“Steel Innovation Center Serves as a Central Connecting Point in St. Louis, Interlinking its prominent landmarks.”

The senior year project was designed for the Steel Innovation Center competition by ACSA. The pominent goal of the project is to provide hands-on experiences for full-scale construction steel research, and my approach was to integrate environmental sustainability, social vitality, and industrial growth in St. Louis, focusing on the concept: of connectivity.

The site is located near the Mississippi Greenway in Missouri, and the project successfully transformed the abundant space into a pedestrian-friendly space. While focusing on the main program, the project also showcases the water purification system using the Mississippi River, along with key sustainable strategies like photovoltaic panels and water walls. This project stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of technical innovation, community engagement, and sustainable development, all while leveraging the unique built environment and heritage of St. Louis.

Spring 2023 ARCH 372 John Clark Albany Park, Chicago, IL Educational Group

“Celebration of a Rich Historical Heritages and Traditional Cuisines of Albany Park.”

The site is located on the Northwest side of Chicago: Albany Park. Albany Park is an enchanting area in Chicago that boasts a rich tapestry of diverse cultures and histories, stemming from the earliest European immigrants to the vibrancy of Jewish, Asian, and Latin American communities.

The presence of diverse cultural restaurants surrounding the site serves as inspiration for the creation of a kitchen tool library.

Rooted in the concept of “diversity,” the project’s core purpose is to craft a space where patrons can access and rent kitchen-related equipment. The building’s unique angular roof and contrasting facade set it apart from conventional boxy floor plans. The strategic placement of the roof allows for the creation of shadows that enhance the appeal of the courtyards on both sides of the main lobby, ensuring functionality and efficiency.

Melting Pot Mosaic: A Fusion of Cultures at Albany Park The portrait design for a kitchen tool library integrates the concept of “Fuision.” The artwork captures the rich historical value of the site. A collage of photographs from the diverse restaurants in the site sets a backdrop that speaks to the community’s heritage. The massings of surroundings were stacked non-hiearchically to form a fenceshape, symbolizing a unique community of Albany Park: fusion of diverse cultures and nations. To underscore the historical diversity, the artwork is infused with national colors of the countries that have contributed to the immigration waves in Albany Park: Sweden, Germany, South Korea, the Philippines, Mexico, Colombia, and Syria.

Oct 2022 ARCH 371 Isabella Hillman Greektown, Chicago, IL Educational Individual

“Indoor / Outdoor Performance Venue Embracing a Greek Spirit.”

West Loop Music Performance Hall is proposed for Greektown, Chicago. A proposal convergence of artistry and architectural splendor promises to captivate both performers and patrons alike. Embracing the timeless allure of Greek architecture, the design process weaves the surrounding contexts into its fabric. Drawing inspiration from the hues of Greece, a harmonious palette of identical national colors adorns the exterior features, while brick materials exquisitely nod to its urban surroundings.

The purpose of the project is to allow users to enjoy the performance in and out of the building. The Music Performance Hall embraces the vitality of the outdoors through an exposed panel and two entrances that open to both sides of the sidewalk. LED panels equipped in enclosed panels illuminate the venue’s value both day and night. This unparalleled space will welcome artistic expression and community engagement, establishing itself as an iconic cultural landmark in the Windy City.

DIAGRAMS

The diagram illustrates the form and program of the building. The arched shapes, inspired by Greek architecture, are applied in the windows and exterior walls. Varying the dimension of the arches within a human scale creates a visually pleasing play of light and shadow. Within the music hall, there is a deliberate arrangement of both public and private spaces. The public spaces are easily accessible, located on the lower levels of the building, and designed to accommodate a large number of users. On the other hand, the outdoor performing space, which offer an exclusive experience, are situated on the upper levels. Overall, the architectural design of the building demonstrates a thoughtful incorporation of arches to create an aesthetically pleasing form while effectively accommodating the diverse programmatic requirements of the music hall.

“A Meida Center that Embodies Three Unique Stories.”

Students were tasked to design a media center considering three unique character scenarios. Starting with a framework that includes three unique urban stories, the design proposes a space that serves as a foundation for social interaction among users, sharing diverse cultures, and fostering a sense of community.

The primary objective of this project is to clearly understand the importance of part-whole spatial relationships in an “urban” context, specifically containment of space, light, and movement.

