Colour drenching makes use of one colour in the space.

On trend

Bupila Lifestyle’s Pilani Bubu breaks down the top interior design trends to keep an eye out for this year

Round pieces soften a space.

With trends coming and going each year, it can sometimes be quite a challenge to decide what you like, what works for you and what you want to consider for your home. This year, it is all about personalisation. However, below are some standout trends you can incorporate in your home for a striking aesthetic –trends that can be personalised to create a home that truly reflects who you are.

BIOPHILIC DESIGN

As we have been seeing, the biophilic trend is here to stay. It takes its inspiration from organic materials like stone, clay, wood and sand to create calm, grounded spaces. Incorporating plants in the home is just one way to achieve this trend, but you can also choose patterns and textures that echo those we find in nature. Earthy colour palettes work great when using the biophilic trend in interior spaces.

Feeding into the biophilic trend, neutral and natural organic elements embrace the harmony of nature and modern design. Blend natural materials, calming neutrals and sustainable textiles with clean lines and minimal aesthetics. Here, a neutral colour palette sets the stage and backdrop and natural light also plays a huge role. Think sculptural forms and natural textures that will help create spaces that feel connected. Natural fabrics will add a touch of textural richness, and you can get the aesthetic right

by including floor-to-ceiling sheer drapery that bathes the space in a soft, natural light, further blurring the lines between inside and outside. Complete the look with eclectic accents such as rustic pottery. Warm wooden flooring grounds the space while textured walls add visual interest. Organic shapes and curves are evident in the sculptural vases and inviting seating noted within this trend – all of which create a sense of softness and comfort.

In biophilic design, earthy tones like rich browns, darker hues and plenty of wood are also considered. Layering is key to getting the look. Introduce chocolate brown in a few different elements such as armchairs and cabinets or accessories like throws and cushions. Balance this with lighter furniture – if using dark walls, opt for lighter furniture in shades of cream. The contrast keeps the room from feeling too heavy while allowing the dark colours to stand out as a dramatic feature. And add metallic accents for glamour and a lusher feel.

COLOUR DRENCHING

Far from a fleeting trend, and growing in popularity in recent years, colour drenching sees painting everything in the same shade – the walls, woodwork, ceilings and even radiators or furniture. Colour drenching is used to make a room feel bigger and lighter or cosy and inviting by creating a sense of infinity. It does come down to the colour you select though and, depending on what hue you choose, you can create rooms that are light and airy, dark and dramatic or calm and tranquil.

EMBRACING ORGANIC AND ROUNDED SHAPES

We have seen curved and rounded shapes entering the interior design world recently. The charm of this trend comes from the soft curves that result in a sense of calm and connection. With this trend, there is an innate harmony of mimicking nature where we see a celebration of materials used indoors as they would have appeared outdoors. The organic and rounded shapes trend promotes warmth and comfort and will be around for the foreseeable future.

WELLNESS SPACES – YOUR HOME AS THE SANCTUARY

Even though the pandemic is now a distant memory, more and more people are still looking at creating a home that serves as more than a place to live. Our needs, post-pandemic, have shifted drastically. We are now designing to suit holistic living with gyms, spas, meditation rooms, reading corners and more becoming integral in the design of our spaces.

SUSTAINABILITY AND SMART HOMES

Using sustainable materials, creating homes that consider the environment and even including smart or home automation

elements are no longer niches but necessities in today’s homes. Efficiency goes beyond environmental causes and also brings ease and function. Technology and smart systems are being embraced for their control, convenience, personalisation, safety and health benefits.

VINTAGE AND RETRO INTERIORS

A revival of vintage and retro interiors sees visual interest through small and large statement pieces. Add antique textures to the walls and let them pop and stand out. Bringing old, unique pieces into your home adds character instantly and is a hallmark of personalisation within your spaces. Upcycling lets you get creative while creating unique pieces that can be focal features.

Biophilic design brings the outdoors in.
Metallics add a touch of glamour.
Curves and organic shapes and materials will continue to grow.

