MESSAGEFROMTHEBOARD

Congratulations, to the three candidates that have just been elected or re-elected to the SCSCAI Board of Directors. We have a busy 2025 calendar year in front of us, which will begin with our Budget Review sessions for FY2026 scheduled for the last two weeks of March.

As of this writing (2/5/2025) the proposed NORA Amendment is still unresolved. This means that it has neither passed nor failed. As many of you will recall the amendment is 406 votes short of passing and nearly 1200 votes short of failing. 81.1% of the votes cast were in favor of the amendment.

As such at a Board meeting conducted on 12/20/24 a motion was passed by the Board that due to the NORA amendment sitting in an unresolved state, that the Board would seek legal counsel’s advice to determine the best way to proceed. Based on review of all of our documentation and the overwhelming support of those that voted on the amendment, legal counsel has suggested that we petition the Court to issue an order enacting the proposed amendment. This petition will be heard by the Court in late March.

The Budget Hearings for FY2026 will be held during the last two weeks of March in Conference Room 5 at Desert Vista. The Reserve Budget will be reviewed first, followed by New Capital and closing with Operations. We will be contributing a large portion of the FY2026 budget towards the Reserve while still maintaining an Operations Budget that when combined with Reserve will allow us to continue to maintain all amenities, assets and equipment in excellent condition. As such there will be no New Capital added in the FY2026 budget. This fulfills the Board’s primary fiduciary responsibility which is to drive and/or increase property values.

It is important that we all focus on the last sentence in the preceding paragraph. It is unfortunate but previous Executive Directors and past Boards have felt that their primary fiduciary responsibility was to hold the owner’s annual assessments at a minimum. This occurred often prior to 2018, and it resulted in flat property values and a community that looked old, tired and in need of repair and upgrades.

Fortunately, in the past eight years we have a new Executive Director and the owners have elected Board members that realize the importance of presenting a wellmaintained community with a wide variety of amenities to offer at a very reasonable rate which has not only promoted property values, but has our community consistently ranked in the top three (in some rankings number one) in the nation, for active adult age restricted communities.

We as a community are fortunate to have a very capable Executive Director and administrative staff. They are all fairly compensated, and in fact you may state that we are getting a bargain. These eleven (11) individuals combined cost each homeowner approximately 46 cents a day.

The Board consistently looks for ways to reduce expenses and to ensure that our headcount (payroll) is proper. We will not, however, reduce our Operating expense and/or headcount in a manner that would cause us to defer maintenance, or replace assets and equipment required to maintain all that we have in excellent condition.

We believe that the community at large appreciates and deserves a community that appears vibrant and is very well maintained and well deserving of its very high national ranking.

You Never Know “As I See It . . . ”

There have been times when I made a special effort to do something – drive a long distance to help someone out, or make a relatively small donation to a huge charity, or labor over a column for the LINK so that it is just the way I wanted – and then wondered “does it really matter” or “was it really worth it”? Life is really about choices, and are our choices “worth it” or do they “matter”. Sometimes we know the answers to those questions, but most often I think we do not, and will never, know the answers. Sometimes we just “do the right thing”, the things that make us feel good and happy with ourselves, and trust the universe with the rest. That brought me to the following story I read some time ago.

When the job was done, she asked how much she owed him for his help. Bryan smiled. He said: “If you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who needs help, give that person the needed assistance. And think of me “.

At the same evening, the lady stopped by a small cafe. That place looked dingy. Then she saw a waitress, nearly eight months pregnant, wiping her wet hair with a towel. The waitress had a sweet friendly smile, although she had spent on her feet the whole day.

The lady wondered how someone, who has so little, can be so kind and giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.

The lady had finished her meal and paid with a hundred-dollar bill. The waitress went to get change and when she came back the lady was gone. She left a note on the napkin: “You don‘t own me anything. Somebody once helped me, just like now I‘m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, do not let this chain of love end with you “. The waitress found four more one hundred bills under the napkin.

That night the waitress came home earlier. She was thinking about the lady and the money she left. She was wondering how the lady could know how much she and her husband needed it, especially now, when the baby will soon arrive. She knew that her husband worried about that, so she was glad to tell him good news. Then she kissed him and whispered “Now everything will be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson “.

A man was driving his car, when he saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road. He saw that she needed help. So he stopped his Pontiac near her Mercedes and got out.

He smiled while he was approaching her, still she was worried as nobody had stopped for hours. Moreover, he did not look safe, as his appearance was so poor and shabby. He could see how frightened she was, so he tried to calm her: “I‘m here to help you, don‘t worry. My name is Bryan Anderson “.

The tire was flat, so he had to crawl under the car. While changing the tire, he got dirty and his hands were hurt.

