SCA Named the Top Private School in the Kansas City Area
Summit Christian Academy is pleased to announce that, for the third year in a row, they have been ranked first in the Kansas City Metro area private schools list by the Kansas City Business Journal. This is the 11th consecutive year that SCA has been ranked in the top five on the list.
The Kansas City Business Journal’s annual compilation of private schools, The List, determines school rankings based on fall enrollment figures submitted from each institution. Various other characteristics are also noted, including student to teacher ratio, tuition, and academic curriculum.
“Since 1989, SCA has partnered with families and covenant churches to equip children for the opportunities of today, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, prepare children for eternity,” shared SCA Head of School Chris Hahn. “Great families, great teachers, great things are happening daily within the halls and walls of Summit Christian Academy.”

Early Education “Socktober” Service Opportunity Collects
Over 500 Pair of New Socks
Preschool and Prekindergarten students were inspired to “Aspire Higher” in their inaugural Socktober event! The students collected 532 pairs of new socks which were distributed to the homeless community in the Kansas City area by Free Hot Soup located in Belton.
“We pray that the socks will be a blessing to those who received them, and that they will know they are loved and cared for by our Heavenly Father,” shared Early Education Director Jessica Fisher.

Elementary Students Surpass Food Drive Goal
One of SCA's Core Values is Cultivating Community, recognizing that community extends beyond the walls of the school. The annual Elementary Food Drive helps students see firsthand the importance of serving and blessing their community.
Elementary students donated nearly 5,000 units of food and paper products. Sixth grade students organized items, packed boxes, and loaded trucks. Donations were shared with Kansas City area families through the outreach at Courageous Life Church in Independence and Hearts and Hands in Belton.
“It truly is a highlight of the year to see our students walking through the hallways, proudly carrying their canned goods, and excited to make a difference in the lives of those in need,” shared Elementary Principal Kelly Montgomery. “Together, we are making a meaningful impact in our community.”
First Quarter Elementary Christian Character Awards announced
SCA is pleased to recognize students who consistently exhibit exceptional Christian character through the Christian Character Award program. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to pursue their potential toward attaining the highest level of personal and academic development as well as Christian character. The achievement of Christian Character at SCA is one of the most prestigious recognitions within the school.
Elementary Christian Character recipients for the first quarter of the 2024-25 school year are first grade student Briella Cooper, daughter of Damion and Krista Cooper, and third grade student Kyson Nisely, son of Matthew and Alexa Nisely.

Spiritual High School Seniors Making a Difference: Serving at Shelter KC
In the spirit of giving and community, five high school seniors came together to serve at Shelter KC, a ministry that provides food and support for individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty. Their dedication and hard work have made a tangible impact on the lives of those they serve and are a powerful example of the difference young people can make when they step up and serve others.
For these students, volunteering at Shelter KC was not just about helping those in need; it was about serving Christ by serving others. Matthew 25:35-40 reminds Christians that when we feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and welcome the stranger, we do these things for Christ Himself. This Scripture passage inspired the seniors as they dedicated their time to preparing meals, serving food, and building relationships with those they served.
Message from SCA Head of School Chris Hahn
Happy New Year!
I recently read that about 35% of people make a New Year's Resolution. That same article shared that the second Friday in January is known as "Quitting Day," as most people have abandoned their goal. How about you? Did you make a resolution? Spend less time on social media? Be more patient? Eat better? Exercise more?
One of my resolutions for the past few years has been daily Bible reading, reading through the Bible in a year. For those who may not have made a resolution and those who have already moved on, here is one to consider for each day: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight," Proverbs 3:5-6.
Happy New Year SCA. I am excited to see where God leads in 2025 as we seek and follow Him.

STEWARDS Class Studies Epidemiology
The STEWARDS class recently studied epidemiology through the "Poisoned Picnic Case Study." SCA's own faculty member "Dr. Epema" collaborated with students to sift through data and organize it into charts and tables. Each team submitted a conclusion based on their examination. It turns out the green bean casserole was contaminated with botulism! Many teams correctly arrived at this conclusion! Epidemiology at its finest!
STEWARDS students sift through and study data and research to determine the “poison” in their picnic.

