when I’m working with illustrations and typography and thrive when creating unique compositions for my designs. As well as this I enjoy using different methods to get new results that I haven’t seen before.

MY WORK FOCUS After using a range of design methods in my time I feel most comfortable when working with bright, new illustrations and incorporating different type styles with them making them go hand in hand with one another. As well as this I enjoy the idea of creating trendy designs that everyday people would find and appealing and could see myself creating clothing designs in the future.

FUTURE ROUTES I can see myself in the future working with clothing companies and trying to create new and attractive styles that would be seen on items of clothing such as t-shirts and hoodies.

I also have an ambition to create my own clothing brand in my career that would focus primarily on my style of designs and can imagine them becoming quite trendy in the eyes of younger people. Doing this I would want to create it through social media growth a skill I think I have l learned along the way.

ReThinkYourInk This designs I created for a sustainability brief to help reduce graphic designers’ impact on the world’s pollution. The idea I went with was to inform people through electronic advertisements about the issues non-renewable printer ink can have on the environment.

The overall design that you can see takes inspiration from Rorschach images, that are made to look like various things different to each person.

HONG KONG RIOT POSTERS The idea behind these designs came from the riots that took place in Hong Kong during 2019 as the public felt their privacy was at risk from the government supposedly watching and tracking them. All of the designs were created by myself and were influenced around the huge population of China and how silenced they are by their government when it comes to political views.

AERO SPACE KINROS This poster was created as part of a client led brief for a space and aviation centre in Kinross. The style behind it took inspiration from the shape of the earth as well as supporting designs around it showing connotations of the same thing. The colour scheme followed one that the company already had and I feel the composition of the piece brings all of the different aspects such as the text and illustrations together.

ABOUT ME As a designer I want to make work that if my younger self were to see it, they would think “Wow!”. I always try to create that wow-factor in my work. I am drawn to the detail, reworking the obvious and amplifying the inconspicuous. Each new brief is like a puzzle to be solved, and I love cracking them wide open and seeing where they will take me. My journey as an artist started with making short films, drawing, and lagging behind everywhere I went taking photos. Now my skill set has developed to include graphic design, branding and social design.

MY WORK FOCUS I am interested in everything, which makes it tricky to focus! However, I am especially interested in Illustration, Graphic Design, Installations, and Photography. I try to create solutions that are thoroughly thought through but with a twist of fun. I usually work with pen and paper, laying everything out in the real world before sending it into the digital world for finishing touches and to share with you. I love work that shakes up the normal every day. I am interested in my work being of use to a community or cause, as well as being visually appealing.

FUTURE ROUTES Degree in hand, I intend to establish myself as an artist by building on my online presence alongside an online business. I have always wanted to make a YouTube channel so that is first up! Beyond that theatre and TV have always been an interest of mine and using my skills to support theatre of all forms re-emerging after COVID would be very fulfilling, perhaps backstage in the art department or in community theatre. I love working with young people and using my creative skills to get them excited about art. It would also be very cool to work at the BBC someday.

GARDEN INSTALLATION Designed for ReCAP Festival, I was challenged to put life back into one of the vennels in Perth for one day only. I created a multi-sensory garden path, with real turf underfoot and the ceiling covered in vivid paper flowers. I left wind chimes at the entrances, hid floral air fresheners in the foliage and covered the plain walls with fairy lights and sparkly windmills to completely transform what was quite a grim space into something totally different.

My piece was featured on the front page of the Perthshire Advertiser and launched @ ljttlemoon_art on Instagram.

ANNIVERSARY CARDSOFT COLOURING PENCIL AND FINE LINER PENS This piece was designed as a card for my parents 25th Wedding Anniversary. The idea was to create a time-line of important moments in their lives together that would feed into each other, showing that although locations change the one consistent thing throughout life is each other. I enjoyed illustrating each square using references from stories they had told me and photographs they have kept, as well as hiding little Easter eggs that only our family would understand.

DANNY ELFMAN SPECIAL EDITION VINYL TRIO GRAPHIC DESIGN/BRANDING To celebrate the work of composer Danny Elfman, I designed a special edition set of three, 7” vinyl’s with tracks from his most recognisable scores. To match the tone of his music and the films they soundtrack, I wanted to create a minimalist-with-a-twist design. I used almost entirely black and white, with a splash of orange as reference to the composer’s iconic hair. The set contained a fold out booklet, containing information, lyrics and sheet music, and illustrations.

ABOUT ME I first started studying Visual Communication in 2018 at Nescol, where I completed my HND. Currently I am working on getting my degree and building on my knowledge and skills. I enjoy learning new techniques and methods to develop my designs and to create work that makes me happy. I am a design thinker and a very visual person who tries to find inspiration in everything. Solving problems using design is something that I love to do.

