ORIGINALS came about when Katie and I got to talking about the kind of personalities she connected with in her pop ups. Just like our relationship it was born out of me hungrily carving through her notorious Valencia Street pop up vintage (originally in front of her Mission garage) but formed into the kind of friendship that distance cannot erase and one liners or funny memes make up half of it. She has that natural aura about her that people want to orbit. That and the treasures she currates are irresistable, some even collectables. Community. ORIGINALS are the uncommon, eccentric, innovative and fuck alls that gather round her racks and stay, kind of like club members naturally. We are celebrating the FREEDOM they’ve created for themselves. In their work, in their personal style, in the way they move about the world on a path all their own. Original. Summer

Imagine if you knew what happened in the clothes you bought. Or who owned them.
What is the story behind that jean jacket or what happened in that little black dress.
But more importantly, What story are you going to add to it? Where will it go? What will it do?
First dates, flights to Paris, concerts in the Park, first kiss at the bar, friday nights or family dinners.
Whatever you do, make it count.
Whatever you do, be the loudest, most dressed up, and give zero fucks in it.
It’s your life. Write your own story.
Katie
Owner and Founder of PORTER Vintage
Making classic look cool again, Katie Porter thankfully started a pop up outside her San Francisco Mission neighborhood garage so we would one day meet. Another trait that makes Porter Vintage unique; Katie’s clothes have a wide range of designers. In fact some of her clothes are collectables (one dress you can only find in a museum). Yet she still remains humble, a quality hard to find in a fashion CEO.
“I remember all the moments I’ve made in clothing I bought from PORTER Vintage. What I find in Katie’s collections are meant for those moments when you’re like Oh I’ll just go for one drink and then somehow end up in Paris or finding a new bestie. When clothes give you that much power or bravado you simply have to go back for more.”

What once started as a street pop up in front of a garage has officially gone global and DIGITAL. PORTER Vintage is more than just a pop up. It’s more than just clothes. Katie and her budding empire represent the circular economy in the present. WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN?
Shopping used or vintage clearly means one is not adding yet another piece of “trash” to the earth. No extra processing, dye, oil, water use and labor are extracted thus the relationship to that clothing is circular in nature. Especially if one re-enters the clothing back into circulation after they’re done living in it vs trashing it. AND instead of buying something new to replace it we again seek out a unique piece that represents who we are in that moment or can help us express what we need to say at that time.
Second, her brand’s foundation isn’t built off cheap nostalgia. Her images and branding isn’t trying to LIVE in the past like many other tired vintage shops. She, Kate Moss style, positions her finds in the future. We pair boots with bomber jackets and 90’s chokers with YSL trousers. Oscar de la Renta with Nike. This isn’t
a time capsule, it’s 2023 people and PORTER Vintage’s aim is to make sure every wardrobe from here to Prague (another fashion underdog we’ll explore in future editions) has a healthy mix of circular and staples (sturdy, sustainable ones).
Shopping with purpose and for pieces that are ORIGINAL or extremely unique forces us to LIVE with greater purpose. We live more bold in bolder pieces.
Visit portervintage.com to find your greater purpose and next adventure.

WHAT A YEAR!
Why I’m excited about this SoCal Project
Yes, what are year it’s been! I definitely had some hurdles I could never have predicted. It got a little scary and a little sad but it also opened up some giant freaking doors! … How I see it - we have to go through the feelings so they don’t bite us in the ass later, but major transitions are ripe with opportunity and it’s just up to us to take action. What I am most amazed by and can’t fully put into words is how deeply I was able to turn to and count on my community.
The community that has formed around PORTER Vintage is just unreal. I can’t believe how many cool ass people I meet every day! Some come by to hug and catch up, others visit while wearing what they got last time just to share with us how happy their new treasures make them. Then there are determined babes, who are on the hunt for the perfect pair of cowboy boots, and when we can find them together its pure joy! The pop-ups are nonstop magic.
The biz has grown on a foundation of love and enthusiasm for all things style, expression, experimentation, and individualism. My aunt and I shared this world.
A love of high quality used clothing is fuel for creative styling: mixing eras, juxtaposing the original aesthetic (think st. John with cowboy boots and a thrashed leather moto) finding your quality vintage basics that make up an original daily uniform (blazer collection, band tees, perfectly worn 501s in multiple washes?)…
This is what Lizzie and I have been bonding over since I was five years old (and had an epic chest of costumes- well I called them costumes but they were designer gems and vintage lingerie).
Letter from
the Katie
But anyway, that bond that she and I had often involved me pulling sections for all my friends. I had a pile for each bestie based on their individual style. It’s a really cool way of knowing somebody- when you see something and it just says “Marcelle” all over it.” Getting to style people every weekend and helping them find their confidence through fashion and uniqueness is an honor and a privilege. I have had people tell me how much shopping at PV and finding special pieces for their wardrobe has lifted their confidence and even improved their body image… like I said, it’s a gd blessing. There’s a true emotional and soulful side to this circular fashion life!
Community and connection bring endless possibilities. Getting to work on this project with Summer is exactly what I’m talking about. Summer and I met a while back when I was still popping up in my driveway on 23rd and Guerrero. She continued to shop with PV on Valencia and has quite a collection I must say! She’s shared with me every time she uses one of our pieces in a photo shoot and her enthusiasm has certainly boosted my belief in the PV brand. I’m so excited to be collaborating with Summer. What she brings to the table professionally and her cool ass boss babe vibes are unbeatable.
We’ve talked about collaborating over the years and watching this project come to life growing its own legs, and watching this woman bust out majorly, creative and sharp content is just wild. For this project, we styled local creatives in a way that celebrated each one’s personal style- adding in the PV pieces that fit- or slightly stretched- their already individual aesthetic. I got to spend the days with them, watching each woman come to life for the camera and straight up OWN each ensemble. More Originals to come!
I could ramble on for ever on what this means to me- I’m an emotional person, if you know me at all you’ve probably seen me cry (happy tears usually). So on that note- that note being how rad it is to collaborate with Summer, were thrilled to share… Porter Vintage SoCal!!! Coming soon. After that, Paris, Mexico City? Idk Summer what do you think? xo, Katie