From where do you draw your creativity? I draw my creativity from various sources. I research various design styles, from modern to vintage, to inspire new ideas and I create mood boards to visualise different aesthetics. I draw inspiration from nature’s colours, textures and patterns. I travel and experience different cultures to broaden my design perspective. I visit art galleries, museums and exhibitions to stimulate my creativity. I love to incorporate art pieces or cultural elements into my designs. I also like to try new design software or techniques to challenge myself. I experiment with bold patterns or unconventional materials and work with other designers or clients to exchange ideas and gain fresh perspectives. I host design workshops or join online forums to discuss ideas and trends and I follow design blogs, social media and industry publications to stay informed. I attend design events and conferences to network and learn. I take breaks to recharge and clear my mind, reflect on my design process and identify areas for improvement, and I listen to my clients’ needs and preferences to create tailored designs.

Living Inspired Interiors

Interior design studio specialising in curated interiors across South Africa

Living Inspired Interiors is a high-end interior design studio that specialises in all aspects of interiors, including full residential revamps and design solutions for the residential, commercial, business, retail and restaurant markets. The company has a footprint throughout South Africa and is celebrated for its meticulous attention to detail for every project it undertakes.

What interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? As an interior designer, I’m inspired by the 2025 trends that celebrate warmth, authenticity and cultural storytelling. This year, I’m leaning into earthy, retro colour palettes – mocha browns, olive greens and mustard yellows – that ground a space while feeling timeless. I love pairing these with natural materials like wood, stone, handwoven textiles and artisanal African craftwork to create interiors that feel soulful and connected to a place. Curved furniture is a must – it softens rooms and adds elegance – while layouts are shifting toward versatility with pockets of sanctuary, modular pieces and flexible zones for work and rest. Whether a home with smart, sustainable tech or a space that blends tradition with modern comfort, the goal is the same – design that supports wellbeing, tells a personal story and adapts beautifully to real life.

From where do you draw your creativity? My travels abroad across the globe. Attending the annual interior exhibitions in Milan, Salome del Mobile, from which I recently returned, and Maison & Objet in Paris.

Who is the one creative person who inspires you and why? There are so many local South African artists and creatives, and especially industry peers, who I admire and respect. However, I would like to mention two South African visionaries who deeply inspire me. They are Laduma Ngxokolo and Nelson Makamo. Laduma’s work with MAXHOSA is an extraordinary blend of heritage and innovation – he redefines tradition through bold pattern, colour and form, turning Xhosa symbolism into a global design language. His pieces aren’t just garments, they’re cultural expressions that radiate identity and pride – and that fearless storytelling constantly reminds me to design with purpose. Nelson, on the other hand, moves me with emotion. His portraits – especially of children – carry so much depth, vulnerability and hope. There’s a rawness in his work that speaks to the soul. I’ve always believed interiors should make people feel something and Nelson’s art does exactly that. Both creatives remind me that design is at its best when it’s personal, powerful and unapologetically authentic.

What is the best project you have worked on so far and why does it stand out?

What began as a small update quickly evolved into a fullscale residential renovation in Johannesburg. Originally intended to include just a few refreshed elements, the project unfolded into a complete transformation – from structural reworks and new extensions to a full interior overhaul. It was one of the most challenging projects I’ve taken on with every detail meticulously considered and curated. Despite the complexities, seeing the home come to life exactly as envisioned made the journey incredibly rewarding.

What is the best advice you have ever received? “Design the feeling first, then the space.” That reminder changed everything for me. It pushed me to think beyond beautiful finishes and focus on how a space should make someone feel – calm, inspired and empowered. When you start there, the design becomes much more meaningful.

What is the one thing you want clients to know when looking for an interior designer?

It’s not just about picking furniture or making things look pretty – it’s about trust. You’re inviting someone into your personal space, so choose a designer who listens deeply, understands your lifestyle and is willing to bring your story into the space. The best results always come from collaboration and connection. Q

Beautiful Spaces With Beulah

Johannesburg-based interior design and renovation firm offering in-house execution

What is the one thing you want clients to know when looking for an interior design company? Don’t just be financially ready to tackle a project; be emotionally and mentally prepared as well. Renovating or designing a home is a major undertaking involving many emotional ties and much decision-making.

