JOURNEY TO 100 YEARS

Spring 2025

ST.FRANCIS statue CONTENTS

Haveyou driven by St. Francis High School recently, especially at night, and noticed something different, but you were left scratching your head because you couldn't figure out what it was? Our beloved statue of our patron, Saint Francis, succumbed to Mother Nature’s wrath and toppled over, rendering him irreparable. While the loss of this iconic figure saddens us, we will rebuild, and a statue of our patron will take his rightful place in front of our school.

JOURNEY TO 100 YEARS ON THE COVER

Our centennial anniversary is on the horizon, and as we approach this milestone, we will reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. The cover of this edition of the Tau represents that journey from the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi to our Founder, Fr. Justin Figas, to the shores of Lake Erie and St. Francis High School.

Plans are underway to commemorate significant events in the school’s history as we approach 2027. July 12, 2025, marks 100 years since the groundbreaking and cornerstone laying. Save the date as we commemorate this moment in our school’s history with a mass blessing of the cornerstone. Be sure to watch for formal information about this historic event.

Dear Friends of St. Francis,

As it gets warmer, I spend many evenings sitting outside the friary, looking out over Lake Erie, thinking, praying, and taking in the beauty of creation and our campus. The friars before me have enjoyed the same view. Fr. Justin, Fr. Rufinus, and Fr. Joe gazed upon the same lake, wanting what was best for the students of St. Francis.

I think of their legacy as we approach our 100th anniversary. So much has changed at St. Francis, but the important things stay the same: our young men thrive in all they do and uphold our commitment to Franciscan education.

This issue of the Tau shows the fantastic things our students are involved with on campus. Students like Griff and Cullen have helped us become the top wrestling school in New York. Connor, Robert, and Ben have had a fantastic senior year with our jazz ensemble and just returned from their trip to New Orleans. You’ll read about Jack, a true Renaissance man who is as comfortable in the classroom as he is on the putting green or the stage.

But this isn’t new; St. Francis students have been impressive since 1927. We remind our students that they are part of a brotherhood, which connects them with St. Francis men who have come before. This past March, we welcomed such an opportunity for our young men as we held our second annual Alumni Career Day, which gave our students a unique opportunity to hear directly from St. Francis Alumni about

various career paths and professional experiences. Each year, one graduate is honored at graduation. It’s rarely an easy choice because many would be worthy. This issue updates us on several alumni who have been honored as the men of the year.

In January, we welcomed our newest members of the class of 2029. Looking at these young men and their families, I realize one will be a man of the year, and others will thrive in the classroom, on the mat, and on the stage. They will be inspired and mentored by older brothers who had the same done for them. Each of us is a link in the chain of St. Francis’s story, a chain that we are preparing for the next Century.

Peace and good,

ACCEPTED students

STUDENT ATHLETES spotlight

Cullen EDWARDS

In the fall of 2023, St. Francis Wrestling got a significant upgrade to its roster when student athlete Cullen Edwards decided to “bring his talents” to Athol Springs. Cullen transferred from Frontier High School to St. Francis to start his sophomore year of high school as a Red Raider. Cullen’s athletic focus was and is wrestling. For Cullen, St. Francis Wrestling was a program he thought could take his athletic career to the next level.

Cullen is what our wrestling staff refers to as a “Legacy Kid”. By that, we mean he is part of a long line of family members that are alumni of St. Francis. His father, Dennis Edwards (’89), uncle, Bill Edwards (’97), uncle, Anthony Edwards (’99) uncle, Chris Obstarczyk (’93) uncle, John Obstarczyk (’97), brothers, Liam Edwards (’21) and Nolan Edwards (’24) are all proud graduates of St. Francis High School. It was always Cullen’s intent to end up as a Red Raider and continue the family “Legacy”. His father, Dennis, Uncles, Bill and Tony, and brother, Liam were all successful wrestlers for St. Francis. Cullen has been passed the family torch and is representing his family, his school, his sport, and himself very well.

