Man watching missing girl arrested in Sugar Land From Staff Reports

The man who reported a Houston girl missing was arrested in Fort Bend County. According to the Houston Police Department, Derion Vence, the former fiancé of the mother of missing 4-yearold Maleah Davis and the last person known to have seen

the girl, was arrested Saturday at his brother’s house in Sugar Land. HPD said Vence has been charged with tampering with evidence – namely a human corpse – in the 180th State District Court. Prosecutors said in court documents that Vence could face additional charges, including murder, and that trained dogs detected

the scent of human decomposition in Vence’s vehicle Sugar Land Police Department spokesperson Doug Adolph said SLPD responded to a call May 5 at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital after Vence arrived with fresh injuries claiming he was the victim of a roadside attack that had occurred the day before in Houston. Vence, who

also reported Davis missing on May 5, was initially questioned and released to HPD by Sugar Land PD. “During our initial interview, the man’s story changed several times,” Adolph said. According to HPD, Vence said he was with Davis and

Retail center making its way to Sugar Land By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Residents of Sugar Land as well as the New Territory and Telfair master-planned communities could soon have a new retail center in their backyard. According to Brett Levinson, assistant vice president for Weitzman, the commercial real estate firm represents a client that intends to build a nearly 15,500 square-foot shopping center near the intersection of Highway 90 and Easton Avenue. “We’re really trying to find what the void is in this area and see if we can go after filling it,” Levinson said. Weitzman, which does project leasing, tenant representation, property management and development, also handles leasing for additional properties in the Sugar Land and Telfair area. It began pre-leasing for the newest property – coined Shops at New Territory – in recent weeks. “We’ve looked at bringing in restaurants, service users, medical services, things like that,” Levinson said. “Once we get a certain amount of spaces pre-leased, construction will start. Spaces could deliver in late 2019 or first quarter of 2020, contingent on the pre-leasing activity.” Sitting in proximity to the new Sugar Land H-E-B near the intersection of Highway 90 and Highway 6, Levinson

Marshall boys continue school's state dominance on track By Bill McCaughey FOR THE FORT BEND STAR

There was lightning and thunder all around Austin last Friday night. Inside Mike A. Myers Stadium, Marshall High School track coach Lloyd Banks unleashed his own brand of lightning as the Buffalos’ boys team thundered to its fourth Class 5A track and field state championship in five years. “It is an unbelievable feeling,” said Marshall runner Dalevon Campbell, a member of all three winning relays. “Our team came out and executed.” The Buffalos won five of their seven events, scoring their first points in the 400-meter relay. The team of Campbell, Devon Achane, Korey King and Bryson Stubblefield, who ran the fastest

high school time in the nation this year during the Region III-5A meet, posted a winning time Friday of 40.24 seconds. Stubblefield followed with a third-place finish in the 100. Then he and his relay teammates set a 5A state record with a winning time of 1:23.38 in the 800 relay. Marshall and Lancaster, which was in second place at that point, competed head-tohead in the final three races to decide the state championship. First up was the 300 hurdles, in which Marshall’s Matthias Petterway won in 37.35 seconds while Lancaster From L to R: Marshall’s 400- and 800-meter first place relay team members Dalevon came in fourth. Tyler Wallace and his family were driving home to Sugar Land last summer when they found themselves in the midst of a dust storm outside Vernon in northwest Texas. Traffic on U.S. Highway 287 was stopped and range of vision was limited. As a small church van

pulled over to wait out the storm, the Wallace family saw an 18-wheeler slam into the back of it, pushing the van through a barbed wire fence and into a field. Wallace and his mother, Bailey, yelled to his father, Bo, to pull over so they could help. Inside the van were a pastor, his wife, three of his grown children and his baby granddaughter, some of whom had been injured in the crash.

“It was completely slammed and there were still people in it and there was one guy who was crying on the side of the van,” Tyler said. “I jumped up from my seat, got to the door of my RV, almost jumped out before the vehicle pulled to a stop; yelling at my mom to get the first aid bag. “I didn’t feel panic,” he
