Wao killings spark evacuation By WALTER I. BALANE of MindaNews

MALAYBALAY City--Over a thousand residents fled Barangay Park Area in Wao, Lanao del Sur following the massacre of six people, not seven as earlier reported, prompting investigations by the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and a factfinding body created by the local government, officials said on Wednesday. Nine people were also hurt in the incident, reports said. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) said a total of 1,115 barangay residents sought refuge at BLISS-Western in the town proper. Lominog Poloyagan,

Wao’s population is 83-percent settlers and 17-percent Moro. The town used to be a predominantly Maranao community until settlers came in. Mild quakes jolt 2 M’nao provinces AT least two mild earthquakes shook the provinces of Davao Occidental and Surigao del Norte on Friday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the first quake with a magnitude of 3.5 occurred at 12:49 a.m. with its epicenter traced 90 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental. The quake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 115 kilometers. The second quake with a magnitude 3.3 occurred around 1:15 a.m. with epicenter traced some 12 kilometers northeast of Socorro in Surigao del Norte, which also felt Intensity 1. CAGAYAN de Oro City-Six schools have signified its intention to increase its tuition and other school fees next school, according to the report of the Power, a daily newsletter of the City Council. In a report, the Power said The Southern de Oro Philippines College (SPC) applied for a 15 percent increase in tuitione, including fees for its miscellaneous, with the Commission on Higher Education (ChEd). Aside from SPC, Xavier University is also increasing its tuition by six percent, Capitol University and Liceo de Cagayan University five percent increase for

both tuition and miscellaneous. Cagayan de Oro College (COC) has also applied for a four percent tuition hike while Lourdes College applied for a three percent increase on its tuition for the next school year. The City Council committee on education chaired by Councilor Adrian Barba will soon deliberate on the letter from the ChEd. In a letter, the ChEd told the City Council that six out of 20 or 30% of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the city have applied for an increase in their tuition and other school fees for SY 2015-2016.
