Times file photo The Sullivan High School Arrowettes march in last yearʼs Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival parade. This yearʼs parade begins at 1 p.m. Saturday.

By HAROLD BOSSTICK news2.sdt@gmail.com Once again, one of the main attractions at the Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival on Saturday will be the annual parade, kicking off at 1 p.m. along Section Street in Sullivan. And, like most years, organizer Cindy Cox said the parade is still growing in the number of floats and other entries. “I get more everyday,” she said. “We normally have around a hundred entries each year, and I’ll get a lot of them next week. A lot of people wait until the last minute to get those in.” As in past years, Cox noted this year’s parade includes

marching bands from North Central and Sullivan high schools; police cars and fire engines; and representatives from local organizations, businesses and churches. Also amongst the entries in this year’s parade is the Chicago-based South Shore Drill Team, which is a program that helps inner-city youth avoid gangs and crime by engaging them in performing arts. “We’ve had them in a few times in the past, and we haven’t had them for several years,” Cox said. “They were actually supposed to have come last year, and they had transportation issues and their bus broke down on the way here and they couldn’t get here. Continued from B3 “I have people ask for them every year, so I think people really like to see them” Cox added. “And it’s a really good program.” New this year, however, is how the parade will begin — with a literal bang. Musical entertainment organizers have reached a deal to launch fireworks after performances Friday and Saturday night, but, included in that is setting off a cannon blast when the parade begins and when it ends. And, as has been the case at several past parades, Cox said organizers are asking people walking in the parade to pass out candy and other goodies to kids rather than tossing it in the streets.

This is an effort to keep children clear of wheels and other heavy and dangerous parts of some entries. “That’s really important,” she said. “We don’t like the kids out in the street. And, if they can hand it out, it keeps the kids on the sidewalks.” For those who will march in the parade, this year will feature an alternative start, necessitated by a home volleyball game at SHS. “They (entrants) will still come to the same place, the parking lot ... in front of the football field. And then ... the way it is right now, we’ll plan to bring them in off of Section Street and take them out onto Wolfe Street.” From there, the parade will continue down Section Street to Jay’s Auto World.

What is the Rotary Club?

Times staff report Behind the parade, carnival and corn, the Sullivan Rotary Club #3450 works to make the annual Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival go off without a hitch. Chartered on Feb. 23, 1924, the club is involved with several local charities and fundraisers for Sullivan County community groups. It has been around for over 90 years. These include the Hospice of the Wabash Valley’s Tulip Fundraiser; The Wabash Valley Community Foundation’s Dictionary Project, which gives every county third-grader a dictionary; sponsoring Sullivan High School’s annual scholarship and awards ban-

quet; and the United Way of the Wabash Valley’s Real Men Read campaign, which has volunteers read aloud to elementary students. These are only a few such activities. The national organization, Ro-

tary International, is made up of 33,000 clubs in more than 200 countries. “Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organization’s more than 1.2 million

Contributed photo The Van-Dells will perform Friday night at the Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival, starting at 7 p.m.

Continued from B6 “Anthony Adams is a very special case for us,” McGlasson added. “He is from Sullivan. He graduated from Sullivan High School a number of years ago ... There’s just nothing better than just having a great musical talent come, but having somebody from Sullivan.” For more on the group, go to www.anthonyadams.net. THE VAN-DELLS Friday Also returning to the stage this year is The Van-Dells. Touted as the “the nation’s (No.) 1 ’50s and ’60s rock and roll tribute show,” the group features a five piece band and lead singers Mark Barnett, Stacy “Duke” Todd and Steve “Moose” Ricks. “The Van-Dells have been called ‘The 3 Stooges set to music’ with a fun show that’s good for the whole family,” the website continues.

