Trent is now spending a year at the home of Julie Bishop (pictured) for basic training, after which he will move to the main office of Canine Partners for more intense instruction. Towards the end of the second year, an appropriate life partner will be identified, and spend time with Trent and his trainers, before they both leave together. At that stage there should be a passing out ceremony, to which the golf club is expected to be invited. In the next few months it it hoped Julie and Trent will be visiting the golf club.

FAMILY OF WINNERS!

With several key players missing through various commitments, the Woodbridge Golf Club Men’s Championship left an opportunity for a new name to be engraved on the trophy. With the course in superb condition and the weather set fair, the favourite on paper, John Blome, set the early pace with a two over par 72 in the morning. Garry Robinson and Phil Ashenden were just a stroke behind. Current Suffolk Seniors Champion, Mark Jackson and Graham Tait shared fourth with 75’s whilst the trio of Dave Peters, Dominic Rosser and Ricky Dzierozynski were a further shot back. With 27 holes played it was Ashenden who held the lead at four over par for the day, with Tait a shot behind just ahead of Blome. The other contenders had fallen away and whilst Tait completed the tougher back nine in two over par, both Ashenden and Blome President, Roger recorded several dropped shots over the easier front nine to leave Tait the winner on 147. Ashenden was runner-up with 148 and Blome just a further shot back after Burgess (let) with 2015 Men’s Club Champion, a 77. Tait, whose son Gregor is the County Junior Champion, also won the Graham Tait Marks trophy for the best nett score of the day (137). John Bates finished runner-up with rounds of 70+69, with Immediate Past Captain, Cliff Longman third on 142.

Barry Stableford Report

Harry Fricker proved just why he got a call up to the England Golf Regional Trials, by continuing his great run of form with an impressive score of 38 points. After paring every hole on the front 9, he was set for a decent score, which he continued on the back 9, after putting together two birdies and two bogey’s to finish level par of the course. Following up closely in second place was his playing partner Max McGreal who came in with a score of 37 points, after struggling to get off to a good start. In third place and making up the top three was George Fricker, who scored 33 points, but was left disappointed after three double bogey’s hindered his chances of winning the trophy. Results: H Fricker 38pts, M McGreal 37, G Fricker 33, L Cleland 32, W Smith 31, A Tripp 29, C Haste 24, A Wright 24, J Goulton 22.

Phil Platten

Welcome from the President of the Suffolk Golf Union

I just cannot believe September is upon us already and the golfing season is fast approaching its conclusions. These past few weeks have been very busy with the club match-play finals being played out. This year has seen a wide selection of clubs competing in the finals and in some cases overshadowing the more usual winners of these competitions. Pride of place may go to Brett Vale, who narrowly beat Rookery Park in the Tolly Cobbold Cup and in doing so, winning only their second SGU County title. Newton Green having won the Hambro Cup in 2014 by defeating Ipswich in that final, met them again in this years’ semi-final, before going on to narrowly hold onto their title against Haverhill in a most exciting final at Bury St Edmunds. In the Parks Trophy, Woodbridge beat Rookery Park by two holes with the title being decided in the last match on the final hole. This made it exciting but nail biting for the many supporters watching the match. The Beaumont Trophy was played on a glorious sunny day at Ufford Park, where Bury St Edmunds defeated Felixstowe Ferry. The final club competition, the prestigious Stenson Shield was played out at the Diss Golf Club between Felixstowe Ferry and Ipswich. Playing on greens of outstanding quality, both teams played some tremendous golf that kept the title in the balance until very late in the day. Felixstowe Ferry became the eventual winners by a very narrow margin of 7 to 5. Played in the most excellent spirit, the golf was a pleasure to watch with both teams producing the quality of golf one would expect for such an occasion. My congratulations go to the finalist for making it an exciting finale to the season. I would also like to record my appreciation to all the clubs who kindly gave up their courses to host the semifinals and finals. Finally, some of the most pleasing times for me is observing the development of junior golf in the county under the unstinting guidance of Mike Stevenson. The Junior Management team’s long hours and hard work came to fruition this year winning several titles in the various age groups but, no more so than with the Suffolk Under 18 team’s success in winning the England Golf South East Group U18’ League. Managed by Trevor Mason, to beat so many strong counties to this inaugural title was nothing short of outstanding. These young players have given a massive boast for the future of Suffolk golf and I look forward to seeing their golfing careers progress over the coming years.

HAMBRO CUP by Tony Garnett

Newton Green retained the Hambro Cup with a six-hole victory over Haverhill in a final at Bury St Edmunds that hung in the balance until the closing holes. The holders were five up at lunch. They needed that cushion as Haverhill fought back in the afternoon. After 15 holes the teams were neck and neck. The everdependable Simon Bearman and Mike Polley were 13 up on the day against different opponents. Haverhill’s Dave Spittle and Jack Bligh were one down at lunch to Russell Oakey and Harvey Watts but were four

up in the afternoon. Yet the win by Watts and Oakey on the 16th, when they were giving a shot, came at a crucial time in the overall match. Connor Talbot played with his father Bob in the morning and they were three down. Lewis Woodhead took over from Bob in the afternoon. The new pairing took time to settle but they pulled back a five-hole deficit to lose by only two. Jed Seeley and Greg Hills were two up at lunch but they, too, found the going tougher in the afternoon against Haverhill team captain Chris Vince and Jack Warwick. Vince sunk a long birdie putt on the ninth but they won by one to be one down on the day. Hills, formerly of Stoke by Nayland, now has two Hambro Cup and two Stenson Shield pint mugs.

