Needs Continued from B20 Eight months later Wolfe says owning the store has been positive. “It’s been great so far,” he said. “We’ve done pretty well with the place, changed up everything in here (reorganizing the interior of the store). Moved everything around.” As far as products, customers can expect a similar range of items to what they’ve found at Trotter’s for nearly a half century, according to Wolfe. He noted fishing and camping supplies take over a majority of sales during the summer, with gun sales dropping off after hunting season. “We’ve got minnows, crickets, bee moth (larvae), red worms and night crawlers,” Wolfe said of fishing bait. The store also features many accessories for those looking to enjoy a boat weekend on the lake. “We’ve got all the intertubes for boating, and skis and knee boards, wake boards, anything like that,” Wolfe noted. Asked if anything has changed in relation to the products Trotter’s offers since the sale, Wolfe answered, “Not really, we’ve got Craw Dawg (Custom Jigs) and Touchdown (jigs), and we do have the bowfishing stuff. “That’s a pretty good seller, our bowfishing stuff,” he said. Along with hunting, fishing and camping equipment, the store also includes a bow shooting range. There’s also the taxidermy of prize fish catches on the walls, but Wolfe said a neighbor of his in Carlisle — Dalyn Alexander — does that and he can hook up customers for the service. “I have a guy that does it for me,” he said. Back in October, Wolfe said that his and his wife’s (Alannah) purchase of Trotter’s came about because of “a long time” friendship with Trotter and an affinity for the store where he had come for several years as a customer. “We just heard about it and that it was for sale,” Wolfe said. “We just stopped in and were talking, and it just grew from there, and, the next thing we knew, we’re purchasing it. “(The store’s) going to be open full-time here,” he noted then of the regular business hours of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Enjoy a diner burger at home

Diners are a popular place to gather with friends and family for a hearty and often inexpensive meal. Many diners boast specialty items, but nearly every diner has hamburgers on its menu, and diner burgers are often made to perfection. But hamburger enthusiasts don’t need to head out to a local diner when craving a diner-style burger. Thanks to the following recipe for a Hamburger With All the Fixins from Jennifer Joyce’s “Diner” (Ryland, Peters & Small), you can now enjoy a diner-style hamburger from the comforts of your own dinner table. Hamburger With All the “Fixins” Serves 4

1 pound ground beef or ground sirloin 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 thick-seeded buns or Kaiser rolls Fixins 4 tablespoons mayonnaise 4 pieces crisp iceberg lettuce 4 thin beefsteak tomato slices 16 pickle slices or peppadew peppers 4 paper-thin slices red onion Yellow mustard and ketchup

French fries, to serve

In a medium bowl, mix the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into four equal-sized burger patties. Heat a grill pan or skillet until very hot. Lightly toast the buns and set aside. Season the burgers on both sides. Panfry the burgers over medium heat for about 3 minutes on each side for medium; cook slightly longer for well done. Alternatively, you can cook everything on an outdoor barbecue. Spread the mayonnaise and a little mustard on the bottom of each bun. Lay down a piece of lettuce and top with a burger. Squirt some ketchup on each and top with the tomatoes, pickle and onions. Top with the other side of the bun. Serve with french fries. PC135182

Water Continued from B18 “To work correctly,” the Coast Guard’s website states, “a life jacket must be worn, fit snugly, and not allow the child’s chin or ears to slip through.” They should also be within easy reach. “You must be able to put them on in a reasonable amount of time in an emergency (vessel sinking, on fire, etc.),” the website states. “They should not be stowed in plastic bags, in locked or closed compartments or have other gear stowed on top of them.” In addition, the Coast Guard recommends filing a float plan, which provides information on where those enjoying the water will be at what times. “(T)here are just too many facts that need to be accurately remembered and ultimately conveyed in an emergency situation,” the agency’s website states. “Without a float plan you are counting on someone else, a friend, neighbor, or family member to remember detailed information that rescue personnel need in order to find you. Information that can make a difference in the outcome.” The Coast Guard also cautions against operating boats while drinking alcohol or using drugs. The agency’s website states that one third of recreational boating fatalities are linked to operating watercraft while intoxicated. “Every boater needs to understand the risks of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs (BUI),” it continues. “It is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in every state.” More information is available at www.uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/index.php?m=rb.

REX roster filled with Terre Haute twist

LAKELINES 2016 • Wednesday, May 25 • Page B54

Times staff report

The Terre Haute REX have finalized their 2016 roster with several recognizable names, as the Prospect League franchise looks to defend its 2015 summer college wooden bat league championship starting this week. Two left-handed hitters from Terre Haute North will be making their REX debuts this summer, as Ball State redshirt freshman Zach Milam and current Patriot senior T.J. Collett will be performing in their hometown. Both players were key figures in North’s state finals run in 2014, and Collett helped the Patriots to return to the championship game again last June. Milam sat out last spring at Ball State as a redshirt after joining the Cardinals as a preferred walk-on and has played well in a reserve role this season. Collett, who has signed to play for the University of Kentucky next year, is taking advantage of a new Prospect League rule which allows each franchise to have two highly-qualified recent high school graduates on their rosters. Previously, only players who had already attended college and had eligibility remaining were able to play in the league. Collett has received numerous national honors and has been chosen for several pre-season All-American teams this year. “I am excited for Zach and T.J. to be a part of the REX this season,” said Bruce Rosselli, REX partner/general manager. “Zach is a great kid and has great upside, and he should fit right in after his season with Ball State. “T.J. is someone I was thinking about last season when the Prospect League board discussed and voted on this rule change,” said Rosselli, who is the president of the league’s board of directors. “You have to be highly ranked in the nation to qualify for playing for the REX, and with T.J.’s high school honors, unless he is drafted and signs professionally, this will be a great opportunity for him to broaden his development and progress to the next level at UK next fall.” Leading the returning players from last summer are Terre Haute South grad Damon Olds and Ethan Larrison of Shelbyville, who are both playing for Indiana State this spring.

