Course Objectives TheobjectivesoftheSCAChoralProgramareto:

Attendance Policy Rehearsalsareaunique,combinedgroupphenomenonthatcannotberecreated.Similarly, theperformanceisthesolepurposeofrehearsalsandparticipationisaclassrequirement. Regularattendanceiscriticaltothesuccessoftheindividualintheclassaswellasthe ensembleitself.Thefollowingstipulationsapply:
1. Rehearsals
a. Rehearsalscannotbemadeup! After5absencesinonesemester,thefollowing criteriaapply:
i. Astudentmustsetupanoutsiderehearsalplanwiththeteachertomakeup participationpointsinanyconsecutiveabsences.Therehearsalplanwillbebasedupon thechoirtheyareinandthemediaavailabilityforrehearsal.
ii.Ifastudentdoesnotsetthisplanup,ordoesnotfollowtheplanandsubmit rehearsallogs,theywilllose5participationpointsfortherehearsalperiodinwhichthey areabsent.
b.Tardiness:Policiescurrentlydocumentedinthestudenthandbookwillapplytochoral rehearsals.Inaddition,arrivinglatetoclasswillimpacttheotherelementsofthe student’scompositegrade.
2. Performances
a. Weight:Performancescountas100%oftheattendancegrade.
b.Scheduling:Allmajorperformancesarelistedintheschoolcalendarandinthebackof thishandbook.Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoadapttheirschedulestothe calendartoeliminateconflictswithperformancedates.Additionalperformances maybescheduledormoved,generallywith6weeks’notice.
c. DressRehearsals:Duringthedayofaperformance,thereisa“dressrehearsal”time scheduledduringtheschoolday.Itisnormallytheclassperiodyourstudenthastheir choirhour.However,thisisnotalwayspossiblewithchoirssplitintotwoperiodsor specialoccasions.Itisthestudents’responsibilitytoattendthatrehearsal(s).Therewill bean11pointreductionintheconcertgradeifastudenthasanunexcusedabsencefor their“dressrehearsal”.Pleaserefertothefollowinglistsofexcusedorunexcused absencesforalist.
d.ExcusedAbsences:Intheeventthatastudentisexcusedfromaperformance,the attendancepointswillnotbeappliedagainsttheattendancegradeifamake-up assignmentiscompletedwithintwoweeksofthemissedperformance(make-up assignmentswillbedeterminedbythedirector).Thefollowingspecialcircumstances qualifyforanexcusedabsencefromaperformance:
● Prolongedillnessrequiringthecareofaphysician.
● Illnessthatpreventsastudentfromattendingschoolthedayoftheperformanceor thedayafteraperformance.Studentswillnotbeexcusedfromaperformanceifthey attendschoolthedayofandthedayafteraperformance.
● Familyemergencies,accidents,orsuddenillness.ContactMrs.Hooverassoonas possibletogivenoticeoftheabsence!
e. UnexcusedAbsences:Anyabsencethatisnotlistedinthecircumstancesthatqualify asexcusedwill,bydefinition,beconsideredunexcusedandwillresultinazerograde forthatperformance.Unexcusedabsenceswillnotqualifyforamake-upassignment. Thispolicyincludes,butisnotlimitedto,thefollowingevents:

