China Sourcing Fair in Miami June 19-21 GLOBAL SOURCES’ China Sourcing Fair is coming to the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami, FL June 19-21. Now in its fourth year, the import/ export fair provides flea market vendors the opportunity to source directly from a wide array of quality manufacturers from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The five product pavilions are Electronics, Gifts & Premiums, Home Products, Fashion Accessories, and Garments & Textiles.

Deals on new products Last year, the Miami fair drew around 800 manufacturers and suppliers, as well as more than 6,000 attendees. Bill Janeri, general manager of Global Sources, forecasts 7,500 show visitors at the upcoming event. “Flea market vendors are looking for new sources of quality products and that next hot product that will ignite sales at their booths,” says Janeri. “China Sourcing

Fair provides an opportunity for them to find deals on new products, and to meet and form relationships with potential suppliers. Many manufacturers are looking to expand into other markets, and are willing to start with smaller orders and grow with businesses. The flea market and import/export worlds are coming together. This is due in part to a global economy as well as to product availability and technology. Online sourcing has opened the door to a lot of suppliers that flea market vendors did not have access to before.”

Product preferences survey To better understand buyers’ sourcing behavior and their product preferences, Global Sources conducts an annual survey of professional buyers of consumer products in North America and Latin America. Of the 562 respondents to its February 2014 survey, more than half (55 percent) have been in business for over 10 years. “This indicates that these show visitors are well-established buyers and importers of consumer products for the Latin American market,” Janeri notes. The survey also revealed that 91 percent of respondents are buying more or plan to buy more products from Asia this year. Nearly three quarters (74 percent) of respondents are small companies with less than 50 employees. More than half of respondents (53 percent) have been importing products from Asia for more than five years. Show registration is free for qualified buyers. To enter the show, all visitors must present a business card with their name and company name printed on it. No one under 18 years old will be admitted at any time during the event. ■

How to Supplement Sales with Liquidation Merchandise by Nathania Stambouli

WITH THE rapid rise of bargain shopping and the proliferation of ecommerce and coupon sites like Amazon and Groupon Goods, consumers’ shopping behavior has changed dramatically over the past several years. Shoppers are now increasingly focused on getting the best possible deals on the highest quality name brand items. Flea market vendors are now faced with the new challenge of attracting extreme value driven shoppers, which can present a struggle when sourcing inventory. The wholesale marketplace is full of new master case non-branded items that are in decreasing demand, leaving room for a different type of product to take center stage. With liquidation merchandise, vendors are able to supplement their regular assortment of goods with high demand branded items, offering their customers real bargains while increasing their margins significantly.

Brand names for the budget conscious Merchants worldwide are capitalizing on liquidation goods by sourcing them at a small percentage of their original retail value, and selling them to bargain hunting consumers at a significant discount over their original price. It is not uncommon to find wholesale lots of high-end branded shoes like Steve Madden, Nine West and Coach, available on the liquidation market for only 12 to 15 percent of their original retail price. Vendors are then able to offer their customers at least a 50 percent discount off the original cost of the shoes, while doubling, if not tripling their investment. Savvy vendors also purchase liquidated branded cosmetics or other impulse items that they place in bargain bins, supplementing their regular inventory with products that help increase the amount of each customer’s purchase. These items also make great marketing tools when used as promotional

giveaways, or gifts with purchase to thank customers for their business.

More varied product mix The nature of liquidation products makes them particularly appropriate for smaller vendors who cater to a wide array of customers. When sourcing inventory from manufacturers or purchasing regular wholesale deals, minimum quantities can be large, often leaving smaller vendors stuck with too many units of the same item. Liquidations offer a different kind of experience, providing vendors with a wider mix of products within a single wholesale purchase. For instance, a liquidation lot of assorted designer clothing may contain a variety that includes outerwear, jeans, tops and a percentage of fashion accessories. Where a regular wholesale purchase of non-liquidation goods might be comprised of 500 units of the same type of item, liquidation lots give vendors access to fewer units of any one item, allowing them to avoid being stuck with excess inventory. This also increases the urgency for consumers to purchase, since there is no guarantee that a particular item will be in offered in the future. Liquidation products are available through liquidation specialists throughout the country, and are usually purchased on an auction basis or at a flat price, depending on the liquidator. Western Express Adds to Multiple Categories WESTERN EXPRESS Inc. is a wholesale distributor of western style clothing and accessories for men, women and children. Operating for more than 30 years, the company carries an extensive line, including shirts, hats and hat accessories, belts and belt buckles, jewelry, leather jackets, bolo ties, holsters and gun belts, and much more. Many of its products are manufactured in the U.S.

Western Express aims to provide retailers with the most up-to-date, popular western fashions, and, as a result, business is booming. “Sales are up 15 percent this year,” shares Dan Mottsman, owner. As the company heads into its busy season, it is well stocked with several new products in many categories, he adds. The company recently expanded its already vast line of hats, and now offers more faux felt, wool felt and straw hats. New styles and colors, in both traditional western and fashion western styles, are available to suit both genders and all ages. The wholesale price for hats starts around $4.50, and the median price is $8 to $10. Retail price is at least double wholesale. Western Express’s western shirts continue to be popular with consumers, and the Stars & Stripes with pearlized snaps is a perennial favorite, Mottsman points out, and the company’s solid retro shirts with smiley pockets are very strong sellers among women. Newly introduced designs include an eagle and a horse. The beginning wholesale price for western shirts is around $16. “We have also expanded our printed wear, including tee shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and ladies’ tank tops.” The company has added to its line of

more than 200 bolo ties, as well. One new arrival that is expected to take off is the Arrowhead bolo tie, which is made in the USA. Composed of nickel-plated lead-free pewter, the tie has finely detailed Victorian-style bolo tips.

“We have a lot of new beaded earrings and necklaces,” Mottsman continues. Hand-painted Peruvian beaded earrings, for example, are comprised of fancy, hypoallergenic wirework and Czech glass. “We also sell earrings and pendants in little boxes shaped like cowboy hats, and they do very well.” In addition, the company has a selection of western style sunglasses with trimmings such as a horsehead, a gold star, a cowgirl and a flower. Western Express has expanded its holster line to include holster belts, which wholesale for around $11. New smartphone cases will be introduced later this year. With a product line this broad, it is critical that Western Express’s website be well organized. “We have a fully functional ecommerce website, with detailed, colorful product images,” according to Mottsman. “It is organized by category and has a search button so it is easy for retailers to navigate.” The minimum order is $150.00 for orders within the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and $250.00 for orders to any other country. “We have many satisfied customers who have been with us since our inception,” Mottsman adds. “We are proud to be very customer service oriented.” ■
