On that evening, The Summit Foundation and its partners provided 64 Summit High School students with $133,110 in scholarships. Six of the scholarships awarded by The Foundation were distributed through a joint program with Summit County Government. Julie Chandler, mother of Nicole Chandler, stated, “Our family is eternally grateful for The Summit Foundation’s support of Nicole’s education. Your amazing generosity has reinforced Nicole’s understanding of how wonderful it has been to grow up in such a loving and giving community.” In addition to the scholarships awarded to Summit High School graduates, five scholarships totaling $7,000 were awarded this spring to students graduating from neighboring community high schools. The neighboring schools with students who received spring scholarships included Lake County High School, South Park High School, and Vail Mountain School. Scholarship Recipient Profile Justin Hollenbeck After graduation from Summit High School in 2010, Justin Hollenbeck decided to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Denver (DU) because the program offered small class sizes and a rounded curriculum. With a series of scholarships awarded by The Summit Foundation and its partners, NRC Broadcasting, and The Lenzmeier/Williams Advised Fund, as well as other scholarship funds, Justin was financially assisted to pursue his post-secondary education at DU. Justin’s interest in Biomechanics brought him to work in the Computational Biomechanics Laboratory under Dr. Paul Rullkoetter and Dr. Peter Laz. For the past two years, Justin has contributed to research projects in the lab and has become an author on five publishable papers. His current project, Statistical Shape Modeling of the Lumbar Spine, is set to be presented at the ASME Bioengineering Conference in Oregon and is on course to be published in the Journal of Biomechanics. In another year, he hopes to continue contributing to the Computational Biomechanics Laboratory as a Masters student. Outside of the classroom, Justin is involved in Alpine Club and Kayak Club. He enjoys coming home to Summit County to ski, hike, and mountain bike. Justin is extremely grateful for the support of The Summit Foundation. With The Foundation’s support, he has been able to develop a promising career in Mechanical Engineering and make life-long friendships.

The Summit Foundation | Summer 2013

First Tracks Morning Hosted by Arapahoe Basin Ski Area Thank you to Arapahoe Basin’s staff for turning the lifts early for our fifth annual exclusive program for The Summit Foundation donors. Over 100 of The Summit Foundation’s passholders and top donors arrived at the Basin early on March 7th to ski off Lenawee lift and in Montezuma Bowl. The Summit Foundation’s guests enjoyed skiing under blue skies for more than an hour before the mountain opened to the general public. A private breakfast followed at Black Mountain Lodge with remarks by representatives from Arapahoe Basin, Vail Resorts and The Summit Foundation. Donors continue to rave about the buffet breakfast created by Chef Chris Rybak that morning. A big thank you to Arapahoe Basin’s President and Chief Operating Officer Alan Henceroth and his staff for opening their mountain early for The Summit Foundation’s guests.

The Summit Foundation Develops Youth Giving Council $10,000 in Funding Awarded in Mini-Grants In April, the newly formed Youth Giving Council at Summit High School awarded $10,000 in grants to local nonprofits and student organizations. Comprised of students from the Summit High School Leadership class, the Youth Giving Council was started in the fall of 2012 and had been the long-time brainchild of The Summit Foundation Board of Trustee Gini Bradley. The group focuses on teaching youth about philanthropy while allowing them to participate in the grant process. The Summit Foundation’s Events & Marketing Coordinator Elisabeth Lawrence and Trustee Gini Bradley led the students through creating a funding priority, developing a grant application, determining a deadline for submission, and then sharing the opportunity with local nonprofits and student groups. Groups applied to the Council for mini-grants (up to $1,500) that would have a significant impact on Summit County youth. The Council then reviewed the applications and determined their grant award amounts. Sophomore Emily Carlson said, “I like that something we are doing now can make a lasting impact on the future of Summit County youth.” All the students agreed that it was a great opportunity to give back to the community and learn about many local nonprofits.

Grant Recipients The students selected these groups to receive funds for the following projects: Photo by Butch Elich A warm and brilliant blue sky day in early March was the back drop for Arapahoe Basin’s exclusive morning for The Summit Foundation donors.

2012 Annual Report has been Published

Photo by Bob Winsett Wally Ducayet is known for his daily walks through the Breckenridge town streets with his yellow lab, Holly.