Patrick Spraggs has won the Michael Faraday Cup as Suffolk Open champion for the third time in his career. He had two rounds of one over par 71 to force a play-off with Robert Salter which he won at the fifth extra hole at Haverhill. Spraggs won in 2010 and 2011 as an amateur at Stowmarket. This latest success came as a trainee PGA professional attached to Woodbridge. Salter, who also had two rounds of 71, had the consolation of winning the Easterbrook Trophy as leading amateur. He also works in the pro shop at Woodbridge For a while there was nothing to separate them as they played the 17th and 18th holes until a winner could be found. Spraggs sunk a long putt on the first extra hole to save his par with Salter unable to produce what would have been a winning birdie from somewhat closer. The second was halved in par with Salter producing a tremendous recovery from the bank behind the green. The third extra hole was halved in par and the fourth with two birdies. It was all settled when Salter’s second shot ended in a watery hazard to the left of the green. He had to take a penalty drop. With Spraggs on the green in regulation it was as good as over. Spraggs can thank his putting for this success because he sunk a long one for birdie on the final hole of his second round. The best round of the day was two under par 68 from Chris Bartrum of Diss in the afternoon but it left him one short of a place in the play-off having a frustrating 75 in the morning. Danny Western, Suffolk’s amateur match play champion from Gorleston, was also one short with rounds of 72 and 71. The next three places were taken by county first team players, Ali Hall of Halesworth, James Biggs of

Josh Driver of Diss was on their tails with 72 but his challenge fell away in the afternoon. Suffolk Amateur champion Sam Byford (Ipswich), still only 16, had a round of 71 in the afternoon and was the best of Suffolk’s juniors. His overall score of 147 was matched by Haverhill’s Chris Vince and Hintlesham’s Sam Debenham. Guy Mummery of Rookery Park was still in with a chance at lunch after his round of 73 but his back gave him problems in the afternoon. Rookery’s other contender, Luke Thompson, had 73 in the morning but slipped to 77 in the afternoon. Jed Seeley of Newton Green, on his 18th birthday, was in a rush from the time he found that there was no way through Clare and had to take the long diversion. He made his tee-off time but there was no time for a proper warm-up.

The Haverhill course was in superb condition. Head greenkeeper Glen Norris had prepared fast and true greens which provided an interesting test. Spraggs and Salter sunk some pressure putts in the play-off. The only players to have three of more Suffolk Open wins are Laurie Ayton, a former Ryder Cup team member from Ipswich with six, Robin Mann with five and Stephen Whymark with four.

Bury St Edmunds win the Beaumont Cup

by Tony Garnett

The name of Bury St Edmunds will be engraved on the Beaumont Trophy for the first time after they beat Felixstowe Ferry by 15 holes in a final at Ufford Park. The more confident side on the day took the honours, a fact acknowledged by Ferry captain Chris Pearson at the presentation. The top two Bury pairs both won by six holes. The final two matches were in the balance in the final stages, but Bury won them both. A birdie for Viv Davies on the par three ninth was a highlight for Felixstowe. An accurate tee shot was followed by sinking a six-foot putt. Bury’s toughest match was a four-hole win at Gorleston in the first round in which Felixstowe had a bye. In the second round Bury won a home tie against Bungay and Waveney Valley by 10 holes while Felixstowe passed a stiff examination with a three-hole win at Newton Green. Can you play to a misplaced flagstick? by MICHAEL THOMAS

Q

This is a query which arose from a recent match. Decision 17/4 gives the answer:

A player playing from off the putting green and wishing to leave the flagstick in the hole may find that the flagstick is leaning towards his ball (a disadvantage) or away from his ball (an advantage). What are the player’s rights in this situation?

A

The flagstick may be left as it is or centred in the hole, as contemplated by the Definition of “Flagstick”. The flagstick may not be intentionally adjusted to a more favourable position than centred. To do so would infringe Rule 1-2 (Exerting Influence on Movement of Ball or Altering Physical Conditions). An opponent or fellow-competitor who centres the flagstick incurs no penalty, but the player may have it restored to its original position. WE LIVE AND LEARN!

Ufford Park Junior Championship Report

With the cloud set in for the day and a constant flurry of rain, it looked set to be a miserable day for the Ufford Park, 18 hole Junior Club Championships. There were a few times it looked set to be cancelled, due to the amount of rain, however, the greens held out and the tournament proceeded. Scoring conditions were extremely tough, with players struggling to get to grips with the saturated fairways and greens, as well as the continuous driving rain, which led to a couple of players withdrawing from the competition. Nevertheless, the rest of the field battled on to complete their rounds and finish with some fairly respectable scores. There were three players in contention until the 17th hole, where Luke Cleland scored a 9 on the tricky par 4. The other two players were within a shot of each other going down the last hole, but with Alex Tripp unable to get a good tee shot away and eventually getting down in 10, it left George Fricker with a foot putt on the 18th green to claim victory and get his name up on the board for the first time. Alongside the scratch prize was the Nett prize, which was won by Adam Wright with an impressive score of Nett 69, five shots clear of second place Kamiar Azvine, Nett 74. Results: A Wright 93-24-69, K Azvine 96-22-74, W Smith 92-16-76, M Davis 97-17-80, A Tripp 90-783, G Fricker 88-4-84, L Cleland 89-5-84, J Cook 106-13-93.

