SCA Sets Date to Open New Fieldhouse & Activity Center
SCA recently announced that a grand opening, prayer dedication, ribbon cutting, and celebration of the new Fieldhouse & Activity Center will be held from 8:45-9:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 9. The Fieldhouse & Activity Center is 43,000 ft² and includes an official NCAA sized gymnasium that seats 1200, locker rooms, a strength and conditioning room, a multipurpose room, a concession stand, restrooms, and athletic offices.

Since 1989, SCA has been inspiring students to achieve their God-given potential through excellent academics and Christian training in a compassionate environment. Enrollment has grown steadily for the past decade, and current enrollment is at a historic high with over 1200 early education12th grade students. The addition of the SCA Fieldhouse & Activity Center will allow the entire SCA community to gather together and provide students with increased athletic opportunities and enrichment activities.

“As I have shared over the last year during the construction of this new facility, it is not the building, but what is built inside the building that matters,” shared SCA Head of School Chris Hahn. “Lives and hearts can be transformed for Christ, and heaven can get bigger if we have the space and facilities where we can all come together! I am excited for what God plans to do in this new space.”
The first event in the new space will be the SCA Blue Bash, an exciting night of basketball against the Barstow Knights on Tuesday, February 7. Games will begin at 4 p.m. The SCA student body and families, grandparents and alumni are invited to be part of this historic athletic event.
“We are looking forward to hosting two big events the first week we open the doors of the Fieldhouse & Activity Center,” shared Mr. Hahn. “The SCA Blue Bash on Tuesday, February 7, for all of our families and then our official Ribbon Cutting event on Thursday, February 9, at 8:45 a.m.”
Spiritual Elementary Food Drive Supports Kansas City Families
Elementary students united to give almost 10,000 food items and paper goods to bless families with a meal for Thanksgiving this year through their annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. One of the core values of SCA is to Cultivate Community, and the food drive helps students understand the importance of serving the community.
Sixth graders wrote encouraging notes, packed boxes, and loaded them onto trucks to transport the food to Courageous Life Church in Independence, Hearts and Hands in Belton, and Victory in His Presence in Kansas City. The items were distributed

families for Thanksgiving.
“We are praying for the families to have the opportunity to hear the Gospel along with their physical needs being met,” shared Lower Elementary Principal Charissa Sanders. “So many people will be blessed!”
The students exceeded their overall goal of collecting 8,000 items, as the week ended with 9,952 items donated.
Elementary Christian Character Awards Announced
SCA is pleased to recognize students who consistently exhibit exceptional Christian character through the Christian Character Award program. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to pursue their potential toward attaining the highest level of personal and academic development as well as Christian character. Receiving the Christian Character Award is one of the most prestigious recognitions within the school.
Elementary recipients for first quarter were second grade student Luke Eagleburger and fifth grade student Casey Rinn.

Academics SCA Ranks #1 in the Kansas City Area For Top Private Schools
Summit Christian Academy has been ranked first in the Kansas City metro area private schools list by the Kansas City Business Journal, up from last year when they were ranked second. This is the ninth consecutive year that SCA has been ranked as a top five private school in the Kansas

City metropolitan area.
The Kansas City Business Journal’s annual compilation of private schools, The List, determines school rankings based on fall enrollment figures submitted from each institution. Various other characteristics are also noted, including student to teacher
ratio, tuition, and academic curriculum.
"Moving to the top of the list has been a goal for many for a long time,” shared SCA Head of School Mr. Chris Hahn. “We are excited to celebrate our increase in enrollment, but also remember each number represents a child of God being
Message from SCA Head of School

Summit Christian Academy to hire a “DI3”
nurtured and encouraged in their walk with Jesus. We continue to pray that because of what happens on our campus, through God's grace and His Spirit, HEAVEN GETS BIGGER, and students are equipped and prepared both spiritually and academically for what God has next for them."
A “DI” what? The SCA Board of Education has approved a new position for the 2023-2024 school year titled the Dean of Improvement, Integration, and Innovation, or “DI3.” Applications are currently being accepted.
As a ministry committed to continuous improvement, and one that recognizes the most important factor in student achievement and success are the teachers, the Board of Education desires to expand the School Leadership Team to include this ‘coach and champion of teachers’ position.
The DI3 will report directly to the Head of School, while working closely with division level principals. The DI3 will collaborate with the faculty in the school-wide development of growth plans in the areas of spiritual and professional development. Additional areas of focus will include collaborating with principals and faculty on curriculum review and alignment, enhancing upon intentional biblical integration across the curriculum, as well as discovering and implementing instructional and classroom innovation.
I believe SCA will be as good as the teachers, mentors, and coaches working with our children and families. For our teachers to instruct and minister to your children, SCA needs to invest in and care for them!

