exploratory bamboo products for cafeteria space
The project is an ongoing collaboration between a craft community and the material Bamboo and investigates towards exploring the material in contemporary context for home and retail spaces. The project dealt with exploring the material Bamboo, within the context of craft community ‘Kotwalia’ in the Gujarat state in India, where the material is available locally to the skilled community.
The products generated were outcome after many iterations, explorations and trials to seek for new ways of manipulating the material, and by doing so moving away from traditional ways of processing the material, which seems to give a certain stereotyped perception of Bamboo and thus reducing it towards being known for inferior quality and associations with decorative handicrafts, within Indian context.

Exploratory new technique based craft product intervention
Guide
Prof.Amresh Panigrahi
The serving tray is a result of creating a composite surface with bamboo crossectional units joined together using industrial adhesives and bamboo interlockings and the surface is defined with the fuction to be used for keeping and serving food items.
For providing support on either edges and value addition, brass is used as a complimentary material radii manipulated with designed tools to production consistacy.
The paper napkin holder explores the technique to generate a conical surface/form which through ideations and defining the utility, resulted in a clam shell form with brass joinaries which lets the user to adjust the opening and stress and due to the faceted form, can be oriented on the surface in various ways and acts to the multisensorial engagment with the users and potential consumers
The surfaces and technique were further explored for creating cafe based utility products including serving tong, Cutlery holder, spoons and folks which had a better chance towards under FMCD (Fast Moving Consumer Durables) towards market viability and economic benefit to the makers
System based mapping
The infographic shows the livelihood linkages and maps the critcal and opportunites, afer detailed ethnographic, organisaton & skill reseaches were carried out towards primary research studies
The project’s inital point was to explore the policies and goals defned by Gujarat govt. towards the beterment and growth of the tribal communites residing in Gujarat and link it with the support, the sponsor organisaton was ofering to aid towards and also seek for areas to investgate into
critcal areas skill based
After the initial mock up successes, the futher direction was to develop paper models and quick MDF mockups which futher aided in the product development process and defining the form and fuctional features which were eventually created using bamboo as the material.
The technique created a no. of directions towards product development within the context of hospitality space towards lighting and furniture product development.
Flat pack stool/side table
The Technique led to the development of a fat pack stool/table which is a alight weight seatng utlising hollow bamboo surface & leg modules and easy dovel joinary defnes the portability aspect & aids in ease of transporaton in a tourist market context

Unisex adornment inspired from Steampunk subculture
The unisex adornment is a result of mapping and taking inspiration from a subculture ‘Steampunk’ and its values, to create forms that reflect these desired notions by researching and mapping the culture through incorporating the design processes of mapping and creating mood/look board.
The adornment forms are an exploratory concept that evokes the notion of Steampunk’s functional and mechanism based visual language and presents them in the form of pendants which could be adorned on the neck and express the wearer’s persona.
Research
Insight mapping board
Research on ‘Punk’ & ‘Steampunk’ culture & derive keywords to fuel the creative process of board development
The research was translated through careful selection of the images composed systematically with trigger elements and strong keywords to direct the form development and material manipulation
Ideation
The concepts were ideated to resonate with key words and visual defined on the mood board and to seek for possible forms that could be achieved with metal scmitting tools and processes
Prototyping
