LET’S JUMP INTO THIS

Hey!! It’s been awhile!! First off I’d like to thank GOD, the head of my life for making all of this possible. Without him, this dream would only be just that, a dream. Throughout the years, Sudden Utopia has been trying to make a name for itself by creating advertisments, doing photography, and even artist management. Let’s just say we were spread too thin without a more focused mission. With the first issue of SUMAG, we tested the market to see what people responded to. This issue will be dedicated to FASHION, NATURAL HAIR, and CULTURE. I had an opportunity to meet some amazing people this year, one of whom you’ll learn about in this issue, Full Moon Ptah. Hopefully you will all enjoy the new “What Are You Wearing?” Section. This issue is dedicated to the memories of Robert Alexander, Anthony Alls, and Derrick Allen. You will truly be missed. I’ve also been doing more traveling and creating more networks in the tri-state area. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to send a message! Rob Will Publisher, SUMAG

Weightier

Matters Shawn Moore

I

n keeping with a fall theme (in which heavier clothes are obligatory – at least in this part of the country), I have been thinking about a rather heavy matter: Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. I won’t waste time describing the treatise (I would highly recommend you read it at your own leisure), but I will say that it comes in handy when you are evaluating not only society in general but also various aspects of your own personal life. After reading the story, the big questions I have asked myself are these: How genuine is the life I’m living? In a culture that seems determined to make sure I “escape” from reality with its TV, video games and other imitations and simulations of real life, am I actually living in the real world or am I living to support my habit of escaping from life? How lost is the authentic me to the culture of imitation that I currently exist in? Am I allowing myself to become a cheap impersonation of me that is more palatable and acceptable to those around me? I know these questions (and the process of coming up with the answers) may seem a bit too much but think of it as fashion for the soul. What you put on your body matters (more to some than to others). However clothes can and are easily removed, switched around and discarded. If the same can be said of your personality and/or your character, then this article is for you. This is not a question of trying to be like someone else. The word “like” in this instance means that you are taking what you consider the most laudable accomplishments of an individual and trying to follow in their footsteps. Notice that “following in their footsteps” does not mean you stop being you and become them. It means you aspire to do something that they did in your own way. The question is then are you trying to be someone else instead of like someone else? Before I offer any advice, let me start by saying I am not a yogi, an ordained minister, a psychologist or any other kind of expert. I’m just a person trying to keep my sanity in this insane world just like the next person. What I have come up with in my own contemplations I hope can help someone

else. I have come to realize that my uniqueness is a gift. There is no one like me in the world and there never will be again. My fingerprints and ear lobes (among other body parts) attest to this fact. What I have to contribute to the world is important, and no one else can do it like I can because there is no one else like me. Therefore the most important first step I can take in making an authentic positive impact on my friends, my family, my co-workers and others in my sphere of influence and beyond is to be the most authentic me that I can be. The word “like” in this instance means that you are taking what you consider the most laudable accomplishments of an individual and trying to follow in their footsteps. Why would I waste time trying to be someone else? First of all I would fail because it is an impossible feat. Because of the gift of uniqueness, we all make poor imitations of someone else no matter how hard we try. Second, it’s hard enough to hang on to our real selves in the midst of resisting the enormous pressure of our culture which wants to place us in certain roles and certain bodies (among other “boxes”). Trying to take on the “look” and/ or the “feel” of the you more acceptable to those around you is still faking it. It is the worst kind of deception because you are becoming a willing participant in lying to yourself. Stop trying to be someone else, stop trying to be a more “acceptable” you. Be your authentic self, warts and all. Everyone has warts to work on but don’t lose yourself in the process of trying to become a better you. That is called throwing out the baby with the bath water. None of these things can really be accomplished by constantly escaping from the world. Start by fasting for a day from TV, video games and other distractions. Maybe you need to start more slowly. How about starting with an hour a week gadget-free? Maybe take a long walk or find a quiet spot

where you can just sit. Take that time to really think about your personal affairs. Where are you spiritually, emotionally, psychologically? What can you do to improve yourself? I’m willing to bet it does not involve watching more TV, etc. Journaling has been an enormous help to me so I recommend it to others. No matter what way your body comes packaged, you should still remain true to yourself. This is always a gift to those around you. The most important part of any gift is what’s inside no matter how pretty or sophisticated or ornate the packaging. Very weighty matters yes. But required….just like heavier clothing with the changing seasons.

How to

Grow

Black Hair: African American Hair Care Tips

by: Geraldine Prickett

What Causes Hair Loss?

This article is a must read if you want to grow longer hair, or even stop hair loss. No matter how many products or treatments you have tried, hair growth can be achieved despite years of stunted hair growth, shedding, and hair trauma. Trust me, I am speaking from personal experience. About three years ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Unfortunately, one of the side effects of my medications and chemotherapy was hair loss and balding. Devastated by having patches of hair on my head, during recovery, I did what most people do---I bought wigs. At first, the wigs seemed like a perfect solution. But, they were really a cover up. Moreover, my niece would scream when she saw me because she couldn’t recognize me with my “new wig.” So, I begin using hair loss products in hopes to regrow my hair. Unfortunately, this was another unsuccessful venture. Rogaine. DHT Blockers. Minoxidil. All of these products failed to perform what they promised. Further, I spend hundreds of dollars on Minoxidil every month, only to have no hair growth and a sore scalp. Frustrated, I decided that there had to be a method or some natural product available that would grow my hair, stop my shedding, and stop my balding. Believe it or not, I found one. However, there are some things you need to know about hair loss before I tell you what worked for me.

