EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 40 • Number 6 JUNE 2021 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter

Stafford MSD class of 2021 is one of a kind There’s no doubt this has been a trying year for many of the area’s students, and it’s been no different for the group of students we are profiling in this month’s cover story. The students of all area graduating classes have written their own story. And as I spoke with Stafford High School alumnus and current principal Raymond Root about this particular group of Stafford High School graduating seniors, his pride in them and their accomplishments was palpable – and it’s for good reason. What these students have battled through is a small part of the story, but the bigger story is what they have accomplished to define the year in their own way instead of allowing it to define them. The class had 10 of its graduates receive an Associate’s Degree from Houston Community College, and eight of them received a Level 1 Certification in Film/Video Specialization from HCC – all before walking the stage at graduation. I also got the chance to profile this year’s

valedictorian and salutatorian, and let me tell you – the workforce and community beyond the Stafford High School walls are going to be gaining two prime students and people by all accounts. Leonardo Hernandez Tienda (valedictorian) and Sally Huang have both excelled on both the academic and athletic fronts during their time in SMSD, but that’s not all they brought to the table. From a glance at their community service records, these are two people who also care deeply about the people in their community and have a desire to give back to it to the best of their capabilities. So in the end, instead of focusing on the obstacles, let’s focus on the accomplishments of the students in our area and their resiliency. Take a look inside today for the names of every single Stafford High graduate in the class of 2021 and how they have written their own story. And if you see them on the stage or in the community, make sure to congratulate them. They deserve it this year more than ever.

Treatment for Seizures

Seizures are specific symptoms of different health conditions that can cause the loss of consciousness and convulsions. Epileptic Seizures are conditions that affect an individual’s brain and body due to abnormal activity of brain cells that control various functions. When a person has had multiple seizures due to abnormal brain activity they are considered to have the condition known as epilepsy. A seizure may only strike one time in some people, such as young children with fever. Seizures are divided in two main categories: Focal and generalized. Focal seizures get their name from the fact that they originate in a localized region of the brain. Generalized seizures can originate from either side of the brain. The incidence of seizures are reported to occur most often in the first decade of life. People who have only one seizure may not need therapy if the factors that caused the seizure are removed. People with more severe seizures may need to use more than one medication. Most anti-seizure medications help stop the frequency of seizures. Commonly used anti-seizure medications include phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital and leviterecetam. Phenytoin lowers the amount of sodium ions across cell membranes during impulses.

Q: A:

What is this ringing in my ears?

The most common cause of ringing or noises in the ears, otherwise known as tinnitus, is due to damage to the cochlea. It is estimated Terry Snook that nearly 50,000,000 American adults AuD, FAAA have tinnitus. The cochlea is the organ of hearing and within the cochlea are tiny hair like cells that transmit sound to the brain. When these hair cells are damaged the result is often ringing in the ears. The FDA approved treatment for tinnitus is to restore the missing sounds by using hearing aids to provide the brain with the auditory stimulation it is missing. Many studies show that patients notice a significant reduction in their tinnitus by wearing advanced hearing aid technology programmed for their hearing loss.

Q: A:

Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible?

An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance carrier. Chuck Charlton It basically says that if you have a collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. An appearance allowance (credit towards your deductible usually for minor cosmetic repairs not completed) is one way but must be consulted with your insurance company. Be wary of the repair shop that offers to save you your deductible. Are they completing all repairs or is your safety being jeopardized with an inadequate repair?

Q: A:

We typically set goals for health and fitness, investing, saving for retirement, career advancements, and our children’s education. Most of us set goals and make plans for travel and vacations. (2020 excepted.) Margie Connolly, Attorney But studies show that fewer than half of us set goals for our potential legal issues, such as estate planning or preparing for disability due to accident or injury, or guardianship for our children if something should happen to us. As a probate attorney, I have seen families struggle emotionally and financially when one of their members passes away or suffers a debilitating illness or tragic accident. The emotional struggle can be devastating, but the financial and legal struggles do not need to be. Proper planning can make difficult times somewhat easier for our families when legal documents such as wills, powers of attorney, guardianship designations, and in some cases, trusts, are in place. Attorneys cannot ease the emotional pain of loss or illness, but can ease the stress and financial burden families face, by helping create estate planning documents that address their specific needs. Reach out to your trusted legal professional to learn more.

