Pivoting, Partnership, and Provision for His Purpose

by SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson bout nine years ago, I attended a conference at Monte Vista Christian School in California where they shared the importance of moving forward with a one-to-one initiative for students at the high school level. When I returned to SCA, we formed a team to put into place a one-to-one initiative that was rolled out nine months later.

Since that time, SCA has continued integrating technology into the classroom. A few years ago, an SCA leadership team visited one of the largest online universities in the nation, Grand Canyon University (GCU). They shared important and critical best practices about online education. SCA then began assembling the tools and technology necessary to launch virtual classes. Last summer, we purchased Canvas for 9-12th grade students and worked to train faculty and students in utilizing this platform for the classroom. It was so successful that we did some work with 7th and 8th grade classes as well. We also worked in elementary to integrate virtual PE/workout classes and virtual classwork.

As pandemic shelter-in-place orders were issued in mid-March, it became obvious to us that God had for many years been laying the groundwork of Provision and Purpose for His school.

The Pivot While students and families were enjoying spring break, the board and administrative team met to formulate plans to keep families safe during this volatile time. Those plans also included continuing to provide students with an excellent education.

Due to the groundwork that God had done over the past several years, the school was able to pivot from the traditional classroom format to a virtual classroom model.

Partnership At every new family tour, we share SCA’s philosophy of partnership. The excellent partnership between the school and parents has played a key role in the success of eCampus. The commitment of early education through 12th

grade students and parents to partner with SCA teachers and administration has been instrumental in maintaining SCA’s high academic standards. We value your partnership!

Provision for His Purpose In my 20+ years as SCA Head of School, I can assuredly say that the events of the last two months are unprecedented. Every element of the school has been impacted—from academics, to athletics, to social events. While the world around us has been shaken, we have not! We have witnessed firsthand God’s hand of provision through it all. SCA leaders, teachers, students, and parents have united to continue implementing God’s plan and purpose for His school. As I reflect on recent events, I think about how fitting this year’s “Called for a Purpose” theme verse is, “But I have raised you up for THIS very purpose, that I might SHOW you my POWER and that my name might be PROCLAIMED in all the earth” (Exodus 9:16). I firmly believe that God’s provision for His school has allowed each of us to fulfill His Purpose and to inspire, and continue inspiring, the next generation for His Purpose for their lives.

Elementary Chapel - Stay Strong and Declare Him Boldly

by Elementary Principal Charissa Sanders “Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” (Ephesians 6:19-20) In just a short time, summer break will arrive after an unimaginable 4th quarter for the 2019-20 school year. I want to personally thank all of you. Parents, as

you stepped in suddenly to facilitate and lead your child’s learning during a most difficult and unusual time. As we step into the summer months, there are still many unknowns. Will there be summer vacations? Will the local pools be open?

Will we get to have play dates with friends?

Will we get to go back to our physical church soon? Despite the uncertainty, my prayer is that you, our students and families, will carry the certainty of

their Savior Jesus Christ. He is the same “yesterday, today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). It may very well be that now more than ever, those around us are looking at those who follow Jesus to see how we are living. This is our chance to reflect Christ! Let’s share Christ boldly! 1 Peter 3:15 tells us to “always be ready to explain our Christian hope to others.” Let’s begin praying now for those opportunities.

Elementary Christian Char acter Awards Announced SCA is pleased to recognize students who consistently exhibit exceptional Christian character through the Christian Character program. The purpose of this award is to encourage students to pursue their potential toward attaining the highest level of personal and academic development.

The elementary school’s Christian Character Award recipients for third quarter are second grade student Collin Haulotte, son of Kyle and Lindy Haulotte; and fifth grade student Maddie Dyer, daughter of Daniel and Mallory Dyer. Collin and Maddie were acknowledged during SCA’s eCampus virtual chapel service.

“Congratulations to these two outstanding students,” shared Elementary Principal Charissa Sanders. “God has wonderful things in store for you! We miss you and wish we could have handed these awards to you in person!”