SUFFOLK BOYS WIN INAUGURAL ENGLAND GOLF SOUTH EAST UNDER 18 LEAGUE TROPHY by Trevor Mason

18

Suffolk will be the first name on the new England Golf South East Group Under 18 League trophy after the team beat Sussex and Hertfordshire in the final at The Dyke Golf Club, Brighton. The course is situated on the top of the South Downs with spectacular panoramic views over the south coast. It was fortunate that the matches were played in relatively calm conditions on a fine, warm day. Suffolk had overcome Norfolk and Bedfordshire in the Northern Section, Hertfordshire had won the Central Section and Sussex had won the Southern Section. All matches in the league have been 8 singles over 18 holes in a triangular format. Final scores: Suffolk 10.5, Hertfordshire 9, Sussex 4.5. Gregor Tait, the county Junior stroke play and matchplay champion, set the tone for the final by winning both his matches by 3 and 1, being 5 under par in doing so. In his final representative match before leaving for college in America the team captain, Jack Phillips, played solidly throughout and scored one and a half points for the team. Lewis Whiting was 4 down and 2 down midway through his matches and although losing 2 down to Under 16 international Charlie Strickland from Sussex he recovered well to score a half against Hertfordshire. Suffolk Amateur champion, Sam Byford, was never behind in two close games and he scored one and a half points. Four birdies at the start of his round gave Josh Driver a flying start and although he was pegged back during the round, he finished strongly to beat both of his opponents. Will Morcombe produced an amazing comeback in his matches. After 12 holes he was 4 down and 3 down but he then started to hole some crucial putts and recovered to win one match and half the other. Although 15 year old Jack Cuthbert had six birdies in his round he dropped shots on most of the other holes and lost both his games. He was, however, up against two older boys with lower handicaps. Harry Fricker, also aged 15 and representing the Under 18 team for the first time, was the last match left on the course and he scored the vital one and a half points to ensure that Suffolk got over the line for a memorable victory.

Team Manager, Trevor Mason, said "I am delighted with the team who were very much underdogs against two counties with twice as many clubs and players to chose from. The boys did Suffolk proud and received compliments on their play and the manner in which they conducted themselves. To be the first winners of a prestigious new competition is a fantastic achievement." With only Tait and Phillips from the team leaving the junior ranks next season; the Under 16 team winning the Skevington trophy and the Under 14 team winning the Keith Bass Trophy and beating Essex in the Anglian Shield, there is every reason to be optimistic about junior golf in Suffolk for the next few years.

Gregor Tait never under pressure in Suffolk Junior match play BY

Gregor Tait of Ipswich won the TONY Suffolk Junior Match play title at GARNETT Newton Green with a series of impressive victories. On the first day he swept aside the challenge of James Cooper and Connor Talbot. In the semi-final he beat Jack Phillips and went on to beat Suffolk Amateur champion Sam Byford in the final. At no stage over the two days was he subjected to any pressure. Byford was one up after four holes in the final. Tait then won seven of the next nine holes to score a 6 and 5 victory. In the first round Liam Hansey of Bungay gave the holder, Josh Driver of Diss, a close match. His chance ended with a plugged ball just off the fairway on the 17th. Ben Aves of Bury St Edmunds hit back from five down against Byford to lose 2 and 1. The all-Newton Green tie between Harvey Watts and Ben Uttridge was settled on the last green. The quarter-finals saw Phillips make light of the

Skevington Salver by Tony Garnett

Harry Fricker of Ufford Park had the biggest win of his career when he carried off the Skevington Salver at Purdis Heath. His score of 105 for the 27-hole competition was one better than Essex star Aaron Edwards-Hill from The Warren. It was a major scalp for the Suffolk player in this annual under-16 inter-county event involving eight players from Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk and Bedfordshire. Edwards-Hill was third in the England Schools’ Championship at Peterborough Milton in June beating both Gregor Tait and Jack Phillips. Harry Hodgson of Woodbridge was hit on the chest in the morning by a wayward golf ball which left a bruise. He was able to continue playing. The under-14 winner was, inevitably, Habebul who then faced an overnight trip to Preston to play in the Reid Trophy, the English Boys’ Under 14 Strokeplay. Some of the high-handicap youngsters, including a good turn out from the West Suffolk Golf Centre where PGA professional Ben Kerr is doing a great job, played only 18 holes. They are the ones for the future. One unfortunate lad learned a lesson about checking his scorecard and suffered disqualification. He won’t make that mistake again. Club Championship 2015

Seventy two players competed in the Felixstowe Ferry Club Championship John Cook Trophy. The weather over the weekend was very unseasonal and on the first day there was a very strong wind (even for Felixstowe Ferry!) and for the players who made the cut, the majority of the second day was played in persistent rain and wind. After the first round Bill MacLeod led the field with an excellent level par 72, one ahead of Ben Sayers, two ahead of Graham Wardley and four ahead of the 2013 champion, Paul Sayers. On the second day McLeod, Ben Sayers and Wardley, playing together, needed to birdie the final hole to match the score of 152 (76-76) posted in the Clubhouse by Ben’s father, Paul. None could achieve it, leaving Paul as Champion and his son in second place, Bill MacLeod finished third and Graham Wardley fourth. The Kersey Cup for the best nett score over 36 holes was won by 17 handicap, Will Jewkes, with a nett score of 139 (69-70). For the first time, the Seniors Championship was integrated into the competition with the first round score to count. Chris Veitch, who was the Club Champion in 1986, won on countback from John Mayhew with a score of 84.

Great to see Juniors be educated in play at the Stonham Competitions

The aim of the junior events at Stonham Barns in Suffolk is to give the youngsters a chance to compete in friendly junior golf tournaments and to experience how to score, play and manage their game around the course. Many of the juniors have not played in any kind of competition so this is good education for greater understanding of the game for their future. More details on www.stonhambarnsgolf.co.uk

SUFFOLK GOLF ALLIANCE (WINTER)

26

The Players may well be taking advantage of their Summer Break, but behind the scenes the Suffolk Alliance is preparing for the coming Winter season, which commences at Halesworth during the first week of October. Following the recent AGM at Bury St. Edmunds G.C., Stowmarket’s Bill Darling (right) was installed as President, and also joining the Committee will be Ipswich member Chris Clark. Last Winter’s trial inclusion of Amateur Ladies partaking in Alliance activities, proved a successful venture and a vote went unanimously in favour of consolidation of this move, so this season will see full membership alongside the men. Weather permitting there will be fourteen fixtures played over thirteen courses, the exception being the popular Southwold course which hosts two meetings ensuring all entrants will at least play this seaside nine once. Planned are four Pro.Ams. with the remaining events being 4BBB’s and once again Colin Aldous at Ufford Park will host the Christmas meeting. One target many will be aiming at will be that of Stow’s Keith Rooney, the current Merit League Champion, who doubtless will be attempting to achieve the rare feat of retaining the honour.