Spice up your Jean Jacket
Any asshole can own or buy a used jean jacket. And plain (or missionary) is perfectly fine. But why not make something your own? Fashion is after all a method of self expression. We have the ability to make statements (even history) with what we wear and in what context we wear it. Here are some ideas we found on the interweb but we’d like YOU to help us decide what to put on this jean jacket. It was once a Top Shop but should we make it a Porter Original what new persona should it take on? Tag your design ideas on IG for the Month of March. Winner gets this Jean Jacket to make their own!
Music & Fashion
You don’t need to be stylish to love good music but there’s no denying that fashion and music are deeply connected. We can’t wait to elaborate but there are collaborations in the works and stay tuned for live music on the PV IG.

Freedom to Express
Welcome to the first ever Porter ORIGINALS segment. We decided to put our money where our mouth is and connect with the community we’ve come to love and admire. A PORTER ORIGINAL is someone who carves their own path and lives on their own terms. Please enjoy the stories of these beautiful women we’re excited to share during Women’s History Month.

MARISSA
Nanny, Artist, Student extraordinaire
Summer If you can introduce yourself in your own words, I also tell people you’re a nanny, artist, and future child psychologist.
Marissa I am a forever student, always striving to learn and grow, and I am also your fun-loving nanny! I love working with kids because it allows me to be a kid again in a lot of ways. Even if thats living vicariously through the children I care for.
Summer You’ll be finishing school soon and I know you’re working on your next move. Do you want to go travel first or are you heading right to another University?
Marissa All I really want to do is travel. While in school I am trying to learn new skills and figure out a way to become freer. After college, I’d love to find a remote job with flexible hours that affords me a lifestyle where I can travel all the time.

Summer You grew up here in these sleepy North County Beach towns. Do you have interesting places you can share with us that aren’t super touristy? Locals secrets.
Marissa A few of my favorite spots here in North County are Spin Records, a mom-and-pop store located in downtown Carlsbad. I also love thrifting at Captain’s Helm in Oceanside, it’s my fave!
Summer I feel like you already give back to this world since you raise future children and so gracefully given how young you are! Old soul. But when you think of saving the world what truly stirs your interest?
Marissa Sustainability definitely sparks my interest. I love doing my part by buying clothes second-hand and growing my own food in my own garden!
Summer I feel like this year, a lot is going to happen for you. So what are you looking forward to most?
Marissa I am looking forward to figuring out what my next move is! The unknown is pretty scary and cool in that way. It’s exciting having the freedom to make choices that affect my future.
Summer If you have one place you’d like to escape to on a solo trip where would you go and why?
Marissa I think I would love to visit Thailand or Spain! Thailand because of the food and elephants and Spain so I can work on my Español:)

VERONICA
Eastern Medicine Student
Summer First introduce yourself you fucking fox.
Veronica Veronica Swords, Doctoral Student of East Asian Medicine.
Summer You just moved from Brooklyn, your forever home, in covid to San Diego. Why?
Veronica 35 years of NY.
Summer After school what’s your plan stan?
Veronica There will be a few intense months of studying for state and national boards before I’ll be licensed and practicing! Many sacrifices were made in order to get through this degree, so there’s a list of places to visit and people to see including my family in Ireland and Shawn’s father in the Philippines.
Summer Aside from school what the hell do you do on weekends and weeknights? I know you and Shawn are pretty busy so tell me bout your upcoming shenanigans.
Veronica I’m near certain all I do is study. Weeknights I’m either treating patients at my school’s clinic or home studying, And weekends I’m home sipping on tequila, studying and researching. I also try to slip in some time for the beach, hanging with friends, playing pickleball, having living room dance parties, cooking, and checking out restaurants and cocktail bars. Currently hunting for a club where I can find Soca kind of dance vibes as well as a natural hot spring to hike to.