Message from your Head of School Dear SCA Families, As I reflect on this most unusual end to our 2019-20 school year, I cannot help but be grateful. I’m grateful for you, our school families, and how flexible you’ve been in our pivot to eCampus. I Linda Harrelson am grateful to our faculty who was up for the challenge and embraced a new way of teaching. While we look forward to the time when we’re all together again, I’m confident that God will use this stay-at-home experience in a positive way in all our lives. I’ve heard so many great stories about the reestablishment of family meals and board game nights. Perhaps, this time to breathe has also given us

more time to spend with Him! For any of you who are feeling the financial squeeze, please know that we do have tuition assistance available for those who qualify. eCampus: E is for Engaged With a virtual board meeting the Saturday after spring break, SCA administration was given a green light to shift curriculum from the bricks and mortar delivery system to online education. As design ensued, critical to the heart of SCA, and the hearts of every teacher was the idea that eCampus would be engaging. Face-to-face conversation, inspiring delivery of objectives, and prioritization of grace became the essential elements of courses from early education through 12th grade.

Every teacher was creative in seeking ways to keep the student connection going. At the secondary level, teachers were given freedom to discern how much they should meet with students above a minimum of once a week. Quickly there were decisions made to meet anywhere from five times a week as a whole group, meeting once a week as an entire group, and accompanying small group or even 1:1 meetings to encourage deeper discussion and understanding.

Preschool and elementary met both as classes and as small groups to support various objectives in reading, Bible, and math. Teachers became creative in finding ways to informally encourage students, utilizing apps such as Marco Polo or Google Hangouts for pet parades before math lecture. Time and again, teachers have expressed joy in the special connection that this difficult life season has afforded. Home tours, heart to heart discussion, and time to just giggle over snacks and

With the flurry of preparation in the week after spring break, teachers worked hard to ensure material access would be inspiring, organized, and easily accessible. With EE-3rd grade, teachers used an administratively-developed home agenda that contained embedded links. These links went to things such as cool new websites, videos of recorded teacher lectures, Google Earth tours, YouTube, and Leaders are Readers videos—developed from volunteering leaders around the community. Moms and dads were provided times for class or individual meetings, which they often were able to observe! Parents submitted work as was easiest for them: scanning or pictures taken and emailed to teachers.

In grades 4-6, teachers used Google classroom to provide electronic lesson submission and an agenda that students could easily follow and complete without a lot of oversight. They, too, used links for all of the above, but also included Quizlet, Cahoot, and group meeting links for students to engage in F & F discussions and devotions.

Grades 7-12 used Canvas, “the most usable, customizable, adaptable, and reliable learning platform (think 99.9% uptime)—makes all the difference when it comes to campus-wide LMS adoption. That’s why Canvas is adopted faster and deeper

(or, is used in more ways by more users) than any other LMS” (G2 website, 11 November 2020). SCA adopted Canvas for 9-12 in August 2019. It quickly became popular among teachers, and in January, several junior high teachers asked to move all courses onto Canvas. By spring break, only six teachers were new to the system. It too, allows online submissions and provides embedded videos for teachers to set up lecture series. Set up in modules, students can easily access and understand organization of lessons and complete homework. The daily announcement feature provided opportunity for teachers to publish quizzes and tests that opened and closed at specific times.

Throughout SCA eCampus, grace was the prevailing theme. With the COVID-19 crisis, students and families experienced a wide variety of shifting within their homes: from all family members working from home, to long hours for some family healthcare workers, to heading out to pick up college students and care for elderly family members—life changed. As such, no points were deducted for late work. Special videos were developed to deliver chapels and encouragement.

The development department, a critical component to eCampus, released the audio Devoted Parent devotional for parents, processed multiple chapel and counseling videos, and created fun spirit days to

showcase students working at home. The college advising staff and administration spent hours working with students who were struggling with time management in order to encourage and support them. School Chromebooks were passed out, and a special technology hotline was established to help with any tech needs.

“I continue to be amazed at the flexibility and professionalism of our teachers, as well as the resilience of our committed families and students. The term “high touch” was a rally cry for the entire SCA team.

As a result of eCampus, SCA students have grown powerfully as self-motivated, achieving learners—a skill that will follow them long after their time at SCA,” said Academic Dean Dr. Gill. eCampus has been effective—and has continued to improve throughout the duration of its use. SCA continues to support the development of eCampus and is exploring ideas as to how this effective learning delivery system can continue to provide flexibility and educational excellence. Our hope is to expand opportunity to be the school of choice for Christian families whose priority is excellence.

eCampus Opens Extended Opportunity for Fourth Gr ade Students

by SCA Teacher Trish Teilborg At the onset of eCampus, fourth grade students were beginning a new Foundations & Frameworks unit. Due to the nature of online learning, teachers opted to have everyone read the same book. Pearl Harbor Child by Dorinda Nicholson is part of the fourth grade curriculum. This book is an excellent commentary of Dorinda’s eyewitness account of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. This story took on new meaning for our students as they read about all the ways that life changed for Dorinda when the war started. Dorinda even wrote about having toilet paper shortages and not being able to go to school for a while.