JUNIOR OPEN WINNERS

The Felixstowe Ferry Junior Open was held with an entry of 23 Juniors. It was great to welcome the Juniors on a fairly quiet sunny day and the Club were delighted to have included an extra two boys, who were on holiday in Felixstowe, but live in The Hague, Holland.

11 year old Alexandra Rock travelled over 1,000 miles from Czech Republic to Stonham Barns to play in a recent Stonham Junior Tournament. Alexandra, who plays her golf in Prague and has an 18 handicap, travelled with her parents and stayed in England for a weeks holiday. With a very good score of 36 in her first round at the 9 hole course at Stonham Barns, she managed 3 pars and a birdie on the 4th hole. In 2nd place was 11 year old Rio Everitt from Stowmarket Golf Club with a score of 38.

Ufford Park Captains Day 2015

The Day kicked off in fine weather, with a Texas Scramble format hosted by the 2015 club captains, Val Moon, Dave Ellis and Harry Fricker. The group comprising of Gill Till, Rob Keeble, Mervyn Ruffles and George Fricker were narrow winners with an impressive score of Nett 54. Following up closely in 2nd place were the group of Hilary Bidewell, Tim Moon, Richard Hayes and George Butters producing a solid score of Nett 56. Alongside the Texas Scramble competition, was a nearest the pin prizes. For the ladies, Wendy Hayes was closest with her attempt on the 3rd hole. For the men, Martin Percival was triumphant with his attempt on the 16th. One of the main talking points in the bar afterwards was the hole-in-one on the par 3, 10th hole by George Butters. It’s his second hole-in-one of his playing career and was definitely one to remember, pitching the ball about 18 inches to the left of the pin with his 9 iron and spinning it back into the hole!

Luckman and Whyman win Haskell for Ipswich

by

Quite a crowd gathered at Aldeburgh Golf Club to watch the final of the Haskell Trophy 2015. Sharon Luckman and Lottie Whyman made a fast start against the Felixstowe sisters, Jo Woodward and Amanda Norman who had held the trophy for the last two years. Ipswich raced to three up before Felixstowe pulled back two holes, turning just one down. After one or two flurries in the back nine, Ipswich lunched at two up. The Luckman/Whyman team looked a little lost on the greens when they returned to the course, allowing Felixstowe to grab the first two holes. Ipswich kept calm though and got their act together helped by Felixstowe’s visit to a bush off the tee at three. Here Jo played a superb shot from the rough and they did well to make five but could not match the Ipswich birdie. Par golf took Ipswich to 4

LETTER FROM SPAIN

Well, that is another busy August Holiday season out of the way. We can’t believe it has been our eleventh!

No more buggies racing around our urbanisation driven by eight year olds with as many as six on board. The ‘rules’ state that 14yr olds minimum may drive buggies and that younger children should be accompanied by adults. That a maximum of two adults plus two children ‘belted in’ at the back should be permitted on a buggy is the rule – the Spanish don’t care. No more buggies sitting outside our house, which is in a quiet spot, at night with ten or twelve adolescents laughing and shouting at three o’clock in the morning, so that I have to put on some trousers and go outside to tell them to move on. Gawd knows where the parents are they don’t care! No more phone calls from people wanting classes at seven in the evening. They seem surprised when I tell them that I do not teach ‘at night’!

Apart from this I have enjoyed working with many nice people [good players too]. Most are now well known to me coming, as they do, for a ‘refresh’ but many others have come on recommendation which is always good. * * * * * One half of Spain love dogs but it seems the other half can dump and abandon them without compunction or conscience.

Mrs B. has a great propensity for attracting such creatures to her and always has biscuits in her bag when she sees a stray. She even buys flea sprays and eye drops for those in need, carrying them with her everywhere!!

So it was as she was out in the campo with our dog Suffolk Ladies County Golf Association Current Officers:

on his morning outing; twelve kilometres running and sniffing as dogs do.

She came upon an elderly gentleman who was trying to lift the fence to allow the smallest of puppies to pass underneath – but couldn’t. Mrs B, with the strength and determination of a lioness, raised it. The little mite, no more than six weeks old as we learnt later, was free but terrified so Mrs B took it home in the basket on her bike.

When I got home I wasn’t really surprised to see our new visitor sitting on her lap! Absolutely covered in fleas she really was the smallest thing I had ever seen. With a Prince Charles face and a body no more than six inches long, with the shortest of legs, it was amazing that the pup had survived at all. We decided to call it, if it was a boy, Mulligan; 2nd chance – but it was a girl so we called it Mullie!

A walk around our house would have been to her a marathon but she made it well. A couple of days later all the fleas had gone. She was eating well and enjoying her new situation.

But what to do with her? Neither of us really wanted another dog so we took her to the Vet who put us in touch with some young people who take in pups, put their photos on Facebook, to find new owners for them. This we did.

After five days I arrive home, as is my wont, at about 1pm and Mrs B. is in tears! She is crying because Mullie has gone to a new home. She is crying because she has gone. She is crying because she is happy that Mullie now has a better future. It is Okay to cry at times, don’t you think?

Every day I arrive home not knowing what to expect next, but knowing also that we’ll do whatever it takes to rescue these poor, abandoned, creatures.

On one hand ‘shame on you’ Spain. On the other hand ‘thank you’ to the nice people. Enjoy!