Cullen started his high school wrestling career at Frontier competing on varsity as an 8th grader. His success came very quickly as he finished as the Section 6 runner up at 101lbs. His 2nd

place finish earned him a bid to compete at the NYSPHSAA State Championships. This would be his first of consecutive trips to the State Championships. In his first outing, Cullen gained valuable experience competing on such a big stage, but fell short of placing. It was a lesson learned and back to work in the offseason to continue to develop for next season. Freshmen year for Cullen was another successful year on the mat. He avenged his second place finish by becoming the Section 6 Champion at 108 lbs. He was headed back to the State Championships to battle for his goal of becoming a State Champion. But Cullen again fell short of getting on the podium. He was devastated. It was then that he and his family knew that they needed something more to reach his ultimate goal. After that school year, Cullen decided to make the commitment to come to St. Francis.

In 2023, St. Francis was an up and coming program that was undergoing a huge change. It was quickly becoming a “Destination” Program with the addition of some high level coaches and athletes. Cullen was a huge part of the new found success of the program. He adapted exceptionally well to the new environment and culture St. Francis had to offer. His amazing work ethic and determination fit perfectly with the expectation and goals of the school and wrestling program. Now with great workout partners, committed coaching, a high level environment,

and school support, Cullen had what he needed to jump levels in his athletic and academic fields. Cullen had the most successful season of his career finishing as All-Catholic Champion, CHSAA Champion, and again earning a bid to the NYSPHSAA Championships at 108lbs. But this year would be different. He finally got over the hump and placed 6th, wrestling the best he’s ever wrestled in his career! The move to St. Francis proved to be very beneficial for Cullen!!

This past season was Cullen’s Junior year and he kept climbing the ladder of success. With his new found confidence, training regimen, commitment level, and support, Cullen got better and better. He kicked off his pre-season competing at a national tournament in Michigan. Cullen would shock many by walking away as the Champion and finding his way into the national rankings. That was only the beginning. He repeated as AllCatholic Champion, repeated as CHSAA Champion, and again earned his way to the State Championships at 116lbs. With another amazing performance, he would out do his finish from the previous year and finish 4th in NYS!

Cullen has become the model student, athlete, and young man that we are proud represents St. Francis Wrestling. The school and athletic program have played a significant role in Cullen’s growth as a young man.

Wrestling history was made this year and all at the hands of junior Griffin LaPlante. Griffin made MMHSAA history this year by becoming the FIRST EVER Federation State Champion in the league’s history! Griffin’s title came from dominating wins beating all of his state tournament opponents by at least 10 points in each bout. Along with his title, Griffin surpassed the milestone of 200 wins ending the season with 205. Griffin also ends the season being ranked the 4th best Pound for Pound wrestler in New York State by NYWRESTLING and has verbally committed to wrestling at national powerhouse, NC State, at the conclusion of his high school run. Griffin will be returning next year for his senior season leading the #1 State ranked Red Raiders to another historical season. Stay tuned….BIG THINGS happening with St. Francis Wrestling!

Griffin L aPLANTE

We are proud of the achievements both Cullen and Griffin have worked so hard to showcase themselves as role models for excellence. The school and athletic program have played a significant role in their growth as young men and I could not be more proud to have taken this journey with them.

MODERN renaissance man

When we talk about a St. Francis Education, one of the recurring themes has been the idea of the Renaissance man. A truly well-rounded individual who excels in many areas, is humble, and has a good sense of himself and others. This vision of the “St. Francis Renaissance Man” applies to many young men who walk the halls of St. Francis High School. Senior, Jack Tebeau is one of those young men. A gifted athlete and student. He performs on stage and is dedicated to service. Jack takes advantage of all the opportunities that St. Francis High School has to offer. We asked Jack to reflect on what being a modern-day Renaissance Man at St. Francis means from the student perspective.

It’s hard to believe that my 4 years at St. Francis are ending soon. It seems like just yesterday that I was visiting schools and talking with my parents about where I would be spending my high school years. I’ve told many people that I chose St. Francis because it felt like home. I met SFHS golf Coaches, Stephenson and Cullen, before I made my decision and they along with SFHS alumni, Peter and Paul Goszewski. (who told me when I was 5 that they wouldn’t be my friend if I went to a different school) helped me realize that being a Red Raider was right for me.

As a freshman, I was focused on sports and academics. Golf, Basketball and Bowling were my main priorities my freshman year and combined with being a Paduan Scholar, my plate was full. My sophomore year I started to think a bit differently and it really changed my High School experience. While I loved basketball, and still do, I realized that I did not have the time to dedicate myself to multiple winter sports, so I opted to concentrate on the sport that I was best at, which was bowling. I became better at managing my time and when I found out that I had a bit more, decided to do something very different and auditioned for the musical. I’m glad that I did for so many reasons.

