FLEA MARKET REPORT Informe de Mercado de Pulgas Tech-Savvy Vendors/ Managers and Cautious Optimism Are Top Trends By Barbara Scofidio

THE 2014 Flea Market Directory Report reflects an increasingly discerning and tech-savvy vendor and market manager—as well as customer—and a slowly improving purchasing environment.

Technology Almost three-quarters of the vendors surveyed (67.9 percent) said they prefer to order online over phone or through email, and 44.3 percent consider product ads or searches on wholesale websites to be the best source for finding new merchandise. The number of vendors with smartphones or tablets has grown dramatically—73.6 percent this year versus 58 percent in 2013. Of those, 88.9 percent are using various apps, including POS, and 75.4 percent said they would like to see a wholesale shopping app hit the marketplace. Surprisingly, as much as they are using technology for purchasing, communications, and processing orders, there is a lag in the percentage of vendors using it for their own marketing. The number of responding vendors with their own web sites remained exactly the same as in the 2013 survey, at 27.9 percent. And when asked if they plan to have a web site in the future, the responses were nearly split, with 48.4 percent saying yes and 51.6 percent saying no.

Social media The use of social media among vendors has not taken off as quickly either, with just 42.2 percent using it to promote their businesses. Of those who do, Facebook is overwhelmingly the favorite platform, used by 91.7 percent, while Twitter is used by only 27.8 percent. Some flea market managers are taking this lack of comfort with social media into their own hands. “We’re actually doing training sessions for our vendors,” says Dave Wolff, co-owner of Wolff’s Flea Markets in Rosemont and Palatine, IL. “And we’re showing them how to promote continued on page 46 44

their products on our Facebook page.” He has plans to hire someone over the summer who will be assigned specifically to social media. “We’re pretty busy and sometimes it is hard to get to. We need someone who is tech-savvy and social media-savvy to post on Facebook and create more of a Twitter presence.” It is also a key strategy for attracting a younger audience, he says. Many of Wolff’s peers are just as focused on social media, with 78.3 percent saying they use the combination of web sites and social media for marketing.

Advertising “It is so easy to get information out there through the web site,” says John R. Chism, CSM, CFMA, general manager of the Quakertown Farmers & Flea Market in Quakerstown, PA, who includes everything from weather to a map of the market to video links from his vendors on his site. “We do a weekly ad sheet, which used to go just into the newspaper, and now people can print it off our web site before they come to the market.” However, as web-centric as managers are becoming, print is still popular for advertising— but 64.7 percent of market managers still used newspaper ads and 41.2 percent used magazine ads to promote their markets.

How’s business? Annual sales for most vendors (61.6 percent) came in at less than $20,000 in 2013; 20.9 percent have sales between $20,001 and $50,000; and 17.4 percent have sales over $50,000. The good news is that 40.7 percent expect higher sales this year, which is exactly the same percentage response as last year—reflecting a sustained sense of optimism among vendors. The vast majority of vendors (65.1 percent) spent up to $10,000 per year on wholesale merchandise in 2013; 18.1 percent spend between $10,001 and $25,000; 12.1 percent spend between $25,001 and $50,000 and 4.8 percent spend over $50,00. A little over one-third plan to increase their spending in 2013, and almost half will spend the same, leaving a small number (15.7 percent), who will decrease what they buy for resale. continued on page 48 46

When it comes to purchasing, price is still the top criteria for almost three-quarters of responding vendors, followed by no or low minimum orders. In fact, both of those superceded product quality. This points to a cautious approach to buying that still exists among most vendors.

Chism thinks a big part of this is the investment of the vendors in making it work. “People who rent space from us are owners of their own businesses and that makes them try harder, versus employees who are not as invested. This is their livelihood.â€? Rob Sieban, director of the Mile High Flea Market in Henderson, CO, and president of the National Flea Market Association, agrees that the flea market industry is not immune to the downturn. He believes that today’s consumer is looking for more than shopping, and flea markets offer greater entertainment value than traditional stores. “There’s entertainment, music, kids’ rides, food— it’s not only about the merchandise. A lot of our core customers work six days a week and the only day they have off is Sunday. These elements make it more of an all-day fun event, not just a transactional experience.â€?

FEATURE INTERVIEW

Q&A with NFMA President Rob Sieban THE NATIONAL Flea Market Association (NFMA) named Rob Sieban the new president last month, replacing former president Darren Kurkowski who served since February 2012. Sieban is also CEO of The Mile High Flea Market in Henderson, CO. The Merchandiser Media Group (MMG) recently had the opportunity to ask him some questions as he began his tenure as leader of the organization.