MY WORK FOCUS My main interests are graphic design, typography and illustration. The areas I love to work in are branding, packaging and advertising. Typically, I work digitally but I love to incorporate hand drawn illustration when I can to keep some traditional feel in my designs and to create an interesting contrast. Typography is something I am really interested in and I like using typefaces that are different and have a psychedelic feel to them. 60s and 70s design are some of my main influences, Wes Wilson was one of the first designers that inspired me.

FUTURE ROUTES My aim at the minute is to focus on finishing my degree and gaining design experience.

In the future my goal is to work at a design studio with clients and projects that interest me and excite me. I would also love to work as a freelancer. I’m excited to work with people and help them shape their brand identity to represent them and their mission visually. I want to help people’s businesses stand out from the crowd and showcase their individuality by creating a brand that is bold and unique.

VELVET I really enjoyed working on this brief as packaging design interests me a lot. The idea was to create a skincare and cosmetics brand that would appeal to 15-30year olds who wanted products that were fun but also gentle and effective. I went for a more minimal approach with touches of a subtle pattern that would be fitting for each product. This gives an idea of what it is at a glance whilst maintaining a softer look.

GYPSY JUICE The goal for this project was to create a brand identity for a craft beer company based in Aberdeenshire. I went for a fortune teller theme that will be noticed on a shelf. The varieties of beer are named after different tarot cards to keep the theme continuous. I went for a psychedelic style with the typography and pattern that emphasizes the magical feel of the company. I incorporated illustration into the design for a more personal feel and to add interest.

PENGUIN STUDENT DESIGN AWARD This project was for the Penguin Student Design Award, we were challenged to design a cover for one of three books. I chose A Short History of Nearly Everything as it caught my attention, and I had a lot of ideas for the cover. I went for a surrealist cover which shows a traveller being shown space, as that is where everything started. This represents how the reader will feel being brought back in time right to the beginning.

ABOUT ME I am an illustrator and graphic designer with education and experience from around the world. I have been drawing for all my life and use art as a tool to express my emotions.

I have a background in using traditional media, but at the moment I mostly use digital media.

MY WORK FOCUS I have always been inspired by nature, especially animals. I enjoy creating detailed illustrations for children and I want my work to inspire and educate future generations.

FUTURE ROUTES I have been a freelance artist for five years now, but I would like to try something different in the future and possibly work as part of a team in a creative studio. I would also like to publish a picture book.

TREE HOUSE This detailed illustration is a revision of drawings from my childhood. It depicts a thriving animal community living in a tree and it inspired a whole series of work which I would like to use in a colouring book in the future. It is the biggest of my ongoing personal projects.

CUSTOM DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS BOARD GAME MAP This map for the Dungeons and Dragons board game was commissioned by a friend. All of the included locations were made in collaboration with them and the map is still in use to this day.

VINYL COVER This vinyl cover was inspired by the first soundtrack from Finding Nemo motion picture. It was designed with the film’s visual and sounds in mind.

ABOUT ME I am a visual designer with a keen interest in typography, photography and graphic design.

I like to think out of the box and explore new challenges during a project.

MY WORK FOCUS I have gained much of my design inspiration through travel and cultural experiences. One of my favourite parts of any design project is the research - getting to know what makes the clients and their company tick and then incorporating that into the design or branding.

It is important to me that my work sparks emotion within people and conveys the right messages.

FUTURE ROUTES In the future I see myself putting my typography and graphics skills to good use within the industry, working for a well-established brand as their in-house designer, keeping branding up to date as well as campaigns and promotional items. I would also like to further my photography skills and take time to develop my own style, since this has taken a back seat while I focused on my love for graphics and typography. I also hope to have the resources and time to volunteer my skills to local business start-ups to help them grow and become their own brand.

CHARITY RE-BRAND I chose to design a re-brand for a charity close to my heart – Girl Guiding UK. I spoke to many members to find out exactly what they would see as their ideal logo, colours and promotional items. The outcome for this project was this beautiful, strong but feminine logo with a fun typeface and contrasting colours that work well together, suitable for the members aged 4-18 as well as the leaders and other adult volunteers. I know the girls will feel empowered by the charity and I wanted to show this with a strong logo.

HEALTH JUICE I enjoyed this project due to the openness of this eco-friendly brief; I focused my research in colour and type as I knew that the product spoke for itself. The idea is that the glass bottle could be reused/refilled time and time again. With the front label coming out to be a pocked sized recipe card with the ingredients to make the same drink. It was a short, simple but effective branding style.