From where do you draw your creativity? This can be summed up in one word: problem-solving. I don’t believe there is a single design problem that does not have a solution and I thrive on solving spatial challenges.

What is the best project you have worked on so far and why does it stand out? It has to be the modern farmhouse project we’ll be showcasing in SA Home Owner. It stands out because it’s my most authentic expression as a designer. It’s grand yet homely and juxtaposes soft curves against sharp, clean angles that draw your eye up as soon as you walk in. It’s a home that envelops you in warmth and calls for you to have a good time.

What interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? I am obsessed with the Pantone colour of the year – Mocha Mousse. I have already started exploring it in my current projects and am enjoying the balance of the rich yet delicate warm tone. It’s layered,

Beautiful Spaces with Beulah offers holistic interior services executed primarily by its in-house teams for seamless delivery. timeless and classy. There are also so many ways to incorporate it into one’s design that it feels like an unlimited colour. Q

Giava Interiors

Award-winning turnkey interior design studio that transforms everything from five-star lodges to luxury homes

VINETTE NICHOLLS OWNER, FOUNDER AND HEAD DESIGNER

Giava Interiors is an exclusive, full-service interior design studio catering to residential, hospitality, retail and corporate clients across sub-Saharan Africa. The company designs luxury spaces, manufactures custom furniture and handcrafts bespoke décor. Its award-winning team has transformed everything from five-star lodges and high-rise offices to luxury apartments and family homes.

What interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? At Giava Interiors, we’re excited about the continued rise of the “quiet luxury” trend. We believe true luxury whispers rather than shouts. It’s all about rich textures, layered patterns and quality pieces. As far as palette is concerned, we’re especially drawn to warm neutrals, deep olives and rich ochres paired with natural elements like fluted timber, brushed metals and statement stone. We also love the shift towards personalised spaces – interiors that truly reflect the home owner’s taste, lifestyle and personality. This allows us to create more custom pieces, bespoke furniture and tailor-made wallpaper, turning a beautiful home into a curated sanctuary. We are, however, not tied to trends. Timeless design is at the heart of everything we do. When you create layered, luxurious, elegant interiors, they will outlive trends and stand the test of time.

What is the best advice you have ever received? The best advice I’ve ever received is captured in one of my favourite Khalil Gibran quotes: “Work is love made visible.” It’s a simple truth that has shaped the way I approach both life and design. At Giava Interiors, we pour love, care and intention into every detail, ensuring each space feels authentic, beautiful and tailored to the client’s lifestyle.

What’s your favourite space in your home and why?

My bathroom, without a doubt. It’s spacious, calm and designed to be my sanctuary. The freestanding tub, the soft, natural light, the contemporary walls and the view of the lush greenery outside create a feeling of quiet luxury and escape. I filled the room with textures and tones that give me peace. It’s where I pause, breathe and reset. Every home needs a space that feels like that. Q

My client flew me out to their home so I could fully immerse myself in the space and understand their vision first-hand. From there, we travelled together to China to source and curate all the furniture and finishes. What made this project truly special wasn’t just the international scope; it was the opportunity to gain a broader perspective on design. Experiencing different cultures and aesthetics up close reminded me that great design is not just about how a space looks, but how it reflects a lifestyle and tells a story.

Who is the one creative person who inspires you and why? One creative person who really inspires me is Kelly Wearstler. I love how fearless and imaginative she is with her designs – there’s always a bold mix of texture, form and colour that somehow still feels harmonious. What is your favourite space in your home and why?