MMG: What do you see as your goals and priorities upon taking office?

Sieban: Past presidents have built a great foundation. I will build on that and enhance those accomplishments moving forward. I hold myself to high expectations in order to fulfill the hopes of our member markets. In support of that goal I plan to develop a “best of class” board of directors and focus on ensuring we remain relevant to all of our members. Building a board of directors that runs the span of markets throughout

the nation is also very important. The flea market industry is a changing environment and we need to stay close to our member markets to ensure that the representation is relevant in today’s world. In addition, it is important to make sure the member markets feel value and partnership from the association. We cannot exist without them so being in touch and responding to their needs is of primary concern to me. We want to continue to build strength by increasing membership, as there are over 1500 flea markets nationwide. Another very important part of my focus is to ensure that the concerns of our member markets from a federal legislation perspective are well represented in Washington. This is to guarantee the free enterprise activity of the flea market business continues to prosper and grow through the support of legislators who find great value in the business incubator we create for our buyers and sellers. Thankfully there is an incredible foundation laid down before me and I am lucky to be continued on page 52

Sieban: I see the flea market business evolving to focus on value and entertainment. Value has always been a critical part of a flea market but the entertainment component is becoming critically important also. There are so many opportunities for people to spend their money in different ways, so being able to create an entertaining environment while they are shopping for a great value is vital. People want a family environment and to spend the day together. At Mile High flea market we create an environment that includes musical entertainment. This year we were fortunate to have Smiley’s Flea Markets and Denio’s Market, who presented their knowledge of how they operate and their successful ideas. Smiley’s has been in existence for many generations and they spoke about the importance of listening to the consumer and reacting and evolving. How to Sell American Handmade By Karen Hohler

BUYING AND selling American handmade items can make your flea market business stronger, and expand your customer base. Drawing new people in becomes easier when carrying exclusive and unusual products that customers can’t find elsewhere. Not only does this help build your reputation as being a unique destination to shop, but it also strengthens your community and the American craft movement. Following are tips on how you can benefit from selling handmade items, and how to promote them.

Use special interest stories to promote sales. One way to purchase items is at a craft wholesale show, where you as a vendor can meet directly with the artist and gain valuable insight on the product and the process behind it. This allows you to learn about the artists and their work, so that you can engage your customers with interesting stories about each piece.

Make displays more engaging and appealing. Ask the artists for pictures of themselves and enclosure cards to go with their work. Or if at a show, pull out your digital camera and ask to take a head shot. Interview them about the creative process, the materials used, and what they say to potential buyers that helps make the sale. Put a picture of the artist and a bit about the work on display, to play up the handmade factor. That personal touch adds value to a gift.

Increase sales to tourists and locals. Tourists love buying American handmade gifts and souvenirs to bring home. Conversely, locally made things are impressive to send or bring to friends in other states and countries. Use this as a selling feature by promoting the craftsmanship, creativity and quality of the items you sell. Your customers will enjoy hearing that their purchase is as individual as the person they are giving it to.

Let customers know you are supporting local jobs. The 3/50 Project states that for every $100 spent in locally, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online and nothing comes home. If the items are American handmade, closer to $100 stays in your community.

Promote the “Buy Local” and “Buy American” message. Buying American handmade increases the sense of community. Your customers will appreciate that you have made the effort to bring something to them that means more than just the object itself. They can also be proud that they are supporting a small business.

Help make dreams come true. Buying handmade work enables artists to fulfill their dreams of freedom, financial independence and being in charge. Artisans make things that take years of learning, practice and skill building. They do this with a passion and dedication that is often not part of business today.