PRODUCTION COMPANY - BRANDING PROJECT A branding project for a student in the film and television industry, I worked on a logo and simple website that they could use to promote their talent. The brief required minimal colour, but the client wanted to stand out against others in the field. Using an image of a husky to show independence and determination with a masculine typeface was a winner for the client.

ABOUT ME Hi! My name is Megan Couch and I am a graphic designer. I consider myself as a confident and highly motivated individual with a great variety of skills to offer, which include being able to work as part of a team as well as using my own initiative but also being hardworking and reliable. I have a creative and curious mind and I am always looking to try new skills and challenges. Building relationships with clients is something I pride myself on. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques as it allows me to develop my practical and digital skills.

MY WORK FOCUS I work in a wide range of mediums, from typography, illustration, branding and painting in traditional media such as acrylic and watercolour paint, which are all key elements within my practice. I focus mainly on branding and illustrations. By using these key elements, I try to create solutions that are engaging and meaningful as well as being memorable and appropriate.

FUTURE ROUTES Having graduated from university I intend to continue to develop my skills and working towards creating opportunities for the public to engage with my work within my local area. I would like to work on projects that are more technical like, digital typography and Photoshop skills. In the next five years, I want to have gained experience in leading projects for major clients. I am looking forward for my opportunities to expand my responsibilities within my role as a graphic designer.

ABERDEEN SCIENCE CENTRE CLIENT BRIEF I was asked to create a poster for the Aberdeen Science Centre to let their customers know that they would be moving premises while their current Centre is under refurbishment. I decided to include the planets in the poster because they are a big part of the Centre.

GFG AUTOS For my Advanced Graphic Design unit, I was asked to create my own brief.

I decided that I was going to do my brief on a car repair company. I chose to do this because having previously done research on this topic I found the majority of garages all have a similar style of advertising/logos and I wanted to challenge myself to create a more modern interpretation of this, which I feel I have achieved.

KATIECAKES PRESERVES CLIENT COMMISSION I was asked by the company KatieCakes Preserves to create a logo for her preserve company.

KatieCakes Preserves is a local company that’s based in Barthol Chapel, Aberdeenshire, which produces a wide range of jams, jellies, vinegars and chutneys. I decided that I was going to make the strawberries the focus point of this logo because the colour red tends to catch the eye of shoppers.

FUTURE ROUTES For the future I’d like to do freelance or working in a creative studio with other minds like myself. Building up connections and doing my best work in a great environment. I’m also considering doing a master’s and focusing on a speciality. I’m also seriously looking into Lecturing at College/University level and whether I can take that overseas.

FROTH This project was my first Graded unit from my HNC at college. I loved doing this project and I was awarded an ‘A’ for this work. We were asked to design a Brand Identity for a Coffee Shop going by the name of ‘Froth’. There was a restriction of only 2 colours for the logo and throughout the other deliverables. I decided to take a risk and make my own Typography for this project as I did not find any Typefaces that I had envisioned for my designs. I wanted this to be very sophisticated and with the colour restrictions.

SEVEN DEADLY SINS This project asked us to design for an upcoming BBC programme where every episode was a Sin. I choose the sins, ‘LUST’, ‘WRATH’, ‘SLOTH’ & ‘GREED’. My favourite out of the four was ‘LUST’ which is shown here. I researched a lot into colours and which best to suit the sins and used the eyes as the focal points. Was one of the first projects that I did at college that I was so proud of and loved producing.

GALLIANO’S My other graded unit for my HND was a packaging and Branding brief. We were asked to design the main logo and a logo designed for each individual flavour of our choice.

Here is the ‘Main Logo’ & the visuals for the ‘Ice-cream Lollies’ in each flavour. I might have changed some things but overall I loved this one and I also got to look up ice-cream for about three months.

ABOUT ME I am a student graphic designer with a keen interest in branding and visual identity. I also really enjoy user experience design and typography and would love to expand my skills and knowledge of this topic in the future. I love searching for new styles and techniques to experiment and combine with my own. I’ve always been a creative thinker, even from a young age so its super cool to be able to continue my creativity into adulthood.

MY WORK FOCUS The focus of my work tends to lean more into graphic design, but I do enjoy getting to experiment with different mediums now and again such as sketching and painting. I try to create work that’s inspired by what’s trendy but will also look just as interesting and unique later on down the line.

FUTURE ROUTES After graduating my goal is to get a job in a design studio in Glasgow or somewhere outside of the UK. This environment will help me strengthen my existing design skills and learn new ones, all whilst being surrounded with the same kind of creative thinkers. I would also like to explore art and its different mediums a little more in the future as well as I think it’s a great way to relax and de-stress.

