Welcome To The November Stockbridge Spotlight I hope that all the local residents reading this are safe and well in these uncertain times. By the time you receive this issue I don’t know where we will be in terms of tiers and lockdown - all I know is that things are not getting any easier. Times are tough for everyone just now. As someone who runs a small business, I know how hard it is for anyone who is self employed at the moment and trying to keep their business afloat. I have an elderly parent who lives on her own and is desperatly missing the company and enjoyment of the various groups she used to go to that can no longer run so I can appreciate the effect the current situation is having on elderly people. At the other end of the scale, I have friends who have children of various ages at school who are worried about the spread of Covid in schools and classrooms. And for the older children there is the potential impact on exams and their future. Appointments with the NHS are just not happening, there is a huge backlog of patients awaiting treatment for all sorts of issues and there is no sign of any catch up or improvement of this situation. I would like to be able to say I can see a light at the end of the tunnel but alas that is not the case at the moment. All I can say to people reading this is be strong, be kind to each other as much as possible and, most importantly, stay safe. If the situation is getting you down phone a friend for a chat, think about watching a film you haven’t seen but have always meant to watch, read a new book, get the cards out and play a game with the kids or your other half or simply go for a walk. It’s not easy but it’s the little things that can help you get through each day. Please stay positive, things will eventually get better!!

The Howdah Tea & Coffee Company By Paul Farquhar

I have spent over 30 years working in the hospitality and catering trade, for over 20 of which I have had my own business, in Edinburgh, London, Spain, and France. 10 years ago my family relocated from France to my wife’s hometown of North Berwick where we were lucky to acquire The Howdah Tea & Coffee Co. It had a small presence on the high street, we moved to larger premises incorporating into a deli and it organically grew. Last year we decided to move to Edinburgh and in September opened Howdah, located right in the heart of Stockbridge. Our design and colour scheme somewhat changed half way through the renovation as we discovered some original tiling on the walls and floor, which we have since learned date back to 1925, part of the Maypole Dairy. It seemed ludicrous to cover these back up so we have done our best to restore, embody, and welcome them back into the hussle and bussle of Stockbridge life! We are very much a sampling room, you can have a scrumptious cake or a tasty toastie, but our main focus is the retail of Beans and Leaves. We provide some well established and high end eateries within Scotland, many clubhouses, cafes and some catering companies. We have over 100 varieties of beans and leaves and we encourage our wholesale customers to spend some time tasting, and experimenting with the coffee beans to find their perfect and signature blend. We very much look forward to welcoming locals to sample what we have to offer. However if you prefer good tea and coffee in the comfort of your in home please visit our website, www.howdah.co.uk and we can easily post you some tea leaves or coffee beans, whole or ground. Or you may just find yourself unknowingly sampling our flavours after a meal or a round of golf!

Get Fit and Enjoy It: Learn How To Exercise From Home By Tracy Griffen

Have you ever wanted to get fit from home, but don’t know where to start? Maybe you’ve been injured, or haven’t exercised for awhile. Or perhaps you have developed a ‘lockdown belly’ (yes, it is a thing). Back in March when my fitness studio was shut down for lockdown, I wondered what the best use of my time could be. I needed something constructive to do, and I wanted to reach out and show people how they could enjoy exercise from home. Knowledge is power, as they say. Over summer I wrote Get Fit and Enjoy It, which is basically the ‘Griffen method’ to

22

staying in shape. Based on over 15 years of experience training individuals of all ages and abilities, it aims to show you how to improve your fitness (and confidence) using minimal equipment. This full-colour book is 113 pages long, taking you through the process of designing your very own exercise programme. It’s a very ‘in house’ production (literally!), you will even spot Coco the fitness pug (my studio assistant) on the front cover. In our lounge room. When it was first designed, the original front cover had skinny models doing impossible exercises - but this is a realistic fitness book that needed a more homely cover, so the cover photos were shot in our house... Staying fit and healthy is essential for good

mood, especially over the darker months and you don’t even need to go to a gym. Here’s what you’ll learn: • Goal setting and how to get started • 64 fully illustrated exercises, with clear instructions • Ideas for tailoring your workout to your needs • Fitness ideas no matter the weather • How to stay focused and see real results It is a fitness book especially written for the times. If we’re going to have to stay close to home over winter, we may as well make the most of it. Get fit and enjoy it!

Ma`dan People – The Marsh Arabs

By Piotr Wesolowski

The origins of the Marsh Arabs, the swamp dwellers of southern Iraq are rather obscure; their customs are neither Arab nor Muslim, and they speak a dialect that is largely foreign to other Iraqis. The Ma`dan people, it appears, ‘likely maintained a range of pre-Arab, pre-Muslim cultural practices going back to the Sumerians.’ It is believed that sometime in the late eighteenth century, they converted to Shiite Islam which had a tragic effect on their destiny later in history, namely, during reign of Saddam Hussain at the end of the past millennium. The Hussain regime viewed Ma`dan clans with suspicion; allegedly ‘the marshes were used by expatriate Iraqi Shiite guerrilla fighters based in Iran trained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, to infiltrate into Iraq.’ To prevent that, in the aftermath of the Iraq-Iran war of the 1980s, on the orders of Saddam Hussain, the Ma`dan people were relocated to other parts of Iraq and the marshes drained out. What is left of the Ma`dan, the Marsh Arabs, however, is their artistic legacy. The women of these Arab tribes were famous for their most exquisite wedding blankets with abstract, yet symbolic patterns embroidered on plain wool kilims bought on nearby markets from Kurdish weavers. Typically, two naturally brown wool kilims would be sown together (a symbol of unity in marriage) and covered densely with exquisite design in a most unpredictable range of colours. These beautiful object d’art are no longer produced, a result of Hussain’s genocide against the Marsh Arabs, the destruction of their way of life and diaspora.

Quotations from Marsh Arab Rebellion: Grievance, Mafias and Militias in Iraq Juan Cole Fourth Wadie Jwaideh Memorial Lecture, (Bloomington, IN: Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Indiana University, 2008). Pp. 1-31. 26
