The recent warmer weather means that, in between work, I have spent much more time relaxing in the sunshine, walking the dog (when its not too hot) and generally more outdoor life. Which has been great but means my house seems to have more clutter than usual for some reason. So I am in a decluttering and 'spring phase. Cleaning out cupboards I haven't been in for ages and organising my and wardrobe. It's what to do with the clutter. Clothes are easy and fairly quick - they go to the local charity shop or for recycling if they are a bit worse for wear. Some things are clearly not worth doing anything with so they go to the recycling centre if they can. It's the 'other stuff' that I find challenging. Things that I no longer want or need in the house but which have nothing necessarily wrong with them. Of course some can go to the charity shop but what about the things they don't want. 'Green guilt' stops me dumping them in the skips at the recycling centre. So I know I will end up decluttering the house and recluttering the garage! I could try and sell some of it but I know from past experience how much time that takes up and how little money I usually make at the end of it. So most of it will probably get advertised as freebies on the local Facebook groups or in Freecycle. Yes it will take ages but at the end of the day I will feel better that I have recycled and done my bit for the Ienvironment.justneedto set myself a target to declutter the clutter and regain the garage again. Wish me luck.

This is timely action with COP15, the UN Biodiversity Conference, coming up in December. As I said in a recent Westminster debate, biodiversity loss is intrinsically linked with the climate crisis and is an emergency deserving of equal attention. While the conference is not receiving the same coverage as COP26 did in Glasgow last year, the need for leaders to commit to transformational action at COP15 is just as urgent. If we are to bring nature back from the brink, then it will be in large part due to the work of institutions like the RBGE. Our beautiful and greatly loved Botanics has a long and renowned history, with over 350 years as a custodian of global plant collections, but its work in the present and near future will be even more significant.

For many of us, especially those of us living in towns and cities, the concept of biodiversity can sometimes seem a little remote, perhaps conjuring images of exotic plants in a faraway rainforest, or of some rare aquatic species. Rather than being somehow distant or even separate from human life though, biodiversity is actually the very basis for it. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat, all rely on an enormous and remarkably diverse range of animals, plants and microorganisms. We’re lucky enough to have right on our doorstep one of the world’s leading scientific institutions in the preservation and restoration of biodiversity. Perhaps better known to many for its stunning grounds and unique range of plant species, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) is also a centre of excellence in conservation research and horticulture. On average, the RBGE discovers three new species each month that were previously unknown to science! Scientists at the Botanics work with partners in more than 40 countries on recovery and restoration; from forest management with local communities in Tanzania, to satellite data modelling in China and Southeast Asia, to its Centre for Middle Eastern Plants, and much more. The RBGE also of course leads many projects in Scotland, including fighting threats from emerging plant disease - such as Phytophthora pluvialis, the fungus-like pathogen that attacks many tree speciesand reintroducing threatened species like the Alpine Blue-sow-thistle in the Grampians, and the Isle of Arran’s Whitebeam, one of the most endangered trees in the world. With biodiversity declining at a frightening rate - faster than at any point in human history - the work of institutions like RBGE is absolutely critical. Around two-thirds of plant species are now threatened with extinction, while the number of animals living on Earth has halved since 1970. In Scotland, we’ve already lost nearly a quarter of our wildlife. A recent RSPB’s State of Nature report found that 15% of species assessed across the UK are at risk of disappearing for good, including native species like the Scottish wildcat, the capercaillie, and the Scottish primrose.

That's why Scotland has been taking action to protect and rebuild our natural habitats – planting trees and vegetation to revitalise our woodlands and forests, restoring driedout Scottish peatland, and establishing new protected marine areas. A consultation has been launched to create at least one new national park by 2026 and the upcoming biodiversity strategy from the Scottish government will include a target to halt nature loss by 2030 and reverse it by 2045.

An Article From Deidre Brock MP

12

Scotland’s also shown international leadership by coordinating the Edinburgh Declaration, a statement of intent signed by partners on every continent, calling for a bigger role to be given to state and regional governments, cities, and local authorities in ending biodiversity erosion.