FRIENDS OF THE FOREST Friends of the forest is an app proposal that aims to raise awareness about deforestation and the effects it has on our planet. The app informs you of what companies to avoid and how they contribute to deforestation, the wildlife that live in the forests, a forest tracker that keeps you up to date about the forests and an interactive game. The app also tries to actively combat deforestation as after every ten levels of the game completed, a tree will be planted in an area that’s been badly damaged.

OLIVER! For this project we were asked to create promotional material for a local production of Oliver!

The work had to be inspired by a designer from the 60’s, whilst staying true to the musical. The poster I created was inspired by Shigeo Fukada, a Japanese graphic and optical illusion artist who designed for social impact, rather than commercial. The poster features multiple different arms tangled up reaching into pockets to steal money, which is where it ties into Oliver! The colour palette is simple but effective and the 60’s style lettering adds a bit of fun to the design without it being too much.

THE BUMBLING HONEYBEE One of the projects we worked on in second year involved us creating our own brief, so I decided to create a company called the bumbling honeybee. It’s a luxury honey company that sources all of its honey ethically, with its target demographic being people who don’t mind spending that little bit extra on something that is ethically sourced. The deliverables include a logo, labels, a website and tote bags, with a colour palette of deep blue and gold used throughout as those colours represent royalty and luxury, which is what the brand is trying to represent.

ABOUT ME My name is Vera Bacuvcik. My love for art goes back a long way. As a student at Perth UHI, I’ve been able to experiment with various forms of visual communication and learned to incorporate digital media into my practice.

MY WORK FOCUS I like to challenge myself and experiment with different media, art techniques and styles, both traditional and digital. I am a world observer, and I will always translate world’s beauty and wonders into my work using either pencils, brushes, computer or camera.

My strength is to make connection and use knowledge and experience to come up with interesting ideas. As an artist I mostly work with traditional media such as ink, acrylics and watercolour. I am also enthusiastic about various social issues and digital medium is my go-tool to visually communicate them.

FUTURE ROUTES I still have one more year to enjoy my Student journey at UHI. I want to use this precious time to build my own art & design brand DaturaArtDesign. My dream is to create as a freelance artist in traditional and digital media.

AIR LARGE PRINT This is a digital painting called: Air. This image is the first piece of the series Four elements.

Every piece is dedicated to the one particular woman and “her” natural element (Air, Water, Fire, Earth). The idea is to celebrate women and their inner strength.

ABOUT ME I am a multi-disciplinary graphic designer who loves to create works that are not just visually appealing but also meaningful and stirs the emotions of people who gets curious about it. ¬My skills cover the areas of traditional and digital media which includes drawing, mixed media, graphic design, and vectorised illustrations. I like to make use of hot and cold colours to ensure my work will hook people’s interest at first sight. I draw my inspirations from retro posters, animations, 80s’ decade aesthetics and video games.

MY WORK FOCUS For the most part, I create my outputs by making use of vector graphics, which allows me to scale it to fit appropriately with any kinds of visual display i.e., billboards, web design, posters, t-shirts etc… solutions that bring connection and awareness. I also like to experiment by using cardboard models, rough sketches, and mock-ups to test out my solutions. What I am interested in, would be digital illustrations, more specifically, character art. I would want to work on creating a style that is unique to me.

FUTURE ROUTES Once I graduate college, my plans would be to get into an intern with a design studio to refine my skills further and experience new things doing so. I would look towards on improving my digital illustration skills to able to create amazing character art either for a game, comic, or just a fan-art. I am also interested in web design as it is in high demand and I think that it will complement well with what I have learned from Visual Communications.

A dream of mine would be to able to do work overseas e.g. Canada, and USA.

CLIMATE CHANGE AWARENESS POSTER As a warm-up to 3rd year Visual Communication course, I was assigned to tackle a quick brief about climate change about visualising climate change by using the facts provided by the Met Office. What I came up is a minimalistic poster that brings to attention regarding the decline of the Arctic ice extend in September. The poster depicts that the ice extent decline is comparable to an area larger than Scotland.

AN 80S’ NEON LANDSCAPE Inspired by the ‘synthwave’ aesthetic and ‘new wave’ songs that represents the eighties decade, I redesigned a vectorised landscape work that I created in my free time to appeal to my new found interest. Compared to my other works, this piece holds no meaning other than experimenting with colours, visual elements, and to engage my fascination with the wonders of that specific decade.

PERTH CITY PARKLETS ART In response to social distancing, there was a call to create designs works to be applied on outdoor parklets situated throughout Perth City Centre.

As quality of life is determined by the spaces occupied, I created several designs that could be applied to lighten up people’s mood in times of isolation. One of the designs was picked and painted onto a planter as shown on the image
