CELEBRATING WOMEN

Margaret Hirsch continues to inspire and empower women, whether in a professional or personal capacity, writes Trisha Harinath
Margaret Hirsch is celebrated for, among many things, her commitment to empowering women through various mentorship and entrepreneurial programmes, including the Margaret Hirsch Women in Business initiative. Her numerous accolades, including multiple Businesswoman of the Year awards, highlight her exceptional success and unwavering dedication to uplifting others in the business world.
How do you define leadership, and how has the definition evolved over your career?
Leadership is about helping others achieve their full potential and ensuring both they and the company reach the goals they have set. In the past, a leader would tell everyone what to do, but the modern approach is to allow individuals to find their own path, grow at their pace and focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses. Today, it’s about getting the team to work together, accepting responsibility for their actions, staying focused and resilient, and genuinely looking forward to coming to work every day.
What is the hardest lesson you have learned as a leader and how did it shape you?
The hardest lesson I’ve learned as a leader is not to take everyone at face value, but rather to look deeper into what they’re saying – and, more importantly, what they’re doing –to ensure they are genuine, honest and authentic. Trust, once broken, is never fully regained, so I take my time and ensure my inner circle is 100% trustworthy and lives by our three non-negotiables: honesty, integrity (doing what you say you will do) and loyalty.
Through the Women in Business Networking Clubs, you’ve empowered countless women entrepreneurs. What advice do you offer to women looking to start their businesses?
I always tell people to start right now, with what they have, where they are. There will never be a perfect time, perfect place
or perfect amount of money – so why not just start? I’ve done this with countless individuals and have had the pleasure of seeing them and their businesses grow from meagre beginnings into multimillion-rand successes.
Having earned an MBA at 70, what motivated you to pursue further education at this stage in your life?
I came from a family that never believed we were worthy of a good education. When I finished school, there was no money to send me to university. I completed matric on a Friday and started my first proper job on the Monday. I always wanted to study and knew I was capable, but one thing led to another, and it was only when I turned 60 that I began my tertiary education – starting with smaller courses like journalism and accounting, then progressing to a business degree, an honours degree, and ultimately my MBA. I did it for several reasons: firstly, for my own satisfaction; secondly, to help me run my business, which was growing beyond my wildest dreams; and thirdly, to prove to others that it’s never too late to do anything you want to do.
Coffee or tea – and how do you take it?
I am vegan, so I drink rooibos tea with oat milk – and definitely no sugar.
What’s one item on your desk you can’t live without?
The one item on my desk that I cannot live without is my laptop. I take it everywhere and work on it about 20 hours a day, seven days a week!
What’s your guilty pleasure after a long day?
A big glass of ice with a splash of dry rosé!
If your life were a movie, what would the title be?
“From Ordinary To Extraordinary” – which is actually the title of the book I’m writing about my life. Not only did I take my own life from ordinary to extraordinary, but I’ve also worked with so many women who came to me asking for a job – sometimes just to clean the floors – and now they’re managing and running those same shops!
Entrepreneur. Visionary. Philanthropist.
Jenna Clifford, who passed from cancer in May, was all of these; a true industry icon, says Lisa Witepski
The sadness at Jenna Clifford’s passing was not confined to her peers in the design field. Several celebrities and highprofile South Africans took to social media to express their grief, with businesswoman and former Miss South Africa Basetsana Khumalo calling her a “doyenne of craftsmanship” and actress Minnie Dlamini lamenting South Africa’s loss of a legend.
faces
These were not the only famous faces Clifford counted among her client base. Over the course of her lengthy career, she designed pieces for the likes of singer Celine Dion, as well as heads of state.
Her accomplishments are all the more impressive given that Clifford was not formally trained in the art of jewellery design. She entered the industry at age 19, shortly after the failure of her husband’s business required her to find a job. She may have had a humble start on the floor of H Urdang Manufacturing Jewellers, but by gaining insight into all areas of the business, she was able to launch her first enterprise, Gold Swing, selling factory-made pieces. Jenna Clifford Designs was founded just short of a decade later, with Clifford eager to answer the need she had perceived among clients for unique pieces marked by exquisite design and crafted with care from the finest materials.
“Clifford was a renowned activist for female empowerment and was appointed a torchbearer for the advancement of gender equality by the United Nations.”
Clifford’s creativity and dedication to excellence earned her a reputation not only as one of the leading players in her industry, but also as one of the country’s top entrepreneurs –evidenced by awards like the Renmeester/Rapport Award for South Africa’s Most Inspirational and Beautiful Woman and the CEO Top Woman in Business Award.
Her contribution to philanthropic causes is just as noteworthy: Clifford was a renowned activist for female empowerment and was appointed a torchbearer for the advancement of gender equality by the United Nations. She was equally committed to conservation efforts and fought against rhino poaching.
While Clifford’s death represents a significant loss, her life stands as a true inspiration.
From quality materials to timeless design, Alifurn offers handcrafted outdoor furniture that’s built to last and proudly made in South Africa.
What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? I love that I’m thriving in a traditionally maledominated industry. Building Alifurn from the ground up has been an empowering journey, not just for me, but for the women I’ve employed and mentored along the way. The fact that the majority of my team are women is something I’m deeply proud of. It’s proof that we belong in this space and that we can lead with strength, resilience and integrity.
How do you celebrate other women in the home décor and design industry? I believe in championing women publicly and privately, whether through collaborations, supplier
partnerships or social media features. I consciously seek out women-owned suppliers, designers and creatives to work with, and I always aim to create space for their voices and talents to shine.
What advice do you have for other women starting out in this industry?
Back yourself. Know that you belong at every table. Understand what’s happening in the industry and keep an eye on your competitors, but don’t get distracted by what others are doing. Stay focused on your values and strengths. Over the years, I’ve seen many businesses come in hot, make a splash and then disappear because they lacked consistency and staying power. Play the long game. Do what you do well and stay true to that.
A woman to me is … powerfully multidimensional; strong, intuitive and capable of holding complexity with grace. She is both anchor and wave.

