Restoring Biodiversity:

4 Discover

Growing up in a small Midwestern town, Marcia Carsten took for granted the sights and sounds of the natural world that surrounded her. Over time, as bird calls became less frequent, insects less obvious and fireflies no longer flickered over evening lawns, she realized something was wrong. It wasn’t until a chance encounter with a naturalist that Marcia had an epiphany, leading her to embark on a journey that transformed her outdoor space into a thriving haven for native plants and wildlife. Discover how one woman’s dedication to restoring biodiversity through a Wild Back Yard is making a difference.

Marcia’s revelation came eight years ago at a Twinsburg Garden Club meeting, where Naturalist Stanley Stine shared beautiful photos of flowering native plants and the insects that depended on them for survival. Marcia realized

Marcia embarked on a journey of discovery, changing her approach to gardening and learning all she could about native insects and the habitats that support them. She became an Ohio Volunteer Pollinator Specialist, Certified

the plants she had been growing had no function other than to be pretty, and they supported none of the incredibly important native insects, birds and other wildlife that were noticeably becoming absent from her outdoor spaces.

Volunteer Naturalist and a Xerces Ambassador. She also joined the board of Friends of Hudson Parks, beginning a movement to educate residents and elected officials about the importance of supporting native wildlife through the

Now pesticide-free and full of native trees, bushes, grasses and flowers, Marcia’s Wild Back Yard serves as a sanctuary for a wide variety of native creatures, including fireflies, native bees, butterflies, chipmunks, squirrels and the occasional raccoon or fox. The vernal pools she dug help with drainage and provide a habitat for native wetland plants and frogs, toads and salamanders.

Marcia reports that thanks to the beneficial native insects and animal species populating her Wild Back Yard, natural pest control is a breeze.

“My yard buzzes, cheeps, chirps and hops from spring to fall. It is an incredibly diverse and interesting yard filled with things to watch and enjoy.” ]

To Marcia, a challenge of native gardening is finding native plants grown without the use of pesticides. She also had to learn how native plants adapt to the enriched garden environment. Through trial and error, she discovered some native plants are very adaptable to differing light or water needs. She uses native plant guides to research light, water and soil requirements, then experiments by creating similar environments in her own yard.

Marcia’s journey has resulted in a thriving habitat of native creatures and

blooming plants. Her Wild Back Yard has become a vibrant and inviting space, attracting native insects, wildlife and even her human neighbors. However, the impact of Marcia’s work extends far beyond the aesthetic value of her garden. By prioritizing the protection and preservation of native wildlife and their habitats, she has demonstrated the power of individual action in restoring balance to our urban and suburban landscapes. Marcia’s story serves as a reminder that creating habitats for local wildlife is crucial to sustaining the natural world that we all rely on.

If you’re inspired by Marcia’s story, join the movement to restore biodiversity to your outdoor space through the Summit Metro Parks Grow a Wild Back Yard program! Visit bit.ly/wildbackyards for educational resources, seasonal yard tips and more.

Nature’s diversity thrives in Marcia’s back yard, featuring a variety of mature oak, cherry, beech, maple and tulip trees, complemented by smaller trees and bushes like spicebush, witch hazel, pawpaw and dogwoods.

Summer Wildflowers Burst with Color and Life

Wildflowers are in full swing this time of year. Yellow, white, lavender and more — as one species fades, nature has another ready to bloom in its place. Replicate this slow-motion fireworks show of blossoms in your own yard to provide never-ending beauty and constant food sources for pollinators. Choosing a variety of flower shapes can also support diversity. Flat, disk-like flowers such as coneflowers and coreopsis are easiest for butterflies to land on, while tubular flowers fit the beaks of hummingbirds and allow bees to climb inside.

The best parks for summer wildflower viewing include Springfield Bog, Liberty Park and F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm. Explore the parks and get inspiration for your own landscape. Remember, the coming fall months are a great time to plant if you want to enjoy a blooming show of your own next year! You can find a list of local native plant vendors at bit.ly/WildBackYards.

Related to the tropical hibiscus of Hawaii, these large blossoms thrive in wet soils.

Summit Metro Parks

Through Your Lens

Honoring the beauty and discoveries in park visitor photography

If you’ve spent any time in Summit County’s beautiful Metro Parks, you already know that sweeping vistas, unique landscapes and diverse creatures abound.

Capturing these moments through photography helps us inspire and connect people to nature who have yet to visit or are unable to do so. The beautiful photos you take demonstrate to people near and far that Summit County and its greenspaces are unique and worthy of a second look.

Photography has evolved greatly over the past few decades, and it’s more accessible than ever. Some of our visitors enjoy photographing landscapes or other subjects they find of interest in the parks, and others use it as a complement to other hobbies like birding or documenting species for iNaturalist. Here are a few ways you can develop your photography skills:

Start on your smartphone Speaking of photography evolutions, smartphone cameras have become increasingly sophisticated over time. Some photos taken on a smartphone can rival those taken on dSLR (digital single-lens reflex) cameras.

Become familiar with settings and terminology. While camera equipment differs between brands, you can explore different modes and the cause and

effect of adjusting ISO, aperture and shutter speed (all of which are settings that control light). Next, consider how to maximize the impact of your photo through composition. You can find a lot of free tips through a web search!

Learn from other locals. There are a lot of talented photographers in Summit County and beyond! Many are willing to share tips with those looking to get started, especially within the nature photography genre. Keep an eye out for opportunities for informal meetups, classes or clubs like Cuyahoga Valley Photographic Society or Akron Camera Club.

We’re grateful to the many people who have shared their photography with us over the years, whether by informally tagging us on social media or as registered volunteers. We encourage you to do the same! Please tag us on your next SMP outing photo, or if you’re a photographer with experience in high-quality nature photography looking for a more formal role with Summit Metro Parks, contact volunteer@ summitmetroparks.org to learn more about becoming a photography volunteer.
