On June 10, Friday, student activists led by the Kabataan Partylist, Anakbayan and League of Filipino Students (LFS) and College Editors Guild of the Philippines stormed the main office of the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) to protest the approval of tuition and other fees hike in 304 private universities, as well as the approval of tuition hikes in over 1,200 basic education institutions. The protesters pelted Ched’s gates with red paint as a sign of indignation, saying that the agency once again proved to be a “mere stamp pad” of education companies. “It seems that the Aquino administration is not yet done with inflicting harm to the people, with his administration’s recent approval of tuition and other fee increases in both basic and higher education institutions,” Anakbayan secretary general Einstein Recedes said. Pinoy Aquaman’ swims from Bohol to Cebu SURIGAO City––Endurance swimmer and triathlete Ingemar “Pinoy Aquaman” Macarine did another first in the open water on Sunday by swimming a 16-83-kilometer stretch from Bohol to Cebu. Macarine, a lawyer who hails from Placer, Surigao del Norte swam solo from the light house in Barangay Babacungan, Cabilao Island in Loon, Bohol to Barangay Bulasa in Argao, Cebu. He crossed Cebu Strait in five hours and 49 minutes, defying rough waters and hundreds of jellyfish. See SWIMS, page A7

‘Epira’ fortifies private power monopolies: IBON THE Research group IBON said that fifteen years of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) has only strengthened corporations’ monopoly of the Philippine power industry, and burdened consumers with high power rates. The
group, a member of the POWER alliance, said that EPIRA must be repealed. EPIRA or Republic Act (RA) 9136 was enacted in 2001, leading to the massive privatization and deregulation of the country’s power sector.
Despite government touting EPIRA as the answer to the country’s power and financial troubles, residential power rates have escalated by 99% from P4.87/ kwh in 2000 to P9.68/kwh in 2015. According to reports, Philippine power rates are