Senior Takes Second in Veterans of Foreign War Essay Competition
Senior Emma Miller-Fox took second place in an essay competition for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Voice of Democracy scholarship program for Post 5789.

After studying about periods of French art including Impressionism, students from French 3 and 4 classes went to an immersive art experience called "Monet and Friends." They read about each artist featured and had a picture taken on Monet's Japanese bridge.

Students had the opportunity to watch the exhibition set to classical music to learn more about how the artists viewed their art and how they used light and colors to capture every day moments in life and nature.
Afterwards, students enjoyed crêpes at Chez Elle, a crêperie in downtown Kansas City. C'était magnifique!
Spelling Bee Winners Recognized
More than 50 students in grades 2-8 participated in SCA's annual spelling bee. SCA is proud of the hard work and achievements of the spelling bee participants.
Three students emerged victorious. Third place went to 5th grader Kate Bowerman, second place went to 2nd grader Isabella Carvalho, and the 2022 Spelling Bee Champion was 4th grader Joey Soule.

L-R:
The Voice of Democracy is the VFW’s premier scholarship program and nearly 25,000 high school students from across the country compete for more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives each year. Students in 9-12 grades compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. The theme for the essay this year was, “Why is the Veteran Important?”
Emma and her family are invited to a Patriotic Recognition Ceremony where she will receive her award and be invited to read her winning entry publicly.
Athletics Winter Sports Having Record Seasons
by Lance Quessenberry, Athletic Director
This time of the year is always a lot of fun. Our winter sports have completed a large part of their schedules, and we have enjoyed seeing them develop into the teams they can become.
Girls' Swim has seen a record number of swimmers come out this year. Under Coach Welch’s leadership, the girls are starting to become more competitive individually and as a team. Several swimmers have finished within the top three in their events. As a result, the team’s success has begun to grow as they are starting to become competitive in most meets. It has been fun to watch this program grow since it began four seasons ago.
Coach Thomas and the wrestling team have seen a similar story unfold. They also have a record number of participants, and a lot of success has followed. In the
past few years, SCA has had outstanding individual performances by several of our wrestlers but have not had the showing they wanted as a team. That has changed this year. Not only are they continuing to perform well as individuals, but the team results have improved in each tournament in which they compete. Watch for this team in the postseason as they promise to deliver some exciting results.
The Girls' Basketball team has had a great start this year. Their record currently stands at 7-2, which ranks as the best start in SCA Girls' Basketball program history. They finished 3rd in the Eagle Invitational and competed in the always-challenging Pleasant Hill Tournament. Coach Neal is doing a great job building a foundation that will help our girls program grow and continue to improve.
Finally, Boys' Basketball has mirrored the girls in that they have also had an
Varsity boys’ soccer finished their postseason run with a second place finish at the state championship game on Saturday, November 19 after winning the Class 1 state quarterfinals against New Covenant Academy 3-1. The team lost by one goal to St. Francis Borgia in the Class 1 championship. The goal was scored at the 77:50 minute mark into the left lower corner by St. Francis Borgia’s Adam Rickman.
outstanding start. Their 8-1 record is the best start since the 2016-17 Eagles went 11-1 to start their season. They finished 2nd in the Eagle Invitational and also competed in the Pleasant Hill Tournament. Coach Truesdale has the team playing well in his first year at SCA as he looks to build the culture of the program.
As always, the competitive excellence takes a back seat to our real purpose with SCA Athletics. Our teams continue to amaze me in how they use the sport they love to represent Christ and make His name known. That will always be our purpose at SCA, and our coaches and athletes do a great job living that out during competition.
“What a season,” shared Varsity Soccer Coach Brad Creason. “I knew we had a chance to do something special this season, but we had to buy into our team motto of 'we over me.' As the season progressed, we truly started playing for the team over the individual while doing our best to continually honor God with our actions on the field. After ten previous trips to the district championship game in the last 15 years, we finally won a district championship for the first time in program history. After reaching that goal, we went to the state final four and left everything on the field while taking second place at state. I'm so proud of these players and the season they had this year.”

Girls' Varsity Cross Country Finishes 3rd at State Meet
The Varsity girls’ cross country team finished their postseason run at the state meet on Saturday, November 5 after winning the Class 3 District 4 title the week before.
The team finished third
overall in Class 3 after being bumped up from Class 2, where they placed second in 2021.
The team combined score was 167. They followed St. Charles West High School with 74 points in first and Centralia
High School with 137 points. All seven girls have been solid all year and they are a great team on and off the course,” shared Varsity Cross Country Head Coach Rick McGregor. “They are more than just
teammates, they are also close friends and enjoy so much of their lives together. After a close district race, I wasn't sure they could finish in the top four at the state meet. It was a cold, windy, and wet day but they