So, sometimes the outcomes of the very best things we do in life, are those we will never see or know about. Our actions are like ripples in the sea – we drop a pebble in the water and see it drop, yet we know the ripples will go out to destinations we will never know. We will never know where those ripples will go nor upon whom the waves will touch. Perhaps they will just be beautiful, or perhaps brighten someone’s day, or perhaps even they will save a life. We will never know . . . we will only know that it was our action that started the ripples.

FITNESS

March 2025

These all provide the electrolytes and minerals your body needs. Although sports drinks, tablets and powders can help replenish electrolytes, be cautious. These products are often very high in sugar and caffeine. You can become dizzy, lightheaded or get muscle cramps post-workout if electrolytes are not replenished

Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates. You burn a lot of carbohydrates— the main fuel for your muscles — when you exercise. In the 30-60 minutes after your workout, your muscles can store carbohydrates and protein as energy and help in recovery.

Food as Fuel Before, During and After Workouts

Your body is your vehicle, so you have to keep your engine running when you work out. That means fueling your body by eating nutritious foods and staying hydrated.

Before: Fuel up!

Not fueling up before you work out is like driving a car on empty. You also may not have enough energy to maximize your workout, and you may limit your ability to burn calories. Ideally, fuel up two hours before you exercise by:

Ÿ Hydrating with water.

Ÿ Eating healthy carbohydrates, such as whole-grain cereals (with low-fat or fat-free milk), whole-wheat toast, low-fat or fat-free yogurt, whole-grain pasta, brown rice and fruits and vegetables.

If you only have 5-10 minutes before you exercise, eat a piece of fresh fruit, such as an apple or banana. The key is to eat easily digested carbohydrates, so you don’t feel sluggish.

During: Make a pit stop.

Keep your body hydrated with small, frequent sips of water. You don’t need to eat during a workout that’s an hour or less. But, for longer, high-intensity vigorous workouts, you should eat 30 to 90 grams of carbohydrates every hour, such as lowfat yogurt, raisins or a banana.

After: Refuel your tank.

After your workout, refuel your meal with:

Fluids. Drink water, of course. If you want to add more flavor, try adding lemon, lime or cucumber slices to your water. Blend your water with 100% fruit juice, such as orange juice, which provides hydration and carbohydrates.

Electrolytes. Replenish electrolytes through food sources such as fruits, leafy green vegetables, fatty fish, low-fat dairy products, nuts and seeds.

Protein. Eat foods that are healthy sources of protein such, as skinless chicken breast, salmon, trout, lean or low-fat ground beef or pork. Some vegetarian healthy sources of protein include beans, peas, lentils, nuts and seeds. Protein is needed to help repair and grow muscles.

Healthy fats. Consume foods that are high in unsaturated fats including avocado, fatty fish, such as tuna, salmon or sardines, or nuts. Use non-tropical vegetable oils, such as canola or sunflower oil, when cooking instead of solid fats such as butter, coconut butter or oil. The body stores these healthy fats which increases the availability of energy during endurance exercise.

It’s important to realize that these are general guidelines. We have different digestive systems, and a lot depends on what kind of workout you’re doing.

Do what works best for you. Know that what you put in your body (nutrition) is as important as what you do with your body (exercise). Both are crucial to keeping your engine performing at its best.

March 17th – “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling...”

The “Luck of the Irish” is not all it seems with visions of leprechauns only found in our dreams. Being Irish myself, with a strong DNA, and it shows in my ‘blarney’ as some people might say. The famed four-leaf clover could be just in our minds, but I scour through the grasses in the hopes that I find that elusive green ‘charm’ to bring luck just the same and I’m constantly searching through every golf game. Could you have Irish Banshees in your own family tree –well, just give it some thought, and “ye know who they be...” The shamrocks adorn everywhere all around, and are posted in every bar to be foundThe Irish are known for a ‘nip’ on occasion, and on March 17th – matters not your persuasion be ye Irish or not, folks are “wearin’ the green”. We’re ALL a tad Irish or so it may seem. We’ll look for a rainbow in the hopes stories told are more than just fables and there ARE pots of gold. From smooth Irish Whiskey to drinking green beer the echoes of “Erin Go Bragh” is the cheer. You need not be from Ireland to speak with a ‘brogue’, but some will still try as the accent goes rogue. There’s corned beef and cabbage with potatoes, indeed –and we’ll tell Irish jokes – well, it’s what we all need for the Irish are hardy – and have learned through the years, a good sense of humor can help ebb the tears. Through chaos and famine, we’ve survived ‘spite it all. So, we take a deep breath, and with pride, we stand tall! And on March 17th – where you’re from no one cares –‘tis a day for a party that we all seem to share. . . . then softly we hear ”Danny Boy” start to play and it’s somehow so fitting to end such a day.