I had seen many plays before, but I never had an appreciation for how much effort and teamwork went into putting on a show. The singing and dancing were just part of it. The team that builds out the sets, stage managers and coordination with the band were all things I just didn’t think about until I was a part of the process. I still smile when I think

about my first dance lesson with choreographer, Jason Torres, and how we all laughed until we cried when I put on the size 13 tap shoes and promptly wiped-out leaving bruises that would be with me for a few weeks. “They don’t make tap shoes in size 13 for a reason,” Jason joked. I had a lot more fun doing the show than I ever imagined, and I made friends with classmates that I never would have connected with if I hadn’t participated.

I am grateful to Fr. Mark David and Mr. DeVries for giving me a part in “Mack and Mable,” because being a part of the play had a snowball effect for me. I decided to try as many new things as I could fit into my already busy schedule. I joined the band (maybe with a nudge or two from Mr. Vitale), joined the chorus, became active in student government / house leadership, worked on the yearbook, and got in front of the camera with WSTF. In my time here at St. Francis I’ve tried to raise my hand to volunteer at events and fundraisers, been a school ambassador at in-school functions and have been honored to represent SFHS many times at recruitment fairs at local schools.

And yes…I continued with the musicals as a cast member of “Mamma Mia” and “Chicago” my junior and senior year.

Let there be no confusion - the sports that I participate in are my first love, and my “talents” in the arts will not be earning me any accolades, awards or scholarships. That said, stepping out of my comfort zone during my time at St. Francis has provided me with an appreciation of activities and people that would not have been possible if I had stayed on the sidelines.

As I wrap up my final days at St. Francis, I want to thank all the teachers, coaches, and alumni who helped and encouraged me to do more and to be my best throughout my high school career.

In August I will begin the next chapter of my life when I attend Binghamton University, and I look forward to continuing my competitive golf career as a “Bearcat”. I will be wearing a lot of green my next 4 years but there is a part of me that will forever be a St. Francis Red Raider.

Jack

In addition to his participation in the activities above, Jack has earned multiple honors and multiple championships in both golf and bowling:

 8x First Team All-Catholic honoree (4x Golf / 4x Bowling)

• 3x All-Catholic Golf Individual Champion (2021, 2023, 2024)

• NYS High School Federation Golf Champion (2024)

• 2x Meadville Prep High School Invitational Individual Champion (2023, 2024)

• 2x All-Catholic Bowling Individual Champion (2023, 2025)

• 4x NYSCHSAA Bowling State Championship Qualifier

 2022 – 5th place

 2023 – 3rd place

 2024 – 3rd place

 2025 – 2nd place

Jack also takes part in a fundraiser every year where he walks and plays 100 holes of golf in a day. The fundraiser supports the Live Like Luca Foundation and the Courage of Carly. Over the last 4 years he has raised about $30,000.

A FACE LIFT FOR THE STUDENT DINING ROOM

While many of our faculty and students were enjoying a well- deserved Christmas Break, a small crew of workers spent their time transforming the Student Dining Room to reflect our updated branding. Paint, light fixtures, ceiling fans, a microwave station, and new branding helped to update and modernize the space. A special thank you to Fr. Mark David ’71, Mr. Messore ’91, Mr. Monahan, Mr. Bartell ’88, Mr. Cwiklinski, Mr. Poleon and Mr. Kucia for their work on the project. Phase II of the renovation, which includes new furniture and flooring, is slated to take place over the summer. Stay tuned!

A FRANCISCAN SCIENTIFIC EDUCATION

“What does it mean to receive a Franciscan scientific education?” This is likely one of the questions the readers may have asked themselves at some point. The question is undoubtedly a subset of the more significant question “Why choose St. Francis High School?” or “What does it mean to receive a Franciscan education?”. We live in a world where challenges arise by the minute, almost at the same rate at which advances in science, engineering, and technology are being made. From the impact of diseases and pandemics, to the threat of a depleting environment and climate change, are we equipping tomorrow’s scientific leaders for the challenges they will face? In short, what is the point of a scientific education at St. Francis? The answer, believe it or not, lies in the prayer that SFHS students will hear at least weekly during the morning prayer: the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi before the San Damiano Crucifix.