Athletics Varsity Wrestling in Midst of Strong Season
Varsity wrestling is off to a very good start, despite a few key injuries. Senior Jeramiah "Frog" Smith (157 lb), who placed 4th in state competition last year, leads the team with a 16-3 record. He's been in the finals of all tournaments thus far and leads the team with 149 takedowns.
Other standout athletes on the roster include Junior John Newton (175 lb) who is second on the team in several categories and has an 11-2 record. He has a Raytown South Championship to go along with many dominant performances. Sophomore Ben Winters (285 lb) has been a very pleasant surprise with a 14-6 record and several excellent performances. Freshman Jack Brownlee (165 lb) has hit the ground running as he has a 13-6 record with five Spladles already. Finally, we're hoping Senior Memphis Hinton (138 lb) will return soon from an injury for a final run at state in February. The coaching staff is very pleased with the progress and efforts of our athletes! We always need a few more athletes, so don't hesitate to plan now to wrestle next year!

Cross Country continued from page 5 were ready and determined to be their very best. All year we have talked about finishing the course and being a fighter until the very end. They kept fighting until they crossed the finish line at the state championship at Gans Creek. They have been so consistent all year and that Saturday was no exception. Our team battled through the cold and rainy conditions to get to the trophy stand and cheer, ‘God is good!’ This was really big for our team. Last year we finished second in Class 2 and we knew we were going to get bumped to Class 3. These girls stepped up their game. Our team was just as competitive with the bigger Class 3 schools, and I am proud of how they finished.”

Fine Arts Third Grade Musical Performance Amazing

SCA third grade students shared an amazing musical performance, The Christmas County Spelling Bee. The musical story was about a town who held a spelling bee as a way to choose their characters for the Nativity. During the spelling bee, student contestants spelled some of the many names of God. There was a cast of 18, and a choir of 70 students who did an amazing job performing all ten songs— and more importantly, proclaiming Christ as the true meaning of Christmas!

International SCA Celebrates International Education Week

SCA’s International Education Week (IEW) was a tremendous time for students to learn and focus on cultures, languages, and people from around the world. Our school community is not only blessed to to have international students Vega Gastaldo and Emma Bao, from Spain and China respectively, but to also have Spanish, Chinese, Romanian, French, and Haitian Creole speakers. IEW started off each morning with a prayer in a foreign language, which was an exciting opportunity for students to hear how different countries pray to God in their own language. Students commented that they were excited to hear their classmates praying in a different language and looked forward to what other languages they would hear throughout the week.
Another exciting aspect of IEW was learning about different cultures and their uniqueness. Vega and Emma were able to share about their country and what life is like at home.
“The best thing about IEW was the opportunity to share more things about my life in Spain and my experiences here so far,” shared Gastaldo.
“The most amazing thing for me about IEW was sharing the Chinese culture with my classmates, helping them learn more about China, and also, answering student’s questions,” Bao.
Students were able to ask a wide variety of questions that led to class discussions. Since Vega and Emma were able to present in Spanish and Chinese classes, students were challenged to ask questions in those languages.

The Interactive Museum was another way for students to engage in IEW. Placed throughout the secondary building were 14 posters that had a different country of focus; i.e., Japan, Mali, Australia, and Poland. Students used a map and their phones to find the posters and scan the QR codes to watch a video and answer questions. “It was exciting to see students working together to find the posters and engage in learning in an interactive and fun way,” said International Program Director Rocco DeFelice. “My hope is that students learned a little bit more about the world around them and have gained a deeper appreciation for different cultures, languages, and people.”

This & That SCA honors Long-standing Tradition by Writing Scripture in the Fieldhouse & Activity Center

The tradition of writing scripture on the floor of buildings that are built across the campus is a long-standing tradition at SCA. It started on the Elementary Commons floor when SCA built the Elementary Commons addition in 2000. For this most recent project, students from preschool to 12th grade had the opportunity to sign their name and write scripture on the floor of the Fieldhouse and Activity Center! We pledge to stand firm on God’s Word as Christ is the cornerstone of our school.

SCA alumni were invited to be the first to sign the floor at the VIP Fieldhouse tour of the construction site. Over 20 current SCA students are second-generation Eagles, as one (or both) of their parents graduated from SCA! SCA 2006 graduate Kirk Nungester and his wife and children who are current SCA students were among the first to sign the floor.

“Our family is very excited about the upcoming completion of the Fieldhouse,” shared Kirk. “It’s been amazing to see the facilities grow since I graduated from SCA in 2006. We chose to put our kids in SCA for their ongoing commitment to excellence in everything they do—spiritual development, academics and athletics. We can not wait to watch our kids perform in the Fieldhouse and are grateful we had the opportunity to put their handprints and a verse of dedication on the floor.”

The mission of Summit Christian Academy is to inspire students to achieve their God-given potential through excellent academics and Christian training in a compassionate environment.
