An Amish Christmas Marcus Yoder

O

ne of the highlights of the Christmas Season for any Amish child is the school Christmas Program. In many schools, the Thanksgiving Singing at school is when the pupils and teachers exchange names for the gift exchange. Pupils think about what gifts they hope to give, memorize their poems for recital and their parts in the plays. The start of program practicing is exciting for the pupils, “Props” for the play are brought along to school with much secrecy and giggles: “Mom wondered why we need a rocking chair for school!” The store-room and basement take on the appearance of a thrift-shop. The last few days before the program, the energy level is high and there is a lot of cleaning going on. Typically, the blackboards are decorated with colored chalk pictures drawn on by the pupils and depending on the teacher’s artistic ability, colorful Christmas art and embellishments adorn the walls.

The day of the program, school dismisses early. The younger pupils go home while the teacher and older pupils make the final preparations. Desks are carried to the basement and the schoolhouse is filled with the backless wooden benches used for church services. With everything finally ready, the teacher and pupils head home to eat and dress for the special occasion. The evening of the program, the neighborhood begins arriving at the schoolhouse. Among the crowd www.travelhost.com

there may be grandparents, married siblings from other neighborhoods, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends of all ages. There is an air of anticipation… The pupils, place their gifts in the classroom and huddle together while the audience is seated. Once the crowd is seated all but one or two of the gaslights are turned off. Typically, one or two lights are left on, with tinfoil around the light-globe making a reflector to create a “spotlight” on the stage. The children sing Christmas Carols, recite their poems, perform their plays and activities. There may be a few tears wiped away at the more sentimental or touching pieces counterbalanced by laughter at the more comical parts. Santa Claus, reindeer, Christmas trees, and Frosty the snowman are conspicuously absent, with the emphasis being on Christ’s birth and the joy of gathering with loved ones. From a teacher’s perspective, there is no other time the teacher and pupils feel so close or connected and it can be quite the event for the teacher to watch his or her pupils presenting the program everyone worked so hard to prepare. As the program draws to its conclusion, a wave of applause resounds in the schoolhouse followed by happy smiles and sighs of relief from the “actors.” Now comes the gift exchange

– all the weeks of secrecy and angling for clues, the buying, hiding, and wrapping of gifts are about to come to an end. The excited unwrapping results in a shower of wrapping paper and sparkling eyes and happy gasps as the pupils discover what was inside. Once the initial excitement is over, the children take turns to hold up their gifts and show the audience what was received and to thank the giver. Before the children are dismissed to dash about with their treasures, the teacher opens the gift or gifts given by the whole school. (At most programs, snacks and beverages are offered and people visit with one another for a while before collecting their children and gifts and bundling up for the chilly trip towards home). If you wish to learn more about the Amish, or their place in history, plan a visit the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center. The Center offers guided tours of “Behalt” - a 10 ft. x 265 ft. cyclorama oil-on-canvas painting that illustrates the heritage of the Amish and Mennonite people from their Anabaptist beginnings in Zurich, Switzerland, to the present day. Behalt means “to keep” or “remember.” The Center is open Mon-Sat 9:005:00 and is located near Berlin, OH at 5798 County Road 77, Millersburg, OH 44654. Please call (330) 893-3192 for more information or to schedule a group tour. NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023 5