● Familyvacation

f. MSHSAAAttendancePolicyforPerformances:Studentsmustattendatleastahalf day(4classperiods)thedayofaconcerttoperform,asthatisaMSHSAArequirement andSCAschoolpolicy.
1. Attitude
Behavior, Attitude, and Contribution Thisisthesinglemostimportantelementinthebehaviorportionofthestudent’sgrade. Astudent’sattitudeisreflectedinbodylanguageandattentivenessaswellasin adherencetorehearsalprocedures.Attitudeismostapparentinastudent’sfacial expression.Facialexpressionswillnotonlygiveastudentbettertoneandclearer diction,itwillhelpputmoreemotionandexpressioninthemusic.
2. EffortandRespect
Studentsarerequiredtostrivefortheirbestindividualperformanceseachday.Itis expectedthatthestudentsdemonstrateproperrehearsaldecorumatalltimesandtogive appropriateconsiderationandrespecttotheirpeers,theirinstructor,andaccompanist.
3. RehearsalRules
a. Talking:Oncerehearsalofapieceofmusichasbegun,onlytheconductorand accompanistmaytalk.Rehearsalsmustmovequicklyandstudentscannotaffordto missasingledirection.Allquestionsshouldbedirectedtotheconductor.
b. Posture:Wheneverstudentsareaskedtosinginrehearsal,whethersittingor standing,theymustassumethecorrectposture.Ifyouarenotusingcorrectposture, youarenotsingingcorrectly!Improperpostureaffectsyourabilitytomakeaproper soundandreflectspoorattitude,diminishingyourabilitytoconcentrate.
c. Notsinging:Wheneverasectionisnotsinging,studentsmayrelaxandsit comfortablytowardthebackoftheirchair.Thistimeistobeusedinthequietstudy ofthescorebymemorizingwords,mentallyreviewingthepart,andlisteningto becomeawareoftheothervocalparts.Talkingisnotallowed!
d. Food,Beverages,andGum:Studentsarenotallowedtobringcandy,foodordrinks intothechoralmusicclassroom,withtheexceptionofwaterinclearplastic containerswithlids.Gumchewingpreventsproperuseofthevocalmechanismandis notallowed.
e. CellPhones/Electronics:AsstatedintheStudentHandbook,cellphones/iPods,etc., arenottobeintheclassroomatanytime.Allnonschool-relatedelectronicdevices seenduringclasswillbeconfiscatedandadetentionwillimmediatelybeissuedtothe student.
4. DisciplinaryAction Ifastudentdoesnotcomplywiththestatedrehearsaland/orclassroompolicies,along withanyotherpoliciesstatedintheSCAHandbook,thefollowingstepswillbetaken:

1. VocalEvaluation
Tests and Assignments Studentswillbetestedeachsemesterinasmallgroupsetting,suchasamixedquartetor trio,sothedirectormayhaveabetterideaofanindividual’smusicalcontributionto dailyrehearsals.Studentswillbeexpectedtosingaportionofmusicthatisbeing workedoninclass.Thetotalnumberofpointsastudentcanearnpertestis25.(Jr.High studentswillnotbeexpectedtosingaloneontheirpart.)
2. MusicTheoryandHistory
Inadditiontostudyingpropervocaltechniques,thestudentswillhaveopportunitiesto learnaboutmusicalterminology,conceptsofsight-singing,andlearnthehistorical backgroundtothemusicperformed.Therewillbeperiodicquizzes,assignments,or testsgiventoevaluatethestudent’smasteryoftheseelementsofmusic.Inaddition, eachchoralmusicstudentwillreceiveasubscriptiontoSightReadingFactory(an onlinesightreadingtool)andbeassignedassessmentsperiodicallyduringtheyearfor completion.
3. ConcertObservation(ConcertChoraleandHighSchoolChoironly)
Studentswillberequiredtoattendonechoralconcertpersemesterandturnina one-pagereportontheirobservations.Theseobservationswillbeworth60points.
4. ChoralConducting(ConcertChoraleonly)
Studentswillberequiredtolearnatleasttwoconductingpatternsandconductapieceof musicliveduringclassduringthe2nd semester.Thetotalnumberofpointsastudentcan earnpertestis25.
Curriculum and Materials 1. SCApurchasesmusicfromvariouscomposers/publisherstobeissuedtoeachstudent thatmustbereturnedtotheschoolbeforetheendoftheschoolyear.Studentswillbe financiallyresponsibleforanymusiclostordestroyed.
2. Eachstudentmustsupplytheirownsharpenedpencilwitheraser,whichtheyare requiredtohavewiththemforeveryclassperiod.
3. StudentswilluseiPadsorChromebooksthroughouttheyearforat-homeperformance testing,variousresearchprojects,andindividualizedpractice.Studentsmusthavea devicethatcanbeusedforrecordingpurposesofassignmentssuchasSight ReadingFactoryandrecordedsingtests.Studentswillbenotifiedatleastonedayin advanceiftheywillneedtheirdevicesand/orearbudsduringaparticularclassperiod.
Concert Attire Choirmembersareresponsibleforthepurchaseoftheirownconcertattire.Itemsneeded purchaseddirectlyfromFormalFashionswillbeorderedwithinthefirsttwoweeksofschool.