Summer Whats your morning like? Are you a morning person? If not whats your evening like?
Veronica For sure, morning person. I generally wake before the sun rises so I can take my sweet ass time in the morning around coffee, research, stretching, NPR, hanging with the cats, shooting the shit with Shawn, and then off to the gym or beach for a walk before starting the day.
ANDREEA
Film Director, Visual Artist

Summer Tell us briefly what you do for a job or career:
Andreea I’m a visual artist and filmmaker. I own a boutique design studio and I help film directors visualize their creative ideas through art direction, design and video editing.
Summer I know because I’m a bestie that music really moves you. In fact you used to work at a record store. What is a record that:
Reminds you of your youth:
Andreea Bush Glycerine
Summer Is something you’d jam to while editing or working:
Andreea Nicolas Jaar’s “Space is only noise” , DJ Koze “Amygdala” , Weval. So many here. It’s what keeps the creative blood flowing.
Summer You’d bang to:
Andreea I like to start the night with a little Miles Davis.
Summer Makes you want to dance:
Andreea At the moment, when I need to shake it out, I blast some Fred Again or The Blaze and dance around the house with my daughter.
Summer We’ve also talked about disappearing for a week to find inspiration. You’ve already beat me to it and done it. BUT where would you want to disappear to next for your next inspo session?
30
Andreea Good question, I’ve really been feeling the need to do this, but it’s tough to leave my daughter, who is still so young. I came back early last time. As soon as I can bare it, I want to escape to a bustling city. Funny, right? I just want to feel the energy of a pulsating city and the richness of ideas all around me. Maybe Mexico City, New York or Tokyo.
Summer I’m a morning person and therefore morning routines are sacred and to me the most important part of the day. What is your morning routine?
Andreea I’m not necessarily a morning person (as you know), but my most productive work is almost always in the morning. That’s exactly why it’s also essential for me to have a good morning routine. Leaving the house to get coffee and going for a brisk walk where I listen to music or podcasts is essential for me to start the day off right. I’ve also noticed that drinking a glass of lemon water when I wake up gives me an extra energy boost.
Summer And second to last but not least, what is one thing you’d like to see accomplished for yourself this year?
Andreea I have a personal project I’d like to shoot before summer and script to finish before the end of the year.
Summer And how are you going to give back to your community?
Andreea At the moment, my community is the “new mom” community. My goal is to create more art-inspired, activity-based playdates for the parents and children in my new community.

LINX
Stylist, Personal Shopper, Entreprenuer
Summer We are a unique duo, you and I. We met via model mayhem while I was road tripping home from LA (from a gig) through Arizona. We met up in Sedona for what turned out to be a very VERY beautiful shoot in a picturesque red rock Sedona sunset. Now we find ourselves living in the same far away beach town in Southern California. What are the odds?! Why did you move here?
Linx After living in the desert for a few years, I knew I needed to live on the west coast. I was originally looking at LA for the art scene, but I really wanted to live somewhere peaceful.. that’s hardly LA. Life had brought me to Encinitas a few times in the past and I knew there was something special here. Besides being a beautiful paradise, Encinitas offers a relaxed small town vibe near the hustle and creativity of LA.
Summer I know you and I have been chatting about what you’re working on. This incredible and much needed business called Beauty Way. Can you introduce it?
Linx I’d love to! Beauty Way is about creating beauty inside & out while being kind to the planet and the people on it. I offer sustainable personal shopping, styling and interior decorating. I focus on sourcing eco-friendly and fair-trade goods from independent, artisan, and mission-led businesses. My goal is to support my clients in feeling their most radiant self while also supporting businesses that are doing well by the world.
Summer Besides your business what’s one action or service or hobby you spend time on?
35
37
Linx Turning my new apartment into a sacred space! Styling a home sustainably can take a lot more time and intention than conventional methods. My home is slowly, but surely and beautifully coming together and I love putting my heart into it.
Summer Give us a snap shot of your day. I know it’s probably not “typical” but like yesterday, what did you do?
Linx In the winter months, I like to enjoy slow mornings. I often don’t set an alarm. Upon waking, I do my morning routine and skincare and make some matcha. I spend the mornings working, typically from home, for my clients. Afternoons are usually spent running errands and doing personal shopping. In the winter, I’m usually home and having a quiet night by dark. At the end of everyday, I always wash my face and do my skincare! (It took a while to break the habit of ignoring my skincare when I’m tired) Lately I’ve been enjoying a couple episodes of “My Unorthodox Life” and some Hu chocolate before bed.
Summer How are you planning to give back to community this year?
Linx I want to feed community by creating more of it! I think the pandemic has made a lot of people feel isolated and in a sense, It seems like we’ve forgotten how to connect with each other. With Beauty Way, I want to create community building events that enrich our relationship to each other.
Summer What’s one thing you’d like to do for someone you love this year?
Linx I’d love to be able to fly my mom out here to San Diego for a long weekend and treat her to a spa day.
