Jose Armendariz, M.D., is fellowship-trained in primary care sports medicine. A graduate of St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, he completed a residency at Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine in Davenport, IA, and a fellowship with Summa Health Sports Medicine.

Mark Cipriani, M.D., is fellowship-trained and board-certified in primary care sports medicine. He completed his family medicine training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and an additional year of training through a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland.

Dr. Armendariz enjoys spending time with his wife, traveling, playing chess, motorcycle riding and playing golf.

Blossom Heindel, D.O.

Robert Crawford, M.D., has deep roots in the Akron community. He has been the team physician for Wadsworth High School since 1992 and the Akron Aeros/RubberDucks since 2010. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Crawford has served as the head team physician for Kent State University and event physician for the Akron Marathon. He also has assisted with the medical care for many other Akron-area events.

Blossom Heindel, D.O., graduated medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a family medicine residency at Summa Health System – Akron Campus and a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Akron Children’s Hospital. She currently practices primary care sports medicine for Summa Health Medical Group and is the team physician for Manchester High School.

Dr. Crawford is an associate clinical professor of sports medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University and Ohio University Heritage School of Medicine, and is an avid educator of residents, fellows, medical students, and patients.

Nilesh Shah, M.D., is fellowship-trained and board-certified in primary care sports medicine. An Ohio native, Zachary Vallandingham, D.O., hails from Dayton, OH. He completed medical school at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and family medicine and sports medicine fellowship training at Summa Health.

Dylan Childs, M.D., is a board-certified hand and plastic/ reconstructive surgeon with interests in hand and wrist pathology, peripheral nerve conditions and the soft tissue component of complex extremity reconstruction. He graduated from Northeast Ohio Medical University and completed residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at Summa Health, as well as a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Dr. Vallandingham currently serves as the team physician/ medical staff for Cuyahoga Falls High School, the Akron Marathon Race Series and the Akron RubberDucks. He enjoys taking care of athletes and especially enjoys helping active individuals recover from injuries and get back to their active lifestyles. Ryan Combs, M.D., majored in biology at Grace College, IN, and received medical training at Southern Illinois University, where he found his passion to pursue a career in orthopedics. He completed residency training in orthopedic surgery at Cleveland Clinic Akron General and received specialty training in Indianapolis under world-renowned surgeon, Dr. Michael Meneghini. Under Dr. Meneghin’s guidance, Dr. Combs learned advanced techniques in total knee and total hip replacement, including the latest advances in allowing rapid, yet safe, discharge to home after total joint replacement. He also performed hip and knee replacements and general orthopedic services at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. Dr. Combs is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Bradley Inkrott, M.D., a native of Findlay, OH, is a boardcertified, fellowship-trained surgeon who specializes in the care of disorders of the entire spine. A native of Elyria, OH, Matthew Jaykel, M.D., is an orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive treatment of the entire spine, as well as adult spinal deformity. He completed his undergraduate studies at Youngstown State University and his medical training at Northeast Ohio Medical University. Dr. Jaykel went on to complete an orthopedic surgery residency at Western Michigan University followed by an adult spine surgery fellowship at Duke University in Durham, NC. Jeffrey Junko, M.D., a foot and ankle surgeon, has been in the Akron area since graduating from The University of Akron in 1995. Derek Klaus, M.D., is a graduate of The University of Toledo College of Medicine and the Summa Health orthopedic surgery residency program. He pursued additional sub-specialty training in hand and upper extremity surgery in Pittsburgh before deciding to join the growing orthopedic team at Summa Health.

Eric Miller, M.D., was born and raised in Northeast Ohio, where he now resides with his family. He completed his residency at Summa Health and his orthopedic trauma fellowship at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, TX, the nation’s first level-one trauma center. He has served as the orthopedic trauma director at Summa Health System for the past 12 years since returning to Akron.

Dr. Klaus, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, has a clinical focus on fractures, nerve compression syndromes such as carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel, tendon disorders (like trigger finger and DeQuervain’s), total joint replacements of the shoulder and elbow, as well as arthroscopy of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist. In his free time, he enjoys collegiate athletics and spending time with his wife and three children.

Kiel Pfefferle, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and native of Tiffin, OH. Joseph Rabe, M.D., is a fellowship-trained surgeon who specializes in orthopedic sports medicine. A native of the Akron area, Jacqueline Tulodzieski-Ahlstrom, DPM, attended The University of Akron, earning a degree in secondary education before realizing her passion was medicine. She attended the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (now known as Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine) and spent her first year of residency at the former Summa Health Western Reserve Hospital.

Dr. Tulodzieski-Ahlstrom then transferred to Inova Fairfax Hospital, a level-1 trauma center in Falls Church, VA.

Ryan Urchek, M.D., a native of Warren, OH, is a fellowshiptrained surgeon who specializes in orthopedic sports medicine. He completed his undergraduate studies and obtained his medical degree from The Ohio State University.

A graduate of Summa Health’s orthopedic surgery residency program, he pursued further fellowship training in sports medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. This included caring for athletes at Georgia Tech and working with the Atlanta Falcons. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, barbecuing and Cleveland sports.

As chief of the Limb Salvage program at Georgetown University Hospital, she continued to refine her expertise in podiatry. Since completing her residency, Dr. TulodzieskiAhlstrom has been practicing in Northeast Ohio before joining the Summa Orthopedic Group.