Empowering Farmers and Artisans to earn fair wages and improve their lives

he campus name has changed from Olde Berlin Village Shoppes to Sheiyah Market. A name relevant to local culture as Sheiyah is the Amish word for barn, pronounced Shyyah. It’s a fun word to say and literally rolls off your tongue. Considering the first store was opened in a barn, it is a match made in Holmes County. The stores have not changed. They still have all your favorite products. You will find they have expanded their outdoor spaces, including a spacious courtyard to unwind from the ever-changing world. It’s a great place to park, explore and you’re welcome to stroll their campus. Here where it all started at the Village Gift Barn, you will find a fashion boutique with distinctive jewelry, a wide selection of home décor, transitional furnishings, a children’s dept with a toy section, and a tantalizing kitchen area. Three floors to explore and an elevator for added convenience. At Country Gatherings you will walk into a world of inspiration. From modern farmhouse to vintage or primitive they have what you need….the rugs, the accessories, the furnishings, wall décor and even window coverings. As one customer asked upon entering, “Did I just die and go to heaven?” Once inside, follow the aroma to your perfect cup of brew at The Buggy Brew Coffee Co. Do you have a green thumb or want to bring the outdoors in? Do not miss The Gardens! Their team will help you find the perfect plant or accessory to bring new life to your home, porch or planting area. They have a unique selection of houseplants and pots. And if you’re looking for a one of a kind fountain, this is the first stop for you. Whichever store YOU enter, they believe your home and style is a reflection of YOU and their goal is to help YOU shine at Sheiyah Market.

Sometimes great long term candy and chocolate operators begin in the basement or kitchen of their home. Would you believe approximately 75% do? Back in the depression days, Norman Eiler bought a concession stand back in 1936. These were the kind of stands that had ice cream, sodas, milk shakes and just a little candy, the kind of shop that was all about family values. In 1942 Eilers moved to their current location today. And to this day it remains a true old fashioned store. They don't have a website with its rich history and also doesn't have an on line shop where you could indulge in their offerings. So the next time you are in Dover Ohio located in Tuscarawas County, be sure you stop by and visit this true gem.

Reclaim…Reuse…Recreate: The Oak Barrel Company

O

wner/Artist/Craftsman Chris Deffenbaugh was helping a friend dispose of an old bourbon barrel when he found he had a vision of reusing the old Kentucky bourbon barrels: a view of their component parts and how they might be repurposed as art and furniture. Just as the barrel staves came from old oak trees that took root long ago, so too would the wooden staves serve as the roots of The Oak Barrel Company. It didn’t take long for Chris to finetune and focus his art into a business. Over 200 products later, The Oak Barrel Company has developed a growing fan and customer base. With both a brick and mortar location in Berlin, Ohio and their online website, they sell hundreds of items yearly. The great quality of the products brings

customers back again and again. Chris believes his customers are also drawn by the same curves and shapes of the barrel parts as he first was when he diverted that old, broken up barrel from a trip to the landfill. It also speaks to the company’s mission: Reclaim… reuse…recreate.

Imagine you have throbbing lower back pain,

all through the day, and all through the night. It hurts to sit down for work. Pain shoots through your back when you walk, and it’s hard to find a comfortable position in your bed at night to sleep. According to the American Chiropractic Association, this scenario is all too common: over half of working Americans reported having back pain last year, and it’s one of the more common reasons people aren’t able to work. Most of us will experience back pain at some point in time in our lives, and it can affect us at any age from childhood to late adulthood. If you are having back or neck pain and live in Holmes County or the surrounding area, stop by the Relax The Back store located within Stone Barn Furnishings in Mt. Hope to find a solution that is right for you. All staff members undergo extensive training, which includes understanding the most common back and neck issues that people suffer from, and they have wonderful solutions to help you at home! An amazing service in your backyard that is offered at Relax The Back is getting properly fitted for a pillow. Did you know that a perfect night’s sleep begins with the pillow! The perfectly fitted pillow is important to alleviate neck pain, allowing you to ease the strain on the neck and back as you lay your head down. Relax The Back also provides other sleep products including memory foam beds, Tempur-Pedic mattresses, adjustable bases, bed wedges, bed linens, and additional accessories that provide proper back support for sleeping.

You will be asked several questions to better understand your personal history of pain, strain and discomfort. Questions include: How’s your back today? When do you notice it bothering you most? Where does it hurt? What tasks are the most troublesome? Have you been diagnosed with back pain or experienced an accident? Has your doctor recommended any specific products? Relax The Back staff will also work alongside your doctor and/ or chiropractor to help get a fuller understanding of how they can help you at home. After taking time to find out what issues you are dealing with, a staff member will work to find products that will be most effective in relieving the pain or discomfort you are dealing with. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and try out various products. Most of the Relax The Back products are on display or in stock; having the option to test products before you buy them is a real plus in today’s market.

