In the past six months there have been six deaths at sea on beaches between Mindarie and Lancelin. On Sunday 2 June, in a boat accident a man died and three other fishermen suffered hypothermia off Lancelin Island. It is understood the recreational boat began to take on water rapidly and the men were plunged into freezing water. A local rock lobster fishing boat found the men and transferred them to the sea rescue vessel. During the recent abalone season, a man drowned at Yanchep. In January 2013, a 47year-old British man died after
being caught in a rip while swimming at Claytons Beach, Mindarie, In March 2013, a 13 year old boy also drowned at Claytons Beach. In April 2013, a 58 year old man died after becoming trapped underwater while diving for crays just north of the Two Rocks Marina. Another man drowned in April, an incident at Two Rocks Marina. Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA), working with the City of Wanneroo, have been asking the community for assistance to help make our beaches safer. The City of Wanneroo appointed SLSWA to undertake a coastal

risk and safety signage audit to improve safety at our beaches. SLSWA Community Safety Manager, Chris Peck, is hoping the finding of the audit will lead to improved coastal aquatic safety measures at our beaches. Back in 2004, the WA Department of Health produced a report ‘Western Australian Water Safety Framework’ to monitor the trends in fatal drownings and hospitalised near-drownings in Western Australia. The Sun City News has been unable to find any Department of Health reports accessing the outcomes or effectives from this strategy.