A Message from Superintendent Dr. Robert Bostic |During this virtual year, it was a challenge to not have all of our Senior Spartans on campus. The chaos of the pandemic continues to linger around us, but remember not to allow the chaos to get inside of you — this is an important lesson of life. I know you’ll continue to think independently, to climb mountains, and to always remember what you learned at Stafford High School. You are Spartans forever and your greatness cannot be contained!

The mission of SMSD is to prepare each student to become college and career ready without remediation. www.staffordmsd.org | 281.261.9200 10

Stafford Class of 2021 rewriting story of their senior year By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com One word sprang easily to Principal Raymond Root’s mind when talking about the Stafford High School Class of 2021. “They’re incredibly resilient,” he said. As this year’s graduating class walks across the stage, they are leaving behind one of the more unique school years in recent memory. But while COVID-19 was a small chapter, Root said the seniors from this year have blown past it and written their own story to be remembered by. “They’re thriving. We’ve got kids going to Ivy League schools and some of the best schools across the nation,” he said. “Nothing has slowed (this class) down from achieving their goals, doing the things they want to do, and being prepared as they leave high school.”

A group of 21 seniors competed at state level competitions in SkillsUSA, 5 of those Seniors placed first and second, and then 3 are also advancing to the national competition this June. There are 71 Seniors called “Hometown Heroes”, who have been Spartans since their Kindergarten year in 2008, and will wear a special medal at the graduation ceremony. Deborah Nordt, Stafford’s Director of College & Career Center, said 18 Seniors have received Associates Degrees and Level 1 Certification in Film/Video Specialization from Houston Community College before they’ve even had a chance to walk the stage at their high school graduation. SMSD is the first district in the area to have students achieve the milestone and tripled last year’s mark. “It takes a village to get students on their way, and the Class of 2021 Seniors are extraordinary across the board,” Nordt said. Many of the senior class’s more than 250 graduates

have grown alongside Root, who is a 1998 graduate of Stafford and in his third year as Stafford High School’s principal. And he said he could not be prouder of the character of this year’s class as they come upon the end of their high school careers. “I came to these students when they were sophomores, so I’ve had the opportunity to see them grow and get to know some of them pretty well,” he said. “I’ve seen them grow from 15 and 16-year old kids into practically being adults. That’s incredible, and that’s why I became an administrator.” Whether it’s heading the traditional college route, learning a trade to become part of the workforce, or something else, one thing is for certain – Stafford High School’s Class of 2021 is writing their own story, and will not be denied. “This class is special,” Root said. “They’re ready to do that.”

Student Spotlight: Valedictorian Student spotlight: Leonardo Hernandez Tienda Salutatorian Sally Huang Tienda, who is fluent in both English and Spanish, shined in the classroom during his time at Stafford, Tienda finishing as the valedictorian with a 4.49 GPA in four years. During AP tests his junior year, he achieved a 5 out of 5 on the English Language and Composition exam, and a 4 out of 5 on the U.S. History exam. He plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin, where he will be majoring in Radio-Film-Television and Plan II Honors. He has been accepted into the Moody College of Communication Honors Program and the Plan II Honors Program, and plans to pursue working as a director. He was a member of the film crew at Stafford, working as a camera man for various athletic events. During his time at Stafford, Tienda was also part of several organizations, on the academic, athletic, and social fronts. As part of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), he would go around the cafeteria with a Chick-fil-a sign to get customers for the Spartan Express as well as participating in – and winning – both district and state competitions to help

