Solons’ mixed reactions
Lawmakers at the House of Representatives weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday allowing former President Ferdinand Marcos to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Voting 9-5, the Supreme Court dismissed all seven cases opposing the burial of the former strongman at the LNMB. House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez welcomed the decision, saying that the rule of law prevailed over partisan emotions. Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza, Navotas City Rep. Toby Tiangco also lauded the high court’s ruling in favor of the Marcoses. “It’s about time that we allow the burial of former President Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Let us bury emotions once and for all,” said Suarez, noting that the issue has divided the nation. Atienza said, “It’s about time we bury Marcos wherever the family wants him to be buried. Now that the SC has spoken, we hope everyone respects the decision.” Tiangco said the

‘Horrible day for democracy’ Hontiveros: Supreme Court has failed the test of history
“THIS is a horrible day for democracy,” said Senator Francis Pangilinan apparently referring to the decision of the Supreme Court (SC) Tuesday that allowed the burial of former strongman President Ferdinand E. Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) in Taguig City. “Thanks to the Supreme Court the Philippines will be a laughing stock of the world. We kicked out a reviled dictator and now we are honoring him by burying him in our national heroes cemetery. No less than our Supreme Court wants our citizens, our children to honor a plunderer and tyrant. This is shameful and deplorable,” said Pangilinan in a statement. He said: “Now the Supreme Court wants

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Members of the Higaonon tribe in Misamis Oriental marched toward the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 10 (DENR-10) to ask for help over the lands which they claimed were taken away from them. The Higaonon peasants from Lugait, Claveria, Kinoguitan and Gingoog demanded that DENR-10 address their plight so they could go back to tilling the land which they said they have been occupying since time immemorial. In Barangay Plaridel, Claveria, for instance, dozens of families were driven out of their dwellings and properties when a corporation secured a writ of demolition last July. Datu Aveto Ecaranum, president of New Indigenous Barangay Plaridel Farmers Association (NIBPFA), a member-organization of MOFA, said police officers and private security teams tore down their houses and ordered them to leave their land. Ecaranum said NIBPFA members had no choice but to live in makeshift dwellings in a nearby lot since they could not go back to their land for fear of being shot at by armed men guarding the property. He said it was not enough they were driven out of their land by threatening them with armed security guards, their coconut and banana plants were cut down See LUMADS, page A7
Guv files motion to reconsider suspension of prov’l treasurer By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor
MISAMIS Oriental--The provincial government of Misamis Oriental has filed a motion to reconsider the
Ombudsman suspension order of the former provincial treasurer who was “simply doing her job.” The Ombudsman meted Marilou Rivera, then provincial treasury operations
officer, a one year suspension after the anti-graft court found her guilty of “Oppression and Neglect of Duty” in connection with the issuance of warrants of garnishment against a
private firm in 2014. Provincial Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano said Wednesday that the provincial government received the order Monday, which was released by the
Ombudsman Thursday last week. He said that the case stemmed from the provincial government’s issuance of an assessment against Pilipinas Kao Inc. (PKI)
of its unpaid real property taxes for the years 2002 to 2013 in the amount of PHP 631.5 million. Emano said that the PKI, a Japanese firm, which See treasurer, page A7
