82 Scholarships Awarded to High School Graduates On April 2nd, 99 members of the Summit High School Class of 2012 were awarded approximately $316,000 from 76 community organizations. Among these awards, The Summit Foundation and its partners provided 55 students with $105,000 in scholarships. Ten of the scholarships awarded by The Foundation were distributed through a joint program with Summit County Government. Since 1991, The Foundation’s scholarship program has awarded more than $1.9 million to local high school graduates. “It was overwhelming to see how many scholarships were handed out by the community and The Summit Foundation in particular!” said Laura Johnson, a mother of a scholarship recipient. “I would like to thank The Summit Foundation for awarding Sarah a scholarship. Thank you and all the community for your support of Summit High School students!” In addition to the scholarships awarded to Summit High School graduates, nine scholarships totaling $14,000 were awarded this spring to students graduating from neighboring community high schools. The neighboring schools with students who received spring scholarships included Lake County, South Park, and West Grand High Schools, and Vail Mountain School. The Summit Foundation also assists six other organizations in distributing scholarships. Summit County Rotary Club, ResortQuest, Summit County Garden Club, The Anschutz Foundation, NRC Broadcasting, the Brad Odekirk Memorial Scholarship Fund, and the Summit High School Effort Scholarship awarded $23,152 to 21 students. Including these scholarships, The Summit Foundation participated in awarding 82 scholarships totaling $139,152. (continued on page 2...)

Fall Grant Applications Due August 24, 2012 The Summit Foundation continues to offer an online application for nonprofit organizations to apply for funds to The Summit Foundation. The online format eliminates the requirement of submitting 25 copies. We still offer a downloadable and printable document for those that prefer the older method (but it will require 25 copies when submitted). Both types of applications are accessible through The Summit Foundation’s website. You may also stop by our office in Breckenridge for an application. Any organization planning on submitting a grant request to The Foundation must use a current application form. First time applicants are asked to contact The Summit Foundation’s Executive Director, Lee Zimmerman, at 970.453.5970 to discuss the organization and intended proposal prior to submitting a grant request. Applications must be submitted by noon on Friday, August 24. Requests are accepted from Summit County and Neighboring Community nonprofit organizations that are tax exempt under the provisions of Section 501(c)3 and 170 (b)(1)(a)(i.V.I) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Summit Foundation supports organizations that enhance the quality of life for residents and guests of Summit County. Those organizations providing programs or services in the areas of Art and Culture, Education, Environment, Health and Human Service, Sports and Recreation are eligible for funding consideration. Grant applications will also be accepted for projects and programs operating in Alma, Fairplay, Kremmling, and Leadville. The Foundation will not participate in a political campaign on behalf of any issue or candidate. Additionally, The Foundation does not fund religious organizations.

Scholarship Recipient Profile Daniela Lopez-Morales In 2006, Summit High School graduate Daniela Lopez-Morales was a recipient of the Lenzmeier/Williams Advised Fund scholarship from The Summit Foundation. The four year scholarship allowed Daniela to pursuit a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Colorado College. Since her college graduation in May 2010, Daniela has found herself on a different path than originally planned. That summer following graduation, Daniela applied for at least 20 job openings in pursuit of a laboratory assistant position at the University of Colorado. “The plan back then was to get a job for about a year, then apply for graduate school to get a Ph.D. in developmental biology,” Daniela noted. “After several attempts at finding a job, I sort of gave up and ended up, believe or not, babysitting.” Daniela never expected her career path and future to change when she landed that babysitting job. She says that watching a 4-month-old infant grow into a year-old toddler left her in awe of human development. During this same period of time, she was taking classes at the CMC, including a class on human development. In summer 2011, she responded to job posting in Summit Daily News to work in Early Intervention at Summit County Public Health. Following a six-month training period, Daniela became a Developmental Intervention Assistant for Early Intervention, through which she worked with therapists to bring services to children with developmental delays and to children with disabilities that could lead to developmental delays. This job led to her current position with Family & Intercultural Resource Center in which she serves as an Early Head Start parent educator. “What I love the most about my job is being welcomed into the homes of the families with which I work,” Daniela noted. Daniela visits a child’s home and provides information and activities to foster school readiness and/or help them catch up in their development. Daniela is happy to be living and working back in Summit County and The Summit Foundation is proud to see a Summit High School graduate and former scholarship recipient thrive in her work with one of our nonprofit grant recipients. This summer, Daniela will marry her fiancé Joe Hauck at the Silverthorne Pavilion.

The Summit Foundation Welcomes Two New Team Members

Elisabeth Lawrence: Events and Marketing Coordinator As a child, Elisabeth Lawrence tagged along with her mother to countless nonprofit board meetings, volunteer opportunities, and community service events. Through her actions, her mom instilled in Elisabeth volunteering as more than a choice, it was a way of life. The Summit Foundation is now blessed by such an upbringing. Elisabeth has brought her life-long love of community service to The Foundation as Events and Marketing Coordinator. While studying Political Science at Arkansas State University, Elisabeth interned in the Athletic Marketing Office. Her job involved soliciting donations, obtaining sponsorships, and managing events for the Indian Club, which supported Division 1 student-athletes. Through that experience, Elisabeth realized her passion for fundraising through event planning. Her journey led her to Breckenridge for what she thought would be one ski season. 10 years later, she is immersed in the community.