At the conclusion of the unit on April 22, students were invited to participate in a webinar sponsored by The Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Our students were very excited to engage in the chat and hear Dorinda tell parts of her story to which they now felt so connected. At the end of the webinar, they were encouraged to be history recorders too. It will be so exciting to see how our world-changing students record their own personal narrative.

SCA Student Takes Fourth Place in Regional Spelling Bee Seventh grade student Abigail Shanahan received fourth place at the prestigious Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) Regional Spelling Bee in Plano, TX. Tens of thousands of students compete for the privilege to represent their schools at the ACSI District Spelling Bee, and only 370 of them face off in nine regional events throughout the country. Summit Christian Academy is a part of the ACSI’s South Central Region containing six states.

SCA Student to Compete in Lee’s SCA Core Value: Inspiring Summit Rotary Speech Contest Excellence in Learning Freshman Olivia Truesdale has won the SCA competition of the Rotary Four-Way Speech Contest.

The Lee’s Summit Rotary will use video submissions from Olivia and the winners from the three Lee’s Summit public high schools to determine the winner of the Lee’s Summit Rotary Speech Contest.

The SCA faculty inspires students to discover and develop their God-given gifts and talents. We nurture an enthusiasm for learning, providing an atmosphere wherein students may express creativity, discern truth, think critically, and choose wisely. In academics, the arts, and athletics, we uphold a standard of excellence to encourage students to achieve their individual best.

Senior Kennedy Cooper–A Legacy in Speech & Debate her freshman and sophomore years, by her own admission, Kennedy struggled. But, she never gave up on herself. She instead chose to work to achieve the highest levels of competition while attempting events that were challenging.

She mentored and encouraged others to participate in the program, leading the way through example by becoming only the fifth student in the 30year history of Summit Christian to reach the level of Outstanding Distinction in

the National Forensic League Honor Society. That distinction, coupled with her grades, service, and college entrance exam score, has earned her the NSDA Academic All-American Award. That award places her in the top two percent of all speech and debate students in the nation.

Kennedy knows that she is still a work in progress. She continues to work to become a person who sees the glass as half full, rather than half empty. As she moves forward to participate in the speech and debate program at Truman State, there is no doubt she has left a positive legacy at SCA.

Stephanie Santon, Class of 2013 When Stephanie Santon graduated from Southwest Baptist University with her Elementary Education degree, she never dreamed that she would spend her first year of teaching at a Christian school in San Cristobal, Guatemala! Stephanie is teaching 3rd and 4th grade for missionary children at the school.

“The Lord confirmed to me that I am supposed to be a teacher and a missionary as well,” shared Stephanie. “I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now and so glad He chose me for this journey! It is such a joy to be a servant for the Lord!”

Shannah (Withrow) Maser, Class of 2012 Shanna (Withrow) Maser takes girl power and making a difference to an entirely different planet as an aerospace engineer for the NASA Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley! She received a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Missouri University of Science & Technology and has spent her recent efforts looking into enabling martian rotorcraft missions!

Maressa Ross, Class of 2016 Maressa recently graduated from Southwest Baptist University with her Nursing Degree and she soon landed her dream job as a Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MO! Maressa passed the NCLEXon her first try and is officially tending to critically ill children as a Registered Nurse.

"If you would have told me two years ago when I started nursing school that I would get my dream job of working as a nurse in the Pediatric ICU, I honestly don’t think I would have believed you,” shared Maressa. “Jesus has been so kind and so faithful and there are times when I can’t believe this is real.”

Speech & Debate Squad Creates a Pr aiseworthy Second Semester

There have been obstacles… tournament cancellations because of weather and all but one of the district qualifying tournaments that were to begin in March cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It might have been easy to lose sight of what could be accomplished, but as it says in Romans 8:28, “for those who love God, all things work together for good.” With faith, good things wouldn’t be so hard to find.

With the available tournaments, the Eagles found their stride. Everyone saw improvement. For first-year students, the good came as they grew into being able to hold their own in varsity competitions.