SCENARIOS Summary of THE URBAN STORY ONE: Pat, an eccentric individual with a distinctive sense of style and a passion for the arts. Pat’s dramatic entrance at an art gallery and the Apollonian Society in high school highlight a deep appreciation for creativity and self-expression. The description of Pat’s fascination with a new media store emphasizes the joy and solace found within its well-designed and harmonious space. However, a curious encounter with a woman at the bookstore piques Pat’s interest. Overall, the passage explores the significance of artistic experiences, the allure of well-designed spaces, and the power of human connection in the realm of creativity and self-discovery.

Summary of THE URBAN STORY TWO: Sam is a student who is full of curiousity and strongly holds onto his beliefs. Sam’s morning is filled with frustrations, from being late for school to feeling uninterested in his classes. However, a visit to a bookstore during his lunch break brings him joy and a sense of belonging. He appreciates the unique characteristic and encounters a poet named Pat. Later, during a break, Sam reflects on the writings of Ernest Hemingway and finds solace in his own “clean, well-lit space.”

Summary of THE URBAN STORY THREE: Reneé, a lawyer and devoted mother, always takes the same route to work everyday. Her motto of order and organization shapes her life, while her synchronized encounters with passing trains and introspective conversations offer moments of solace. Despite the challenges posed by her husband’s sensitivities and the dominating “Kraft smell,” Reneé remains steadfast in her chosen office location and finds comfort in the resurgence of her urban community, particularly the Bookshop Gallery. Reluctantly buying books for her husband, she cherishes the peaceful haven the bookstore provides.

However, a newfound realization about the significance of her workplace prompts her to contemplate breaking her habitual path and considering a different route to work.

Fall 2021 ARCH 273 Andrea Melgarejo De Berry Downtown Champaign, IL Market (street) Individual

“COMMUNITY, ENVIRONMENT, AND ACCESSIBILITY.”

The designated site is located in Downtown Champaign, serving as a vital connection between Main Street and University Avenue. However, it has seen a decline in activity, with several shops closing down and reduced foot traffic.

Furthermore, there are only two trees in the entire block.

How can we revitalize these limited conditions into a vibrant space?

First propose was inspired from the name of the street: Market. Leveraging the rich agricultural heritage of Illinois, characterized by extensive farms and ranches, the project proposes a new community event: Farmer’s Market. The market will allow not only people to interact each other, but also enhance the economic condition of the community. The second solutioin is “greenery space.“ Placing green spaces on each side of the road will provide shades and walkable environment. Overall, the project will transform a dead street into a gathering space which embrace the community spirit, environment, and accessibility.

Boundless Haven Date Competition

Dodson, Oregon Residential Group (2)

“The Nomad’s Niche: a Self-sufficient Sanctuary harmonizing Mobility with Organic Rhythm Along the Columbia River.”

Applicants were tasked with conceptualizing a complete and functional dwelling unit on a small scale, with specific requirements. The design had to cover an area of 300 sq. ft, be entirely self-sufficient, and capable of accommodating two individuals as full-time inhabitants. The proposed tiny house would be situated in the picturesque vicinity of Columbia River, Dodson, Oregon.

Crucial aspects of the proposal were the mobility and water collection system. The dwelling’s mobility would allow it to adapt to various environmental conditions and cater to the preferences of its occupants. Whether it’s for relocating to different beautiful spots along the river or adjusting to seasonal changes, the mobility factor would enable an enriching experience of living in harmony with nature.

The location near the Columbia River offered an excellent opportunity to harness this valuable natural resource. By implementing innovative and eco-friendly techniques, rainwater and river water harvesting systems could be integrated into the design.

WATER COLLECTION Following arrows are showing how the roofs are slanted in the direction to collect the water. These slanted roofs are leading the water directly to near the restroom area in order to recycle the water from rain and use it for restroom service purpose to enhance sustainable design strategy

PORTABILITY 13 inch radius Wheel added in order to make the project transportable. 4 Lever Supports are added, 2 on each side to make structure stable. Those can be taken off when moving.

Height from the ground to entry level is 2 foot and 10 inch, height for each level of stair is 6”.

Due to the location of bedroom, strong sunlight is expected in the morning from South East without Shading Device.

Therefore, the design consideration with these angles were attached at exterior in order to provide better quality in bedroom experience for the user. Each angle was considered to diminish too dynamic light and accept weak light as much as possible that it is totally opened to West direction.

Generating from box, which is the form of efficiency.

02 Subtraction Subtracting for the purpose of lowering to human scale. In addition, decision was made to not make roof too high in order to control temperature.

Our design philosophy embraces the principle of biomimicry, and it is a commitment to a residential space where human creations and nature exist in mutual support and harmony. We aim to create structures that are not only aesthetically pleasing and functionally superior but also inherently sustainable and deeply connected to the natural world they inhabit.