Elisabeth’s initial years in Breckenridge were spent working in retail – even owning a shop on Main Street, Cookin’ Cowgirl, for two and a half years. More recently, Elisabeth was the Regional Marketing Coordinator for Alpine Bank for four years. In addition, she has sought leadership roles in our community, with a primary focus on education – most recently serving on the Board of Directors for Carriage House and as the PTA President for Upper Blue Elementary School. Her notable volunteer service, tremendous network, and true passion for events are an asset in her new role. A long-time volunteer and contributor to The Summit Foundation, Elisabeth knows and loves the events hosted by The Foundation and looks forward to now ensuring their success. Elisabeth and her 6-year-old daughter Zoe reside in Breckenridge. If you do not already know Elisabeth, be sure to introduce yourself at an event this summer and don’t be surprised if you get a big hug and a “Hey, y’all!”

In March, Jennifer Stein (former Events and Marketing Coordinator) accepted a position with National Parks Service – a job she has sought since she was a little girl. We wish Jennifer the very best in following her dream career.

Terri Johnson: Database and Accounting Administrator The Summit Foundation welcomes a long-time volunteer, Terri Johnson, as Database and Accounting Administrator. Terri has volunteered with The Foundation since its inception in 1984 when the office was run out of a trailer in the dirt parking lot at Peak 8. Terri began her career in the accounting department at the Breckenridge Ski Area. She worked her way up the ladder – eventually working for the Japanese parent company, where she was responsible for the financial reporting of six subsidiaries of the company, all of which were associated with various resorts. Following a brief stint in accounting at Keystone Resort, she landed a job working at Western Pipeway, a local construction company and long-time contributor to The Foundation. Terri loved that job – exemplified by her 16-year tenure there – and the challenges that came with working in the construction industry of western Colorado. It was a fast-paced office where she learned more accounting and financial skills that will assist her in her position at The Foundation. Terri is a Colorado native, born in Denver, and moved to Summit County in 1974. She and her husband Brent raised two children, both of whom received scholarships from The Foundation. Their daughter is now a nurse at a hospital in Fort Collins, and their son lives in San Francisco and works as a superintendent at a private golf club. Terri enjoys spending time with her growing family. Terri is excited to work for The Summit Foundation and offer her skills wherever they are needed.

Since 2008, Amy Priegel (former Database and Accounting Administrator) has been pursuing her Masters in Accounting and Business Administration and recently secured her career goal position – working in tax accounting with Alpine Accounting Services in Breckenridge. We wish Amy the best in her new endeavors.

The Summit Foundation’s guests enjoyed skiing under blue skies off Mercury and Falcon lifts for an hour before the mountain opened to the general public. A private breakfast followed at Ten Mile Station with remarks by representatives from Breckenridge Ski Resort and The Summit Foundation. A big thank you to Breckenridge Ski Resort’s SVP and COO Pat Campbell, Director of Mountain Operations Gary Shimanowitz, Director of Charitable Contributions Nicky DeFord, and their staff for opening their mountain early for The Summit Foundation’s guests.

Board of Trustee Profile Pat Campbell Pat Campbell’s passion for skiing runs deep, from its beginnings on the slopes of Smuggler’s Notch on family vacations through her time in Wyoming and Idaho in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s prior to coming to Summit County to run the Breckenridge Ski and Ride School. She still likes to rack up the vert as Breckenridge’s Chief Operating Officer. Her career in the industry began in 1985, as an instructor at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Since moving to Summit County in 1999, Pat has been deeply

“Summit County is a terrific place to raise a family and has so many wonderful nonprofit organizations that enhance the quality of life for all of us who live and play here,” says Campbell. “Being a part of The Summit Foundation offers the opportunity to be involved and have a positive impact on a broader scale.” Pat Campbell has been senior vice president and chief operating officer at Breckenridge Ski Resort since October 2009. Prior to that, she served as chief operating officer of Keystone Resort for three years. From 1999 to 2006, Campbell had been director of skier services for Breckenridge Ski Resort, responsible for

overseeing the departments of ski and ride school, ticket and product sales, and guest service, among others. Before that position, Campbell had served as director of the resort’s ski and snowboard school. She was director of the ski and snowboard school for Grand Targhee Ski Resort in Alta, Wyoming from 1995 to 1999, and served in various roles from ski school instructor to assistant ski school director for Jackson Hole from 1985 to 1995. Campbell holds a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and is a Level 3 certified instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors of America. As tremendous as her passion for skiing is, it is nearly matched by her passion for cycling, and she also manages to continue playing hockey. She lives in Summit Cove with her husband Nick Smith and two children, Phineas and Phoebe.