My favourite space in my home is definitely my bedroom. It’s the one place where I can completely unwind and just be myself. I’ve designed it to be calm, cosy and filled with textures and tones that make me feel grounded. It’s not just a place to sleep; it’s where I recharge, reflect and often find quiet moments of inspiration. It reminds me of the power of design to influence how we feel – that’s something I carry into every project I take on. Q

Who is the one creative person who inspires you and why? I have a business partner who is a silent investor, but plays a key role behind the scenes. He inspires me with fresh, creative ideas and brings a unique perspective that influences the direction of my design concepts.

WJENNIFER JONES HEAD DESIGNER AND OWNER

Jennifer Jones Interiors offers a full range of services including bespoke custom-designed and manufactured interiors and furnishing, and all interior planning and design, whether at the initial architectural stage or for renovation purposes.

hat interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? In the past 18 months, I have seen a move away from anything heavy or dark towards the use of lighter, warmer and softer tones in all the homes I am working on, regardless of the style of the interior. It’s a move towards creating calmer and more uplifting spaces. Bursts of happiness in the form of bright pops of colour and bold use of wall art add a sense of fun and playfulness to homes meant to be enjoyed.

What top three things do you love about South African interior design? I love that we have such beautiful seasons to accommodate – summer and winter – everywhere in South Africa, and each season adds different décor elements to a home. I love that we have beautiful light in this country and that our homes, on the whole, are designed to let that light in. And I love that in our dynamic culture, we have people from such different backgrounds to get to know and learn from and that these diversities play a role in how each interior is created, making each one unique and individual.

What is the best advice you have received? My grandfather and my father always encouraged us to consider the consequences of our actions. That applies to everything in life. In design – well every decision made has to be taken considering the consequences, doesn’t it? Q

Lavish Spaces is a world-class interior design hub specialising in high-end residential, commercial and retail design with a strong focus on delivering excellent client service. The company is committed to creating designs that are extremely high in quality.

What interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? There are a few trends I am excited about, including: the “Newstalgia” trend that blends high-end, modern furniture and paintings from emerging local artists with vintage furniture inspired by international travel, global trends and distinctive antiques found through thrifting; the use of warm earthy tones; vintage, Art Deco, retro and Art Nouveau; expanded kitchen functionality to include smart appliances and custom-expanded storage and avoiding temperamental materials that may be beautiful, but require a great deal of upkeep; and bathroom interior trends featuring eco-friendly inspired designs and the use of sustainable resources like concrete, stone, porcelain and glass, which are all becoming prevalent in modern interior design.

From where do you draw your creativity? Nature, travel and all things retro. I love the outdoors and there is so much inspiration to be drawn from simple things. Nature offers us a million colours, hues and tones.

What is the best advice you have ever received? “Less is more”. This allows for “out-of-the-box” creativity, involving tones, basic colours, lighting and warmth while maintaining modern stylish design and appeal. Q

hat interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? Sustainability in design is increasingly focused on accessibility, scalability and circular principles. Transparency, ethical sourcing and design for disassembly are key to making sustainability the norm.

LVN Interiors

Cape Town-based specialist in turnkey luxury homes and elevated e-design

ND Interior Solutions

LVN Interiors offers full turnkey solutions, spatial planning, styling and curated e-design services. Its signature style blends timeless elegance with modern living, delivering beautifully resolved interiors reflective of each client’s lifestyle while honouring form, function and fine details.

hat is the best project you have worked on so far and why does it stand out? Undoubtedly, my new home in Cape Town. I built my first home eight years ago in Johannesburg and loved every part of the process – so much so that I always knew I’d do it again. This time around, I’m pushing the boundaries a little more. Architecturally, the home leans towards a modern barn (Scandi-inspired), however, the interiors are a departure – I’m going for something that echoes a luxurious London townhouse or a Parisian apartment. Designing for myself has been equally liberating and challenging, but it’s liberated me to explore a bolder creative language.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Design with intention – every decision and every detail should serve both function and beauty. When in doubt, simplify. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

Who is the one creative person who inspires you and why? I am inspired by a multitude of creatives for different reasons. Some designers are masters of materiality, others have an eye for form, and then there are those who simply live life with such intentional style they make you want to elevate your own. The diversity of talent inspires me the most – the way people interpret beauty so differently keeps this industry alive and evolving. Q

