A LANDMARK COMPETITION Chairman of the judges Tim Atkin MW talks us through the quality and value on offer in this year’s Top 100
T
he Top 100 Awards highlight the best wines from the south of France and what to look for, for both the trade and consumers. Tim Atkin MW, chairman of the judges, rounds up why the annual competition continues to be an exciting landmark in the year of wine competitions. Why is Occitanie now such a successful wine region and so popular to visit? Anyone who has ever been there will know that it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world. There are a number of large towns and cities in the region, but it’s the countryside that is truly breathtaking: wild, rugged and dramatic, often with those classic wild herb (“garrigue”) notes that turn up in the wines. The success of the region is down to two things: the amazing array of wine styles that it produces and the shift in quality that has occurred over the last 20 years. It’s really coming to fruition now. Where does one start when it comes to appreciating the wines of LanguedocRoussillon and Sud-Ouest? In two places: the appellations and the varieties, which are sometimes blended, but also sold (and labelled) with grape names, particularly for IGP wines. Get to know the region by breaking it down into its constituent parts.
In the general context of French wines, what is noteworthy about the region’s winemaking and developments? There’s a freedom and an absence of paying homage to tradition that I really like. That doesn’t mean there’s not history here – Crémant de Limoux and Cahors, for example, are very old wine styles – but I love the energy of the Sud de France. What were you as judges looking for when selecting this year’s line-up of Top 100 wines? We just want to select the best wines. We don’t have any set quotas for certain wine styles. But we always seem to select an appealingly and appropriately diverse line-up. How does the Top 100 benefit the UK wine trade? It gives it a shortcut to some of the most exciting French wines. The judges do the hard work, although it’s a pleasure to taste these wines. What about consumers? What does the Top 100 mean and how can they get to enjoy some of the wines? The same thing is true. We’re telling the people about the wines we like most. Many of the judges know the region very well, so we’re happy to highlight what we regard as the best wines. The competition has built a good reputation after all these years and many of the wines are stocked in the UK. So look out for the Top 100 stickers!

It’s always a pleasure to judge a set of wines from such a diverse region. Occitanie makes as many different styles as some entire countries. I was particularly impressed by the red blends this year, but Syrah and Chardonnay also stood out for me. And, as ever, I was impressed by the value for money on offer. Harpers joined the judging teams at the Languedoc-Roussillon/Sud-Ouest Sud de France Top 100 to discover first hand what the competition is all about
T
he annual Languedoc-Roussillon/ Sud-Ouest Sud de France Top 100 tasting, chaired by Master of Wine Tim Atkin, is popular with tasters precisely because of the exciting array of wine styles being shown from across this broad and very geographically diverse region. Taking place in the sun-slaked studios of The Worx in south west London, the day began with an expectant hush as the judges gathered and were assigned to a table and tasting team. Tasting sheets at the ready, pens poised, palates primed, the flights of wines then began to emerge, placed in neat rows on the tables, with no more information offered than the broader region of origin of the wines. It’s here that the years of experience and knowledge, the expertise and analytical skills of the best tasters kicks in. As with past events, some of the best in the business were on hand to judge this year’s Top 100. They included consultant Peter McCombie MW, wine writer and southern French expert Rosemary George MW, specialist importer Nik Darlington of Red Squirrel Wine, critic Anthony Rose, blogger Jamie Goode, Fuller’s wine buyer Neil Bruce, Bibendum buying director Andrew Shaw and Waitrose buyer Daphne Teremetz, along with several other trade luminaries and communicators.
First up was a crisp, palate-freshening line-up of fashionable Picpoul – a good start to the day. The pace then picked up, with IGP Chardonnay, other IGP whites, IGP Grenache-based rosé, IGP reds, AOC white Languedoc, AOC red Rhône, AOC red Pic Saint Loup, AOC red Minervois and AOC red Saint-Chinian all in a morning’s work. What also makes this an enjoyable challenge is that some two-thirds of the wines don’t currently have a UK importer. The Top 100 is designed to shine a light on what the region has to offer and it certainly achieves this aim. Thus, for both buyers and journalists in the room, there was a real sense of discovery – which added an element of intrigue to proceedings when a real gem was unearthed but tasters had to wait until the end of the day to find out what it was that had knocked them out (in a good way). There was also no conferring among the judges, until the end of a flight, when scores and notes were already written, unless a bottle was deemed faulty and a second sample was called into play. However, as the Top 100 competition works by elevating the very best from several hundred wines entered, the judges did then get busy comparing scores and discussing – if there are any wines hanging in the balance – which samples should be put forward as being worthy of making the final cut. My team was led by the highly experienced taster and judge Charles Metcalfe, who gave equal