Help save the environment. Transportation of products and increased packaging for overseas and long distance travel creates pollution. The closer you can source goods for your store, the less you contribute to pollution and energy costs. In addition, you can be sure that what you are selling was not made in a sweatshop, where conditions, hours and wages do not support a basic cost of living. American handmade helps both artists and vendors improve their businesses, while allowing the craft industry to prosper. ■ Karen Hohler created and managed Whippoorwill Crafts for 29 years in Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace, The Shops at Prudential Center, and downtown Boston’s Financial District. A Founding Member of CRAFT in 2002, Hohler started working on CRAFT committees immediately, and joined the board two years later. She served as President from 2007- 2014. CRAFT is a national organization of craft retailers and artisans. Its goal is to strengthen members’ businesses, promote the appreciation of American craft, and support the craft industry. ASIA AMERICA Wholesale Show THE ASIA AMERICA Wholesale Show, held in both spring and fall, attracts buyers from 43 countries, including the Caribbean, Central and South America, and the U.S. At the spring show in April, 4,000 buyers attended allowing both buyers and exhibitors who could not come to the September show because of other commitments an opportunity to purchase and exhibit products. “Because of the location buyers can eliminate long travel trips,” explains Michael Finocchiario, president of the ASIA AMERICA Wholesale Show. “Miami is the Hub of the Americas and has easy access to over 43 markets in this region.” For the first time, the ASIA AMERICA Wholesale Show is targeting summer buyers. “This is a new market that hasn’t been tapped, and we received many requests from our exhibitors to expand into two shows. Many companies are exhibiting with us at both the spring and fall shows, looking for buyers of both summer and winter merchandise,” says Finocchiario.

May 2014

The next show is September 8-10, 2014. “Last year we had 8,000 attendees, we hope to pass it this September, as our name is becoming recognized as ‘the show to go to’ for Caribbean, Latin American and Southeast US buyers,” notes Finocchiario. “One thing is for certain: buyers who attend the ASIA AMERICA Trade Show will find everything they need at the best prices. The Asia America Wholesale Show is fast becoming the new Vegas for Trade Shows.” Vendors may register for the show for free at asiaamericatradeshow.com. Exhibitors planning to attend the show can contact ASIA AMERICA for required booth sizes, and show personnel will recommend the best available spaces. ■

News • Novedades The Value Of Selling American Handmade Here are three reasons to sell American handmade items: Make dreams come true. Buying handmade work enables artists to fulfill their dreams of freedom, financial independence and being in charge. Artisans make things that take years of learning, practice and skill building. Craftsmanship, creativity and quality items. There is an appeal for tourists to buy American handmade gifts and souvenirs to bring home. Conversely, locally made things are impressive to send or bring to friends in other states and countries. Help save the environment. Transportation of products and increased packaging for overseas and long distance travel creates pollution. The closer you can source goods, the less you contribute to pollution and energy costs. ■

Star Cutouts Walking Dead Masks IF YOU see flat masks in the U.K.—from a member of the Royal Family to a character from “Doctor Who”—it is very likely a Star Cutouts product. The company is now coming to the U.S. with a variety of masks that feature a collection of all the main characters from the popular “Walking Dead” series on AMC, including Daryl, Rick, and Michonne. “That show has gone completely out of this orbit,” says Steve Hoagland, international licensing and sales director for Star Cutouts, and a key person responsible for the U.S. expansion. “It had 15 million viewers in the U.S. at last count, more than double from last year. I have a feeling it is only going up from there, and there’s a spin-off coming.” Star Cutouts also has various licensing agreements in the works, and as Hoagland puts it, “there will be royals, along with a presidential candidate or two.

Politician masks are very popular.” Lifesized cutouts, including stand-in models, are also available in hundreds of designs and characters, ranging from penguins to the Pope.

Child-friendly Hoagland says the masks have two important differentials from the competition: their retail price points are under $5, and they are flat, with holes for the eyes, not the mouth. “Instead of an expensive, over-the head latex mask for $30 or $40, for a few bucks you can try one of these,” he notes. And for kids, there’s no fear or discomfort associated with putting on a mask. “Those three-year-olds who don’t like the plastic shell masks that come with their Halloween costumes might only leave them on for 15 to 20 minutes. But with a flat mask, you can see peripherally out of the side, and it continued on page 59

99 Cent Phone Chargers Are Priced To Profit THIS YEAR the number of mobile phones is predicted to exceed the world’s population, according to a study by the International Telecommunications Union. With that comes the need for mobile accessories, especially phone chargers. The company 99 Cent Phone Chargers offers flea market vendors a way to cash in with easy, low cost entry point car chargers, wall chargers and iPhone sync cables for all iPhone models.

