Green groups lead dialogue against coal-fired power plants By GERRY LEE GORIT Correspondent

Sulog, an umbrella organization of environmental groups in Cagayan de Oro City, spearheaded on Friday a multisectoral dialogue on the impact of an additional coal-fired power plant in Misamis Oriental.

The dialogue sought to thresh out issues of global warming in general and the environment in the province which would be hosting three coal-fired power plants. These plants are the existing Steag State Power at Phividec, the Filinvest plant that broke ground on Wednesday also at Phividec and the Minergy plant in Balingasag. “Steag is enough,” said Nixon Baban, convenor of Bangon Cagayan, one of the green groups who participated in the dialogue along with representatives from the academe and religious sector. There were also delegates from Iligan City who brought their concern of another coal-fired power plant planned for nearby Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. Baban stressed the need See dialogue, page 7

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The City Councilors here, during a committee hearing last Wednesday, took turns in intensely questioning the basis of the projected revenues that would qualify a P 2.6 billion budget in 2014. City Councilor Candy Darimbang questioned the finance committee created by Mayor Oscar Moreno on how it comes up with a P 2.6 billion proposed budget with an actual revenue collection that collected only a little over 10 percent of its projection. Darimbang was referring to the miscellaneous income presented by the city treasurer Glenn Banez in the amount of P 42 million for 2014. Banez presented an estimated amount of P 33 million for the second semester of 2013 and a total amount of P 35 million until the end of 2013. Vice Governor Pelaez appoints new provincial board secretary

M I S A M I S OR I E N TA L – Vice Governor Joey G. Pelaez recently appointed the new Provincial Board Secretary in the person of ATTY. ERNESTO R. SOTTO, JR. He assumed office last November 15, 2013.
