“Transitional Centers”: proven to reduce crime in communities

Significantly lower recidivism rate than all other current inmate facilities by Daniel Jackson The state of Georgia currently houses approximately 53,000 inmates in prisons across the state, making it the fourth highest prison population in the country. This is an increase from the January 2020 population of close to 49,000. In September this year, Carroll County Correctional Institute (CI), located off the bypass in Carrollton, housed 246 inmates. Despite being a county agency, the CI houses state inmates, all of whom are already convicted, and none coming from Carroll County. “Recidivism” may not be a term many are

familiar with. Recidivism is the tendency of a criminal to reoffend. The goal to reduce repeat offenders is an ongoing and essential process, with many government funded, local, and nonprofits working towards it. Many prisons and correctional institutes offer programs aimed at reducing recidivism, Carroll County CI offers some programs aimed at this goal, including: - Chapel Services - Family Violence Class - GED - Individual and Group Counseling See TRANSITION CENTERS page 25