WNICKY DREYER OWNER AND LEAD INTERIOR DESIGNER

From concept development to technical documentation and project execution, ND Interior Solutions handles every stage of the design process. The firm’s work is client-focused, rooted in practicality and emphasises function, flow and timeless design.

hat interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? I am excited to embrace bolder and more expressive design choices –from textured walls like microcement and hand-applied stucco to natural materials like warm woods and organic stone. I am also loving the shift towards personalisation – curating spaces that reflect the clients’ lifestyle rather than following a one-size-fitsall trend.

What is the best project you have worked on so far and why does it stand out? It’s hard to choose just one, but a home in Inanda from last year stands out. It was a three-level property including a gym, home office, bar – all the fun stuff! The clients made it a dream project and set clear boundaries, gave me creative freedom and, most importantly, trusted the process. Their openness allowed me to push the envelope and deliver a beautifully cohesive and personal home.

What is the one thing you want clients to know when looking for an interior designer? Understand what you are shopping for. There’s a difference between interior decorating and interior design – know what you need before approaching a professional. Interior designers play a much more technical and strategic role, and with the right brief and expectations, can completely transform your space. Q

hat is the one thing you want clients to know when looking for an interior designer? The more you trust your designer, the better the outcome. We don’t always know exactly what the solution is at the drop of a hat. Ideas need to mature, so if you don’t give your designer space and trust and instead push for a deadline and micromanage each step of the process, you will get a safe, generic product. I’m not saying no deadlines, no budget and all the freedom in the world, but rather trust the process and timelines presented. You hired someone to come up with a design that will impact your life, so trust that you made the right decision and give them the space and budget to do their job.

What top three things do you love about South African interior design? We have our own unique take on things. Design-wise, you can really do anything you want. There is so much room to grow and so much opportunity.

From where do you draw your creativity? I know it is probably old school but I like to be inspired by looking at interior design magazines and books. I can’t pass a book or magazine without stopping and flipping through it. I have piles of them!

What interior design trends are you looking forward to implementing this year? I’m loving the idea of working with natural and authentic elements that are truly luxurious. Q

rom where do you draw your creativity? I was fortunate to grow up in a creatively inspiring environment where my parents dedicated nearly every weekend to enhancing our home. They immersed themselves in designing spaces, sketching ideas and perusing countless interior design magazines, constantly evolving and perfecting the spaces we inhabited.

What is the one thing you want clients to know when looking for an interior designer? It is crucial to choose a designer who aligns with your taste and personality, someone you can trust to prioritise your best interests throughout the entire process.

What’s your favourite space in your home and why? My favourite space is our outdoor entertainment area, which we are currently designing and building. We love entertaining and sharing stories around a table with friends. Our current obsession is our Gozney Pizza oven that makes delicious pizza and around which we have designed the outdoor kitchen. From a design perspective, this space merges my love for design that soothes the spirit with my cultural roots, bringing in elements that remind me of the beauty and wonder of my childhood and my inspiring parents. hat is the best project you have worked on so far and why does it stand out? The first project I took on after returning from maternity leave really stands out for me. After a little break from interior design, I was bursting with creativity and eager to dive back in. I had so many ideas I wanted to bring to life in that project – ideas that weren’t limited by the challenges of living and working in the Eastern Cape. Unlike the bigger cities in South Africa, we don’t have access to a lot of suppliers, manufacturers, materials or retailers, but I was determined not to let that hold me or the design back. I’m incredibly proud of the home I created for my clients while juggling life with a newborn and a toddler.

From where do you draw your creativity? Travel always inspires me, whether close to home, elsewhere in South Africa or internationally. A change of environment always inspires and recharges my creativity.

What’s your favourite space in your home and why? I would say my kitchen! My favourite hobby is cooking, so it is very important for me to enjoy doing it in a space I love spending time in, both functionally and aesthetically. Q