What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? I enjoy working in an industry where I’m surrounded by many talented and hardworking women. It is rewarding to collaborate with them every day in a creative environment where women support each other and contribute to strong ideas and results. My aunt, Carrol Boyes, was passionate about nurturing
people and helping them grow in the industry and thanks to her, I now get to work alongside many of those individuals she helped shape.
What are some of the highlights that you have experienced so far? Some of the highlights for me have been working alongside women who built their careers with Carrol over the years. I also think of my aunt Carrol, who nurtured and empowered so many women in business. Their examples have taught me that being a woman means lifting others while staying grounded in who you are.

What are some of the highlights that you have experienced so far? There have been so many special moments, from seeing my designs published to building lasting relationships with clients. But, honestly, the biggest highlight is always that final reveal, when a client walks into their finished space and it just feels right. That feeling never gets old.
As a woman, what do you bring that is unique to the industry? I bring a thoughtful, layered approach, balancing function, comfort and elegance. I think women have a natural ability to understand how a space should feel as much as how it should look. It’s about creating something that works for real life while still feeling elevated.

High-end curated interiors where meticulous attention to detail stands out
TANYA SOLOMON OWNER
Living Inspired Interiors is a high-end interior design studio specialising in all aspects of interiors, including full residential revamps and design solutions for the residential, commercial, business, retail and restaurant markets.
As a woman, what do you bring that is unique to the industry? A nurturing perspective that sees beyond trends. For me, interiors are not just about how things look – they’re about how spaces feel. I approach each project with heart, intuition and an ability to listen deeply to what a space and its inhabitants need. I believe women bring gentleness, resilience and an innate sense of harmony to design.
How do you celebrate other women in the home décor and design industry? I celebrate other women by creating opportunities for collaboration, visibility and support. Whether showcasing female artists and makers in my projects, hosting curated events or simply amplifying their work on social media platforms – I believe in building a community that lifts as it rises. There’s room for all of us, and together, we are stronger.
How do you celebrate yourself? I celebrate myself by honouring rest, creativity and joy. I allow myself to pause and appreciate how far I’ve come. LISA SWART CEO
Oksijen offers a turnkey service for residential and hospitality projects with design packages tailored to address each project and client’s specific needs. Its team of highly talented designers, specialist craftsmen, artisans and suppliers bring uniquely individual spaces to life.
What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? I love project-based work. As a woman, I have a different approach to managing and co-ordinating the multiple stakeholders. I have a very good grasp on juggling personalities and managing all the different moving parts across multiple projects at the same time.
What are some of the highlights that you have experienced so far? Restoring a house that was on the verge of falling apart. Bringing her back to life – preserving her beautiful, historical
features while making her energy-efficient and welcoming again – was truly rewarding. And, honestly, nothing beats walking into a home I designed years ago and seeing people thrive in the space I created for them. That feeling of knowing I’ve made a real difference – that’s priceless.
As a woman what do you bring that is unique to the industry? Contrary to what many might think, interior designers spend a lot of time on construction sites, often alongside predominantly male crews, rather than just in fancy showrooms or behind computer screens. What sets us apart is our collaborative spirit, empathy and emotional intelligence. We bring teams together, align everyone towards a shared vision and weave different perspectives into a holistic solution. That’s the power of a woman’s touch on-site.