MSHSAA Eligibility BeforeastudentcanparticipateinaFineArtsprogramatSCA,he/shemustmeetthefollowing requirements:
1. Thestudentmustbeacademicallyeligible(seeacademicrequirementslistedbelow).
2. ThestudentandparentsmustaccessthePRIVITlink,complete,read,agreetoandsign allonlinedocuments.
3. Theparentsmustattendtheprogram’srequiredparentmeetingorsignoffthatthey viewedthevideomeeting.
MSHSAAAcademicEligibility Forastudenttobeeligibletoparticipateinhighschoolchoirs,band,strings,andspeech/debate, MSHSAAhasestablishedthefollowingrequirementsforfulltimestudents.
1. Ifastudentdoesnotearn3.0unitsofcreditorearncreditin80%ofthemaximum allowableclassesinwhichastudentcanbeenrolledinthesemester,whicheverisgreater, thestudentwouldbeineligiblefortheentirefollowingsemester.AtSCA,thismeansa studentmustpass7outof8classesintheprevioussemester.
2. Ifastudentisnotenrolledinandregularlyattendingclassesthatoffer3.0unitsofcredit or80%ofthemaximumallowablecreditswhichmaybeearnedinthatsemester,thenthe studentwouldbeineligibleforthatsemester.AtSCA,thismeansastudentmustbe enrolledinatleast7outof8classesinthesemesterofparticipation.
3. Specialeducationstudentsmustbemakingstandardprogressforhis/herlevelthe precedingsemesterinaspecialeducationprogramforthehandicappedapprovedbythe MissouriStateDepartmentofEducation.He/shemustalsobeenrolledinafullcourseat his/herlevelinsaidspecialeducationprogram
Thefollowingrequirementsapplyforpart-timestudents.
1. Studentsmustbeenrolledinatleasttwoon-campusclasses.
2. WhenastudentwhohasnothadanyconnectiontoSCAinitiallyapplies,twodifferent areasmustbereviewedandconfirmedbeforethestudentisabletorepresentSCAin MSHSAAcompetitions.
a. Academiccreditforthepriorfullsemesterhastobeconfirmedandaccepted.For thistohappen,astudentmusthaveearnedaminimumof3.5creditsorhave earnedcreditin80%ofthemaximumallowableclassesinwhichastudentcanbe enrolledinthesemester,whicheverisgreater.
b. AllpreviouslytakencoursesmustbeaddedtotheSCAtranscript.Tobeadded, coursesmustmeetcriterionofSCAcourses(i.e.,befromanaccreditedbody and/ortaughtbycertifiedpersonnel,meethoursp/Carnegiemeasure,belistedin SCACourseDescriptionGuide,orbeapprovedviatheacademicdeanbasedon previouslistedcriterion).
3. Part-timestudentsmustprovideSCAwithverificationofallcoursescompleted. (DocumentationshouldincludetrackedhoursfromanaccreditedprogramORavirtual transcript.)
4. InadditiontofollowingMSHSAAacademicsemesterrequirements,SCAstudentsmust alsomeetgradecheckrequirements.GradesshouldreflectnoF'sORnomorethanoneD inallcoursesinordertoparticipateinMSHSAAcompetitions.
5. Attheendofeachsemester,theschooladvisorwillconfirmstudentsarecontinuingin eligiblecoursesforthenextsemesterandwillalsoconfirmallprevioussemestercourses werepassed.Thesecourseswillthenbeaddedtothetranscript.
6. A$35.00transcriptingfeewillapplyperyear.Thisfeewillbechargeduponenrollment andisnon-refundable.
7. SCAwillprovideatranscriptthatincludesallSCAandtransferredapprovedcourses. CoursestransferredintoSCAwillbeplacedinparenthesisonthetranscript.
IfastudentisineligibleduetoMSHSAAregulations,thenhe/shemaynotcontinuetobeapart ofaFineArtsprogramatSCAuntiltheyhavemettheMSHSAAeligibilityrequirements.
ExemptionforStudentsEarningCollegeCredit Astudentwhoisdualenrolledincollegeclassesbeingtakenoffcampuswithcreditbeingplaced onthehighschooltranscriptandhighschoolclassesmayonlycountuptoonefullcreditearned fromthecollegeclassestowardacademiceligibilityandmustbeenrolledinandregularly attendingtheremainderofclassesatthehighschool.Directors/DebateCoachmaycontactthe AcademicAdvisoriftheyhaveanyquestionsregardingthispolicy.
SCAAcademicEligibility ForastudenttobeeligibletoparticipateincompetingFineArtsprogramsatSCAhe/shemust remaineligible.InadditiontothoseestablishedbyMSHSAA(seeabove),thefollowing circumstanceswouldmakeastudentineligible.
1. Ifatanygradecheckastudenthasacumulativesemestergradeof59%orbelowinany class,he/shewouldbeineligiblefortwoweeks,andthenmeetalleligibilityrequirements atthattime.
2. Ifatanygradecheckastudenthasacumulativesemestergradeof69%-60%inanytwo classes,he/shewouldbeineligiblefortwoweeks,andthenmeetalleligibility requirementsatthattime.
3. Allgradesresetattheendofeachsemester.StudentsmustmeetallMSHSAA requirementsasstatedearlieratthebeginningofeachsemesterinordertoparticipate.