S U L L I V A N

Olds will be playing his third straight summer for the REX, while Larrison will be in his second year on the squad. Joining them is pitcher Matt Weissheier of Hofstra, who will also be playing for the second year. Olds pitched in 21 games last summer in the regular, all in relief, with a 4-1 record and a 3.25 ERA with one save. He struck out 35 hitters and walked just 12. Larrison pitched in nine games during the regular season, recording a 5-1 record and a 1.83 ERA. He struck out 31 hitters and walked 16, and had his most important outing of the summer in the championship game of the playoffs. With the REX leading the best-of-three series 1-0, Larrison took the mound and no-hit the West Virginia Miners for the first six innings. Evan Miller came on in relief, and the team got a clutch two-run double from Korie Vire to record a 3-1 victory and claim the league crown. Weissheier pitched in 13 innings, recording a 1-1 record and a 3.75 ERA. “We are pleased to have back three pitchers from last year’s champions,” Rosselli said. “They were all very valuable, and they know what it takes to be successful in this league. Pitcher Jacob Murray of Central Arkansas (formerly of Wabash Valley College) was on the REX for the first half of last season. Two other 2016 REX members, infielder Rey Perez of Florida International and outfielder Manual DeJesus of Ohio University, had signed with the team last year but were unable to play due to injury. Besides Olds and Larrison, the other two REX players from Indiana State (allowable under the limit of four per franchise from the same college) are freshman pitcher Triston Polley of Brownsburg and outfielder Chris Ayers of Westfield. The REX will open their season playing the first five games of the season on the road, due to Indiana State hosting the Missouri Valley Conference tournament at Bob Warn Field. The season opener is May 26 at Chillicothe, and the home opener is June 1 against Hannibal. *** REX notes — The 28-player roster consists of play-

ers originating from 14 different states (West Virginia, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, South Dakota, Texas, Florida, New York, California and Nevada). Three players are coming to the REX from Loyola Marymount, where former REX manager Ronnie Prettyman is an assistant coach. Another player comes from North Florida, where former ISU director of baseball operations Brent McNeil is a volunteer assistant coach. McNeil will be the manager of the Prospect League’s new Lafayette franchise. The team will again have an international flavor, as players are also on the roster from Venezuela, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Canada. The team’s complete roster is available at rexbaseball.com. All REX games will be broadcast this season on the Internet at rexbaseball.com and also on radio for the first time via The Fan at 1130 AM and 99.5 FM. Two franchises departed from the Eastern Division of last year’s 12-team league, Richmond and Jamestown (N.Y.), and were replaced in the league by the Lafayette Aviators and the DuPage Drones of Lisle, Ill. DuPage was added to the Western Division, with the second-year Kokomo Jackrabbits franchise moving to the Eastern Division. Lafayette will play in the Eastern Division. The REX and the three geographically closest Prospect League franchises — the Danville Dans, Kokomo and Lafayette — will admit season ticket holders free of charge from each of the other three franchises.

Sullivan County Park and Lake offers a unique round of golf By DENNIS CLARK news.sdt@gmail.com If you’re seeking a round of golf replete with country club amenities, the course at the Sullivan County Park and Lake is not the venue. “It’s not doing too bad for a goat patch,” SCPL golf manager Larry Walters joked. Seriously, Walters readily admits the 9-hole course is “a minimal facility.” One unique aspect of the course is its greens, which are composed of — wait for it — brick dust. That is actually an improvement from previous years, Walters noted, when the greens consisted of — wait for it, again — sand. “I had a background in Little League, and we used brick dust on the infields,” he recalled. “After a half-hour of heavy rain, you can play. This was a cheap way to solve our problem. When the greens get hard, you can actually putt on them.” While that scenario might scare off a golf purist, the price might bring you right back. Walters said the price to play all day is just $7. He added the cost for a season pass is $150 for one person, with a $200 cost for a couple. See GOLF on B60

Continued from B56 “We currently have between 40 and 50 season pass players,” Walters noted. “We’re a lot cheaper than the Sullivan Elks,” he observed. “The only other cost is the gate fee (for entrance to the park). We also have four golf carts available for players.” Walters said the course has a total distance of 2,289 yards. Of the nine holes, all are par-4, except for one par-

5 and two par-3s. Par for the course is 35 strokes. “We get quite a few people to play,” Walters said. A popular event at the course is night golfing, according to Walters, which had a turnout of nine teams recently. The next one is set for June 18. The course is open April 15 through the end of October, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Plenty of golf in the Wabash Valley We are very fortunate in the Wabash Valley to have 21 different courses to play, all within a 45-minute drive.

Courses available are challenging, such as the nearby Sullivan Elks, Hulman Links and Idle Creek. Easier courses include Marks Par 3 and Hoosier Hills, in Cory. Pricing for most courses range from the low $20s to the mid-$30s for a round. There are several 9-hole and 18-hole courses to choose from, each having their own particular obstacles and challenges for all golfers. If you play the same course all the time, try some of these different courses listed on Page B57.
