Contribution of Sulabh in the field of Sanitation Sulabh International Social Service Organisation, established in 1970, is working incessantly in the field of sanitation and social reform. Sulabh has constructed over 1.3 crore household toilets whereas Government of India has got 90 crore toilets based on Sulabh technology, Sulabh operates and maintains 8,000 public toilets in 1,599 towns and cities in 25 States and 4 Union Territories which are used by 1.5 crore people every day. The experiment is going on outside India as well. Sulabh toilet technology has been adopted in Afghanistan, Bangla Desh, Vietnam, China, Indonesia and 15 African countries. Five Sulabh toilets along with biogas plants are working in Kabul, Afghanistan. BBC-Horizons has recognised Sulabh technology as one among the unique inventions of the world. Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Founder, Sulabh invented Sulabh two-pit toilet technology which led to the end of the practice of carrying night soil on head. Sulabh two-pit environmental compost toilet has been so designed that people belonging to the poor, medium and affluent classes can all get it constructed as the cost as per its various designs is affordable for all these categories and it is appropriate for the needs and choice of the beneficiaries. With its technology of two-pit toilet Sulabh has put an end to the abominable system of scavenging prevalent in the country and has brought people engaged in this inhuman work to the mainstream of society after rehabilitating them. They have been made self-dependent after being trained in various professions. Now these people are well-versed in professions like tailoring, embroidery, preparing eatables like pickles, papads and noodles. They have started celebrating festivals and religious rites along with Brahmins and people of higher classes. Now they are all free from the curse of untouchability.