How do you celebrate yourself? By not waiting for or expecting validation from others, but acknowledging my achievements myself. Also, by feeling proud of accomplishing what I set out to do, be it small and easy or something that was a struggle and took a lot of self-motivation to get done.
A woman to me is … anything she wants to be.

How do you celebrate yourself? Celebrating yourself, for me, involves acknowledging and appreciating my accomplishments, strengths and wellbeing. I always try to learn new things. I do yoga every day, enjoy spending time with my family and my dogs. Headquartered in Witbank, Mpumalanga, Signature Room proudly extends its services across South Africa and throughout the African continent.
What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? Being a woman in the interior design industry is one of the most fulfilling roles I have. All the projects I work on get a special anointed feminine touch – that’s what makes this industry such a therapeutic, creative outlet for me in many ways. I have built so many strong relationships with other women in this industry, some of whom were my clients and have now become my friends.
How do you celebrate other women in the home décor and design industry? I am such a big fan of women who are making
significant strides in this industry, especially those emerging from the technical side of the industry. LARA FOURIE CO-FOUNDER AND LEAD DESIGNER
The Goodspace’s concept-tocreation design process is tailored to individual needs. The company dedicates time over a few weeks to creatively conceptualise, research and professionally present ideas for your space.
What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? I love that we are challenged every day, creatively and in a business sense. The business world has for a long time “belonged” predominantly to men and we are privileged to have the opportunity to be creative and in business at the same time.
What are some of the highlights you have experienced so far? All my memorable highlights are my clients’ faces when they see the completed product at the end of a very long journey, but if I must choose something tangible, it would be that three of my property features in SA Home Owner magazine have made the front cover.
How do you celebrate other women in the home décor and design industry? By celebrating their accomplishments with them. Many of the suppliers I use are woman-owned businesses and we queens stick together and fix each other’s crowns when needed.
What advice do you have for other women starting out in this industry? Never doubt yourself, and if you do, only do so for about five minutes then move on with whatever you are attempting to achieve.
A woman to me is … resilient, brave, emotional, strong-willed and dynamic. They are masters at multitasking and phenomenal at creating balance.
Interior design company o ering creative, curated and complete solutions
Urban Blend Interiors offers a turnkey interior design service, managing everything from design concept, sourcing and installations to delivering fully furnished, functional and stylish spaces tailored to your lifestyle.
How do you celebrate other women in the home décor and design industry? I created a blog series called “Melanin Magic”, dedicated to fostering collaboration and celebration of (specifically) black women in the home décor and design industry. It featured incredible women working in mixedmedium art, bohemian interiors, biophilic design and sustainable home décor. We explored their stories, what inspired them and showcased their beautiful, often under-represented, work. It was all about celebrating creativity, collaboration and sisterhood.
What advice do you have for other women starting out in this industry? Find someone whose work inspires you, especially someone working in the style or niche you’re drawn to. Reach out, ask questions, soak up as much as you can. Then take that knowledge and refine your vision. Most importantly, put your work out there. It doesn’t need to be a grand project – start with a room you helped design for a family member, something from your studies or a passion project you styled just for fun. People need to see your aesthetic to connect with it. Don’t wait for perfection, start with what you have and grow from there.
How do you celebrate yourself? I am a big reader so I like to recharge and celebrate myself with alone time. This generally includes escaping into a book or spending time journalling at a coffee shop. Sometimes it’s a full pamper day! Other times, it’s a digital detox, a few days off the grid, just reconnecting with myself.
A woman to me is … whoever she chooses to be. Bold, soft, fierce, gentle or all of the above, on her terms.