Join us for the 25th Anniversary Great Rubber Duck Race on September 1, 2012! That’s right, this year marks 25 years of duck racing! Join us and thousands of spectators on Saturday, September 1st near the Blue River in Breckenridge to celebrate this special anniversary, sponsored by Grand Lodge on Peak 7. The Kids Duck Dash will kick-off the three duck races at 1 p.m., as 700 ducks are dropped from the Adams Street Bridge into the Blue River. More than 25 prizes for the kids race are being donated by Peak-A-Boo Toys and Vail Resorts Echo.

Adopt your ducks online at summitfoundation.org or at various locations around Summit County beginning the first week of August. Thousands of dollars worth of prizes will be awarded... even a prize for the slowest duck.

The second of the three races begins from Main Street Station at 2 p.m. FirstBank of Summit County is sponsoring this Business Battle Duck Race, where little yellow swimmers purchased by local organizations and businesses will compete for a private group snow cat experience on Chicago Ridge, among other prizes.

This event would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, donors, volunteers, board members, staff, and of course all of our duck participants. Thank you to our River Spot Sponsors: Climax Molybdenum, Peak One Surgery Center, and Vail Resorts Echo.

And finally at 3 p.m., the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Great Rubber Duck Race will send nearly 10,000 little quackers from Main Street Station streaming for the finish line at the Riverwalk Center. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to a minimum of the top 50 ducks, including a week-long vacation at a destination chosen by the winner.

Help us make this silver anniversary a race to remember by signing up to sponsor, volunteer or donate a prize. Call 970.453.5970 or email Elisabeth at elisabeth@summitfoundation.org.

Donor Profile John Daisy “I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Fatty’s Pizzeria owner John Daisy said. “Look at this,” he said, motioning to the view of the Ten Mile Range, “Breckenridge is one of the best ski towns in North America.”

The Summit Foundation | Summer 2012

For more than 15 years, Daisy and his staff have been organizing the on course BBQ for The Summit Foundation’s annual golf tournament. Daisy says he continues to host the lunch for the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Golf Tournament because he has the system down well, enjoys the golfers, and his staff enjoys a day of fun on the course. Daisy also served on The Summit Foundation’s Board of Trustees from 2003 to 2005. Daisy has also been a key leader in the Breckenridge Restaurant Association. He has worked with the organization on fundraisers and ballot initiatives that have come up over the years. The Chapter raises money mainly from their dining guide, through which proceeds are donated back to the community. Since the Association began in 1992, Daisy estimates they have awarded more than $300,000 in donations and scholarships to various community organizations and local students.

Daisy feels the community here thrives because so many individuals take part in nonprofit organizations, in giving back to and supporting each other, and he believes the Town of Breckenridge has used good foresight in budgetary planning.

His community involvement and 30-year success as an independent restaurant owner earned him induction into the Colorado Restaurant Association’s Foodservice Hall of Fame on April 4. The award honors individuals who have merited recognition for their accomplishments and activities in the foodservice industry.

Daisy exemplifies giving back to the community and encourages his staff to donate time and resources to various charities. Through the business and personally, he supports National Repertory Orchestra, The Summit Foundation, Little Red Schoolhouse, Summit County Youth Hockey, and many others. Fatty’s regularly allows community groups to utilize the upstairs space for meetings and fundraisers at no charge.

The Summit Foundation greatly appreciates the long-standing generosity of John Daisy and his staff at Fatty’s. And our entire community is fortunate to have a business owner who appreciates his staff, friends, and residents as much as John Daisy, who also continues to cherish the mountain community he moved to long ago.

Peaks Society to host educational workshop with Author David Fry Friday, July 13, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center A ski home can be a very special place for families through the generations. But relationships among children and grandchildren around this valuable asset may not remain peaceful forever. The typical method of deeding a home to children as tenants-in-common is simple; but does not account for differences in the needs and circumstances of the eventual owners. Saving the Family Cottage: A Guide to Succession Planning for Your Cottage, Cabin, Camp or Vacation Home (Stuart J. Hollander, Rose Hollander & David S. Fry, 3rd Edition, Nolo 2009) is a comprehensive treatment of the perils of

failing to plan carefully for passing a vacation home to the next generation and beyond. In the fourth of a series of educational workshops hosted by The Peaks Society, The Summit Foundation has invited author David Fry to explore with The Summit Foundation’s donors and professional advisors entity ownership in a Limited Liability Company (LLC) as a flexible and democratic solution to this common problem. Join us from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday, July 13th at Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center for a discussion with Attorney David Fry.

This event should be of interest to professional advisors and their clients, donors, as well as anyone who has been faced with the interconnected challenges of property, estate, and philanthropic planning. To RSVP, or to learn more about the workshop, contact Kasey Geoghegan at 970.453.5970 or kasey@summitfoundation.org.