This particular band has been a crowd favorite many times, and McGlasson said they had many people ask for them to be brought back. “We did not have them last year, but we got so many requests ...” he continued. “Each time we don’t have them, we get so many requests.” For more information on the group, visit www.van-dells.com. CARSON WILLIS Saturday (3 p.m.) Once again, between the parade and the main music act of the day, Willis will perform for Corn Festival attendees. “He played last year, and the crowd was extremely appreciative,” McGlasson said. “And his musicianship has only improved.” WHO’S BAD? THE ULTIMATE MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE BAND Saturday On the festival’s ultimate night, attendees will be treated to the hits of Michael Jackson thanks to Who’s

Bad? The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band. “Their power-packed performance of Michael Jackson’s expansive catalog has ignited crowds on every continent and can only be described as a jaw-dropping, musical must-see,” the group’s website states. “As the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band, and the only one to predate his untimely passing, Who’s Bad has awed even the skeptics ...” And McGlasson said that organizers hope the group, which has performed “literally all over the world,” will draw in the late musician’s fanbase. “We want to appeal to all ages, and a Michael Jackson tribute band is going to pull a slightly younger audience...” he said. “I think it will appeal to everyone — Michael Jackson is just an (iconic) sound.” To find out more about the tribute show, check out www.whosbadmusic.com.

By HAROLD BOSSTICK news2.sdt@gmail.com Organizers of this year’s Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival parade have named a Sullivan High School engineering and automotive team the grand marshals to celebrate their third-straight victory at an annual national competition. Members of the SHS Super Mileage Team will march in Saturday’s parade, which begins at 1 p.m., along Section Street. “They have done such a great job and have competed against teams that have much larger budgets than what they have and have won three years in a row,” said parade organizer Cindy Cox. “So we are just very proud of them and we thought they should be recognized.”

“It’s a huge honor,” added the team’s sponsor and SHS instructor Brian Wagaman. “It will be a good experience for the kids.” This April, the team competed in the Shell Ecomarathon Americas competition in Detroit, which has teams enter prototype vehicles and try to reach the highest possible miles per gallon. There, their diesel-powered prototype car scored a run of 1,436 mpg, beating out the second-place Wawasee High School team from Syracuse, Ind., whose vehicle registered 1,227 mpg. This was after the team set a world record score — 1,899 mpg — in 2014 with that vehicle. This year’s slate of competitors at the annual challenge included various high schools and colleges from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and South and Central America.

Times file photo Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival attendees line up to receive free ears of corn during the annual Corn Feed. This yearʼs feed begins after the parade on Saturday.

Times staff report The Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival isn’t just a name — it tells you what you can expect to find once Saturday gets in stride. Annually, the Sullivan Rotary Club offers its Corn Feed and corn eating contests once the parade — set to begin at 1 p.m. this year — reaches its end. The Corn Feed offers free ears, along with all of the fixings,

as well as soda, to festival patrons just outside the Sullivan County Courthouse on its lawn. The near 1,000 ears of corn that Rotary members serve up are shucked by the Sullivan Beta Club that morning. Later, kids young and old, can compete in the corn-eating contest, in which participants try to eat as many ears of corn as they can in the minute allotted for each heat.

The contest is divided into five groups: boys 12-years-old and under, girls 12-years-old and under, men 13-years-old and above, women 13-years-old and above and a Sullivan County High School Team competition, in which teams of three selected by schools (North Central and Sullivan high schools and Dugger Union Community School) participated. Prizes will be given out to the winners.

good working relationship (with the Sullivan Rotary Club), and as long as that relationship continues I don’t plan on going anywhere. “(In a smaller town), you get to know people, and when you come back the next year it’s like you never left,” Schoendienst said. “A festival like this is great for any city this size because it brings a lot of people to town.” See FAMILY on B21

Times staff report It just wouldn’t be a Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival without the allure of the carnival rides and food. For the seventh consecutive year, Belleville, Ill.-based Luehrs’ Ideal Rides will be the purveyor of excitement for both young and old alike.

