Update From Councillor Max Mitchell

An Update From Councillor Max Mitchell

I hope everyone has had a lovely summer and been able to enjoy a fuller return of our city’s festivals. The number of shows taking place is very nearly at the same level as 2019. I am certainly interested to learn about sales and uptake of events following the last couple of years as well as residents’ views.

‘The Snakey’ & the Handrail

I was very grateful to the residents who contacted me about ‘The Snakey’ (the path between Saxe Coburg Place and Glenogle Road) and the installation of the handrail. Supply chain issues have been impacting many aspects of our lives recently, and these issues prevented the installation of the handrail as originally planned. However, the work was completed, and the rail installed in mid-July. The project, although simple on the face of it, has been a long time in the making!

Garden Waste 2022/23

For those residents who use the Council’s garden waste collection service (brown bins), the new year (2022/23) registration window is now open and will close on 6th September at 2pm. It is priced at £35 per bin. Letters and permits will then be sent out from the end of October. Please keep in mind that the service suspends over Christmas from 19th December 2022 until 15th January 2023, although this should be detailed within the calendars you will receive. It’s easiest to register online at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/gardenwaste. If residents have any issues with registration, the team can be contacted directlu on gardenwaste@edinburgh. gov.uk – please do let me know if I can help at all as well.

Consultation Hub

Finally, I would like to draw to residents’ attention two public consultations that the Council is conducting. One is about short-term lets and the other on women’s safety in public places. Last year, the Council agreed that due to many women and girls not feeling safe in certain areas or settings in Edinburgh, it would be beneficial to consult residents and better understand what the Council can do when place-making as if the space is safe for women and girls, it should feel safe for everyone. The consultation relating to short-term lets is the next stage for the Council in developing its policies and framework in advance of the licensing scheme opening in October this year. Properties will need to meet a minimum safety standard and be licensed by July 2024. Please see the Council’s consultation hub (https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/) to submit your views.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Inverleith Ward councillor Max Mitchell by email, max.mitchell@edinburgh.gov.uk, or by phone on 0131 529 4409, with any local issues or questions.