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses the power of suggestion to encourage positive change. For many, it is an incredibly effective form of treatment and one that can have many benefits, from weight management, managing anxiety, easing stress and encouraging relaxation, to quitting negative habits such as sugar, smoking and alcohol, as well as busting phobias like fear of flying, spiders etc. on the client and their reasons for seeking hypnotherapy, sometimes just one session may be all that’s needed to bring about positive change, or it may require a number Clients can also be taught self-hypnosis techniques to continue their treatment after

Consultation Hub

For those residents who use the Council’s garden waste collection service (brown bins), the new year (2022/23) registration window is now open and will close on 6th September at 2pm. It is priced at £35 per bin. Letters and permits will then be sent out from the end of October. Please keep in mind that the service suspends over Christmas from 19th December 2022 until 15th January 2023, although this should be detailed within the calendars you will receive. It’s easiest to register online at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/gardenwaste.

26

If residents have any issues with registration, the team can be contacted directlu on gardenwaste@edinburgh. gov.uk – please do let me know if I can help at all as well.

Finally, I would like to draw to residents’ attention two public consultations that the Council is conducting. One is about short-term lets and the other on women’s safety in public places. Last year, the Council agreed that due to many women and girls not feeling safe in certain areas or settings in Edinburgh, it would be beneficial to consult residents and better understand what the Council can do when place-making as if the space is safe for women and girls, it should feel safe for everyone. The consultation relating to short-term lets is the next stage for the Council in developing its policies and framework in advance of the licensing scheme opening in October this year. Properties will need to meet a minimum safety standard and be licensed by July 2024. Please see the Council’s consultation hub (https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/) to submit your views. Please don’t hesitate to contact Inverleith Ward councillor Max Mitchell by email, max.mitchell@edinburgh.gov.uk, or by phone on 0131 529 4409, with any local issues or questions.

I hope everyone has had a lovely summer and been able to enjoy a fuller return of our city’s festivals. The number of shows taking place is very nearly at the same level as 2019.

I am certainly interested to learn about sales and uptake of events following the last couple of years as well as residents’ views.

An Update From Councillor Max Mitchell

‘The Snakey’ & the Handrail I was very grateful to the residents who contacted me about ‘The Snakey’ (the path between Saxe Coburg Place and Glenogle Road) and the installation of the handrail. Supply chain issues have been impacting many aspects of our lives recently, and these issues prevented the installation of the handrail as originally planned. However, the work was completed, and the rail installed in mid-July. The project, although simple on the face of it, has been a long time in the making! Garden Waste 2022/23

One of the best things about running a small private fitness studio is that as a Personal Trainer I can help people who really need it. Over the last 17 years I’ve helped many clients reach personal goals and enjoy adventures. Over lockdown I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jeanette, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) a decade ago. We’ve been doing weekly studio sessions, and Skype webcam workouts too. Over the last two years I’ve seen Jeanette’s balance and strength improve, and now she’s tackling Three Peaks for a fundraiser.

1. Arthurs Seat: 261 metres to summit, 10th August 2022.

2. Cairngorm Mountain: 7th highest mountain in UK. Elevation 1,245 metres. Scramble to the summit on 27th August 2022.

“My name is Jeanette and I've had Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) for 10 years. I was medically retired three years ago due to MS. Multiple Sclerosis has no cure and plays havoc on your body, mental health, and your life. I see myself as fortunate because I am still mobile and independent with the support of aids and support networks. I recently tried the AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill – it’s a treadmill with zero gravity that allows those with mobility issues to walk and run again. Chris is my inspiration, he’s a 36 yearold husband and father who was diagnosed with MS six years ago. His condition deteriorated quickly and he uses an electric wheelchair to get about. I watched Chris walking on the treadmill for 30 seconds and it completely blew me away. He can normally only walk a couple of steps I’m embarking on an ambitious Alternative Three Peaks Challenge for people less fortunate than myself, to raise £40,000 to purchase an AltG Anti-Gravity Treadmill for the Compass Centre, a charity that works with those who are managing neurological conditions in the Lothians and surrounding areas. My Alternative Three Peaks Challenge consists of
