“It is not said enough, so I’ll say it again: the world is a good place, full of good people, and when we act out of that, when we act out of hope, and optimism, and faith in our fellow human, we act out of our best selves, and we are capable of doing great things, and of contributing to the greater good.”
- Stuart McLean
Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe has touched so many people’s lives. Whether you sat by the radio on Sunday afternoons, or headed to the theatre to see Stuart live, the adventures of Dave, Morley and their family, were a weekly ritual for countless Canadians. The hope, humour and humanity of Stuart’s stories and his vision for a community of kindness is still carried in so many of our hearts.
The Citadel is thrilled to bring Stuart’s memorable characters to life on our stage. What an incredible opportunity for audiences to finally get to meet Dave, Morley and their neighbours “in person.” We presented a workshop performance of the musical last year and were so excited to see how connected

Jessie & Daryl
audiences were to the story, often laughing before the joke was over because they knew what was coming next (You could almost hear Stuart’s voice saying, “Now, don’t get ahead of me…”) Whether you are a long time Vinyl Cafe fan, or someone coming to the stories for the first time, we are sure you are going to love this musical adaptation.
Developing new work takes a lot of time and a lot of creative people. So many people have contributed over the past few years to bring this show to the stage and we extend our thanks to all of them. We’d especially like to thank Jess Milton, Producer of the Vinyl Cafe radio show for being such a great partner on this adventure and such a great trove of Vinyl Cafe history. And thank you for joining us for this world premiere!
All the best for the holidays!

Daryl Cloran Jessie van Rijn Artistic Director Executive Director
At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you.
We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan – Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands.
Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. We commit to this work through the sharing of resources, ongoing training, the inclusion of Indigenous stories, histories, and experiences in our programming, and by fostering meaningful relationships with the community.
In the spirit of reciprocity and respect, we seek to uphold the original intent of the Treaty and strive to create a shared narrative that honors our responsibility to this land and to each other.

Welcome to the warm and wonderful world of the Vinyl Cafe. A world rooted in kindness, connection, and the laughter of recognition. This project started where most ideas start. It started with a “what if.” Or a series of what ifs:
What if we took Stuart McLean’s stories and turned them into a musical?
What if we never had to say goodbye to these characters so many people grew to love over the years?
What if we could breathe new life into them?
Once those questions took root, it was hard to stop asking more: What would they sound like? What would move them to song?
Soon, our questions became a conversation. Because it wasn’t just Stuart’s voice anymore, or ours. One voice – Stuart’s – had grown to three. Then we added composer Colleen Dauncey and lyricist Akiva Romer-Segal. Three became five. Then Georgina Escobar joined as bookwriter. Five became six. Our questions had become conversation.
And then the actors came in. The music director. The band. Suddenly, it wasn’t a conversation anymore, it was a song. And the song kept growing. Designers. Crew. Each new voice changed the sound, added texture, meaning, perspective, harmony. And when you have that many voices? Well, you’ve got a choir.
And that felt exactly right. Because the Vinyl Cafe has always been about connection, community, and celebrating all the things we share: the desire to find the perfect gift, the ache of being away from family at Christmas, the difficulty of defrosting a turkey with a hairdryer (you’ve done that too, right?).
Seeing these beloved characters step out of the radio and onto the stage has made us feel like we’re coming home for the holidays. We hope it feels that way to you, too.
Thank you for being here, and for adding your voice to the choir. It feels so good to be singing together again.
- Jess Milton & Daryl Cloran

Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing shows – Students Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton.
Before select mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew – diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life.

The score for Vinyl Cafe: The Musical explores several musical genres and styles, giving lots of creative room for storytelling through dance and movement. Before seeing the show, Students Club participants will work with the Vinyl Cafe choreographer, Gianna Vacirca, to hear about her creative process and learn a few moves from the show!
Gianna is an actor, dancer, and choreographer. She is also an Italian pastaia and the creator of Bell’uovo, a bespoke naturally colourful handmade pasta business based here in Edmonton.

THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS IN THE CREATION OF THEATRE AT THE CITADEL:
THE HOLE FAMILY • THE ELDON AND ANNE FOOTE FUND
MACLAB DEVELOPMENT GROUP • THE JOHN AND BARBARA POOLE FAMILY FUND
THE JOSEPH H. SHOCTOR FUND
DR. JOSEPH H. SHOCTOR, 1922-2001
EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AND FOUNDER OF THE CITADEL THEATRE
JOE’S VISION brought professional theatre to Edmonton
JOE’S DREAM built the Citadel Theatre
JOE’S SPIRIT continues to inspire the theatre we create today
JOE’S LEGACY lives on through a generous gift to the Citadel from his estate
On the Citadel’s 30th Anniversary, a gift was made by the Company of Harry Hole, James F. Hole, Ralph K. Hole and Robert W. Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole. The Citadel Theatre is proud to honour Henry Hole’s integrity, compassion and leadership in the dedication of this complex to his memory.

Accessible Performances

THANK YOU! WE EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT THANKS to all our donors, whose generosity plays a crucial role in ensuring our community has the opportunity to experience performing arts. Our donors have a profound and lasting impact on the quality, accessibility, and relevance of the Citadel’s productions, facility, and educational offerings.