Established by an osteopath for his patients in 1984, Relax The Back was a small Austin, Texas, store that carried about 40 items designed to correct back problems. The specialty shop was purchased in 1988 by entrepreneur Virginia Rogers, a life-long pain sufferer. The company began franchising in 1989 with the support of the medical community behind it. It is this relationship with the medical community that put Relax The Back in a unique position - that of specialty health care retailer. Relax The Back’s goal is to relieve pain, support health, and foster well-being by transforming your routine, your space, and your life. Relax The Back has products that promote a holistic approach to a healthier lifestyle with over 35 years of proven expertise and a curated assortment of premium solutions that touch each aspect of your daily life – at home, at work, at rest. A Grateful Moment in a Day of Thanksgiving Marcus Yoder

H

olidays are special, whether one is Amish or English. In the Amish world, of special importance are the holidays that focus on family and faith. Christmas is celebrated because of the birth of Christ. Good Friday and other traditional Christian holidays are also special. Since we are in the fall season we will take a closer look at Thanksgiving and how the Amish world expresses itself on this uniquely American holiday. My earliest memories as a little Amish boy were of the smells that extended from the kitchen of our home as my mother prepared for the holiday. Often, we were headed to an extended family gathering and she would prepare a dish, or several to take along. The sight of the pumpkin pies, or the mashed potatoes were nearly more than one could bear without sneaking a bite or two, or more! She would shoo us out of the kitchen and tell us that we had to wait for the meal and the day that was coming. As we gathered at Grandpa and Grandma’s house with the cousins and uncles and aunts, of whom I had many, the food would be finished and served. Turkey and ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a vegetable, and always noodles. Then on to the table laden with desserts. Ahh the pies, and the cakes, pudding, and much more. We would visit and play until someone called us together for lunch. Grandpa, with his shining, bald head would say in Dutch, “if we are all here, lets bow our heads in prayer.” And for a moment silence would reign. In that moment, in our hearts, whether we could articulate it or not, gratefulness assailed our senses. Then we would eat. Since there were twelve children and about thirty grandchildren we would file through the line. In the traditional Amish way, the eldest male would go first, and we would continue to file through by age. In this way age and wisdom were honored and we all learned deferred enjoyment as we waited our turn. But then load our 32 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2023

plates we did! The creamy potatoes covered with rich gravy, the succulent turkey, and the rich desserts made the wait worthwhile. Then after the meal we would play until chore time, then the cows were milked, horses fed, and of we went to the house for another round at the same food again. As we traveled home in the dark, starlit November evening a feeling of contentment was marrow deep in the little boy, now sleepy in the back of the buggy. This small window into my own memory of Thanksgiving pasts, reflects the importance of three things in the Amish world; faith, family, and the farm. In that gathering were elements of faith as we bowed our heads in silent prayer and gratefulness for the meal, both before we ate and after we ate. In that moment we followed hundreds of years of tradition as we followed the path of faith in expressing gratefulness to God for not only the food, but also the heritage of faith that God has called our people to. In addition to faith, is the importance of family in our world. The Amish world always involves family and we make decisions based on how it will affect our family life. When we gathered around the table in the old farmhouse that my Grandparents lived in, we were celebrating family. People in this community often ask who your parents are, and

make familial connections that extend back three generations. Nearly everyone is connected to many others in the community. This is important, and in essence has kept our community connected in a world that is often global and disconnected. The third factor is our deep appreciation for the farms, lands, and soil of our world. Thanksgiving celebrated the glories of harvest and the rich bounty of the soil. Meat from the larder and vegetables from the garden were harvested, stored, and would keep the family fed over the winter. For that reason, every Thanksgiving since we have gathered, now with my own family, to celebrate the gifts of faith, family and the richness of the farm with those we love. Happy Thanksgiving! Behalt means “to keep” or “remember.” The Center is open Mon-Sat 9:00-5:00 and is located near Berlin, OH at 5798 County Road 77, Millersburg, OH 44654. The Warehouse Restaurant Celebrating 15th Anniversary