Christian Backer, PA-C Christian Backer is a certified physician assistant working with the Summa Health Orthopedic Institute since January 2022. He specializes in orthopedic hand surgery in both surgical and clinical settings, working alongside Dr. Dylan Childs and Dr. Derek Klaus.

Raised in Akron, Scott Weiner, M.D., has been practicing orthopedic oncology for 27 years at Summa Health System – Akron Campus. A graduate of Summa Akron City Hospital’s residency program, he did additional training in orthopedic oncology at the University of Florida prior to returning to Akron to run the residency training program. Dr. Weiner is the chair of orthopedics at Summa Health System. His practice focuses on bone and muscle tumors in children and adults.

Originally from Uniontown, OH, Christian graduated from The University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science in biology and continued his education in physician assistant studies at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, OH. Christian enjoys spending time outdoors hiking and watching movies.

Jack Bonfiglio has been a physician assistant with Summa Health Orthopedic Institute since March 2021. Originally from Toledo, OH, Jack graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor’s of science degree in neuroscience and continued his education at Ohio Dominican University earning his master’s degree in physician assistant studies. Jack focuses primarily on adult reconstruction in both clinical and surgical settings, working alongside Ryan Combs, M.D.

Emily (Emmy) Hull joined the Summa Health orthopedic team in May 2021. As an inpatient orthopedic physician assistant, she works alongside all of the Summa orthopedic surgeons in the practice.

However, her day-to-day is spent working with the Summa orthopedic residents, evaluating and treating operative and non-operative patients with a wide array of orthopedics-related issues. Emmy, a registered dietitian, is a graduate of The University of Akron, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition and dietetics. She then completed her Masters of Science in biomedical sciences degree at The University of Toledo, where she graduated as a physician assistant. In her free time, Emmy enjoys running, cycling and spending time with her family at Walt Disney World.

Michele Fabian graduated from Cleveland State University with a Master of Science in health sciences in addition to a physician assistant studies certificate from Cuyahoga Community College. Today, she leads podiatry at the Summa Health Internal Medicine and Family Practice residency clinics.

Michele specializes in diabetic foot care and general podiatry conditions, including plantar warts, toenail fungus, minor foot wounds, thick toenails, heel pain, calluses and corns, athletes foot, general foot pain, diabetic foot exams, high arched feet and flat feet.

Mia Kaehler is a certified physician assistant that has been with the Summa Health Orthopedic Institute since June 2021. She specializes in foot and ankle surgery and primarily works with Jeffrey Junko, M.D., in clinical and surgical settings.

Mia is originally from Indiana where she attended Butler University for both her bachelor’s degree in health sciences and master’s degree in physician assistant studies. In her free time, she enjoys trying new restaurants, attending and participating in local community theater, and exploring Northeast Ohio.

As a nationally certified physician assistant with Summa Health Orthopedic Institute, Nicholas Luisi treats patients within a clinical setting and assists in surgery. He has more than five years of orthopedic experience and focuses on adult reconstruction alongside Kiel Pfefferle, M.D. Nicholas has a master’s degree in physician assistant studies from New York Institute of Technology and is also a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University.

With a primary focus in sports medicine and surgery, Jennifer Ogorzolka treats patients in the clinical setting and assists in surgery alongside Ryan Urchek, M.D. Her experience in orthopedic surgery subspecialities ranges from pediatric sports and orthopedic surgery to adult reconstruction and hand surgery.

Natalie McGreal works closely with all of Summa Health’s orthopedic physicians to provide patients with the best team-based care. She graduated from The University of Toledo with a master’s in biomedical sciences concentrating in physician assistant studies, as well as The University of Akron with a Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering. During her engineering schooling, she was employed at DePuy Orthopaedics as a biomedical engineer co-op.

Tyler Shearer has been a physician assistant with Summa Health Orthopedic Institute since January 2019. He focuses on orthopedic trauma alongside Eric Miller, M.D. Originally from western NY, Tyler graduated with a Bachelor of Science in sports medicine in 2016 and obtained his master’s in physician assistant studies in 2018, both from Mercyhurst University in Erie, PA. A Cleveland Cavaliers fan, Tyler enjoys watching and playing sports, as well as outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and boating.

Alix Melville, APRN A registered nurse at Summa Health since 2015, Alix Melville joined the Summa Health Orthopedic Institute in 2020 as a certified nurse practitioner.

She focuses primarily on adult reconstruction, treating patients within the clinical setting and assisting in surgery alongside Kiel Pfefferle, M.D. Alix received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Walsh University and obtained her master’s degree from Malone University, specializing as an acute care adult-gerontology nurse practitioner.

Susan Skeggs, MSN, APRN, FNP-C Susan Skeggs, an advanced practice registered nurse, is a member of the Summa Health Orthopedic Institute’s spine team. Susan received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Kent State University in Kent, OH, in 2003, and worked in the cardiovascular surgical intensive care unit, orthopedic post anesthesia care unit, and pain management. Susan continued her studies at Walsh University in North Canton, OH, where she earned a master’s degree in nursing, as well as certification as an advanced practice registered nurse and family nurse practitioner in 2020. As a nurse practitioner, Susan has gained extensive background in pain management procedures with the understanding of what procedures to order to best help the patient.
