Hopefully, the shrill screams from squadrons of swifts fearlessly flying at incredible speeds over our rooftops will not become a sound of the past! The ‘natural’ nesting sites for swifts are coastal cliffs and mountains, but in the gentle county of Suffolk these habitats are rare. A few nest in holes in trees and red crag cliffs, but the majority have, since Roman times, successfully improvised with nest sites in stone and Photo: Andrew Easton brick buildings, nesting in eaves and gables, holes in walls and under the irregular Suffolk pantiles. Unfortunately, since the introduction of new building regulations, buildings have had to be constructed and renovated in such a way that the entrances to