J

ohn Larson purchased the Warehouse Restaurant that has been part of Coshocton’s Roscoe Village back in the 1970’s sometime in 2009 after spending 26 years in the education field. A friend who owned a restaurant in Zanesville was his business partner for the first year. They looked at places in Marietta, Licking County and Muskingum County and then came to Roscoe where he fell in love the area and the building. Since then he has doubled the outside dining area where people can have fun listening to local music or have wedding receptions out there. Live music is periodically featured in the lower level of the Warehouse restaurant and they have a comedy club nights upstairs. John, started the comedy club 14 years ago. Two of the comedians have done HBO. Its adult

comedy though. People start coming around 6:30 p.m, eat and drink upstairs where the show starts about 8:15 p.m and goes until 10 p.m. The next comedy club is Saturday Jan 13 and tickets are only $18. John is grateful to the community for their support and for allowing him to be in Roscoe Village for over 15 years. One of the menu items that the Warehouse is known for is its Legendary Steak n Stein Onion rings. John merged the menu and service approach from his father and uncle’s Zanesville Steak n Stein. The Legendary Steak n Stein onion rings are the same ones that his father and uncle served back in 1952. In 2018 the warehouse restaurant was voted the number one burger place, steak place and American restaurant in Coshocton. Be sure when you visit to upgrade your sandwiches

and burgers to what the menu calls the “wow-way”. Most recently they were featured in Ohio Magazine’s top 30 places to stop in State of Ohio. Their customers love their appetizers and other entrees as well. The Dresden location will be celebrating 7 years very soon. Its about 90 percent of the same menu with about 10 percent difference due to clientele and demographics. Future plans include continuing to offer a high quality level of food and service at both restaurants, expand the use of the food trailer to other areas and expand the Warehouse’s catering business. John Larson will be the first to say he is thrilled and blessed that after 15 years the restaurant is still going strong. And that without the community and great staff it would have been impossible to do.

What’s New at the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum?

N

eeding a place to safely store and restore his fleet of railroad old-timers, museum founder Jerry Jacobson acquired 34 acres of farm land located alongside a road named Smokey Lane. Visitors to the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum experience an immersive trip back into the heyday era of steam locomotives and travel. Public Tours are offered seasonally April - November with guided tours running at 10:00am, 12:00pm, and 2:00pm, Thursday – Saturday. Aside from the regularly scheduled public tours, there are many special events that guests can attend throughout the year that provide new and exciting experiences. For veterans and military enthusiasts, the museum holds a celebration every year during the second weekend of September that

they call “Steam to Victory”. This event is a celebration of the impact North America’s railroads made on the allied victory in Europe, as well as an event to honor veterans and currently active military members. For Steam to Victory, the museum hosts many military vehicles and reenactment groups that play out mock battles on the facility’s grounds as well as many demonstrations of small arms and other weaponry of the era. Train rides and roundhouse tours are also offered during the event at no extra charge. In October, guests can look forward to taking part in the museum’s “Evening Lantern Tours”, nighttime tours where the guides share spooky stories of railroading and railroad folklore with the guests. These tours run at 6pm and 7pm on Friday and Saturday, during the last two

weekends of October. Kids can look forward to December as jolly ole’ St. Nicholas will be present for the climax of Age of Steam’s operating season for “Santa Visits the Roundhouse”, a fun event where guests will be transported to the roundhouse by train to see Santa, take part in a fun craft, eat cookies and hot chocolate, and each child receives a special gift bag as they exit the roundhouse. Santa will be coming to visit on December 9th from 9am to 1pm.

DISCOVER THE GLORY DAYS OF RAILROADING! Join us on a guided tour of the world’s largest, privately owned, collection of steam locomotives.

Open April-November with guided tours running at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm, Thu-Sat. See website for pricing and more information.
