As part of the India-Africa Knowledge Exchange Mission, organized by the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and World Bank, the African Delegation visited the Tata STRIVE Skill Development Centre at Airoli, Maharashtra. The delegation witnessed, first hand, the skill coaching sessions as well as learners practicing inside a variety of laboratories.

EVENTS AND EVENTFULLNESS @TATA STRIVE

The coming together of passionate learners, industry experts and seasoned coaches- for lessons in synergistic learning. 'A Course of Events' is a section which highlights events across the length and breath of Tata STRIVE.

1. Bridal finesse: Learners from the Assistant Beauty Therapist batch at TSSDC, Pune organized a bridal makeup competition with a difference. Not only were the 'model brides' from the community itself, but the spouse and families of the learners were in presence too! "As a young woman in India, getting your families to see you doing well at your 'job'", says Sushma Gaikwad, ABT facilitator, "has empowering effects."

The learners showcased aspects such as drapery and hair-styling on varied themes such as Maharashtrian bride, Muslim Bride, Bengali bride and the like.

The top three contenders were given their medals by their family members.

2. Expert Touch: In a sincere effort to perfect industry-readiness, volunteers from Tata Communication came

together with Tata STRIVE learners to hone their resume writing skills. Sailesh Lambe, Centre Manager, Pune, said that the event was "very well received" and that the learners "couldn't be happier on getting to learn from the experts from the field."

4. Smiles galore: Learners pursuing the QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) Course at TSSDC, Mumbai, gave a thoughtful performance at the '100th store celebrations' of Tata Starbucks in India.

5. Reaching Out: General Duty Assistant learners from TSSDC, Pune performed a nukkad naatak (street theatre) on World First Aid Day. The mentor for the performance was their GDA Facilitator Ms. Shweta. The skit was on the importance of first aid after accident, sun stroke, burn, broken bone, dog bite and choking of food veins. After a performance within the centre premises, the team then moved to the community and performed the act at five places in a single day.

9 & 10. HR Connect: In a bid to spread the festive cheer, the HRM function at Tata STRIVE organized celebratory events at all TSSDCs, and Partner centres. Learners and coaches together churned out vibrant rangolis and wall paintings.

The winner's click was by Aahna Srikanth from Mumbai, captioned "when nature takes over".

A quick look at the industry recognition of our work.

Tata STRIVE has been awarded the Service Excellence Award in the category of Education and Consultancy by ASSOCHAM, at the Summit cum Excellence Awards hosted at Hotel the Park, New Delhi.

With rapid developments in information technology, globalisation, changing customer needs and preferences, and the changes in relative wealth between the developed and the newly developed economies; the dominance of the service sector in India and the many challenges it faces makes it increasingly important for businesses and non-profits to consider, support, and reinforce it. Recognising this, ASSOCHAM has been actively participating in the promotion of skill development programmes in various parts of India, and has emerged as a fountainhead of knowledge for the Indian industry.

Tata STRIVE is the group-wide, group-led skilling initiative that is present in 20 Indian states and has more than 60 Tata STRIVE centres; with 1.4 Lac youth having experienced the Tata STRIVE advantage. It actively builds partnerships with Tata companies, non-profits, non-Tata companies, government agencies, foundations, trusts and banks to form wellcrafted, job-oriented courses to hone the skills of the youth.

LEARNING CURVE: Laxman on Top Laxman Pawar is a 21-year-old male who comes from a family of farm labourers in Tambewadi. Tambewadi is a medium-sized village in the Solapur district of the state of Maharashtra with a little less than 300 families residing in it.

After completion of his 10th board exams, he left his village and went to Baramati for further education. He completed his 12th board exams and did his BCom. But it was punctuated by little or zero economic incentive. A punctuation that did not seemed to end.

His parents had been working hard to get him educated. “They generally do not refuse my decisions”, he says, but quickly adds, “At the end of the day, they are farm labourers – cultivating someone else’s land” (Khaetikisaani toh kisi aur ki zameen par hi karte hain na”.

“How much more could they afford for me?”

Laxman tells me how he was beginning to internalize a very dangerous realization: since he was ‘born poor’, hence life must go on that way too.

The tone of his talk saw a shift as did the expression on his face. “Tata STRIVE ne umeed jagayi aur nibhai” (“Tata STRIVE came into my life – a ray of hope emerged and the hopes, were fulfilled too”), he said, with an unearthly calm & contentment.

He came to know about Tata Strive from Mr. Bharat Vitkar (who works for DNTs in Maharashtra under the banner of Mazi Bandhilakhi) and told Laxman about the quality of the programs offered here.

After the interest inventory process and counselling at the center, he discovered his

potential best matches those demanded in sales and customer service and hence, opted for Auto Sales Consultant course.

Vasuki Sir ne sab sikhaya…

“Shuruwaat mein…”, “In the initial days of the course”, Laxman says, “I was having lack of confidence, poor communication skills and had very little of knowledge of the automobile sector – despite my love for cars. The course introduced me to something called professional grooming standards” “Vasuki Sir ne sab sikhaya…” ~ Vasuki Sir taught me everything… (Mr Vasuki Kulkarni is the Faculty for the Auto Sales Consultant Course at TSSDC, Pune). Without a breath Laxman goes on, “He was available every time. You could approach him in class. And outside. He helped me develop presentation skills, posturing and being aware. Also the importance of “customer need analysis’ and the need for ‘effective probing’. As for Life skills such as ‘relationship management’ and ‘grit’, the YDM took care of it.”

Laxman has today, secured a job at Panchajanya Motors, Tata Motors Dealership, as a Sales Consultant. Barely a few months in the field and this consultant has become the top performer, across categories at his dealership. Or as Laxman puts it, “Be it [the sales of] Tata Bolt, Tata Tigor, Tata Tiago or Tata Hexa, Main top pe hun! (I’m on top!)”

Schneider European multinational Schneider Electric is a global specialist in energy management. Not only is it involved in similar skills development programmes elsewhere in India, Schneider joined hands with Tata STRIVE and provided the necessary support, during this time in October 2015.

MSSDS MSSDS (Maharashtra State Skill Development Society) is the Single Nodal Agency for planning, coordination,execution & monitoring of Skill Development Initiative of Government of Maharashtra. The society is set up with the government's vision of equipping 45 million persons with employable skills by the year 2022. Tata STRIVE along with MSSDS came together, to this effect, during this time in the September of 2016.

Siemens Siemens has been a noted provider of training in the field of Automation & Drives across locations in Mumbai. So when Siemens and Tata STRIVE came together (during this time, that time), the impact on youth was further enriched, most notably with the Youth Development Modules. 10,000 micro entrepreneurs to get skill training Centre will provide training to 10,000 entrepreneurs on various business models and skills under Mudra scheme, an ambitious scheme to provide financial assistance to micro-entrepreneurs.

WorldSkills CEO calls India to hold skill competitions

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday appealed to the private sector to channel some of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds towards the development of yoga and Ayurveda. Inaugurating the first All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi, Modi said his government was working to establish an Ayurveda hospital in every district.

India must follow the example of countries like Russia and China by holding skill competitions, starting at school level, to realise its rich demographic dividend and boost vocational education, WorldSkills International CEO David Hoey said The CEO believes that India's huge youth population is a challenge as well as an opportunity. "India has to clearly have a united, non-bureaucratic, non-political strategy that commits the country to skills development," he added. via Outlook India