Pursuing scientific knowledge is not an aimless or even a pursuit of knowledge for knowledge’s sake. Rather, it is a purposeful pursuit that aims to ultimately conform to God’s holy and true command Mindfulness of the divine presence is key to helping our students navigate the sometimes disorienting changes happening around us. At St. Francis, we strive to enkindle in our students a thirst for this scientific knowledge, ultimately leading them to desire the true source of all scientific wonders. It starts with continually making science come alive in the classroom. We are thankful for our faculty who understand this and are resolved to meet this challenge head-on.

Students entering the classroom of Mrs. Mia LaMarco, our biology faculty, immediately get the sense that biology is the study of living organisms. From the engaging classroom discussions, to the hands-on lab experiments, students are challenged in her classroom to not only appreciate topics such as protein synthesis, but are primed to grasp later why a scientific achievement such as the latest AlphaFold protein structure database from Google’s DeepMind, which has propelled humanity into a future that was unimaginable only a few years ago, is a feat that won its three authors a Nobel Prize.

Drawing on his experience, Mr. Benjamin Kujawinski ’94, our new earth science and biology faculty, and an alum of St. Francis himself, is passionate about matching the topics in his classroom to their real-world applications. In addition to teaching students topics such as air masses, fronts, and station models, and later having them analyze real-time online weather forecasts of their geographical location, he is constantly upgrading his technological arsenal. Recently, Mr. Kujawinski acquired a high-definition microscope with digital display output, enabling his students to appreciate live microscope samples as a group.

Mr. Jason Cretacci, our chemistry faculty member and senior member of the science department, is always at the forefront of national and state science standards, ensuring that our students

Mrs. Mia LaMarco’s

benefit from an internationally benchmarked science education. As both an athletic coach and dean of one of our Franciscan houses, he is able to develop impactful relationships with the student body that transcend the classroom.

The recent unveiling of our dual-enrollment math and science courses has been a greatly successful addition to our advanced placement course programs. The rise of our STEM curriculum is paving the way to possible engineering and computer science course offerings in the forseeable future. From the acquisition of

new 3D printers, to the success of our recent spring semester STEM Nights and summer robotics camps, we are greatly encouraged by the excitement of our students about the positive changes they are witnessing around them.

It is more important than ever to (re-)focus this next generation of scientific leaders on the ultimate fulfillment of their desire: the God from whom all energy flows

THREE ST. FRANCIS FOOTBALL PLAYERS TO CONTINUE THEIR ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC CAREERS

A football signing ceremony was held at St. Francis High School on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

Mr. Jerry Smith, head football coach introduced the three players and highlighted their accomplishments.

I had the opportunity to catch up with some of our distinguished alumni who have been honored as St. Francis High School’s Man of the Year. I asked them three key questions about the impact high school has had on their lives, what it means to receive this prestigious recognition, and how their experiences at the school continue to shape them today. Their reflections offer a powerful look at the lifelong values and lessons the St. Francis brotherhood instilled.

Gary Kaczor ’76

I am proud to be chosen Man of the Year in 1976. It was, and still is, such an honor to have been recognized and selected for that award at graduation. Many other deserving fellow classmates could easily have been selected, so I feel lucky and am grateful to the faculty at that time for choosing me. With that, I also feel obligated to give back to St. Francis as much as possible. In the community, I enjoy letting people know I am a St. Francis graduate, a St Francis Gentleman, and wear my colors proudly. I have been on the Alumni Board for over 20 years and have also helped with the Capital and Annual Gift Giving campaigns. Recently, over the last 6 years, I have helped out the Varsity Baseball team as one of the assistant coaches. I truly enjoy helping the next generation of Red Raiders be all that they can be. I hope they take advantage of every opportunity presented.

Dr. Greg Pivarunas ’06

It’s a privilege to be included among the fine men who have received this award before and after me. It also challenges me; I treat this honor as a pledge that I need to hold myself to a high standard and always work towards becoming a better person. Perfection is a lifelong journey and can seem a frustrating goal, but as T.S. Eliot said, “For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.”