“We have a full array of rides and attractions,,” Luehrs’ President Andy Schoendienst said last year. “We’re excited to come there. We enjoy Sullivan. When I see that many people trying to do right by the city, it makes us want to do the same. “We have an array of kiddie rides and family rides for young

and the young at heart and teenage rides,” he said. A couple new rides that weren’t present last year include the Centrifuge, which has appeared “at a couple state fairs,” according to Schoendienst, and Frog Hopper for younger kids. See RIDES on B23

Times file photo A turtle crawls his way to the finish line in last yearʼs Tim Olson Futurity Turtle Derby, an annual feature of the Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival. This yearʼs derby begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Times staff report It may not be a show of speed and horsepower, but a traditional race has long been a part of the Sullivan Rotary Corn Festival and honors a former organizer. The Tim Olson Futurity Turtle Derby is set to start at 11 a.m. Saturday — prior to the festival’s parade begining at 1 p.m. — in the parking lot next to Sullivan SurgiCenter at the site of the old Mary Sherman Hospi-

tal. “The Derby starts right before the parade, so you can see both events,” said Rotary Club member Jordan Orwig last year. The derby will feature 10 turtles this year, which will race in several heats based on how many are sponsored. Sponsorship costs $10 per turtle or $8 each for multiple entries and can be made at several Sullivan businesses: Fifth Third Bank, Questar

Capital, Springer Insurance and Ohio Valley Gas. Each heat will have all turtles placed in the center of a circle, and the winner is the first to cross the outer line. After the event, the turtles are donated to local classrooms. The derby is named for Tim Olson, who was well known amongst Sullivan businesses for seeking sponsorships for the turtles through the Rotary and Jaycees organizations.

Continued from B17 The relationship between Luehrs’ and the Sullivan Rotary began in a “one door opens when one door closes” kind of fashion. The company had a five-year contract with a festival in Alton, Ill. In the midst of the contract, festival officials in Alton advised Schoendienst that “we really like you but we’re defunct” due to financial problems. “(Current Rotary president) Jon Bobbitt called me and asked, ‘You wouldn’t happen to have these dates open?’” he said. “And I said, ‘My gosh, we do.’” That serendipity has led to a six-year relationship between Luehrs’ and the Corn Festival. “Everybody on the Rotary is unbelievable,” Schoendienst said. “My stress level goes down considerably (while in Sullivan). “When your neighbor has a clean front porch, you want to do the same,” he added. “And we try to do that.” Luehrs’ has a nearly 60-year history of providing festival rides, with Schoendienst’s father-in-law Herbert “Hub” Luehrs purchasing Ideal Rides in 1956. Schoendienst and his wife, Lorelei, purchased the company in 1996. “(The Corn Festival) is actually an infant for us,” Schoendienst said. Schoendienst himself has a long history with carnivals, going back to working with them as early as 12-years old. His destiny was somewhat chosen for him after graduating from St. Louis University with an aircraft engineering degree. He had a Monday interview with FedEx in Memphis for a position to utilize his degree. “I had amusement rides prior to getting married,” Schoendienst said, noting a call days before the interview with a request for him “to make a jump” or deliver rides. He made the jump, couldn’t get a flight back in time for the interview and “it didn’t stop from there,” he noted. “It’s like a clan,” Schoendienst said. “You get to know every-

one across the nation.” He is also tied by family to another strong clan that has many supporters in Sullivan — Cardinals Nation. Schoendienst’s uncle is Red, the longtime player, manager and coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. Asked if he ever met

Stan Musial, he said, “Oh god yes, we used to have Thanksgiving with Stan, Red, mom and dad, and the whole gang.” Such relationships continued prior to Musial’s passing early last year for Schoendienst’s son Andrew, the Luehrs’ office manager.

“Stan always had Andrew go get his harmonica for him,” he said. The busy season for the Schoendiensts run from April to mid-October, leaving little time to catch Cardinals games in person. However, they spend winters near

Jupiter, Fla., the spring training home of the Cardinals, and catch up with Red and the team there. “He’s still sharp as a tack,” Schoendienst said. “He can tell a story. (Cardinals Manager Mike) Matheny and that whole group, Red’s kind of their mentor.”