Students Experience Hands-On Voting Education
Elementary students learned firsthand about our country’s great democracy as they participated in the entire voting and election process. Kindergarten through sixth grade students registered to vote and, on Tuesday, November 5, exercised their right to vote as an SCA citizen and cast their ballot for their favorite themed dress day to take place. Each student participated in voter registration, voter verification, voting, and delivery to the ballot box.
The democratic process was facilitated by SCA’s Student Environment of Arduous Study (STEWARDS) third through sixth grade students, who spent much time in advance learning and preparing for the civic process event. The STEWARDS class provided nominations for the ballot and voted on the final ballot to be proposed to the student body. STEWARDS students were each assigned stations to work as an “election official” as each elementary class had a scheduled time to visit the polls and cast their ballots. Absentee ballots were even created so that students that were away from school could cast their vote.
The school was divided into five electoral districts to mimic the electoral college. The final result was a total of 620 ballots cast and tallied, and the popular vote declared that the students received a Cozy Day later in November (receiving 330 votes).
Second grade spelling bee winners (L-R): third place winner Lily Hermida, first place winner Elijah Hammontree, and third place winner Lexi Pyltsov, with Elementary Principal Kelly Montgomery.
Third grade spelling bee winners (L-R): first place winner Lexi De Jong, second place winner Juliette Hatfield, and third place winner Renley Van Maanen, with Elementary Principal Kelly Montgomery.
Fourth grade spelling bee winners (L-R): third place winner Iris Mills, first place winner Elliana Worth, second place winner Luke Eagleburger, with Elementary Principal Kelly Montgomery.
ACSI 5th-8th grade Spell-Off winners (L-R): second place Eden Cervantes, first place Sterling Brockhouse,

Pre-Algebra Students Analyze Global Ratios in Capstone Project
Pre-Algebra students in Mrs. Huffman’s class applied their knowledge of ratios and proportions to explore the challenge of global evangelism in their most recent capstone. Through this engaging project, students discovered the significance of using and understanding ratios by extending their textbook studies from their most recent unit.
In December, each of the Pre-Algebra students was assigned a unique country and tasked with investigating the ratio of citizens who have never been exposed to the gospel to its overall population, utilizing population data from The Joshua Project. Students calculated the ratio of “unreached” individuals in their assigned countries – those who have never heard about the life of Jesus. By flagging their countries onto a world map (pictured) with specific ratios, students could visualize the urgency of missionary efforts in regions where the gospel is largely unknown.
Senior Julean McGregor was the recipient of SCA’s Dr. Finch Endowment Award.
Dr. Harold Finch, who helped shape SCA in their early years as a Board Member and later as a Board Advisor, continues a deep legacy within SCA. Dr. Finch’s family has chosen to honor his memory and legacy with an annual scholarship to be given to an SCA senior.
The discussions that followed this investigation allowed students to comprehend how this data equips missionaries in determining where their efforts could be most effective. This project exemplifies one of the many ways our math department connects real-world applications to classroom studies, and students learn that their math skills can play a significant role in global outreach.

Athletics Winter Sports Well Underway
by Lance Quessenberry, Athletic Director
The new year is here which means our winter sports teams are well into their seasons. Girls Swim, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, and Boys Basketball have been competing hard and working to develop team chemistry to become the best teams they can be.
If you follow our social media, Girls Swim has been breaking school records right and left. They have seen huge improvements individually and as a team. Several swimmers have won races or challenged for the top spots. As a result, the group has become more competitive as a team, including winning their first meet right before Christmas break! The program is in year six and Coach Welch continues to push these girls to give their best.
Coach Thomas and the Wrestling team have also seen big improvements this year. Their roster is large enough to fill most weight classes and that has helped them win multiple duals and tournaments
this year. They have gone from having a few outstanding individual wrestlers, to an outstanding team and program who should do great things in the postseason.
Girls Basketball started well this year. Under Coach Hahn’s leadership, they are 6-5 so far this season and improving every game. They placed 4th in the Eagle Invitational and won their game in the Hy-Vee Showcase. These girls work extremely hard and give all they have every time they are on the court. They will compete in the Archie Tournament later in January and should do well. They will be a tough opponent in the postseason as they continue to improve and get better.
Finally, Boys Basketball has also started well with a 9-3 record. They finished 2nd in the Eagle Invitational and 3rd in the William Jewell Holiday Tournament, Nelson Division. They will compete in the Kearney and Clinton Tournaments in January.
After placing 2nd in the Class 3 State Tournament last year, MSHSAA bumped the team up to Class 5 this year. While
SCA Wrestlers Off to a Great Start!
that seems like a daunting task, these players and coaches are ready for the challenge and should still make a great run into the postseason.
Regarding the postseason, SCA will host the Boys Basketball District Tournament this March, which is a humbling and exciting opportunity. SCA Athletics is thankful God has blessed us with the Field House which allows us to be considered for these events. We can’t wait to “roll out the red carpet” for the players, coaches, and fans that will be participating. We want them to see Jesus in all we do.
As always, competitive excellence takes a back seat to our real purpose with SCA Athletics. Our teams continue to amaze in how they use their sport to represent Christ and make His name known. That will always be our purpose at SCA, and our coaches and athletes do a great job living that out during competition.
This year’s SCA Wrestlers have opened the season with three straight dual victories and a team championship at the Wyandotte Classic. Beyond that, they placed 2nd at Topeka Highland-Park and 3rd at the Raytown Invitational.
Sophomore Matthias McGregor (126lb.) leads the team with three tournament championships and a 15-0 record. He’s been totally dominant in all areas. Senior Gabe Harris (165lb.) is also having a great season with a 15-3 record and two 2nd place finishes in tournaments. Junior Dakota Cobb (190lb.) is 14-3 with a silver and two bronze medal performances. Junior Jack Brownlee (175lb.) is rolling along at 13-2 with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes in tournaments thus far. Freshman Garrett Gordon (106lb.) has earned two gold medals and one bronze on his way to an 11-1 record thus far. Junior Seth Stricklin (150lb.) is 14-4 to go along with his gold, silver, bronze medals so far. Junior Zach Butler (215lb.) is off to his best start with a 13-7 record and a 3rd place finish at Raytown. Freshman Caleb Chapman (138lb.) is 10-6 and has burst on the wrestling scene to earn a gold medal and a 4th place bronze. The roster is rounded out by Cade Stricklin, Noah Govro, Hayden Murphy, and Danny Pitts who have also won huge matches for the squad.