St. Francis helped show us the importance of faith, and remembering to pray is especially important. Also, I appreciate being taught that hard work and commitment to excellence are rewards in themselves--awards or no awards.

I would tell my younger self that you will always have challenges and that they progressively become harder, but you will build on prior learning and values to overcome them. When a day seems too busy to get everything done or to remember everything you have to do, remember to prioritize time for the most important or timesensitive things. Then, everything is ordered and becomes easier. And don’t forget to thank God for all the gifts you have been given.

Jacob Tasker ’16

In many ways, Man of the Year still means what it meant to me when I graduated in 2016. It means being one of the many examples at St. Francis of a well-rounded man; doing my best to be excellent at whatever task was asked of me, helping those around me to be the best at what is asked of them, and keeping Christ at the center of everything. At St. Francis, I got to be around a lot of great teachers, faculty, and a lot of talented, hard-working guys. I was able to learn from them, adopt their skills, and rely on them for support and encouragement. I always saw the” Man of the Year” as representative for his whole class, and I’m honored to be that man for 2016.

Hard work and excellence have stuck with me the most, both as goals to

strive for and as tools to use. The school demanded a lot from us and required us to grow up quick and learn to take responsibility for our actions and the guys around us.

My advice to my high school self is that consistency will compound. Consistency doesn’t lead to linear progression; and it leads to exponential growth over time. I’ve seen it in my own life and the lives of people I admire. Consistency is not a common quality, and it is very difficult to cultivate, but those who live their lives consistently tend to do incredible things.

Jude Suroweic ’66

Honestly, it’s difficult to say what it means today, 59 years since I was named Boy of the Year, (that’s what it was called back then!!) It hardly reaches the conscious level unless SFHS comes into the conversation. Needless to say, it is a moment to take pride in the accomplishment and to realize that among the thousands of graduates of SFHS, I was blessed enough to be numbered among such a small and distinct group. I also teasingly “brag” that I am also probably one of the few named on plaques on both sides of the main corridor (having also been inducted in the SFHS Athletic Hall of Fame). God is good!!

Many values, qualities, and virtues have grown with me throughout the years, and they probably were sown and nurtured during my SFHS years. Let me mention just two: perseverance and integrity. Even though I may not have been consciously aware of them at the time, they were motivating factors in my life as a young teenager. If and when things become difficult, the notion of “not giving up” played a key role in how I approached any challenges that arose and to do so with an honest effort that put thoughts and words into actions. Being genuine has always been a constant reminder and guide for my words and deeds.

If I could speak to my high school self, I would tell myself to “be me” and to use the talents and blessings given to me by God to the best of my ability. Enjoy the opportunities that you have, and allow the experiences of high school life to shape and form you positively. In hindsight, SFHS was the “garden” where my vocation, first planted in my home, took shape and developed. And here I am, nearly 60 years later!

Jonathon Hageman ’98

Being named “Man of the Year” remains a tremendous honor that reflects the core values instilled in me during my time at St. Francis. Today, it serves as a constant reminder of my duty to exemplify integrity, leadership, and service in all aspects of life. I feel very lucky as the award holds a special place in my heart, as my time at St. Francis was truly transformative. Even after more than 25 years, the relationships I forged and the experiences I gained continue to shape my daily life. The recognition not only reflects my past achievements but also inspires me to make an ongoing commitment to these values. Lastly, it remains something that my friends & family continue to joke around with me about!

Since graduating, the values of compassion, excellence, and community service have consistently guided my path. These principles have shaped my approach to challenges, inspired me to strive for the highest standards, and motivated me to try to contribute positively to my community. The impact of St. Francis for me extends far beyond academic learning; vivid memories of life lessons acquired both in classrooms and through participation in athletics and extracurricular activities continue to influence my decisions and actions.

If I could speak to my high school self, I would emphasize the importance of cherishing every moment, as time passes too quickly, and these years are irreplaceable. I encourage embracing every opportunity for personal and academic growth, understanding that each experience contributes to future success. Nurturing friendships and absorbing the wisdom imparted by teachers and mentors is crucial, as these relationships and lessons will form the bedrock of your future achievements. Importantly, while academic success is valuable, developing a strong character and unwavering integrity is equally, if not more, essential in the long run. These qualities will define you far beyond high school and play a pivotal role in shaping your future.