For varsity, it was consistently finding themselves in elimination rounds against top competitors from some of biggest schools in the state.

Results included sophomores Zach Akeson and Kaitlyn Gregg placing three times in Public Forum Debate, including

a second place finish at the tournament in Joplin. Juniors Ryan Wagy and Austin Wilson placed four times in Policy Debate, including first place in Joplin. Senior Kennedy Cooper placed three times, twice in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and once in Public Forum; a second place finish with Kaitlyn Gregg Speech & Debate team after the Joplin Tournament. at Park Hill. SCA Gr aduate to Serve as Fort Hays State University VIP Student Ambassador SCA 2017 graduate Carmen Fanning has been selected to serve as a VIP Student Ambassador for the 202021 academic school year at her college, Fort Hays State University (FHSU).

Ambassadors serve as official representatives of FHSU at special events including Homecoming, athletic activities, presidential dinners, and more. Ambassadors must be full-time undergraduate students with a minimum 2.5 grade point average and able to assist with nine to ten events per year. Carmen is one of 21 students who will serve as an FHSU ambassador.

Fanning will be a senior at FHSU majoring in Biology. She also plays on the FHSU women’s soccer team.

Teachers Educate in Innovative Ways As SCA continues using the eCampus platform, teachers and faculty in the Early Education through 12th grade are finding new and fun ways to instruct their students.

“School is truly an anchor for the soul,” said Academic Dean Dr. Kimberlee Gill. “As our students engage with First grade student Evangeline Park teachers, textbooks, and shows off her eCampus desk space. friends, they have been able to experience more of a calm in the middle of the world’s storm.”

Early Education students are busy learning via singing, dancing, reading, and art. Teachers are mailing letters to their students, and everyone is enjoying virtual show and tell. They are looking forward to new videos of community leaders reading to them.

Elementary students have enjoyed their full core curriculum through virtual teaching, along with “pet parades,” devotion times, and lunch dates on Google Hangouts. Special classes have stayed exciting with elementary physical education hosting virtual obstacle course challenges; music continuing to teach recorders, rhythm, and movement; and art providing at-home projects to encourage students to stay even more hands-on in the eLearning environment. Classes are even gathering together virtually just to play games and to hear one anothers’ laughs.

Through the use of Canvas, the learning platform of many

colleges, students in grades 7-12 are balancing time management.

Seventh grade students were recently able to participate in the school’s annual visit to the Omaha Zoo….virtually as the class did a Zoom virtual tour utilizing Google Earth. Science students had the opportunity to not only watch their teacher dissect a frog, but also to pick up their own kit and dissect at home, being led on Google Hangout by their teacher! Secondary choirs are still singing together, and even Student Council is having Zoom meetings and elections for the 2020-21 school year.

With SCA eCampus in full force, the school has worked hard to engage families and the community through the SCA YouTube channel. The channel features devotions for parents, chapel time with speakers, conversations with SCA counselors, as well as exercise programs and opportunities for students to stay active with SCA athletes. SCA is pleased to announce that the 64 members of the Class of 2020 will graduate at a ceremony at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 26, at Connection Point Church (10500 East 350 Hwy Raytown, Missouri 64138).

“We always look forward to honoring our graduating seniors, and never more than this unprecedented school year,” shared SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the SCA community to properly salute the class of 2020.”

SCA has set a back-up graduation date in July if circumstances require.

Summit Christian Academy Senior Receives the P.E.O. STAR Scholarship Senior Daphne Cook is the recipient of the STAR Scholarship from the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.).

The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship is a highly competitive one-time $2,500 scholarship recognizing high school senior women Senior Daphne Cook who demonstrate outstanding leadership, academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community service. STAR Scholarship winners must pursue full or part-time post-secondary education.

Daphne was nominated by the Harrisonville chapter of P.E.O. She plans to attend University of Missouri in the fall.

The Season That Never Happened

by Lance Quessenberry, Athletic Director Unbelievable! This word has been used a lot lately, but it truly defines the 2020 spring athletic season. I could never have imagined a time like this. When Missouri closed schools for the remainder of 2019-20, MSHSAA was also forced to end athletics and activities. Our spring athletes, coaches, and parents were expecting the opportunity to build on the many memories they have made over the years, but instead were left with the shock of a lost opportunity.