SUCCESS FOR ALICE at HAVERHILL

The Ladies Club Championship, sponsored by HGC Head Professional Paul Wilby, the Pam Ratford Trophy was contested recently. In all 7 ladies and 2 junior girls took part in the 36 hole medal Club Championship and 12 ladies took part in the 18 hole Pam Ratford Trophy, also medal format. After the morning round the two junior girls were leading the field. Defending her title, Alice Iron established a comfortable lead by 4 shots over her nearest rival, Fiona Stokes (who has just won a major competition at Haverhill - The Lady Captain’s Cup!) In the handicap competition Linda Alexander carded a nett 70, with Alice Iron and Mary Sail both in close pursuit with nett 71. In the afternoon Alice produced a fabulous round of golf, giving a combined total of 83+79=162. She secured victory in convincing style to retain the Ladies Club Championship for 2015, and reduced her handicap by a shot to 11 in the process. In 2nd place was Linda Alexander with two consistent rounds of golf, 90+89=179, just edging out 3rd place Fiona Stokes on count back with 87+92=179. In 4th place was Mary Sail with 90+98=188. Linda Alexander was awarded the Handicap Trophy following her rounds of 70+69=139 and her handicap was cut to 19. Although Alice Iron had a nett total of 138, under the rules of the championship competition she was not eligible to win both prizes, having already won the scratch event. Gerry Wheatley finished in 2nd place with 75+74=149 and Mary Sail finished in 3rd place with 71+79=150. Lady Captain Sheila Price gave the prize presentation for the Club Championship and congratulated everyone who took part. Sheila went onto announce the result of the Pam Ratford Trophy and commented “it is encouraging to see three Parklands Members who joined as 7 day members back in April, taking part in the Pam Ratford Trophy and doing so well”. One of the former Parklands Members, Anne Reed, claimed the victory with a superb nett 68, four shots ahead of 2nd place Elaine Ward, also a former

Parklands Member, with a nett 72. In 3rd place was Pat Kennedy with a nett 79 on count back. As a result of Anne's win, her handicap was reduced under the exceptional score reduction by 5 shots to 25.

Alice Iron, Ladies Club Champion Alice has just received a string of As and A*s in her GCSE’s and Haverhill Golf Club are all very proud of her success both on and off the golf course. This wonderful news may help inspire other young girls to take up golf, as Alice has managed to combine her studies with her golf, and achieve great success in both! Well done Alice!

The new, Norfolk County Golf Union Handicap League for 2015, has gone from strength to strength

The final match of the league series was between Royal Norwich and Sprowston Manor. What happened was an historic moment for two players. Playing the par three 9th at Royal Norwich, Sprowston Manor player Aaron Saddleton had a hole in one and not surprisingly there was much celebration! One would guess an expectation that the hole would be won, however, not phased by this, Royal Norwich player Mark Avis teed his ball and followed him in for his own hole in one. The odds of this happening are too much for contemplation. Nonetheless, congratulations to both on a remarkable achievement. Initially the clubs were sorted into four mini-leagues (brackets) playing home and away with the leading points scorers of each going forward to a semi-final. We have now reached the semi final stage and everyone has reported on just how enjoyable the whole experience was. In a variation to the earlier league matches the four semi-finalists will go into a draw to establish who plays who for a route to the final. The semi final and final will both be played on the same day at the same venue, this year Weston Park GC. The two semi-finals will be played over 18 holes with the winners of each going on to the final again over 18 holes in the afternoon. The four semi-finalists are: Thetford, Royal Norwich, King's Lynn and Costessey Park.

Eaton juniors Ruanaq Rai, Finlay Heywood and Matt Campbell, seen here at Frilford Heath, representing Norfolk in the England Golf Junior Champion Club Tournament. A 36 hole event held over two days. Each county sends a qualifying team of three with two scores to count. Norfolk finished mid table. The young players were a credit to their County and their Club.

Roger Trower Armada Dish

The NCGU Centenary Competition, for the Roger Trower Armada Dish, was held at Mundesley GC. This is a team event for clubs. Established in memory of Roger Trower, long time secretary of the County Union. Teams of four play in separate pairs with each pair returning their better-ball stableford points total. The scores of both pairs are combined to provide a team score for the competition.

To say that it was a day of two halves, is a complete understatement. The morning starters enjoyed a force 5 wind, blowing northerly with intermittent rain showers and a temperature around 10 centigrade, excluding the wind chill. The afternoon starters were treated more favourably when the sun came out, the wind decreased to flat calm and the temperature rose to around 17 Centigrade, which reflected significantly in the scoring. Eventually Dunston Hall GC and Dereham GC came in with 80 points each,

with Dunston Hall winning on countback on the last 9 holes. The Dunston Hall Team consisted of Andy Horne & Thomas Payne (41 Points) and Terry Radcliffe & Scott Sealey (39 Points). All competing players were very complementary concerning the course and the set up, which only added to an enjoyable day. The competition was followed by a super post match meal with County Vice-President Graham Turner and Club Captain David Craske presenting the winners with their trophy and an individual memento of the day.

Great golf, great course, great day!