The Pops Dinner and Concert Event ThisisalongstandingtraditionatSCAfortheChoralDepartment.Thiseventhappensin FebruaryisafundraisingeventforthechoirprogramsatSCA.Thechoirhostsadinnerand concert!Thestudentsworkinallareasofservingattheevent.Ticketsaresoldandrequiredfor entryintotheevent.ThemoneyraisedisusedforourchoirtriptoNewYorkCitytosingin CarnegieHall,whichhappenseveryfouryears.Thisallowsforeachchoirstudenttogoona choirtripsometimethroughouttheirhighschoolyears.Thenextscheduledtripisin1school year,2026.

SCA Choir Recognitions FINEARTSSTATEWALKS StateWalksareanopportunitytorecognizestudentswho,throughcompetitionor audition,haveearnedtherighttocompeteorparticipateatthehighestlevelavailable. Forexample,theMSHSAAsolo/ensemblefestivalheldinColumbiaintheSpring;any MissouriAll-Stateensemble(Choir,Band,Orchestra);theNationalSpeechandDebate Tournament,andBlueStarnomineesfortheatrestudents.StateWalkswilloccurduring thelastfiveminutesoftheschooldayimmediatelyprecedingthestudent/s’departure forthestatecompetition,unlessotherarrangementsarenecessary.TheStateWalkwill consistofanystudentswhohavequalifiedtocompeteorparticipateatthestatelevel alongwiththeirteacher/coachwalkingthroughthehallwaysofthesecondarybuilding whileallotherstudentsaregiventheopportunitytojointheminthehallwaytocheer andcelebratetheirstateaccomplishments.TheStateWalkwillbebroadcastedthrough SCAsocialmediaoutletsandapressreleaseissued.
Dual Activities within SCA WhenaStudentchoosestoparticipateinmorethanoneactivityinaseason,althoughevery effortismadetoavoidit,conflictsintheschedulewilloccur.Itisimportantthattheseconflicts beresolvedwithopencommunicationbetweentheStudent,Coach/Director,andActivities Director.TheaffectedpartiesshouldworktogethertoresolvetheconflictwiththeStudent’sbest interestastheprimaryfocus.ThepurposeoftheseguidelinesistoaidtheStudent, Coach/Director,andtheActivitiesDirectorinresolvingtheseconflictsaheadoftimesothey don’tbecomeanissuelater.CoachesandDirectorsshouldmeetwithandcommunicatetothe Studenttheirresponsibilitiesregardingpractices,performances,andcompetitionspriortothe athleticseasonorco-curricularactivity.Withthatinmind,thefollowingshouldbeconsidered... -TheCoach,Director,andActivitiesDirectorshouldinvestigatepriortothestartofeachseason anypotentialconflictsthatmightoccur.Carefulattentionshouldbegiventothemembers involvedinmultipleactivitiesthathaveconcurrentactivities.
