This Urban Design Studio project in Seville reimagines the city’s historic and cultural legacy, blending preservation with innovation to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable urban environment. Anchored in Seville’s dense urban fabric, dynamic public spaces, and architectural heritage, the project centers on repurposing the historic glass factory into a cultural and educational hub. Public spaces are revitalized through plazas, courtyards, and a pedestrian spine that connects the site to the broader city fabric, encouraging social interaction and transforming underutilized areas into lively, accessible destinations. A commercial corridor introduces retail spaces, a marketplace, and live-work environments for local artisans, boosting the economy while honoring Seville’s artisanal traditions. Responding to the Mediterranean climate, shaded courtyards, green spaces, and a botanical exhibition mitigate heat and enhance urban biodiversity, improving comfort. A mix of housing typologies, including sustainable and affordable units, ensures inclusivity and integrates modern design with historic charm. This initiative weaves cultural preservation, economic revitalization, and environmental resilience into a multi-functional urban hub, bridging Seville’s past and future. By celebrating heritage and embracing modern opportunities, the project aspires to craft a renewed identity for the city.

Co-housing is a residential model that balances private living spaces with shared communal areas, fostering a strong sense of community and social engagement. While commonly found in suburban or rural settings, it remains largely absent from dense urban cores. However, as Austin experiences rapid population growth and rising housing demand, there is a critical opportunity to integrate co-housing into the city’s fabric. A site survey revealed a lack of greenery and underutilized urban spaces on the north side of the UT campus, highlighting the need for both environmental and social revitalization. In response, this project prioritizes lush vegetation and dynamic public realms that encourage human interaction. The architectural language draws inspiration from the diagonal geometries characteristic of Jean Renaudie’s work, shaping circulation pathways and spatial organization. By intertwining communal programming with a responsive urban framework, this proposal redefines co-housing as an adaptable, socially engaging, and ecologically conscious solution for Austin’s evolving landscape.

In the realm of architecture, the pursuit of a successful design is inherently intertwined with diligent research. Precedents, as reservoirs of knowledge, offer invaluable insights into effective architectural principles, serving as compass points to navigate the possibilities for one’s own projects. The first few weeks of the semester was solely dedicated to the exploration and analysis of a precedent, with a focus on assimilating the design principles of the respective architect. Our comprehensive investigation centered on Wang Shu, recipient of the esteemed Pritzker Prize in 2012, and his creation, the Wa Shan Guesthouse. The time spent studying his architectural process proved invaluable in shaping the conceptualization and development of the proposed community center, which features a curved bamboo roof that mimics the organic form of a wave.

Dougherty Arts Center Expansion

Spring 2024

The Dougherty Arts Center (DAC), once a beacon of creativity and community, now stood weathered and worn. This was the challenge Clyde and I eagerly embraced as we set out to design its expansion. Our first visit to the DAC revealed its run-down state but also sparked our imagination. Stepping into the courtyard, we sensed a potential axis that could breathe new life into the existing Butler buildings. Our vision took shape as we reimagined the gable roofs— merging them into one large gable on one side and a sweeping butterfly roof on the other. We sought to honor the architectural language of the Butler buildings while infusing the expansion with its own distinct identity. At the heart of our design was the preservation and celebration of the courtyard spaces, envisioned as vibrant hubs for local art and community engagement. The decision to remove the intervening spaces between the Butler buildings was pivotal, allowing the courtyards to take center stage. Material choices were guided by a commitment to longevity and integration. Corten steel, with its transformative properties, was selected to harmonize with the aging corrugated metal of the Butler buildings. Over time, oxidation will blur the boundaries between old and new, culminating in a seamless fusion of the two halves.