The 2015 Norfolk Open & Professional Championships was hosted by Royal Norwich Golf Club The Joint Professional Champion of 2014, Tom Clements of Eaton, was not in the mood to relinquish his title and he demonstrated how intent he was with an 8 under par opening round of 64. Not a blemish to be seen on his card just birdie after birdie. He followed this with a solid 1 under par 71 in the afternoon resulting in a 9 under par total of 135 and assuring him of the 2015 Norfolk Professional Championship and the Norfolk Open Championship. Tom's smile matched the weather of the day - ear to ear sunshine. Chasing all the way was last year's joint champion, Ian Ellis of Gt Yarmouth & Caister, and tour star Will Harold of Sheringham, but with both finishing on a total of 140 they had to settle on joint second spot. New professional Nic Cains came in fourth with an impressive total of level par 144, followed closely by Mike Jubb of Sheringham with a 145. Completing the podium line-up on joint 6th were two young golfers, new to the professional ranks, George Morris of Sprowston manor and Charlie Bright of Sheringham. The leading Amateur was young England International Toby Briggs of Dunston Hall with a 4 under par 140 total, closely followed by aspiring super-star Jack Yule of Middleton Hall on a 2 under par 142. Thomas Nudd of Royal Norwich came 3rd on 146, with Charlie Rains of Ryston Park 4th on 147, and William Farley of Barnham Broom right on his heels with a 148. Matthew Bacon of Costessey Park Golf Club for the second year in a row, won the Henry Craske Memorial Salver for the best low aggregate score, when combining the results of the Norfolk Amateur Championship with the Norfolk Open Championship.

Barnard Trophy

Swaffham GC played host to the Barnard Trophy Final of 2015. The course was in great condition and a tribute to the work undertaken by the management and staff producing a great stage for golf. It is often said that it's the "taking part" that counts, and this was truly a game where taking part was the winner. It does take two to make a final and this was indeed a final to remember with both teams giving of their all. Happy memories. King's Lynn and Weston Park had fought hard and long throughout the year to get to the final and their golf on the day reflected their efforts. It was nip and tuck all day. The lead exchanged hands on many occasions during the match and the result was in

doubt right up until the last hole. Game 1 and 3 went the way of Weston Park with game 2 going to Kings Lynn, giving King's Lynn the smallest of an overall lead at that point of just 1 hole. The final game was all square going to the 18th. Weston Park needing a win to extend the match and King's Lynn needing a half to secure it, and the Trophy. Tensions were high, but the steel of King's Lynn carried the day by taking the honours on the last, to give Kings Lynn a winning margin of 2 holes and securing the title of Barnard Trophy Winners 2015. The match was played in the very best of good spirits, reflecting the friendship that comes out of such sporting rivalry. A great day was complimented by a super, post match meal, followed by the Vice President of the County presenting the Trophy and winners medals to the King's Lynn team and runners-up medals to the Weston Park team.

The 2015 Seniors Championships

Sprowston Manor proved an excellent venue for the Seniors County Championships. The course was in fantastic condition attested to by some 82 players who set out on their quest to be crowned County Champion. Tony Richards, Captain of Sheringham took the title of County Champion with an impressive gross 77 on a day, where low scoring was going to be a premium. Just pipping defending champion David Pattrick from Royal Cromer, who recorded a gross 78 taking second spot from Roger Finney of Eaton also on 78 on countback. The final podium places went to John Tavener of Weston Park finishing 4th on 79 and Robert Pateman of Swaffham, taking 5th with an 80. Norfolk Seniors

by Bernie Peet

Norfolk Seniors busy playing season continues with several matches to report on. The East Anglian Seniors League is going much better for Norfolk this year, with a win against Suffolk already in the bag. The next match was against Cambridgeshire, at Weston Park, and after the morning foursomes Norfolk found themselves 3-2 down but the afternoon singles went brilliantly with only one defeat, so Norfolk won the match 10-5, their second league win of the season. There were maximum wins for Paul Whiting, Steve Greatrix and Tony Lount. The next league match was against a very strong Northamptonshire side at Swaffham. This did not go well for Norfolk, despite finding themselves 3-2 ahead at lunch after the foursomes, the afternoon singles were very disappointing with only 2 wins and 1 half being recorded, so the match was lost 91/2 to 51/2. Paul Whiting again won both his matches and Michael Horley and Alan Hewison were unbeaten on the day.

Next up was the Triangular match against Suffolk and Cambridgeshire at Eaton. Norfolk played much better in this match and every player contributed to a fine win, the final scores being Norfolk 441/2, Suffolk 35 and Cambridgeshire 101/2. In the singles Alan Hewison, Paul Pritty, Trevor Cave, Richard Blakey, Barry Clarke and Bernie Vaughan all achieved maximum wins.

The annual match against Norfolk Past Captains was next, played at Middleton Hall. The format for this match was 4ball better ball using Myhill scoring. Despite having to give a very generous number of shots, Norfolk Seniors recorded their first win in this fixture for many years with a 12 hole victory. There were good wins for Malcolm Carr/Alan Hewison – 5 up and Doug Gilchrist/Paul Ellis – 6 up. This is a match that everyone looks forward to and is always good fun to play in. We would like to say a big thank you to all the clubs for hosting these events and making everyone welcome, it is much appreciated by all the players.

Travelling was required for the next two fixtures, the South East Group foursomes and singles. The six man team singles was held at Thorpeness, but sadly captain Terry Norman received 3 call offs and the team could only finish 9th, many thanks to the players that stepped in at late notice. The foursomes this year was held at Aspley Guise in Bedfordshire and Norfolk only just failed to qualify, finishing second to the hosts, Bedfordshire, the result only being confirmed when the last hole was completed. Finally congratulations to captain Terry Norman who was selected for the UK SGA Masters in Odense, Denmark. This is a six man team for players over 70 and 20 countries competed. The UK team won this

MUNDESLEY GC AM-AM

Seniors Invitation Day at Middleton Hall Golf Club is always popular with members and their guests. This year, 52 players took part for the many prizes on offer. Nearest the Pin in two shots on the tricky 7th hole was won by Lilian Mummery. Nearest the pin in one on the 11th was won by Nigel Hawkins and on the 15th by Brian Shales. The best front nine was won by Phil Rumball and John Scales with 23 points and the prize on the back nine went to Jim Hudson and John Hewitt with 24 points.

