Kirin 820 vs Snapdragon 865: CPU & GPU CPU Starting the comparison with the CPU section, here both chipsets have an octa-core CPU based on 64 bit memory architecture. Speaking of the Kirin 820, it devides its cores into three groups – big, middle and little. It has 1 ARM Cortex-A76 Core clocked at up to 2.36GHz, 3 ARM Cortex-A76 Cores clocked at up to 2.22GHz and 4 ARM Cortex-A55 Cores clocked at up to 1.84GHz. While Snapdragon 865 also has three cluster CPU which integrates 1 ARM Cortex-A77 Core operating at up to 3.0GHz, 3 ARM Cortex-A77 Cores clocked at up to 2.5GHz and 4 ARM Cortex-A55 Cores operating at up to 1.8GHz. GPU Coming to the GPU part, for gaming the Kirin 820 integrates an ARM Mali-G57 6-Cores GPU while on the other side, Snapdragon 865 incorporates the Adreno 650 GPU. Here Snapdragon 865 has a better GPU in comparison of the Kirin 820. So here also Snapdragon 865 offers better gaming performance compared to the Kirin 820 SoC.

Manufacturing Process Speaking of the Kirin 820, it is fabricated on the 7nm manifacturing process while Snapdragon 865 is built using the 7nm+ manifacturing process. So here also Snapdragon 865 has better manifacturing process than the Kirin 820, because of which it is more power-efficient chipset than the Kirin 820.

It has Kirin ISP 5.0 which brings support for BM3D SLR image noise reduction, video dual-domain noise reduction, and support for 4K video capture at 60fps. It supports up to 48 + 24MP dual and up to 64MP single camera.

Display In the case of display, Snapdragon 865 has support for up to 4K at 60Hz and QHD+ at 144Hz HDR10+ displays while Kirin 820 supports up to Full HD Plus displays.

AI Capabilities To handling AI tasks, Snapdragon 865 got Qualcomm Hexagon 698 DSP coupled with Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX), Qualcomm Hexagon Tensor Accelerator, Qualcomm Sensing Hub. This DSP offers a decent flagship level AI performance.

On the other hand, the Kirin 820 features an in-house NPU, which improves AI performance by 73% over the Kirin 810. The ISP and NPU are “fully upgraded”, presumably compared to the 810. Here the Snapdragon 865 can’t beat Kirin 820 in terms of AI performance.

Connectivity Features Connectivity-wise both have latest 5G support. The Kirin 820 features the same modem as the Kirin 990, which supports dual-mode SA/NSA 5G. While Snapdragon 865 features Snapdragon X55 Modem-RF System that can capture a maximum downloading speed of up to 7.5Gbps and up to 3Gbps uploading speed.