During this time, I am normally planning and preparing for daily athletic events. This year, however, all that came to an abrupt halt. My thoughts were quickly replaced by the loss our spring athletes, coaches, and parents were feeling. Above all, we are sad for our 2019-20 spring seniors. They all worked hard to prepare for this season, looked forward to their final chance to compete at the high school level, and to represent SCA on the fields, track, and golf

courses. Senior parents looked forward to seeing their children compete in their final SCA season. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to help them process and understand how and why all of this happened.

Another tough aspect about this experience is that it was totally out of our hands. As athletes and coaches, this is a strange feeling. We all feel if we work harder and put more practice time in, we can overcome anything.

Unfortunately, even hard work and determination could not fix this situation.

Nevertheless, I know God is still in control and understands everything we have experienced. When the cancellations began earlier this spring, I encouraged our athletes, and especially our seniors, to express their anger, fears, and hurts to God because He could handle it. In fact, He encourages it. I shared 1 Peter 5:7 with them where Paul said to, ”Cast ALL your cares upon Him, because He cares for you.” Those who are not

athletic-minded may not understand the hurt of losing the opportunity to Lance Quessenberry compete during a season, but God does. Most of all, He cares about it and wants to walk through it with us.

I have heard from many athletes, coaches, and parents since the closure of spring sports. Many ideas, memories, and emotions have been expressed about the situation in which we find ourselves. As an athletic department, we are working on honoring our seniors through social media and hope to be given the opportunity to honor them in person if/when we are able. We pray we are given the opportunity to do so and will communicate details as soon as plans become clear.

They practice and perform once a month September through March. The 5th-6th grade squad practices one or two times a week. They practice twice a week, perform at pep rallies, and cheer at JH soccer, football and basketball games.

Seasons Change, But the Show Must Go On Spring marks renewal, fresh starts, and new beginnings. Early Education works hard every year to put on a Spring Program in late April so families can see how far their students have progressed. The faces and programs change and grow with each passing year, and this year will be no exception. God has used this season to teach all of us in the Early Education department to stretch and grow, trust, and adapt despite COVID-19. Beginning in early April, the team hatched a plan and encouraged parents to have their students begin practicing Spring Program music.

Pre-K worked on “I Am A Promise” and “Peace Like a River,” while preschool practiced “I Can Pray” and “The B-I-B-L-E.” After they had a couple weeks of practice, parents were asked to video and send in their student’s performance, then our very talented Sarah Coats put together an amazing video to help fill the hole in our hearts from missing our beautiful students. It shows that no matter what, our students can grow and praise Him!

A video version of the Early Education Spring Program will be premiering on May 19 for Early Education families featuring their students.

Senior Receives Summit Art Scholarship Senior Danielle Dean was selected as the SCA Summit Art Scholarship recipient.

The Summit Art Scholarship Committee selects one recipient from each Lee’s Summit high school for use during the 2020-21 school year. The winners are awarded a Senior Danielle Dean $1,500 art scholarship to be used for tuition at an accredited four-year institution.

Danielle plans to attend Missouri State University this fall and major in Art or Education.

SCA Art to be Featured at Missouri Capitol for the Third Year Freshman Yuna (Alyn) Shin was selected as the 2020 Missouri Senate District 8 Art Exhibit Winner.

Each of Missouri’s 34 State Senators view work submitted from their district and select one image to represent them. The chosen images are printed and displayed at the Missouri State Capitol throughout the year to advocate legislator support for the arts.

Alyn’s acrylic painting will be on display through the end of the year in the Senate Hallway at the State Capital in Jefferson City. The exhibit is located on the grounds of the capitol in the Hallway that leads from the Senate parking to the Capitol ground floor entrance. The original piece is on display in the SCA Secondary Building.

SCA Inaugur al Awards for Seal of Biliter acy In conjunction with the Missouri Department of Education, SCA is excited to offer the Seal of Biliteracy award to World Language seniors and senior international students who have attained proficiency in a second language and demonstrated sociocultural competence. The Seal of Biliteracy promotes active participation in a global society by incentivizing, recognizing, and celebrating the acquisition of biliteracy skills and sociocultural awareness. SCA is dedicated to providing an education that prepares students for life and service in today’s world. SCA language students are acquiring skills that include the ability to communicate with individuals, clients, and colleagues who speak a language other than English, as well as understand the sociocultural intricacies that further enhance the relationship. In today’s marketplace, cultural intelligence differentiates individuals and opens doors to global opportunities.

