Smith has the winning formula. “I think there’s a lot of awareness out there and there are many people who would prefer to buy American-made—but awareness and action are two different things,” he says. “If you have two equivalent items side by side and there’s just a slight variation in price, people are going to go for the one that’s made in the U.S.” But there’s a point where price wins out. In the case of his company’s products, he says, “We’re able to offer Made in the U.S.A. at China prices. With wholesale costs from $2.97 to $7.49, they are clearly affordable and offer the same markup of two to three times the wholesale price.” The plaques are made to order, something that also could not be done using mass manufacturing. Starting with domestic wood as the base, the images are digitally printed, the artwork is hand-applied, and then a piece of twine is added as hanger, giving them a country look. Regardless, he says, “People like to see Made in U.S.A., especially at wholesale trade shows, where we find we’re only one of a few vendors who can make that claim. SJT Enterprises started making its popular dog plaques in the middle of the recession, and the concept just took off. “We just came up with the idea to make plaques with the different dog breeds. People are passionate about their dogs. They’re members of the family. And anything having to do with dogs sells.” Today, the dog plaques make up 90 percent of his business. “I never would have guessed they would have done so well,” he admits. “We

SARA SHOREES found inspiration for her company’s new shower and bath scrub while watching Rachael Ray on TV. “I was watching her show and she had a doctor on who was doing tests on shower scrubs and found a lot of bacteria, yeast, and fungus on people’s scrubs,” Shorees, CEO of Bish Bish, remembers. “His suggestion was to replace the scrubs every three weeks. I did that for a while, then I had an idea and crocheted something I could machine wash and bleach. Beach Tacs Keep Towels in Place MOST EVERYBODY loves beach season—except when it means fighting the wind to keep your towels in place and free of grit. A company called ACME Big Box Marketing, Inc., has fi nally figured out the perfect solution: BeachTacs. BeachTacs are stakes that hold a towel firmly in place on the sand w it hout pu nch i ng holes in the towel. The product’s appeal is its simplicity. As a bonus, each BeachTac set also comes with a built-in cup-holder. According to Pagona Kubert, vice president of sales, the first orders of BeachTacs were shipped in April 2014, and the product immediately took off. “Our market is anyone who goes to the beach,” Kubert says. The BeachTac has a special locking

stack that makes it special. BeachTacs were developed by Larry Freed, currently a partner in the company, almost 20 years ago. After sitting in his garage for all those years, the novel towel-holding system was patented and trademarked and put into production in the United States earlier this year. Each set of BeachTacs includes four locking stakes. One of the stakes has a built-in cup-holder that can accommodate a Solo cup or standard size drink can. The road to success Two years ago, I inquired about how to become a flea market vendor and started my road to what I now call “success.” I know many define success in different ways, but as a small business owner staying afloat at two locations defined success for me. I can also say that being a vendor at the flea market also played a major role in the success in my retail store, due to the ongoing demands of my customers beyond the weekend traffic. I was elated at the response from my newfound customer base at the flea market, which allowed us to open our second location. L&V Creations’ Quality Control Process Eliminates Skepticism L&V CREATIONS, like consumers in the U.S. and other countries, was skeptical about the quality of products from China. That’s when Luis Santoni, owner, came to the conclusion that in order to keep his company’s reputation he had to do something to overcome the problem. To do this, Santoni decided to implement a costly but effective new quality control process of taking every single product out the box to be inspected and tested. L&V Creations is a family owned company that offers plug in aroma lamps for aromatherapy. “This idea cost me a lot of money because I had to hire additional personnel to take the product out of box, check for damage, loose parts and blemishes. We also plug them in test them, not once but several times,” explains Santoni. “No one in the industry is doing anything like this.” If anything is damaged or loose it is repaired before it leaves the premises. The benefit, Santoni says, is that customers receive

a functional product, eliminating the skepticism of its quality. “You have to ask yourself, would you be happy if a product is manufactured and assembled in China and then a company here in the U.S. checked it out and gave it a quality control test before shipping it to you? Yes? Well that’s the same response we get from our customers.” L&V Creations is working towards assembling all their products in the U.S. in the near future and Santoni says they hope to use the experience they gained from implementing this process to do that. “Even though we just started this, the people love it. It makes us feel good that they are really happy.” ■

ASD to Host New TV Show “The Big Pitch” With Kevin Harrington RECENTLY, ASD Las Vegas was approached with the idea of creating an ASD TV Shopping Show to air in top A & B television markets in late 2014.The goal of the innovation-themed program is to showcase ASD’s unique industry to millions of consumers and serve as a launching pad for new ASD exhibitor products. Fall Fest Auto Swap

With mere weeks left to plan what is the busiest of weeks at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds, fair board directors are busy with just that –planning for the 2014 Sandusky County Fair, August 19-24. New to the fair on opening night will be a “Community Appreciation Concert” to take place at the Grandstand stage. The concert at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday will feature area favorites, the “Together Band,” as well as special guest, The Eric Sowers Band. The concert is free of charge with paid admission into the fair. Live music continues with another free concert in the Grandstands on Wednesday night. Allie and The Rockers will take the stage, along with special guest and opening act, David T. Lester. U.S. Small Business Confidence Hits Pre-Recession High The National Federation of Independent Business announced its Small Business Optimism Index increased 1.4 points to 96.6 in May, the highest reading since September 2007, when the economy was about to slide into recession. The index has increased for three consecutive months.

Widespread price hikes The confidence increase also seems to be factoring into pricing decisions. “Price hikes are more widespread than at any time since 2008 (with the exception of a brief period in 2011) and profit trends are improving a bit,” the report said. Seasonally adjusted, the net percentage of owners that have raised their selling prices held at 12%. In addition, a net 21% plan price hikes in the next few months. “If successful, the economy will see a bit more

‘inflation’ as the price indices seem to be suggesting,” the report said.

Job creation Small business owners also increased seasonally adjusted employment by an average 0.11 workers per firm in May. That was the eighth consecutive positive reading–the best string of monthly gains since 2006, the NFIB said. The job creation plan subindex rose 2 points to 10% in May. The index covering job openings remained at the highest level in this expansion, and a net 24% of owners reporting that they face difficulties in filling certain positions. ■