Janet was raised in upstate NY in a town called Watertown (known as: “the snowbelt” near the Canadian border). She is the oldest of five siblings. Janet lived in Watertown for 18 years. Following high school, Janet won a New York State scholarship and went to college in California. She was in the first Paralegal class to graduate from the University of California at Irvine. Janet worked as a paralegal for 30+ years. She ran the IT Department for a large law firm for a few years. Janet met the love of her life in 1979 and has a blended family with six children.

Janet resided in California for many years. She and her husband Fred lived in an RV for 16+ years. During that time, they lived in Newport Beach, CA and then in Tustin, CA. Janet and her husband traveled all over the U.S. in their RV and visited their six children. In 2017, Janet told her husband: “I need to get out of CA. Where do you want to live?”

Janet and Fred had family here before moving to Las Vegas. Their niece worked as Director of Nursing for Mountain View and their nephew worked as a helicopter paramedic. Sun City Summerlin had the strongest pull for Janet and her husband. They had seen Sun City Summerlin before, when it was first being developed. Janet and her husband came out here again in late March 2017, toured the community, bought a home and 29 days later, moved in. “It was meant to be. Retirement is all about the people, not the place,” says Janet. Fred and Janet were married for 43 years until his passing two and a half years ago.

No sooner did they settle into the community when they joined SCS Patrol. “It was our date night.” Her husband was Treasurer for two years, then Janet became Treasurer. Janet wears many “hats” in SCS Patrol: Watch Commander, Driver, Dispatcher, Recruiter and, Assistant Pet Officer. She has been with SCS Patrol for eight years this October. “The members of SCS Patrol are like family.”

For the last four years, Janet has been the Vice President of her sub-association (84 homes).

She is a member of the Social Club. Janet and her husband (eight years ago in August) helped start the Texas Hold’em game on Thursday nights. Initially, there were just 12 members. Now, they are up to almost 50 members!

Janet has a daughter here in Las Vegas. Her granddaughter will graduate from high school this year (from Palo HS). Janet has nine grandchildren: ages 17 to 31. Every Sunday, her blended family “group text” each other! “Our blended family is stronger than ever!”

Janet also works with CERT (the Community Emergency

Response Team, a Southern NV CERT 3-V Program managed by FEMA). She has taken the first five courses. Janet may be called on to assist those affected by natural disasters.

Janet is a member of NPT (Neighborhood Preparedness Team) and Neighborhood Watch.

Janet is also involved in the Computer Club as a Director.

“Get out and volunteer!” All the organizations can use volunteers. But, if you want to get to know our community and understand it, Janet highly recommends joining SCS Patrol.

Janet nominates Dorothy Macchio for the next Honoring Residents Corner.

LET’S ALL TRY THE SWEDISH DEATH CLEANING!

When I first saw the title of this cleaning method it sounded so morbid, but the Swedish Death Cleaning method is rapidly gaining popularity around the world.

A cleaning tradition in Sweden, aptly named Swedish Death Cleaning, differs from the usual decluttering methods because it not only emphasizes physical tidiness, but also takes into account the emotional and spiritual well-being of the individual. Psychologists agree that a cluttered environment can make for a cluttered mind, and clutter is a significant factor in creating stress. Going through one’s belongings is a trip through fond memories and can be emotionally fulfilling to gift meaningful items to friends or relatives now while receiving the benefit of joy from gifts we give. Letting go can be liberating.

Apart from paring down and living a simpler and less materialistic life, the Swedish Death Cleaning is a deep dive into leaving this world, when the time comes, with affairs in order and in doing so greatly relieving the emotional burden those we leave behind. No loved one wants to face what feels like an insurmountable mess of paperwork and possessions left from someone else’s life.

AARP Magazine ran a fantastic article on a woman chosen to be the Executrix of her mother’s estate. Because there seemed to be proper documents such as a trust, power of attorney, health care power of attorney, etc., the daughter felt discharging her duties would be easy, but it has taken her over two years to clean up what at first looked to be a tidy situation. She mentions the Swedish Death Cleaning method, and I’m summarizing what she found out the hard way. Taking heed of some of the problems she encountered, you could save your loved ones a lot of heartache. Her suggestions:

Ÿ Have your funeral expenses prepaid or at least a joint bank account so that loved ones can access immediate funds for necessities that can’t wait for the legal process.

Ÿ Estate bills have to be paid upfront, which means the relative in charge has to pay these bills with their own money, be it tax bills, credit cards, utilities, etc., until the will/trust can be legally processed. Again, a joint account would have taken

care of the financial burden.