Board of Trustee Profile Wally Ducayet Wally Ducayet grew up in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts and began skiing as a youth. He and his family started coming to Summit County to ski in the early 80’s. When it came time to retire, there was no other choice besides Summit County. Wally and his wife Maggie became permanent residents on High Street in Breckenridge in 2002. They have four children and five grandchildren scattered across the country. Summit County has become a great place for the family to gather and visit. Wally, a CPA, is a retired partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). While he spent his entire career with PwC as an International Tax Specialist, the family lived in Buffalo, Paris, Chicago and Houston before arriving in Summit County. “Much like the small resort town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts where I grew up, I found the friendliness and community atmosphere of Breckenridge and Summit County quickly made me feel at home,” Wally says. “When I was a youth, the daily trip to the Post Office was the place to see friends and neighbors on a regular basis. Some things never change.” Often accused of “flunking” retirement, Wally spends much of his time volunteering with many of Summit County’s nonprofits. In addition to serving on The Summit Foundation’s Board of Trustees, Wally is a Director, Treasurer and Past President of the Breckenridge Music Festival, Director and Treasurer of Breckenridge Heritage Alliance, and Treasurer of St. John’s Episcopal Church. For many years he volunteered with the BOEC Adaptive Ski Program. Not to be outdone, Maggie is the Founder and Executive Director of Summit in Honduras, a local nonprofit devoted to improving health and education in small rural towns in Honduras. Summit in Honduras is currently building its fourth school. Wally also serves as a Director. “Since joining The Summit Foundation Board in 2012 I have gained a much stronger appreciation of the support it provides to the community,” Wally noted. “The fact that last year The Summit Foundation provided $1.7 million to the local community is just incredible.”

The Summit Foundation recently released our annual report for 2012. If you did not receive a copy of the annual report, or if you would like additional copies, please call us at 970.453.5970 or email tsfadmin@summitfoundation.org. We welcome the opportunity to distribute our latest annual report to newcomers to the community, as well as to clients and friends of our current donors. In addition to recognizing The Summit Foundation’s many donors and volunteers, the report is a great representation of all the work of the nonprofit organizations in our mountain communities. You might consider making additional copies of The Summit Foundation’s annual report available in your business to represent your support to our community. Thank you to Wilson Lass and Nationwide Argosy Solutions for providing the graphic design and printing of this report pro-bono to The Summit Foundation.

Join us for the 26th Anniversary Great Rubber Duck Race on August 31, 2013 We are happy to be celebrating 26 years of rubber duck racing! Join us and thousands of spectators on Saturday, August 31st near the Blue River in Breckenridge to enjoy this cornerstone event sponsored by Grand Lodge on Peak 7. The Kids Duck Dash will kick-off the three duck races at 1 p.m., as 750 ducks are dropped from the Adams Street Bridge into the Blue River. More than 40 prizes for the kids race are being donated by Peak-A-Boo Toys, Vail Resorts Echo, and other businesses. The second of the three races begins at 2 p.m. from Main Street Station. FirstBank of Summit County is sponsoring this Business Battle Duck Race, where little yellow swimmers purchased by local organizations and businesses will compete for a private group snow cat experience on Chicago Ridge, among other group-oriented prizes. And finally at 3 p.m., the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Great Rubber Duck Race will send nearly 10,000 little quackers from Main Street Station streaming for the finish line at the Riverwalk Center. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to a minimum of the top 50 ducks, including a week-long vacation at a destination chosen by the winner. Adopt your ducks online at summitfoundation.org or at various locations around Summit County beginning the first week of August. Thousands of dollars worth of prizes will be awarded... even a prize for the slowest duck. This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, board members, staff, and of course all of our duck race participants. Thank you to our River Spot Sponsors: Climax Molybdenum, PeakOne Surgery Center, Vail Resorts Echo, and Vail-Summit Orthopaedics.

The Summit Foundation | Summer 2013

Nonprofit Profile

Additionally, The Summit Foundation is allowing the LDTC to fully present two music concerts as part of our annual Sunset at the Summit Concert series, which entertains over 30,000 patrons annually and directly enhances the quality of life for our community through the presentation of live music. Because of support from The Summit Foundation, we are excited to bring back summer favorites Kahuna Beach Party, and we look forward to introducing our community to the amazing Manuel Molina Latin Combo. Finally, through support from The Summit Foundation, the LDTC is able to continue to produce quality musical theatre for young audiences, impacting over 2,000 individuals and families. Our original family musicals offer a shared cultural experience that families can discuss and enjoy together while teaching life lessons about empathy, social responsibility and reinforcing the importance of imagination and creativity to children. This summer’s GOLDEN is the world-premiere family musical that reveals what happens when the village mischief-maker Goldilocks pushes too many personal boundaries, resulting in a comical intervention from her friends and neighbors. The LDTC could not fulfill its mission of community impact through the performing arts without the support and partnership of The Foundation. We look forward to an exciting season of cultural experiences for our community.

Help us make this a race to remember by signing up to sponsor, volunteer or donate a prize. Call 970.453.5970 or email Elisabeth at elisabeth@summitfoundation.org.