Early Education Performs in SCA Fieldhouse
For the first time, Early Education held their fall program, “We Are Thankful” in the SCA Fieldhouse. The children performed songs and poems as individual classes, as well as several songs and a Bible verse as a whole group. Mr. Thou Yang, SCA's Early Education through third grade music teacher, directed the children in their final song, “Thankful,” which was accompanied by a picture slideshow of the children. It was a beautiful time of thanksgiving and worship! We are so grateful for his heart for our youngest students!
This event came together through the investment of many, and we are so thankful to all of the parents who gave of
their time and talents to make our program special. We are a part of an incredible staff here at SCA including the technology, maintenance, and facilities teams who worked together to make the program a success. Our hearts are full!
Mr. Thou Yang directs "Thankful," the final song of the Early Ed fall performance.
Third Grade Christmas Program Brings Laughter and Joy
Friends and family enjoyed the Third Grade Christmas Program of beautiful carols and Scripture passages about Christ's birth read by students. The audience was invited to join the 76 student choir in singing carols, creating a large choir of voices in worship. Early Ed through third grade music teacher
Mr. Thou Yang conducted, and his wife Susan accompanied on the piano, while his daughter Celene played the cello. Mr. Yang arranged a very fun version of "Jingle Bells" which had the audience laughing! He also arranged "Mary Did You Know?" with featured soloists.
SCA Musicians Perform at Veterans' Memorial Dedication
The SCA high school brass ensemble and junior-senior ensemble were honored to perform at the John Knox Village Veterans' Memorial dedication on November 11. It was a powerful event for our students to see all the veterans and to hear stories about sacrifice for the freedoms they enjoy. It was particularly moving when the brass ensemble played a medley of the different branch hymns. When their song was played, the veterans in that branch stood. When JSE sang “God Bless the USA,” these precious veterans stood to their feet, some struggling to stand, when they sang, “ And I'd gladly stand up next to you, And defend Her still today. ‘Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, God Bless the U.S.A.”
The SCA brass ensemble (L-R) Braeden Carlson, Elijah Daivs, Jake Nicholson, Anderson Arroyo, and Jake Yates played at the Veterans' memorial dedication ceremony.

SCA Cappies Members Reviews
Published
SCA is a proud member of the KC Cappies, a theatre critique organization comprised of students from various metro area high schools. Each year, our critics review five to six performances at other local high schools. Reviews are submitted anonymously to the performance mentor, a teacher representative of one of the schools. Each performance is reviewed by 18-25 critics and three reviews are selected for publication and forwarded to local newspapers. Teams win points based on attendance and reviews selected for publication.
Our team's participation in reviewing shows qualifies SCA's high school productions, The Music Man and A Midsummer Night's Dream, to be nominated for awards that are announced at the Cappie Gala in late May. This year, our team has six members: seniors Emma Coats and George Hoelzel, juniors Abigail Gleason (lead critic) and Kailee Burke, sophomore Violet Darby, and freshman Junius Yancik. SCA has already reviewed two shows, Disney's Beauty and the Beast at Lee's Summit West and Little Shop of Horrors at Raytown High School, and two of our members have been selected for publishing. Congratulations to Kailee Burke for having her review of Lee's Summit West's show published and to Abigail Gleason for having both of her reviews selected for publication. We are looking forward to more great theatre and writing in 2025!
A merry band of men led by a vigilante in green will take the stage for the JH production of The Somewhat True Tale of Robin Hood. In this comedic retelling of the classic tale, Robin Hood’s battle for the heart of Lady Marian takes on a new spin which is sure to strike the audience with laughter. The Town’s Guy invites you to travel with him through Sherwood Forest January 23-25. Get your tickets at the door!