What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? I love that, as a woman and a mosaic artist, I can tap into my feminine intuition when it comes to conversations with clients about turning their design dreams into reality. This happens through a beautiful process of conversation and taking cues, while sharing my creative experience and ideas. It’s a delicate balance and I believe that, as women, we are gifted with this ability and insight. I also love how women are being celebrated in art and that it is a space that is growing with so much feminine energy, bringing gentle beauty and flow back into design spaces – a softer and more organic feel.
What advice do you have for other women starting out in this industry? Try and fail and try again. Believe in yourself, be fearless in the pursuit of externalising your creativity. Share your beauty and be brave. You are worth it.

How do you celebrate yourself? A good spa day is never far, especially after a project.
What advice do you have for other women starting out in this industry? Don’t be afraid to be bad at something when starting out. Experience will sharpen your skills but be okay with fumbling a little bit in the beginning. It’s school fees.

As a woman, what do you bring that is unique to the industry? I bring a layered sensitivity to how people live – the nuances of flow, light, texture and function. FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR
Wolkberg Casting Studios is a multidisciplinary industrial design and manufacturing company that takes innovation seriously. Wolkberg has innovated in material science and created a new technology called Limesite. Limesite is concrete refined.
What do you love about being a woman in your specific industry? I love knowing that I’m probably one in a million. It reminds me that I’m strong, resilient and full of grit. I’m proud that young women can look at someone like me and feel confident that they too can run a successful manufacturing business –because they’ve seen that it’s possible. Growing up, I didn’t have many examples of women doing this kind of work, so being able to be that for someone else now feels incredibly meaningful.
What are some of the highlights that you have experienced so far? There are a few, thankfully. Becoming the 100% shareholder of a leading South African design and manufacturing company is a huge one. Taking my product across the globe is another. I built a major brand from scratch – with no funding, just an iPhone, an idea and a lot of determination. I’m also incredibly proud that our senior management team remains entirely female-led. I don’t know what makes me prouder – how we started or how we’ve stayed true to who we are.
A woman to me is … love. Love is strong, bold and brave, and so are we as women.

When women come together they change the world. And, the women in the home décor, design and building industry are definitely leaving their mark in this space. In honour of these inspiring and empowered women, SA Home Owner recently held a brunch at the Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa. Hosted by Pilani Bubu, the event was a heartfelt experience where designers, decorators and home-product business owners shared their stories and came together to celebrate one another. Tears were shed, plenty of laughs were had, but, most importantly, this was an event where women’s empowerment could be felt.
“This event was amazing in so many ways, but a highlight was bearing witness to how these incredible women support each other, back each other and cheer one another on. It was truly a phenomenal morning,” says Candice Jin, marketing and circulations manager at SA Home Owner.