The competition for the main prizes was fierce, with two teams leading the way on 48 points. Eleanor Kelly and Deborah O'Brien took first place on countback, narrowly edging Tony Reid and Ian McKenzie into second. Third place went to Flora Horne and Roger Sloper with 47 points. The winners were presented with their prizes by Malcolm Doughty, Seniors Captain and are pictured (left to right) Flora Horne, Roger Sloper, Eleanor Kelly, Deborah O'Brien, Malcom Doughty, Tony Read, Ian McKenzie

Mundesley Golf Club held their annual team Am-Am event with 17 teams, many returning year after year, competed over 27 holes stopping after each 9 for refreshments and banter. Many teams have built up their own individual competitions which all helps to make the day fun and is something for which the organisers strive. They are grateful to the sponsors and all the participants for enabling them to raise £1141 for club funds. The winners were Marks Marvels (M. Smith, T. Smith, B. Bensley, C. Cutting) with 159 pts. NTP's were won by P. Craske, P. Ellis, D. Crosby and D. Stuart.

“A WORD”

from your Norfolk Golf County Development Officer

Let’s all work together to stop the ‘leaky bucket’ Often when we talk about increasing membership, the tendency is that the conversation focuses solely on recruitment initiatives. Whilst recruitment is vital to keep bringing in new people to our game, increase accessibility and grow participation, retention of existing members already in our clubs is also very important and this has never been more challenging for clubs than it is now. According to the England Golf Club Questionnaire results from 2014, on average, golf clubs in Norfolk recruit 88 new members in a two year period which positively is above the national average of 77. However, on average our clubs also lose 71 members in the same period. So how can we stop the ‘leaky bucket’?

Whilst this is useful and certainly good practice, it could however be argued it is club promoting the benefit of membership as well as it could do to existing and potential members? too late at this stage as they have already made the decision to leave and more needs to be done before It’s also worth remembering that happy, satisfied this. members will promote their club to many others and are In order to retain members effectively, it is imperative clubs understand what their customers want. Regular membership surveys are a great way for clubs to start to look at what they do well and what could be improved and understand general satisfaction levels of the membership with various aspects of the club. I recommend doing this at least once a year and then using the information to inform future plans based on facts rather than any anecdotal evidence.

As a member with a vested interest in a club I’m sure we all want to feel valued and would like the chance to voice our opinions and be consulted with regularly. If this is done anonymously then clubs can gain some really honest, valuable feedback to consider. As with any business, it is vital to try and fully understand your customer and their motivations if you are going to be able to truly provide the service they want and therefore retain them at your facility. Regular membership surveys can help clubs identify those demographics of member who might be ‘at risk’ of leaving. This will hopefully then lead to actions being implemented to address the issue before it is too late.

Membership surveys can also help clubs to understand why people join as a member in the first place and it

often the best marketing tool we have.

One last point, research also suggests that the majority of people that leave golf club membership do so within the first 18 months. Some of the reasons listed include; not becoming integrated and made to feel part of the club and not being made to feel welcome by existing members and having no one to play with. As golf club members, we also have a big part to play in this and should take some responsibility for ensuring to maintain that our clubs are friendly, welcoming and enjoyable places to be for everyone. Oh, and, if your club ask you to complete a membership survey, please do it openly and honestly but also in the right and proper way! If your club would like more information or support on retention of members or any other area, please do get in contact and I’ll be only too happy to help.

Here’s hoping for a few more weeks of good golfing weather before the waterproofs and winter mittens have to come out and in true ‘Strictly’ fashion - Keep Golfing!

Richmond Park Golf Club was a lovely setting for the 2015 Norfolk County Golf Union Boys Championships by Mike Devlin - Hon Secretary

The course was in excellent condition and the weather behaved itself. After 36 holes of golf the players enjoyed a delicious meal, followed by prize presentations from County Junior Manager Norman Blanch and County Vice President Graham Turner. The scores reflected how well the course played and a testament to the skill of these young players. The new Junior County Champion for 2015 is Toby Lane of Dunston Hall, firing a fantastic 147 gross over Toby Lane of Dunston Hall being presented with the the two rounds. Toby will go forward to Woodhall Spa trophy by County Vice President Graham Turner Golf Club to represent Norfolk in the Junior Champion of Champions Tournament later in the year. Finishing 2nd was Giles Evans of Barnham Broom returning a 149, with Will Farley also of Barnham Broom finishing 3rd, a shot behind on 150. Jack Staines completed the podium in 4th place with a score of 151. In the Handicap division, Josh Emery of Royal Norwich emerged as the Handicap Champion with an impressive 11 under par nett score of 131 for the two rounds. Finishing 2nd was Ruanaq Rai of Eaton firing a 5 under par total of 137, with 3rd place going to Liam Kevern of Dereham also returning a 3 under par score of 139. I imagine the Handicap Secretary’s of their clubs might be having a word. U16 Champion Warren Bates Under 16 Champion for 2015 is Warren Bates of Heacham Manor. Warren with rounds of 72 and 78 for a 150 total just pipped fellow competitor Jack Cullington of Bawburgh who shot 76 and 75 for a 151 result and finishing 2nd. In 3rd place was Finlay Heywood of Eaton with a 152 total. The under 16 Handicap Championship went to James Collins of Weston Park with a terrific 7 under par total of 135, finishing 3 clear of second place Jack Gibson of Eaton who returned a creditable 4 under par 138. Kieran Myatt of Royal Norwich, finished 3rd on 139 still some 3 under par. Team honours went to Bawburgh Golf Club for the Scratch Shield with a team of Jack Cullington, Jack Staines and James Rowswell returning a total of 465 gross. Eaton Golf Club won the Handicap Team Shield with a team of Ruanaq Rai, Finlay Heywood and Matt Campbell with a total score of 430 nett. DOUBLE DEB DELIGHT AT CALDECOTT HALL Caldecott Hall's Lady Captains Cup took place in almost perfect golfing conditions and amongst the field competing for this trophy were the two Debbies, Debbie Matthewson and Debbie Jary. Out in the first group, Debbie Jary was leader in the clubhouse after her course record equalling round of three over par, netting her 41 points. However, as more scores came in she knew it was going to be a close run thing. She held on to her lead until the very last group, when Debbie Matthewson handed in her card. Playing off a handicap of 21, no one had told Debbie M that she wasn't supposed to shoot 6 pars in her round, which netted her the same 41 points, beating Debbie J on countback. Also to be won that day were two nearest the pin prizes and guess who won those? Debbie M on the 4th and Debbie J on the 17th making a true double Deb delight!