SCA will note this achievement with a statement on the student’s transcript, special recognition with a sealed certificate, a silver and royal blue cord

to wear during graduation, and up to 14 free college credit hours added to the student’s college transcript.

Students had to submit an application for the Seal and take an approved language assessment test to determine if they qualified for the Seal of Biliteracy or the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy. A student must also score 18 or higher on the ACT Reading for the Seal of Biliteracy; and for the Distinguished Seal of Biliteracy, they must score 21 or higher. An additional piece to the award is documenting sociocultural activities, research, projects, and experiences.

Cordell’s Corner: Two Trillion Dollars Stimilus Bill Benefits SCA Donors/Families Good News!! In March, the U.S. Congress passed and President Trump signed into law the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act—legislation that provides an unprecedented and massive array of relief, benefits, and stimulus measures designed to help Americans, businesses, nonprofits, and state and local governments amid the Coronavirus crisis. And this includes SCA. Below are several provisions with benefits to SCA donors in 2020: 1. New above-the-line charitable contribution deduction. For the year 2020, individual taxpayers may claim up to $300 of charitable contributions even though they do not itemize their deductions.

2. Individuals have an increased charitable contribution deduction limit. Cash contributions made by individual taxpayers in 2020 to charities have a new limit of 100% of adjusted gross income – not the 60% limit that regularly applies.

3. Corporations also have an increased charitable contribution deduction limit. Cash contributions made by corporations in 2020 to charities have a new limit of 25% of pretax income – instead of the 10% limit that regularly applies.

4. Excess contributions above these limits may be carried over (for up to five additional years).

5. The limit on deductible food inventory contributions is increased from 15-25% of pretax income.

In addition, the CARES Act allows no-penalty withdrawals from retirement accounts. Usually, someone younger than 59½ making an early withdrawal from a retirement plan is subject to a penalty equal to 10% of the distribution amount. However, the CARES Act allows penalty-free distributions from IRAs and qualified retirement plans up to $100,000, if made on or after Jan. 1 and before Dec. 31, 2020.

Board Report The Board of Education met Feb. 26, Mar. 26, and Apr. 23.

The Dec., Jan., Feb., and Mar. financial statements were presented for review and the school remains on budget.

Mrs. Harrelson reported that Feb. enrollment was up by 13% over this time last year. It also included mention of the Feb. ACSI, LSEDC, and Civic Roundtable board meetings she serves on. Mar. enrollment has flattened in light of the Coronavirus crisis.

The board received a report from Dr. Gill in Feb. She has testified twice in Jefferson City at legislative hearings on school-choice bills. She also spoke at a school-choice rally,

which had 26 schools attend despite bad weather. The report also mentioned the Legislative Breakfast SCA hosted that had 108 in attendance.

Dr. Gill reported in March on the amazing job the faculty did in creating and implementing the eCampus learning program.

There were some glitches but overall, the project has been phenomenal. Dr. Gill participated in an ACSI Town Hall meeting with 465 other schools. SCA is doing everything the panel suggested and then some. There is more and more individualized learning going on and teachers are setting the bar high so students finish the year strong.

The special withdrawal rules apply to eligible retirement plans, which include individual retirement accounts and annuities (IRAs), qualified pension, profit-sharing, or stock bonus plans (including 401(k) (plans), qualified 403(a) annuity plans, 403(b) annuity contracts and custodial accounts, and governmental section 457 deferred compensation plans.

The board received a preliminary 2020-21 budget, as well as a preliminary 2020-21 teacher salary schedule.

The Board reviewed the snow days report. It was the consensus of the board that since SCA’s attendance hours exceed the state attendance requirements that the three snow days that have been covered with two built into the schedule and the February 17 makeup day, that we not make up the three remaining snow days, nor the four days of extended spring break. The academic dean and faculty believe

they can cover all subject matter with the remaining days. The last day of school will remain as Tuesday, May 19.

The board voted to issue contracts to teachers and professional staff.

The SCA Strategic Plan was updated to reflect that the goal of implementing an SCA online program has been met with the creation and roll out of the eCampus program.

The Board and Mrs. Harrelson discussed the differences between our eCampus and traditional online classes. They are very different and neither one can replace what students learn in on-campus classrooms.