Hair loss, shedding, and balding occurs for several reasons. They may occur because of heredity, diet, lifestyle choices, or prescribed medications. Even your hair care products and styling techniques may be facilitating your hair loss or stunting your hair growth. If you are like me, a combination of these factors may be retarding your hair growth. If your diet is laden with fats, alcohol, sugars, and junk foods, you are actually inhibiting your hair’s ability to grow. If you buy most, if not all, of your hair care products from traditional stores, you are most likely buying a hair-damaging useless product. Most hair care products, including most of those that claim to be “all-natural,” contain synthetic emulsifiers and harsh detergents, such as Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Phosphates, and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. Unfortunately, these products are loaded with toxins and chemicals that actually dry and strip your hair of vital nutrients it needs to grow. How do you Grow Your Hair, Stop Balding, and Stop Hair Loss? You have to attack hair loss on the inside and the outside. A great hair growth regimen has three necessary components: a healthy eating plan, substantial water intake, and a high quality hair growth and hair care product. Step One: A Healthy Hair Eating Plan Your hair is all protein. Thus, you need a protein rich diet, chocked fill of B Vitamins and other hair-strengthening nutrients. Increase your intake of fish. It is full of healthy proteins and essential fatty acids and natural oils your hair needs. In addition, drink a protein supplement or shake everyday. If you follow this plan, not only will your hair grow, but you will also lose weight. That is, of course, if you lay

off the junk food. Remember, I warned you too much junk worth every penny you pay. You can find it easily at www. discoverb4a.com. Also, check for it on Ebay. You may actufood above. ally find a deal. Step Two: Drink Water Eight to ten glasses of water is an absolute requirement. Drinking water flushes your body of toxins, chemicals, and impurities that stifle your hair growth and disrupt your hormone and enzyme imbalances. Water also transports the important nutrients your body needs throughout your body. Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/advice-artiHate drinking water? Add lemon and Splenda to have a cles/how-to-grow-black-hair-african-american-hair-caretips-133256.html healthy, tasty alternative. Step Three: Buy a High Quality Hair Growth Product I suggest you go all-natural. Unnatural hair care products are a no-no for someone who wants long-lasting, healthy hair growth. Find a hair growth product that contains powerful essential oils, natural herbs, and vitamin rich nutrients your hair needs to survive. Look for products with ingredients such as: Aloe Vera, Citrus Fruits, Jojoba, Rosemary, and Sage. Make sure you stray away from all natural products that use natural extracts. Extracts are not as powerful as essentials oils. They are a cheap substitute for the real thing. Although there are several natural hair care products on the market, not all hair growth products are created equal. Make sure you read the fine print. Most “natural” products still contain phosphates, sodium lauryl sulfate, petroleum, mineral oil, and other lab created humectants that ultimately damage your hair. My advice---if you can’t read the ingredients, don’t buy the product. When I was searching for a natural hair growth product, I found one really great buy, Beauty 4 Ashes Super Hair Growth System. Finding this company took me awhile; but Beauty 4 Ashes pretty much gives you everything you need to make your hair grow. Foremost, I checked the ingredient listings and the products contained no artificial ingredients. The system also included hair growth vitamins, a great hair healthy eating plan, and even scalp stimulating hair growth exercise routine. At first, the system may seem a bit pricey, but, boy was I impressed with the results. In 9 months, I went from patches of hair to hair just above my shoulders. Now, I am no product junkie; but I have to tell you that this product is worth the money. It does not cost an arm and leg and it is

SUMAG Model of the Month

Sierra Miles Sierra Miles- Born in November 1986, Sierra has taken up her college education at Wayne State University, pursuing Journalism and PR. She plans on taking her journey to Colorodo, Chicago, Boston or maybe international to the United Kingdom to enjoy the fashion world. Fashion has always inspired me since i was in in middle school, when I was little my mom would always give me something to draw and color she knew i was artsy when i came home to ask her for a art easel and C.A.D drafting tools. I was pretty much all over the place, from drawing houses to fashion dresses, to mechanical C.A.D drafting. I then pursued my art by joining theatrical plays from the 17th and 18th century. While growing up in a meaningful high school relationship that lasted 81/2 years i began to express my art through love and poetry, this is when i knew that i wanted to become a writer to express how i felt seeming as how that was my only way of escape for many years. So now that is my goal, my journey in life is to share with the world how i feel about love, fashion, photography and art.

Singer, Songwriter, Producer Aaron LaMont feels it’s time to let everyone see what he has to offer to R&B. Hailing from Detroit, Mi... Music has been a part of his life since a child. From Glee club in School to Choir in Church, R&B Group (Noir Soul), and now a Solo Artist signed to 1Soul1 Records. He seemed to always stand out as the Lead Singer in whatever he was part of. Later, while in Pershing Marching Band he would watch his band mates play Piano and decided to teach himself. This lead to Aaron producing his own songs which later lead to him learning how to use Fruity Loops Music Program. Though he knew he was good at what he did... he was afraid for others to hear his Music. That’s when his friend Terrance introduced him to Lawrence Tubbs of Tubby Entertainment “TE Lab”, and joined an R&B Group in 04-05 After years of being in a R&B Group of 5 that ended up being only 3 members, he finally felt it was time to step out on his own. Late 2010 he decided to sign with 1Soul1 Records and things have took off since then for him. He’s also a singer in Karanji’s SoulWater Band (Soulful Hip Hop). Now, he’s focused on shooting video to his first single to his “Untitled” Album in early 2012 while also Producing/Writing for various Local Artists. People are soon to see a lot of Aaron LaMont this coming year. Follow on Twitter: @IamAaronLaMont Youtube: youtube.com/AaronLaMontMusic Soundcloud: SoundCloud.com/AaronLaMontMusic