100 hole success for charity at Searles Golf Club Led by Searles Golf Men’s Captain Rob Hills, Paul Searle (Director), Ray Stocker (PGA Professional) and Trevor Dennis (Head greenkeeper) successfully completed playing 100 holes of golf in one day all in aid of the Dementia Care Ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, this year’s chosen Captains Charity. Commencing at 7.30am in the morning and playing foursomes format, the four intrepid golfers started out in good conditions for the challenge. Storming round the Searles 9 hole course and taking about 45 minutes per 9 holes, they made good progress throughout the morning having completed 7 rounds (or 63 holes) by the time they stopped for lunch. Unfortunately the weather had turned for the afternoon with heavy rain soaking them through but not dampening spirits. By 6.15pm they had completed 11 rounds of the enjoyable 9 hole course and only needed to play the par 3 9th hole one more time to make up the 100 holes. With cheer from a crowd of friends and family, watching from the covered decking area of the Fountain Sports Bar, the four golfers sunk their final putts and posed for pictures with big smiles despite the heavy rain. As a means of gaining more revenue for the charity, supporters of the event were able to guess how many shots the golfing teams would take. The final number of shots taken was revealed later in the evening in front of a packed Fountain Sports Bar with Rob and Ray playing 412 and Paul and Trevor playing 439, both impressive scores with a par for the 100 holes of 377. In a fun competition between themselves a handicap difference of 27.8 had been calculated therefore with a difference 0.8 of a short, Paul and Trevor beat Rob and Ray. Through sponsorship, an impressive raffle with excellent prizes, and much bucket shaking, by Ladies Captain Margaret Kent and Teresa Hills a total of £2500 was raised. Esme Corner member of Searles Golf Club and Governor of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, announced that the “New West Newton Ward specifically for Dementia care had just been completed and the money raised from this event will go directly to continuing to improve the facility for the benefit of the patients.” Fakenham Golf Club held it’s annual President’s week and President’s day competitions. President Betrand Reynolds had 60 entrants play in the mid week stableford. A nine hole shotgun fun competition filled the course after which a Thai food supper was served to the players. Presidents Day was a better ball pairs stableford, which again attracted a full house, and all players enjoyed fine weather and the excellent course.

To celebrate the successful completion of the 100 holes, a celebration party had been organised, with a tasty BBQ put on by the catering team and superb entertainment provided by local band ‘The Decomposers’ who’s lead singer Ian White is a member of Searles Golf Club. Searles Golf Club Captain Rob Hills stated: “As Men's Golf Club Captain I always knew that I wanted to do something that had never been done at Searles Leisure Resort. I decided to commit to completing 100 holes of golf for the Dementia Care Ward at the Queens Elizabeth Hospital. Luckily for me, the three others offered to take part in my charity idea and am blown away by the amount raised, I would like to personally thank everyone who helped me make this event such a great success.”

ANOTHER GOOD RESULT FOR NORFOLK

At the English Schools’ Golf Association U16 National Championships at Kirby Muxloe Golf Club in Leicestershire, Amelia Williamson from Norwich High School for Girls and Royal Cromer Golf Club completed a winning triple in schools’ golf by capturing the girls’ title. Amelia (right) was already the Girls’ National Champion and the Girls’ South East Regional Champion for 2015. She was up against strong opposition from Emily Price of Shropshire, Hannah Screen of Hertfordshire (last year’s winner) and Emily May Humphreys of Essex. After the morning round Amelia was one off the pace after Emily Price scored a 74 but in the afternoon she had a round of 71 which gave her a total of 75+71=146 with Emily scoring 74+75=149. Last year’s champion Hannah Screen had scores of 79+71=150 with Adrian Mylrea of Hampshire taking second place with 75+72=147. Amy Taylor of Wymondham College and Bawburgh Golf Club finished in a credible 7th place with scores of 76+78=154. Abigail O’Riordan of Wayland Academy and Thetford Golf Club finished in the middle of the field. Amelia’s next schools’ event was the international against Wales at Sherwood Forest Golf Club and both Amelia and Amy will be heading north of the border to play against Scotland in September. Amelia will captain the England Girls in both matches. At the International against Wales at Sherwood Forest Golf Amelia played her part in England winning by 91/2 to 81/2 in a thrilling match when England were 5-1 down after the morning foursomes. England won the afternoon singles 81/2 to 31/2 with Amelia winning 2&1 in her match.

One of last year’s joint winners, Tom Clements (Eaton Golf Club) made a strong start in the morning shooting a 8 under par 64, which would have been a record, but due to heavy over night rain the competition had to be played under preferred rules. Tom did not drop one shot in the morning and his win was secured by another sub par round of 71 in the afternoon to give him a 9 under total of 135. In second position was Ian Ellis on 140 and for the PGA Norfolk representative’s third place went to new trainee Nic Cains from Swaffham, followed by county chairman Mike Jubb (Sheringham) who just pipped his young trainee, Charlie Bright, by one shot.

Following the competition the new Order of Merit still shows Ian Ellis heading the leader board.