SCA Hosts Grandparents’ Day
SCA welcomed over 1,000 grandparents to campus at the ever-popular Grandparents’ Day. Grandparents and special friends were welcomed to the SCA Fieldhouse & Activity Center for a special program put on by Kindergarten - 12th grade students. All elementary students performed songs directed by their music teachers, and secondary band, orchestra, choral, and theatre students performed specials as well. The event concluded with a finale of all students and grandparents invited to join in singing “How Great Thou Art.”
SCA founding parent, former lunch lady, and current SCA grandmother Michell Hansen was the guest speaker at Grandparents’ Day, 2024. Michell is one of many grandparents in attendance who were initially SCA parents, but are now grandparents of second-generation Eagles as their SCAgraduate children have selected SCA for their children.
Seventh grade student Ellie Hawes and third grade student Evelyn Hawes enjoyed some extra time with their Grandparents after SCA Grandparents’ Day 2024.
International International Education Week Inspires Learning
SCA's International Education Week (IEW) provided an inspiring and enriching experience for students, celebrating cultures, languages, and people from around the globe. Our diverse school community is fortunate to include international students from China (Emma, Leo, Christine, Kevin, Amber, and Joe), Korea (John and Elizabeth), and Vietnam (Hannah).
Each day of IEW began with a prayer in a different language, offering students a unique opportunity to hear how people from various cultures pray to God in their native tongues. This year’s prayers featured languages such as Chinese, Portuguese, Hawaiian, Romanian, and Spanish. Many students expressed excitement and anticipation for the diverse languages shared throughout the week.
A key highlight of IEW was learning directly from our international students
about Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese cultures. These students visited over 22 classrooms, primarily in the elementary grades, to deliver engaging presentations. Returning students chose topics important to them including cultural traditions, pop culture, and famous inventions.
Kevin Chen, who spoke about prominent Chinese celebrities, shared, “I enjoyed giving speeches to the kids and sharing about Chinese culture.”
Emma Bao reflected, “Talking to the elementary kids was a highlight for me because I hadn’t had a chance to engage with them before. They asked great questions!”
Adding to the excitement, IEW featured fun lunch activities on Monday and Friday. Students participated in world trivia Kahoot quizzes, winning delicious prizes from countries across Asia and Latin America. An international scavenger hunt also offered
tasty global treats as rewards.
"IEW was an incredible opportunity for our international students to share their cultures and experiences from home," said Rocco DeFelice, International Program Director. "It reminds us of the rich and beautiful diversity in the world that God has created. I hope students gained a greater understanding of the world around them and developed a deeper appreciation for
different cultures, languages, and people.”
This year’s IEW was a vibrant celebration of diversity, connection, and learning, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.

This & That Cordell's Corner: MOScholars Program
Expanded - More SCA Students Will Qualify
The MOScholars program expansion, outlined in SB 727, will be effective for the 2025-2026 school year. It was signed into law by Governor Parsons in May, 2024. Key elements of the bill are as follows:
1. Expansion Statewide: One significant change is that now all students in the entire State of Missouri are potentially eligible for a MOScholars award. Many SCA parents reside in Cass County, which will now potentially allow for their participation.
2. Increased Scholarship Amounts: Reflecting the allocations for students in public schools, SB 727 introduces increased scholarship amounts. Under current laws, scholarships cannot exceed 100% of the state adequacy target, which is $6,760 for 2025-2026. The bill includes the following increases:
• Free and Reduced Lunch Qualifying Students: SB 727 increases the scholarship amount for students qualifying for free and reduced lunch up to 125% of the state adequacy target ($8,450 for 2025-2026).
• Limited English Proficiency Students: For students with limited English proficiency, the bill raises the scholarship amount up to 160% of the state adequacy target ($10,816 for 2025-2026).
• Students with an IEP: The bill also increases the scholarship amount for students with an Individualized Education
Program (IEP) up to 175% of the state adequacy target ($11,830 for 2025-2026).
3. Overall Cap Increase: SB 727 raises the program’s overall cap from $50 million to $75 million, allowing for more students to benefit from the program.
Cordell Dick Director of Access & Affordability
4. Income Eligibility Raise: The bill raises the income eligibility from 200% to 300% of the free and reduced lunch rate, expanding access to the MOScholars program for more families. See the Household Income Qualification Chart for 2025-2026 (below).
5. Expanded Eligibility for Dyslexia: SB 727 expands eligibility to include these students, ensuring they have access to the support they need.
6. Sibling Priority: Siblings of current students who qualify for scholarships will automatically qualify. The bill also prioritizes siblings before new recipients, ensuring that qualified siblings of current scholarship recipients have an improved chance of receiving the scholarship.
If you have questions related to this article or other tuition assistance related questions, please contact Cordell Dick at 816.525.1480 or email cordelld@sca-kc.org.
