COLLABORATION HELPS RESIDENTS ACHIEVE DREAMS OF BECOMING TEACHERS

Sullivan BOCES, in collaboration with the MidHudson School Study Council and Mount Saint Mary College, has initiated an exciting new program designed to help residents achieve their dream of becoming teachers This innovative partnership aims to address the growing need for qualified educators in our county while providing a clear pathway for aspiring teachers to receive the education and training they need

The program is structured to accommodate a variety of individuals, including high school graduates, career changers, and paraprofessionals already working in schools who wish to obtain their teaching certification By combining the resources and expertise of Sullivan BOCES, the Mid-Hudson School Study Council (MHSSC), and Mount Saint Mary College (MSM), participants will have access to a variety of support to help guide them through the process.

On June 4, an informational session was held to give participants an overview of the program, available resources, and the opportunity to talk to the staff at Mount Saint Mary Since each educational pathway is different, the staff at MSM is working with each person to create a custom plan based on the individual’s existing educational portfolio.

If there are enough people to start a cohort, BOCES has offered to become a satellite location for participants to take some of their required coursework locally From there, they will transition to Mount Saint Mary College to complete their bachelor’s degree and teaching certification Throughout the program, the Mid-Hudson School Study Council will provide additional support, networking opportunities, and access to a community of education professionals

One of the program ’ s key components is the emphasis on practical experience. Participants will start by filling substitute positions, followed by internships and student teaching placements within local schools This allows them to apply their learning in real-world settings and build valuable relationships with educators and administrators This hands-on experience is crucial for developing the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the classroom.

The collaboration between BOCES, the MHSSC, and MSM College is a significant step toward addressing the teacher shortage in our region By investing in local talent and providing a clear pathway to certification, the program aims to create a sustainable pipeline of qualified educators committed to serving their communities

“We are excited to partner with the Mid-Hudson School Study Council and Mount Saint Mary College to offer this program, ” said Robert M Dufour, District Superintendent at Sullivan BOCES “This initiative is about more than just addressing the teacher shortage; it’s about empowering residents to achieve their dreams and make a meaningful impact on our schools and students ”

By fostering collaboration and investing in local talent, BOCES, the MHSSC, and MSM pave the way for a brighter future for our schools and community This innovative program is a testament to their commitment to education and their belief in the potential of every individual to make a difference

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR: INSPIRING INNOVATION

Once again, the middle school science fair was an engaging event that students will remember throughout high school. The fair not only encourages a hands-on approach to learning but also fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students showcased various scientific projects, and others had the opportunity to participate in activities and experiments

Mr Malfetano continues to inspire his students, who presented their experiments, research, and inventions, exploring topics ranging from environmental science and biology to physics and engineering. Throughout the fair, Mr. Malfetano and his helpers conducted several experiments, pulling students from the audience to participate.

The event was a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate their hard work and creativity Parents, teachers, and fellow students marveled at the innovative projects on display The fair was a testament to the students’ curiosity and dedication, from projects that discussed plant growth to creating music to demonstrations of various robotics.

One of the fair’s highlights was a mechanical stake launcher. Under the guidance of Mr Malfetano, students launched a wooden stake from a wooden structure that they built to launch the stakes under pressure, similar to a catapult Another notable project involved a water transport system that could move water from one location to another using a PVC pipe, tubes, and a crank. The science fair also featured interactive booths where attendees could engage in hands-on experiments. These included building simple robotics, interacting with several reptiles, and exploring the science behind tossing a basketball into a hoop These activities made science fun and helped reinforce the concepts the students learned in the classroom The fair concluded with a rocket launch, a favorite among students and staff

“We are so proud of our students’ accomplishments,” said Mr. Malfetano. “Their enthusiasm and dedication to their projects were evident, and it’s exciting to see them apply what they’ve learned in such creative ways Events like this are crucial for inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators ”

THE CLASS OF 2024: CELEBRATING SUCCESS

Sullivan BOCES held its commencement ceremony for the Rubin Pollack Education Center at the Clubhouse at Villa Roma on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Family, teachers, and school administrators honored the fourteen graduates for their educational achievements

Susan A Schmidt, Deputy Superintendent at Sullivan BOCES, welcomed guests and opened the ceremony with an inspirational speech for the graduates. "You have faced challenges over the years, but you turned those obstacles into opportunities. You have experienced tremendous growth and celebrated various successes during your high school journey Your dedication, perseverance, and support network have helped you reach this milestone To the class of 2024, I extend my heartfelt congratulations Cherish the memories you have made, the lessons learned, and the friendships you have forged at Sullivan BOCES. As you embark on this next chapter, embrace the opportunities ahead with the same determination and passion you brought to this moment "

Brian Conaty, Sullivan County District Attorney, was the keynote speaker for the graduation Mr Conaty expressed his honor in addressing the students on this momentous occasion. "Today, we celebrate all you have accomplished and the beginning of a new chapter As you move on to the next phase, some of you will travel the world, while others will stay here to utilize the skills you have learned in school to make a positive change There will also be some who leave the county for a while to continue their education but will return home to help enhance our community."