“As always, the diversity from this region is dazzling, but the consistently good quality across the board was impressive. There were very few bad wines. SaintChinian impressed me particularly, as did the southern grape variety white blends. Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne seem to be the ingredients for particularly exciting wines. With the reds, our panel found that when it comes to oak, less is more. The fruit and structure from this part of France is so good that, on the whole, oak is more of a dead weight than quality enhancement.” Tamlyn Currin, wine writer, JancisRobinson.com
■ The wines are put in three categories – “yes”, “no” or “maybe” ■ “Yes” wines are tasted again in the afternoon, by a different panel ■ “No” wines are rejected ■ “Maybe” wines are tasted again by Tim Atkin MW who has the final call ■ Each judge is asked to assign their favourite wine as Coup de Cœur ■ A trophy is given for the Best White, Best Red and Best Rosé weighting to all comments and arguments as to whether a wine was worthy or not and should go through. If we couldn’t agree, or a wine was just teetering on the edge of “in” or “out”, then that sample ended up on the chairman’s table with any other similar styles from other tables’ flights, to be reassessed against the quality of those that had definitely made the grade. As said, it was hard if enjoyable work, so a welcome bite of lunch and a chance to catch up on trade gossip allowed the palate to recover from the onslaught of the morning. Chips were all too tempting after tasting through so many wines, soothing the tastebuds with addictive ease. Then it’s back to work again, with another 10 flights, covering various Languedoc and other
southern French styles, and well-known AOCs including Corbières, Faugères and the very good whites from Limoux, plus another fresh flight of rosés. The overall quality, as the judges agreed, was high, with the tasting also re-impressing on all the incredible diversity available from the Mediterranean-influenced southern regions under scrutiny. Our Top 100 appear on the following pages and – we hope you’ll agree if you know or taste any of these wines – it’s a cracking selection, covering pretty much all bases, from enjoyable, easy-drinking whites, reds and rosés, to complex and quite sublime food-friendly styles that can sit with the best in the world.

There is always a lot to discover when judging the Top 100. I like the generosity of Roussillon reds and the freshness of the south west, both in reds and whites and I love the diversity of the Languedoc. While varietal labelled IGP wines are an easy way to start, there is so much more to discover in the appellationlabelled wines, which are usually blends. I love the Rhônestyled whites, which can be fragrant and richly textured, and the characterful red wines with spice and personality. Best advice? La Clape is situated near Narbonne and is a breathtaking spot windswept and covered with pine groves and vineyards. This “boutique” AOC with only 25 growers and three co-operatives produces both red and white wine. However it is well known for its white wines thanks to the grape Bourboulenc that gives wines great character and personality. The reds are dominated by Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.

You name it, they make it The most common red grapes are Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre; in white expect Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, Piquepoul, Viognier and Chardonnay, among many others. The abundant southern sunshine and warmth make for flavoursome wines, but not at the expense of balance and finesse. From red to white, dry to sweet, still to sparkling – you name it, they make it. Food and wine matching The extraordinary diversity of wine offers plenty of room to experiment with food and wine matching, from classic pairings such as Minervois with roast lamb, to the more experimental – try a dry Muscat with fresh asparagus.

This little gem of a wine region lies in the foothills of the Cévennes mountain, north west of Béziers on schist and clay/ limestone soils. It produces red, rosé and white wines. The reds and rosés are made from a blend of Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault and offer generous, dark fruits, spices and garrigue scent underpinned by a refreshing mineral edge. The whites use a unique blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Vermentino that make them so distinctive and fragrant.

The cru appellation Minervois la Livinière is a small pocket of land producing only red wine in the heart of the Languedoc, with vineyards jostling for space amongst the craggy limestone and the sun-baked scents of the garrigue. Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre are the main ingredients in the blend while Carignan, Cinsault among others play supporting roles. The wines here are elegantly fragrant, but also ample and weighty.

AOC Fitou Fitou, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, is the oldest appellation in the Languedoc and has two distinct terroirs: one by the coast, the other in the hilly hinterland around Tuchan. Wines are made with Syrah and Grenache with a good slug of Carignan, which lends the wine a degree of earthiness and also adds to its individuality; many producers are also increasingly using Mourvèdre these days, which gives their Fitou a pleasing exotic edge.