develop skills in marketing and oneon-one business proposals. He was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Vice President of both the Science National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, helping teachers with work around the classroom and coordinating events and meetings. Tienda was also on the school’s robotics team his freshman and sophomore years, and helped the team qualify for the 2018 World Robotics Championships in Houston. On the athletics front, he was a member of Stafford’s varsity tennis team for the last three years. During his senior season, he was a member of the Spartans’ boys’ doubles team that won the District 25-4A championship and helped Stafford win the boys team district title. He was also previously the team tennis MVP during his sophomore season in 2018. Tienda has also given back to his community during his high school career. He has participated in multiple food drives with Missouri City-based Second Mile Mission Center as well as helped organize and clean the Pennywise thrift store. Tienda also volunteered at various karate and swim meets, and spent 16 hours helping Stafford Elementary School teachers with any work needed in the classroom.

Huang finished second in the 2021 graduating class of 250 students, compiling a Huang 4.46 GPA out of 5. She plans to attend the University of Houston and their Bauer Business College to major in accounting, and may also pursue a field related to international business. Additionally, Huang was named an AP Scholar with Honors as a result of SAT prowess her junior year, awarded to students who average at least a 3.25 on AP exams and score 3 or more on at least four of their exams. During her time at Stafford, Huang has been a member of multiple clubs and activities that have helped her develop a wide array of skills and talents that she will use beyond Stafford’s walls such as leadership, time management, ambition, perseverance and more. She was a member of the National Honor Society. She was also elected as president of the National Science Honor Society her senior year and served as vice president of the National Art Society during her senior year, and competed in regional

competitions with Stafford High’s robotics team starting in her sophomore year. During her time with the Taiwanese Youth Society, she volunteered around the school performing community services and hosted school events. FOCUS June is Effective Communications Month. And it’s a good idea to recognize the importance of good communications, because it plays a role in almost every aspect of living – including your finances. You’ll want to clearly communicate your financial goals to your loved ones – and you’ll want to hear theirs, too. Let’s look at some of the communications you might have with family members: • Your spouse – You and your spouse may have different thoughts about a range of financial topics – how much to save, how much to spend, the level of debt with which you’re comfortable and so on. Try to reach some type of consensus on these issues. However, in regard to investing, you don’t necessarily have to act in unison all the time. You each may have different investment styles – one of you may be more aggressive, willing to take on more risk in exchange for potentially higher returns, while the other would rather invest with an eye toward mitigating risk, even it means accepting a lower return. Of course, there’s nothing stopping each of you from pursuing your individual investment strategies in your own accounts – IRA, 401(k) and so on. Still, if you are going to work toward common goals – especially toward a shared vision of your retirement lifestyle – you each may want to compromise in your investment choices. And this accommodation is even more necessary in your

Discuss financial goals with your family joint accounts. • Your parents – If you may someday be involved with your parents’ financial plans – which is highly likely – you should know in advance what to expect. This may not be the easiest conversation to have, but it’s an important one. So, for example, ask your parents if they have a durable power of attorney, which allows them to designate someone to manage their financial affairs if they become physically or mentally incapacitated. You might also inquire if they have protected themselves against the potentially enormous costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. If not, you might suggest that they contact a financial advisor, who can offer solutions. Once you begin communicating about these issues, you may well want to go further into your parents’ estate plans to determine what other arrangements, if any, they have made. If it seems that their plans are not fully

developed, you may want to encourage them to contact an attorney specializing in estate planning. • Your grown children – Just as you talk to your parents about their estate plans, you’ll want to discuss the same topic with your own grown children. Let them know who you have named as a durable power of attorney, what’s in your last will and testament and whether you’ve established a living trust. If you’re already working with a financial advisor and an estate planning professional, make sure your children know how to contact these individuals. Of course, you don’t have to confine your communications to estate plans – if you want to help your children financially, such as loaning them money for a down payment on a home, let them know. By talking with your loved ones about key financial matters, everyone benefits. So, keep those lines of communication open.
