Growling Grass Frog

The Growling Grass Frog (Litoria raniformis) is a large, ground-dwelling tree frog found in Melbourne. It gets its name from the growling sounds it makes when it is calling! Its colour can vary from bright green to shades of dark green and bronze. You can make this one any colour you like!

FUN FACTS The Growling Grass Frog will eat anything it can fit in its mouth, even other frogs! These frogs need large wetlands to breed in, with a thick cover of floating water plants to lay eggs. The floating water plants help to hide the eggs and keep them safe from predators like waterbirds.

You can help support frog populations in your local area by creating a frog friendly habitat – like a frog pond. Download the Melbourne Water Frog Census app to listen to the call of the Growling Grass Frog and find out more on Melbourne’s frogs. You can also use the app to record any frog calls you hear and we will identify the frogs for you!