Ÿ Another suggestion offered was to have things like utilities in both the names of the deceased and the relative managing the affairs. The woman in the interview said that no company would talk to her over the phone; that in order to close the accounts she had to personally appear with a death certificate or have a notarized letter with the death certificate. As an example, the daughter said it took weeks to close her mom’s cell phone account.

Ÿ A copy of the list of usernames, passwords and phone passcodes kept in a safe place for the Executor to use when the time comes would be a godsend.

Ÿ Her mom had directly held stocks and the suggestion here was to perhaps put the stocks in a brokerage account or use a “transfer on death” (TOD) designation to make it easier for the remaining relative to take care of.

Ÿ Her mother also owned land in another state that was bought for a second home, but the house was never built. Her strong suggestion here was if you own real estate such as this, to sell it while you are alive.

Of course, there are several other areas where the Swedish Death Cleaning method could be applied. Some, for example, might be email management, unsubscribing from emails you no longer are interested in, file organization, tossing old files that are not needed, social media clean-up, unfriending from sites that no longer interest you, device management and updating and deleting apps that aren’t needed.

The advice is the same as decluttering – start small. Spring begins this year on Thursday, March 20th – what a good time to start working on your own Swedish Death Cleaning, you’d be amazed at how good you will feel!

“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.” ~ Marie Kondo

Preparing for Spring

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to refresh your yard and outdoor spaces. As temperatures warm up, weeds and yard waste can quickly become a challenge. In Sun City Summerlin’s desert climate, early maintenance is key to preventing weed overgrowth and ensuring compliance with community landscaping standards.

Weed Prevention & Yard Maintenance

Now is the time to take preventative action. Apply preemergent weed control now to stop weeds before they start. Sun City Summerlin prohibits excessive weed growth, as outlined in our Development Standards.

Regular trimming of shrubs and bushes prevents them from becoming overgrown and encroaching on sidewalks and neighboring properties. Proper maintenance helps maintain aesthetic appeal and property values.

Yard Cleanup & Waste Disposal

Equally important is yard cleanup. Winter may have left behind dead leaves, branches and landscape debris that need to be

cleared to maintain a tidy appearance.

Maintaining a clean, attractive yard enhances curb appeal and property values while ensuring compliance with Sun City Summerlin’s landscaping guidelines. For landscaping standards or compliance questions, contact the Community Standards Office at (702) 966-1411 or CommunityStandards@suncitylv.com. Let’s keep Sun City Summerlin looking its best!

SUNCITYSUMMERLINPATROL

SCS Patrol Elects New Board for 2025

The Sun City Summerlin (SCS) Patrol has had a change in its leadership for 2025.

That’s all part of the process to keep the SCS Patrol moving forward and allowing individuals to move up the ladder to become part of the leadership team.

Steve Douglass, who held the position of Chief for the past two years, elected not to run. An election was held and Terry Carey, who was Assistant Chief, was voted in. There is also a change in the entire SCS Patrol Board because the previous members stepped down or moved up the ladder.

The remainder of the SCS Patrol board includes Dee O’Dowd as Assistant Chief, Cindy Scott as Secretary, Lynn Hatcher as Treasurer and Ann Mueller as Personnel Officer.

“I’ve only been Chief for a short time so I’m not sure what the future holds, but my position as Assistant Chief gave me some knowledge as to what to expect,” Carey said. “I hope I can lead the SCS Patrol by example.”

Carey has been a member of the SCS Patrol since 2018, holding numerous positions including Head of Training and the Recruiting Team. She has been the Driver Scheduler since 2019 and is a Driver Trainer when needed.

“The SCS Patrol is made up of dedicated volunteers who help behind the scenes in so many ways,” Carey said. “As Chief, I hope to use the talents of all officers to reach out to all of our residents to enlist more members and advance ways to help our neighbors.”

O’Dowd joined SCS Patrol in November of 2021 and has been a Driver and Dispatcher, worked at the Information Centers and is a Watch Commander. She served as Assistant Personnel Officer and Personnel Officer before assuming the Assistant Chief position. O’Dowd is also active in the community serving as Vice President of Membership for the Sun City Summerlin Social Club and is a member of the Mah Jongg Club, Gardening Club and Dance Connection.

Scott had worked at the Information Centers and been a Dispatcher since joining the SCS Patrol in July of 2023.

Hatcher, who joined the SCS Patrol in January of 2018, has been a Driver, Dispatcher and Watch Commander.

Mueller, a resident of Sun City Summerlin since October of 2021, joined the SCS Patrol in March of 2022. She is a Driver, a Dispatcher and served as Assistant Personnel Officer. She is also active in the community as President of the Silvertones and belongs to the Sunshine Service Club, Rainbow Club, Classical Music Club and Travel Club and also serves as NPT Cocaptain of her street.