Multiple purchases The charger products wholesale for 99 cents and suggested retail is $2.99. Six colors are available: black, green, light blue, pink, purple, and red. Owner Michael Johnson says the average sale is about five items and

in some cases customers will go nuts and buy 12 or 15. “For instance, a mother will come in and she has two daughters and a son. She might get a pink, green and a blue so her family can tell them apart. Very seldom will just one item be sold.” The product is shipped loose with a cover to protect from scratches. Johnson says to encourage impulse buys the product can be displayed in bins or baskets to attract buyers and show the unique colors. “Our pricing is comparable to import pricing but being owned and operated in the U.S. allows that we can get the product out within 24 hours and to most destinations within three days,” explains Johnson, who has been an importer for 25 years. Scents of Florida: A Story of Quality DWIGHT KANAYET started in the home fragrance industry when he was 18, going door-to-door selling incense. Now he is launching his own company, Scents of Florida, incorporating all he has learned to create the highestquality scented oils, incense, and candles, along with complementary accessories. “There are two pillars that are the foundation of what we do: quality and customer service, he says. “If you provide your customers with the best product quality and the best service— delivering items on time, in good shape, and nicely presented—they will do better and you will grow. Kanayet, chief commercial officer, and CEO Juan Domingo Cordero chose the name Scents of Florida for their company not only because it is based there but because Florida is known for its natural surroundings and fresh fruits.

But the scents they offer span the globe, from Australian Eucalyptus to Cuban Coconut to Egyptian Musk. There are dozens to choose from, ranging from the playful to the sensual. The scented oils are made with 100 percent essential oil. While some companies use various chemicals to dilute the product or add alcohol so it evaporates faster, “Ours is long-lasting and stays stronger longer, with a more pleasant and pure scent, he says. The oils cost 65 cents per half-ounce unit, with a minimum of 18 units (total cost per box: $11.70) or $1.35 per two-ounce unit with a minimum of 12 units (total cost per box: $16.20). Thirty-two-ounce bottles are also available at a unit price of $32. Incense is another of the company’s offerings. “Our continued on page 63

Go Back to www.FleaMarketZone.com SUPPLIER PROFILE incense is 100 percent oil-based and we use no alcohol, because that makes it dry out faster. If you use it and then wait a month to use more, it will be as fresh as the when you first bought it,” he says. It also burns longer—an hour and 15 minutes, versus 20 to 30 minutes of most products on the market now. Bulk incense sticks are sold at $6 per bundle of 300 sticks, with a minimum quantity of one bundle, or pre-packed with 20 sticks per carton, 12 cartons per bundle (79 cents per carton, $9.48 per bundle). The company’s other product line is scented candles, for which Scents of Florida uses 100 percent fully refined paraffin and 100 percent essential oils. “Most companies use fragrance just on top of the candle, not in the rest of the wax. We use a process to mix the fragrance with the paraffin and color,

all at the same time.” Scents of Florida launched at the Las Vegas ASD Show in March and will also attend the August expo. Right now, Kanayet is concentrating on the final touches for the packaging, which he also thinks will differentiate his product. “It will tell you that inside there is something special. Again, it’s not a matter of launching a product but doing it the right way, so the customer knows you put great care into it.” The web site is expected to launch in May, and will include a wholesale portal. ■

All exhibitors offer order-writing and cash-and-carry, which Linda calls, “wildly popular and preferred by our family of exhibitors and buyers.” She had buyers filling several dollies at once with merchandise at the last show; others have been known to come in on the last day and clean out booths to stock up their stores.

Nikke Norton is known across the fashion industry as a trend spotter, and eagerly offers an insider’s view of what’s hot for summer. “The colors right now are coral and aqua. They are ever y where. And the number one seller is leggings in bright colors and patterns.” As far as jewelry, she says, “We are talking huge, chunky pieces with crystals and lots of bling,” like pieces from jewelry designer exhibitor, Renee Tompkins of Puttin’ On the Glitz. For the feet, there are peep-toe stilettos to go with the leggings. The accessory Norton can’t get enough of? Jeweled handbags by another exhibitor, Raviani.

FOR 27 years, Norton’s Apparel, Jewelry, and Gift Market has been all about the personal touch. That is sure to be the case once again June 7-9, when the all-season wholesale market returns to its home base, the Gatlinburg Convent ion Center. “So many of our exhibitors tell us we are their favorite show, and they feel like they are part of the Norton family,” says Nikke Norton, sole proprietor of Norton’s Gatlinburg Gift and Variety Show, LLC. She runs the show with her parents, Tom and Linda Norton, owners of the Gatlinburg Apparel and Jewelry Market, LLC. The joint shows will also be held again later this year, September 6-8 and November 15-17. Norton describes the mood of the event as, “very relaxed and laid back.” There is always live music, with a saxophonist planned for June. In November the Nortons give their exhibitors Christmas gifts, and Linda Norton visits each booth and personally thanks exhibitors for coming at the end of every show.