He spoke of the future, emphasizing that your next decision and the one after that will shape it As Vietnamese peace advocate Thích Nhất Hạnh once said, 'The present moment contains both past and future The secret in transformation is how you handle this moment ' Mr Conaty ended by challenging the graduates to craft their futures with passion and purpose. "Dream big and dare greatly, as nothing is beyond your reach. Every choice you make from here on has the potential to craft a brighter future for all of us Congratulations, graduates!" said Conaty

The ceremony's student speaker was Jesse Guara, a Monticello CSD graduate During his speech, he spoke of his school experience before BOCES and never thought he would get to where he stands tonight "I was always the odd one out. I never did homework and constructed mediocre answers for schoolwork. In the end, poor self-management and low interest drove me to do the bare minimum "

In 2020, he had the chance to enroll in the Alternative Education program at BOCES Guara said, "When this option presented itself, I took it, seeing it as an opportunity to work toward an end goal of success during a time of difficulty. I became something new from this experience and grew with major thanks to the multiple perspectives of my teachers and what they thought could help me best I went on a journey of self-discovery and became something beyond what I could even fathom four years ago " He ended his speech with the statement, "As we come to the close of this ceremony, we look forward to the future for our graduating class, who will pursue great careers and fulfillment in many facets of their lives. May we hold our heads high onto the new horizon of endless possibilities."

Dr Robert M Dufour, District Superintendent at Sullivan BOCES, closed the ceremony with the following remarks: "Congratulations, graduates You have worked hard and overcome numerous obstacles over the years. Your hard work, determination, and perseverance have brought you to this significant milestone." He left the students with a poem from Frederick Amazing to remember when things get tough The Journey of Life - ‘Remember that every step you take, every move you make, leads you closer to your dreams Embrace the future with courage and confidence, knowing that life is a journey, not a destination '

"We are incredibly proud of all you've accomplished and excited to see where your journey takes you next. Keep striving, keep believing, and keep shining," said Dufour

EMPOWERING FUTURES: CAREER & TECH CENTER GRADUATION 2024

On June 20, the Career & Technical Education Center at Sullivan BOCES held its Recognition Ceremony for 283 graduating Career & Tech students at SUNY Sullivan. The fieldhouse buzzed with excitement, cheers, and applause as the graduates walked across the stage to accept their certificates.

Ralph Cherubino, a Livingston Manor Central School District graduate who attended the Allied Health program, was the class speaker He spoke of how the students have reached a significant milestone in their lives and how the class stands on the brink of a new chapter “These past two years have been a journey of growth, discovery, and preparation for our future careers, and none of this would have been possible without the dedication and support of our incredible teachers. The experiences have equipped us with the knowledge and expertise to excel in our respective fields and instilled in us a sense of confidence and pride in our abilities,” said Cherubino

As he concluded, Mr Cherubino left his classmates with the following message: “As we move forward, stepping into the world beyond these walls, we carry with us the lessons the Career & Tech Center taught us. The skills we ’ ve sharpened, the knowledge we ’ ve gained, and the values we ’ ve embraced will serve as the foundation upon which we will build our futures We are ready to tackle the challenges ahead, innovate within our fields, and contribute positively to our communities Today is a celebration of our hard work, determination, and perseverance It’s a day to reflect on the friendships we ’ ve made, the lessons we ’ ve learned, and the dreams we ’ ve nurtured. Remember that our education here has not only prepared us for a career but also a lifetime of learning and growth,” concluded Cherubino.

After Mr Cherubino’s speech, BOCES Board members Carol Park, Jackie Rutledge, Keith Stryker, and Anthony Sinacore presented Ralph Cherubino with the BOCES Board Outstanding Career & Technical Education Student Award In addition to the President's Academic Excellence and Academic Achievement Awards, 31 awards and scholarships were presented to graduates.

During his speech, Jeffrey Molusky, Executive Principal of the Career & Technical Education program at Sullivan BOCES, spoke of the profound growth and transformation he witnessed in each student He referenced how the CTE programs start with raw materials much like the initial stages of crafting bread He stated that each student entered the classrooms, shops, labs, and clinics full of potential yet unrefined

Through the passage of time and the direction of the CTE staff, the graduates evolved into individuals equipped with valuable industry knowledge and skills Like dough shaped and molded under skilled hands, each graduate has overcome challenges, setbacks, and uncertainties, emerging stronger and more resilient. Mr. Molusky concluded with the statement, “As you prepare to embark on the next phase of your journey beyond these walls, remember that your growth does not culminate with today’s celebration. Just as bread matures and develops richer flavors over time, your experiences will enrich your understanding of the world and sharpen your capabilities Embrace challenges with patience and resilience; they will further refine your talents and fortify your character Congratulations on your remarkable achievements May your futures be as fulfilling and impactful as the finest artisanal creations, enriching the lives of those you touch ”

Dr Robert M Dufour, District Superintendent at BOCES, closed the ceremony by highlighting how this class started high school during COVID, wearing masks. He noted that tonight, this class is the first to hold its graduation at SUNY Sullivan. It is the largest graduating class in BOCES history, with 283 graduates. “Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Reach for the stars. I wish you all the best, and everyone at Sullivan BOCES and our school districts is very proud of you, ” concluded Dufour
